  • Obsidian Ebony is thermally modified maple. It looks like ebony. I was sent a fingerboard free of charge to try out.

‪@twoodfrd‬ made a video as well, which I found out about a couple of weeks after making this video. His video is excellent and he does much better tests than I do! This guy is the real deal when it comes to lutherie, so definitely watch his video. Link:

    Thermalwood Canada info and website:
ThermalWood Canada is able to thermally modify wood products using their specially designed kiln. The kiln operates at controlled temperatures that ‘cook’ the wood to bring out specific characteristics.
    Their website: thermalwoodcanada.com/
I don't see an online store anywhere for their products, so at this point I'm not sure how to purchase from them other than maybe calling them or visiting their location in Bathurst, New Brunswick.

I mentioned in the video that I had never worked with maple before except for the bridge patch of my 2nd guitar. Well, I completely forgot about the flame maple binding of my first guitar and the flame maple sides of my carved mandolin build! So, I can say that I absolutely did not notice any medicinal scent working with those, so the smell must be from some part of the process they used to thermally modify the wood. Just wanted to clear that up.

Very cool Chris. Good that there are alternates still from real wood becoming available.

Very cool Chris, I had just ordered 2 of those before seeing your vid. On your Bubinga build You are going to be Amazed at the tone of that wood, I had some bubinga in my shop from at least 20yrs ago when I was building custom furniture. I used the bubinga for the 2 parlor guitars I built for my Sons, Its an Amazing tonewood but it does have alot of natural resins so I would highly recommend wiping down with mineral spirits wherever you are gluing something too it. Thanks Brother & Happy building

@CMRWoodworks Hey Chris, No I meant to say Iam going to order some of the baked maple from Canada, I have only used the royal blackwood so far. Let me know if I should mention you when I place an order, Im glad to help if they give you something for promoting this. Scott

Got it. They only sent me the fingerboard and that‘s it. So I‘m not partnered or in a deal with them or anything. But, please mention me anyway! Couldn‘t hurt for them to see traffic coming from me or whoever else they sent one too (if they even did, I don‘t know, other than probably Robbie O‘Brien).

I do have a question about the royal blackwood. Does it smell like wood when you cut it?

@@CMRWoodworks Hey Chris sorry I didn’t see your question. No the royal blackwood has no smell (at least to me). That is kinda weird that composite wood has a medicinal smell ? I have never heard of anything like that in my 40+yrs of woodworking.

Hi! Thanks for snother nice video. A spmehow tangential comment: I know some people like ebony for the color and such, but i have found that one can make pretty nice sounding bridges with pau ferru at a fraction of the cost.

I‘ve heard of it, but not tried it. I‘m sure I‘ll give a go at some point. Thanks for the info!

Thanks so much for the video, I might try it. Is it easy to get, how much are the blanks?

I’m not sure of the price as they sent this one to me free of charge to try out. I think they have to be contacted through their website for purchase. I think they are working on a way to make online ordering an option, but I haven’t seen that yet. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help regarding this!

How does it compare cost wise to ebony?

I‘m not sure. They may not be selling online yet. I just got it in the mail today and I am still trying to find out more info about it, too!
