- Diospyros celebica is a beautifully striking wood, much prized by furniture makers for high end, art deco inspired cabinetry. As you'll hear in this video it is RESONANT!
It's a wood I've rediscovered a passion for. I'm using it for fingerboards, bridges and bindings, just gorgeous!

I have a custom made guitar with Macassar Ebony B/S. In generally, this tonewood gives you a delicate high, compressed mid, deep and lovely bass without overpowering. It provides a lot of clarity, separation of note, loud and sustain, very 'precision' in every single note you play. Paired with European spruce, it becomes a balanced guitar.
Since few weeks I own a Dowina Exotic Ebony X s, a handmade in Slovakia grand auditorium guitar, using Macassar ebony for back and sides and, what can I say, it sounds amazing!
I have chosen it by your introduction of this tonewood in this video and I am not disappointed in any case, but more than impressed. Thank you for your videos, Tom! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I love the FEEL of good ebony under my fingers on a fretboard. Easily a favorite fretboard wood, just for it's feel.
Wow, that tap tone is so good ❤️
I live in Makassar city
Makassar Ebony Wood that ia highly protected...
Im so happy that you like it....
❤❤
I just got a PRS Private Stock electric with a 2-piece Macassar and OMG... it's beyond amazing to look at.... and 2 piece is apparently a big deal since they usually do 3-4 piece.
Sweeeet!
been loving the series ,i'm lucky enough to know of local supplier with a huge amount of macassar ebony definitely need to add more to my collection .they had some lumber last time i was there big enough that you'd be able to get two piece backs from them be hugely expensive though.
Hi Luke... what sort of cost are you talking about and can you source this at your supplier - - 2 piece for with sides?
@@kevingreene6893 been a few years since i last been there but was one particalar beam of it remember clearly must been about 400mm wide 2250 thick 2000mm long .these guys only tend to deal in raw lumber and have hell a lot of it you have to go digging thru the stacks to find what your looking for .
Interesting stuff Luke, keep me posted... cheers.K.
Thanks for the great videos, I build pool cues and use pretty much the same woods, but I've learned a lot from your videos.
The tap tone and the looks I'm sold.
It’s the good stuff Jim!
Nice... Im living in est borneo. Many of times visiting sulawesi Island. The wood in your Hand is come from southest sulawesi. Ebony also growing in borneo. Macassar ebony now in red list. Will not passed from sulawesi Island except by wood work final.
Good to know!
I have some set of ebony. If you interesting I can send to you.
On my LTD Eclipse Black Metal it plays smooth and sounds tight
Hard to understand the multi-piece back haters they don't bat an eyelid if it's a 4 piece back with the name Torres but get all snooty when it's everyone else building:-') and yes I think you have raised my interest in Macassar Ebony
My current guitar is a european spruce/macassar ebony. Love it! ❤
This and ziricote are my two favorite looking woods for a guitar.
Such beautiful timbers!
It adds sustain
Compared to what
Unreal looking wood. Rosewood WC nice!
I bought a set that had a 2 piece back from the great classical guitar maker Paul Fischer. Paul thought it offered as much in a guitar as a Rio Rosewood back and sides. 4 piece is no problem whatsover and gives the musician everything a 2 piece back does..
So beautiful!
🔵 thanks güdd info❕ Macassar Ebony is one of my top favorite tone woods , after Honduran mahogany and Hawaiian Koa ❕🐸
And I thought it was a cheap junker wood, thank you! I'll buy that 2006 D-28 now.
Another Great tone woods video! Please do one on Padauk - I’m very curious about your opinion and reaction - thanks!
isso já é provocação kkkkkk linda madeira!
Going to be a Killer Macassar Ebony Guitar what a sound Tommy :)
I hope you do tasmanian blackheart sassafras I would love your thoughts on that Cheers
Hi Tom, what do you think of Taylor's urban ash initiative? Any chance you can tap some samples? I recently bought a Taylor GT urban ash (without pickup) and like it. Just wondering what you thought.
Stunning tap-tone on that ME... sustain to match the very best - if not - surpass therm all? Looks beautiful. It’s the full package. Pity its so hard to come by! So what tonewood top would be best with this one Tom? Sorry Tom... did a quick edit here but wanted to ask - how do you think this would compare to the ancient bog oak... there’s similarities there too... don’t you think?
I think it can be done as 2 pieces back set, but it would be so expensive, it can be done by just cutting out central peace of log 1.5cm thick, so geains are paralel to each other and book match it, but i think by doing that a lot of wood would be wasted
Please review "gaharu crocodile" Its from indonesia, indonesia luthier say its subtitute Ziricote
Try kamagong or Philippine Macassar ebony
they are actually big tree but they takes decades to grow
Thank you
I have an ebony tree in my garden 🖤🖤
Where’s your garden? That’s so cool, do you know what species?
@@TomSandsGuitars i m from sri lanka. I think the specie is diospyros ebenum ( ceylon ebony) 😌
Tommy’s tapes S1 E1.
Tolles Holz
Lovely stuff
Hello Tom, what you feel, you smell while you process it to be guitar? do you feel like chili (hot) on your hand? what kind of smell you feel or inhale?
I try to avoid breathing in too much wood dust!
@@TomSandsGuitars Did you wearmasker while that condition?
just make a classical guitar out of it! just kidding, but yeah, it would be nice to be a classical guitar
LMAO. 24dec, to hot. Thats our average temp in winter in central Queensland
Haha! I knew that would tickle some of my friends from places that are actually hot 🤣
Hi , I bought some "macassar mahogany" for my 2nd build . The thing is , it doesn't exist . What is this stuff ? It does resemble mahogany though . Sapele ? I've done a ton of searching and all I get is macassar ebony . Very annoying . Seller needs to come clean .
Where did you get it from?
@@TomSandsGuitars From eBay, the seller is in Melbourne Victoria Australia .
@@TomSandsGuitars He still has sets for sale . I don't want to name him but his store is predominantly rosewood stuff . Hence the name .
@@TomSandsGuitars One more thing , I'm not complaining , the set is very nice and looks a lot like mahogany to me . I don't know enough to identify by end grain . Ok , I'll stop now . Peace ✌
@@davidharris7431 would love to see it, perhaps I can help identify, email me at info@tomsandsguitars.com 🙏
anyone have any experience with bass guitar fretboards? what sound?
Wood has little to no effect on electric instruments 🙏
