I’ve worked in higher ed for 20 years and climbed the ladder all the way to the VP level. I am educated and a hard worker. I’ve worked at Harvard, Hopkins, GW and AU my Alma Mater. I was in some way discriminated against, bullied or abused at every institution. I learned that higher ed is the only place abuse can not just hide but thrive behind titles and a willing BOT. I decided in 2024 to put an end to the suffering by trusting God and retiring at the young age of 44. I am happier now than I have ever been and starting over as a premed student. There are times in life when you can’t wait for someone to see and do something …. Sometimes you just have to walk away and trust God for a new path. BTW this decision was made with my therapist… please dont neglect your mental health.
It is great that you start a next grueling career after academia with premed at 44. This is truly inspiring. 😊

@Godsgr8joy You are correct. Abuse thrives at universities. You think they are professional environments, but are completely the opposite. I was only a student and student worker and I dealt with sexual harassment and assault by staff, wage theft, exploitation, dishonesty, retaliation, bullying etc. On top of that all of my concerns and complaints were swept under the rug. My mental health declined and I ended up walking away with no degree. Trying to attend college and be a part of the university community was one of the worst. I'm just now trying to start over and revisit accomplishing what I started. I will be going to a new university, but will NOT be participating in any university activities. Sometimes people have to start over and it seems inconvenient, but it's necessary to get what you deserve. It's unfortunate abuse is so prevalent and covered up at institutions. So many people are impacted and have no voice. It's hurts the university and the students at the end of the day when there is a toxic work environment.
Why is there a white man over an HBCU?! Why!?

As a black woman working in Corporate America at the management level for over 25yrs, I CONCUR with all of the points made in this report. It is exhausting and a few years ago, I decided it is simply not worth it to move up the ladder. My ladder is permanently closed. I do my job (no longer going over and beyond) and sign out at the end of the day. My mental health takes precedent over the biases and racial struggles in the workplace.

Not unusual in academia
She was in an administrative role, not a tenure eligible faculty role. Only full time teaching faculty who are on a tenure track are eligible for tenure. Administrators, even top administrators at the VP level, are considered staff employees...no tenure eligibility. Thus, the higher up you get in administrative roles, the more vulnerable one becomes. It's a serious political game and the only way to get through it is to know what and who you're dealing with at ALL times. Higher education is a very toxic environment that's driven by fear of everything from enrollment issues, budget cuts, administration changes, gossip, undermining, competition, etc... At no point is anyone "safe" per se and, unfortunately, most higher education faculty and administrators themselves didn't have a well rounded DEI experience. Thus, they protect themselves from being cancelled by being faux relationship driven, cherry picking user friendly Blacks and pitting them against noisier Blacks, and playing power games. The best thing for administrators to do is do your job well, be on time, and never ever give them insight into your personal life or struggles. ALWAYS seek outside support discretely. NEVER take your family or personal business to work. As soon as we do that, we are considered incompetent and begin to be treated as such. It is a critical mistake to go to a white supervisor or any supervisor for that matter and ask for help. In this regard, you have to manage your work and life separately. For us, work is a green thing, period. It's never a safe and supportive environment to do anything except make your money and keep moving along until you're ready to go.
Do NOT expect them to change their ways because they're doing what they believe is in their best interest...protecting themselves and their assets. We have to stop waiting for them to change, get right, or be supportive. They're not. Once we accept that reality we can operate from a source of power. Also, for those who are faith based, it helps to see the wickedness for what it is. Don't sleep on the fact that you're supposed to be hated because the hater of all things that are good is constantly chipping away at your professional self esteem. We even believe that once we get the PhD and other degrees they'll respect us. In many cases it's the exact opposite. However, that's neither here nor there because we come from something greater than degrees. Stand in His greatness and glory and stop trying to do it alone. Work on your spiritual development every single day and don't dim your spiritual light. My mom always says "Quietly turn the light on and they'll see who you really are." I truly love that woman!!! 🙂

My aunt died from stress related to being blackballed in academia.She had cancer.
She had a PhD from Harvard, was beautiful and brilliant among many other things. She came here young from Liberia, Africa and did everything "right", per SE

Racism and bullying is real in academia against black women by both white men and women. I went through it as well.
But the murder rate is worse than the experience of racism; White people are not murdering black women at a rate 6x higher than other groups of people.

I never understood how serious this was until I started a role as the only black woman in my division. I started experiencing covert bullying and brought it to the attention of both my bosses. As of now I don’t think it’s been addressed openly. Just swept under the rug. I walk in with my head held high only because of my faith in God. But I can’t imagine how over years you just get tired.

I suffered two break downs! I met a few women black women from NASA while I was away that we’re experiencing it too! 2 or 3 years I had co-worker who suffered a major heart attack or stroke due to the treatment a few years ago. And as of November 2023, she passed away! It’s been so sad to watch and see. And to know it was allowed!
I just found out how they will ensure your failure at the top. I got hit with "we're not aligned" meanwhile my numbers crushed my predecessors.

So true. I was let go from many positions because I was “not in alignment” but the most successful person ever in the positions.
I was generally the only black person and only woman in each place.
I decided to focus on my kids after experiencing it enough.
I’ve worked in Corporate America 14 years I can attest it’s very very very difficult as a black woman. I felt my voice was never heard, silenced, and ignored. It hurts deeply.
I also love how asking questions or disagreeing makes you combative. But when other people do it, there is no issue.
Add to that the in interesting conundrum of your ideas, solutions and projects being trivialized then interestingly appropriated by male and/or non black counterparts, resulting in praise and promotion for the thieves.

It’s true. Black women have it hard in many professional settings. If we’re to quiet, it’s a problem. Our natural hair is not accepted. We can’t just be our authentic self. It’s so sad. 💔

@@Brandiisbeloved Your Mom is absolutely correct. I’m a RN and I work in the ICU. I’m the only black ICU nurse in my department. I have good days and bad days. Racism definitely still exists. The patients that come in that are black, are gonna be so happy to see someone that looks like them. They know they will be treated right. Our ancestors fought hard and endured a lot for the freedom we have today. You hold your head up high and you get that degree. It’s so much more you can do after you get your BSN. It makes me smile when our people succeed!! 😊

Oh ladies, we need to talk. This same pattern sadly exists in private and public sectors too. I almost died last year due to bullying and harassment by a white colleague at work who was having an unusually close relationship with our white male supervisor.

@@rosejames5172 I didn’t realize that a LOT of black women get bullied at work for no apparent reason. This is becoming a trend, and it is unacceptable!!!! I do agree with you to sue them; however, it is easier said than done. Most of these companies, and CEOs have the means to hire high power attorneys that is why they are so comfortable doing it in the first place. The sigma that black women are mad, aggressive, and uncooperative is the only thing they keep using against us even though they are the perpetrators. I really wish that black women will come and stand together to fight against these bullies.
My advice is to never stay passed abuse! I’m in early childhood in NYC as a Director. This shows that you do not value yourself and just like any abuser, it will get worse. I’ve left several jobs because I’m not about to sit around and be gaslit or played with. I have gained generous raises by leaving whenever I see a sign of abuse. Do not stay!

I’ve learned this and left my job after a year. I kept asking for help and they were not listening so I said I’m leaving. I don’t regret it because I’m pouring into art practice and I love myself much more for setting boundaries. Don’t take mess for a check!

So many red flags in this story. As someone who has been targeted, this feels to me like more than just “we want you to quit”, but organized targeting which is a completely different ballgame and designed to lead to this very outcome. This happens very often to promising Black women who are trying to create progress in ways that will truly transform; see things for what they truly are and are vocal about those realities; are single and don’t have the most robust support systems to stand with them. It’s written off as “mental health” when in reality, the person was mentally fine before the program designed to destroy them did its job. A mentally healthy person who is assaulted emotionally, psychologically will absolutely decline. That’s not a mental health issue. That is an issue of systemic abuse and destruction. May she rest in power and peace.

So true. This behavior is part of the higher ed culture where Black women who are very talented are targeted by the majority. The sad part is when other black women directly help in targeting other black women who try to stand up. Tokenism is a real thing.
Gloria Naylor who wrote the famous book, "The Women of Brewster Place," also wrote a book called "1996" a fictionalized memoir of her gang stalking, targeting experience.
After reading her suicide note and watching the subsequent videos, my heart ached for her. I could feel her pain so deeply. Thank you for following up on this case and the travesty that has followed.

I 100% agree. Love to all of my sistas and even to white women who are oppressed as well. They won't admit it but they're under the grips of patriarchy as well. However, they'd rather fight BW than fight their own men who keeps his foot on their necks as well. However, my core issue at present is to express love and care for BLACK women who need support and need each other.

I encouraged my daughter to quit a job for her own mental health because she was being bullied. Her manager/owner said he could not say that it wouldn't continue. He said she could leave... so he condoned it. She was at a breaking point.
They call it managing out. It happens when management has decided you are unwanted. I’m a man and it happened to me over a decade ago.
I moved on but I refused to let people drive me to the point of self harm. Never give the SOBs the satisfaction of knowing they broke you.
This makes me cry, literally crying at my desk because I know all too well this struggle. I'm going through the exact same thing with CCSPD

This story reminds me of Zora Neale Hurston. She was so brilliant and contributed a lot to the cultural research space. She was denied scholarships, received poor letters of recommendations from white colleagues who valued her work and sent her in their place to various countries to DO the work. She wanted a doctorate degree but couldn't afford to pay her way through the program. She fought and did what she needed to do to stay a float. I'm proud of that. However, in the end, she ended up in the poorhouse and had an unmarked grave. It burns me up how someone who overcame so much could be disregarded like that. It's not easy even in 2024.
I think a reminder here to ensure that we as black woman don't cling on to our professional title so tightly to where it leads us to eliminate ourselves. If nothing else, you're a child of God. Every other title in this life can come and go.

@@meancookie89 Right. The other thing that happened was that the black male "greats" of the Harlem Renaissance also sabatoged her for writing in dialect while half of them, Ralph Ellison most notably, wrote misogynst-filled works that were highly lauded.
As I say all the time, "They not putting ME in the grave early," and trust, "they" can be anybody. God has helped me move up and forward time and time again. It may not have been in the way that I would prefer but there hasn't been a person who's been able to block me!

There was no way he could mess with my mental health. My parents taught me how to deal with idiots like him and not by showing all 32 teeth.

It is definitely in the public sector, specifically the federal government. DEI is a punchline with no real follow-through.
The bullying is a way to indirectly say they don't want us there or getting ahead. I've been bullied in my last 3 jobs. Those jobs were giving or taken by people who hated to compete with me to get those jobs. So crushing my spirit was the only option for them to take.

Keep the B in HBCU's. This man should never have been allowed to be president of this university. HBCU's were established as safe spaces to educate black people. The need is still just as urgent today, as indicated by this man's egregious behavior.

Very sad that this beautiful, intelligent woman felt that this was the only response to the unfair treatment she received. Prayers for all her family members and loved ones that are grieving. She seems like she had so much to offer and had touched the lives of so many, regardless of what the university that wrongly terminated her thought.
I’m glad that Dr. Bailey’s death is not just being swept under the rug. I pray for real justice and that he soul rests.

This is very sad to see. I went to school with her. She was very sweet and would have never imagined this happening to her. I will forever remember her strolling around the party with her AKA sisters. So many memories.

For real. I’m black, educated. I’m in a position that REQUIRED my degree, yet my coworkers, who have less education, treat me as if I’m beneath them. Hell, I’ve been the only one with another black person sitting at a table at a meeting, and NO ONE joined is. It’s real.
I’m reminded of the Black executive female who was fired wrong over at Fed ex .They wanted her to take a pay cut but she refuses ,and they fired her 366 millions dollars later they got her message loud and clear she was awarded that much and the judge said yes the jury sent a message awarding her that

It's not the panacea to systemic injustice but it's a start and she could even have founded her own school someday, living to tell her story of triumph. Nonetheless, Her death won't be in vain.

Blacks kill each other more than white folks harm blacks
As an African-American woman who has spent most of her career in academic medicine, I'm now ready to retire and I'm almost 70. How did I survive?
I had five pieces of wisdom that helped me preserve my sanity:
The first was from a Chinese-American man, a well-connected chief resident who seemed to walk on water. One day I asked him how he did it without getting depressed (as I was) and he took me off into a quiet corner of our hospital ward and told me that he hated the hierarchy as much as I did! But remember, he said, THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS! Your friends and your family are your top priority. Be polite (not political) and remember where your strength comes from.
The second was from a Korean-American man, my supervising attending who helped me complete my papers and reports by telling me, Don't be such a perfectionist! Just get the work done.
Unless it involves a patient's life or well-being, JUST DO IT! And do it on time.
In other words, don't take the non-essential stuff too seriously.
The third was from an older African-American senior physician. She was a political "animal" and enjoyed cutting off unpleasant colleagues at the knees. While vicious politics are not my bag, her one piece of useful advice was: KEEP A DIARY. If something comes up and you may be called on the carpet, you have an excellent record of what happened. Your opponent probably didn't keep a diary and may have a hard time proving anything against you.
The fourth comes from an Indian-American senior doctor who urged me not to be so shy. She literally pushed me across the floor of a conference hall to meet a prominent doctor who might help me in my career. And it did!
Lastly, my white male colleges have shown me that bullying is not limited to people of color and women. A white male can be made into a scapegoat just as easily. I have seen this happen more times than I can count! Making friends with everyone often leads to a greater understanding of everyone's pain.
And here's one piece of advice from me: Don't be afraid to quit your job! It's not worth getting sick, losing your sanity or committing suicide. There is a whole wide world outside the gates of the university and life just might be more pleasant on the outside.

I have colleagues who also work in Academia and when I asked about their experiences they were at a loss for words and implied that they deal with alot in that industry.
The problems outlined in the report, are the same in corporate America.

I am a middle aged AM women and have seen this system used against Black people in academia and the work place. Same education as….enough to drive you insane. Black women are leading in the business sector and even here they are moving the goal post just because. Look how far this system has made its way to the continent of Mother Africa with it unjust behavior of Black people. If we don’t build and own our own, we do the next generation a disservice. As a person who has been bullied in the workplace, there needs to be a national spotlight on bullying in the workplace! There are only a few states that are attempting to address bullying in the workplace. On this matter, we are way behind some other countries when it comes to resources, navigation, and legal pathways to address bullying in the workplace. We must do better!
Being bullied for having a higher education is a real thing! It doesn’t need to be a very high degree or education, just higher than the one abusing or attacking you. Mine came from my ex who was uneducated and very abusive and narcissistic. He literally told me about two weeks before graduation, I should drop out of school. Bizarre, I know, but true. I graduated, however, many women never do because of this type of a abuse. Some men can’t stand a woman with an education, she is seen as a threat to a weak or insecure man. This has been playing out all over our country and even the world for centuries. God made woman from a rib, not a foot. We are NOT beneath you. God Almighty gave us, hopes, dreams, ambition, and intelligence, for the same reason he gave it to men or other races: for it to be used. This is so sad.
While true for some, this kind of comment is not helpful in the larger picture. Unity is the greater good even as internalized oppression is being stamped out. Sorry for your pain! Let men and women help you to grieve it, release it and try not to pass it on.

I agree with this. My manager tried her best to degrade and bully anyone under under her. She particularly targeted a colleague with a Masters and me also with a Masters. In my opinion, she had a problem with anyone with a higher education level than herself. I’m happy to say that eventually she was let go, but I regret that it took so long for her abusive, degrading behavior to be exposed.

The last one hired is the easiest one to fire, and historically, Black women have been that person. This woman's death can't be seen only as an individual case. There is so much disdain for Black women in the American culture. The bizarre irony of a Black woman being fired by a white man from her post at an HBCU! We cannot "overcome" as individuals.

I'm black, went to HBCU- my mentor black and she took my work made it into curriculum and when I asked school for help they ignored me while making profit and I'm homeless. It is happening at an HBCU and the people behind this are in sororities and fraternities.
I have an odd feeling she didn't commit suicide.for the reasons led to believe. My teacher trying to get me to do it to myself so she can continue to "be me".....

Well, she left a very detailed note in which she literally called out her oppressor by name and she made it clear who the accessories to the deeds were. I believe she committed suicide after everything else failed. She asked for FMLA and was denied. That in itself is criminal! The saddest post mortem issue is that the university is doing NOTHING to address mental health among staff and students even after this tragic loss. The president has been restored by his largely black cast of trustees and the faculty and staff are mute (i.e. probably afraid to speak out). Notice how the students are marching alone. Notice how there are no faculty or staff. If I'm the parent of a Lincoln student my child would be transferring. Why be at a place where blatant bullying and oppression will go unchecked? What message is this sending to our young Black men and women? Nope...pack up and get out of there! If they're going to let a white man run it, then let him deal with the attrition that's resulted from this incident.

This is the absolute Truth! I have a doctoral degree and I am usually the "ONLY" Black person, and "ONLY" Black woman in the department! We deal with overt and covert racism, bullying, and targeting! The higher our education, the more competent we are, the more we are targeted! It is exhausting! We have worked hard, and earned the right to be in these positions, but it comes at a high price, our mental health!
It's not fair to call someone racist we know nothing about nor have ANY proof in writing etc to support this case. That's defamation. Innocent until proven guilty.
If it was vice versa (of any other race in general), claiming someone is racist with no actual support would not be ok either.
@@LoveMimiCheri I see some great leaders who are black who are in my profession and they are thriving. Mental health is important no matter what race, culture, age, etc. I am usually the ONLY Russian in the companies I work at. Yet, that should not be a deterrent. There's also plenty cases where people avoid any conflict with the race and give passing grades (heard of it at riverside university), social services (have a friend who works there), etc. It happens.
Most importantly, it feels like there is a lack of mental support and figuring out there is a way out vs. turning to suicide. It is awful she has turned to it. And having been close to it myself and using suicide line, I understand the battle, but it must be said that resources must be used too.
I feel so bad for her! It’s definitely been times I felt like killing myself .
I’m praying for peace for my life and people who have dealt with suicidal thoughts . 🙏🏾❤️

This happened to me and all lot of African American black women and some men at DHHs. Most of them died from heart issues, from the harassment and retaliation!

They try to paint a picture of us being angry, standoffish, and other things that aren’t true. I cannot be myself but a partial version in the workplace which is sad. I’ve been trying to change the stigma but we gotta come together to do so.

I am from Missouri so I feel connected to this university as the only HBCU there and I have friends that have graduated from LU. Dr. Bailey is also my sorority sister. A female friend of the family was targeted by a new hire male manager who went above and beyond to make her uncomfortable. ( when that happens they have someone else they want in that role) She knew what time it was and found a new 600k position with a 100k sign on bonus and left her old position with a low 100k severance. The strides that were are going backwards intentionally.
It is extremely hard to prove HR claims especially if the victim is no longer her. I believe she was violated at an HBCU which should have been a safe place for her. Unfortunately, the President was found innocent, but if he did harass her I hope he does not get one night of sleep until he acknowledges what he has done.
I’m just so tired of this narrative for us. At this point, I’m ready to move to Africa and build something new. I know that comes with its own set of challenges, but I want my children to have a different experience

Deflecting responsibility from the institution
As a black woman, I've had the worst experiences with black men, white women, and hispanic women. I've actually had the most positive with white men...I guess it really depends🤷🏿♀️. The professor did the right thing... I think about doing this everyday. Who wants to exist in a society like this. Honestly, between the red pill community, the toxic, self-loathing black community, and social media all these things are design to have people self-destruct. This is what people like Elon Musk want to see, psychological warfare that results in people taking their own lives....so he's blameless. That's why he's against having mechanisms in place for people to proect themselves online. He's evil. The professor did the absolute RIGHT thing...there is absolutely zero reason as black women to want to participate, procreate, or be an active participant in today's society. I glad she found peace. I hope one day I can follow in her footsteps and find peace as well.

It’s disheartening to hear such a tragic story. May God have mercy on her. I’m not racist, I’m just making an observation based on my experience and the experience of black woman that I know. It’s not only higher education, nor corporate America, it’s any job and any position in which a black women holds and there is mixed staffing and the leadership or administration is predominantly of a white majority.
We as black women are constantly being subjected to criticism, harassment, being bullied, a deaf ear and lack of support not only from leadership or administrators who are white but from other black persons in the higher positions don’t want to rock the boat for fear of losing their own positions, which is disappointing and disgusting.
And yes we’re expected remain strong, accept the treatment, excuse and help the poor white damsels who are stressed and having a hard time and lash out at you for no reason, remain silent and turn the other cheek. I’m too much like Malcolm to turn the other cheek.
WE HAVE TO STAND STRONG TOGETHER SISTERS!!! SUPPORT the black-owned businesses and organizations. We can absolutely be diverse, but don’t ever get to a point where white people become the majority in your black founded organization nor step down and let them takeover for fear of closure due to lack of funding that you worked so hard to establish, because this ugly pattern will only be repeated.
White people will never let us lead their establishments because of lack of funding, they’d rather burn it down and collect the insurance before they’d allow that to happen.
So we have to learn to swallow our pride and close shop. Better yet we need to constantly educate our black communities on the importance of building our own establishments and supporting each other.

Feel saddened, but somehow supported, by knowing I'm not alone in the experience. Soooo much stress and gaslighting. Told my MBA was only recognized "regionally." Outperformed my colleagues, with verifiable metrics, and they still posted my job behind my back. Years of this with different companies affected my health to the point I had to tag out. I'm so much happier and things are working out better than imaged.
