- An Indiana family is grieving after their 10-year-old son died by suicide earlier this month. Sammy Teusch was known for his kindness, energetic personality and love of the outdoors. At a school about 15 minutes away from me, a boy was severely bullied. The kids mentally torturing this poor boy were telling him to kill himself. He managed to bring a gun into the school and shot himself in the head in the lunch room in front of his entire class. This happened roughly two years ago and he was I believe 13 at the time. This is a serious issue not being taken seriously.
I can't imagine this....I don't live in the US...a 13 yr old doing this is a pure horror to experience I guess...just unimaginable!!!

True. I've always struggled with the concept that bullies are victims because in their heads they are picked on. When someone has you in a full Nelson and is stuffing you in a locker [I'm speaking from my experience], it's really hard to empathise with a bully
When bullying leads to suicide, as it often does, murder charges should be filed.

Let me tell you something, words DO HURT. After my Sister died, I was 10 and she was 12. My fellow schoolmates said "I'm glad your Sister is dead". I was 10!!!!! Nothing either could or would be done. I HATED those kids. They made me feel suicidal and homicidal towards them. I'd much rather get punched in my face, than to have half the things said to me that was said to me. That sticks with you. I'm 33, and it STILL sticks with me. It changed me entirely as a person.

I've been physically sexually and mentally abused it's sad to say I rather get beat because years of mental abuse u believe the lies low self esteem had a suicide attemt sometimes surviving is a huge job on its own and it gets hard with so much hate in the world

Most bullies come from unhappy homes, neglect, abuse. They don’t have parents who care to listen to them. So they act out, hurting others the way they feel hurt.
sure but there's a flip side to that too. parents miss teaching their kids emotional resilience and how to cope with social ills to the point that a kid would take their own life. there is responsibility there too

Kids are smarter than we think. My son was bullied for 4 months this year. He suffered in silence for months and didn't tell a soul. He changed completely. He was very moody, kept a bad attitude, and didn't want anyone to talk to him or bother him. His grades dropped. He was faking sick so he didn't have to go to school. The 4 little kids were telling my son to go off himself & other ways to die. They are learning at a very young age nowaday...It's sad! Smh!It's just heartbreaking 💔 😢! It crushed him and myself. Children can be so hateful and mean. My son is the sweetest 11yro you will probably ever meet. He has a big heart. He loves to make friends with everyone. He is very social. Smart. The last thing I ever thought would happen, did! I was so glad my son broke down and told me what was going on at school. I was able to save my son b4 it was too late. My heart breaks for this family. 💔 Truly does.

They won't! 💯 makes me sick !! Even the 7 girls that left a voice-mail on our phone telling us she WOULD bring a pew pew to school and she didn't care who else they got. I PROMISE you they did NOTHING. We physically stopped sending her when we caught her biting herself . We gave them 24 hrs to find her suitable schooling that they could 💯 guarantee her safety. That's exactly what they did at no cost to us.. meetings, evidence, all of it and they didn't care til we stopped sending her and look, in 24 hrs had they not we were going public with everything . They actually kept it up on the school computers after she transferred , BUT , the Mrs started showing up on doorsteps VERY angry amd aggressive of ya know what I mean. that's when it actually came to a complete end. Sometimes u just gotta whip that arse of the parents to let em know u ain't doing this garbage to my child anymore. 💯

I have two boys. And was bullied growing up. Kids can be evil. Do not underestimate what your kids are at school doing. They are not little angels out of your sight! Proactively work through these things with them! Zero tolerance should be had as a parent for this kind of behavior!

Based on the number of times the parents reported this to the school, *the only possible explanation is that the school was actively allowing this to happen.* If I warn you about something 10+ times and you take no action to prevent it, I can only assume you want it to happen. Because *if you didn't want it to happen, you would be doing something about it!!!*

It is also old enough to understand the pain that their bullying is causing as well. They may not realise that their behaviour could push someone to take their own life to escape the misery, but bullies, at that age and even younger, know that they are making their victim's life an absolute nightmare and bullies thrive on that. I understand how Sammy's dad feels but I hope that this hits his bullies hard, hard enough that they never dare treat any other person the way they treated him.

My daughter was bullied and the school guidance counselors told me i should medicate her!🤬 That was the day i pulled her out of public school and put her in private school. I understand every school is different, but did that end up being a better decision for your family? I work in public schools and am leaving after this semester and now, I am unsure if I ever want my kids in public schools because of it. I'd love to hear your experience
Our son was bullied in middle school. The principal did nothing. The parents, administrators and the bullies are all responsible. Thankfully , from my own childhood trauma, I saw the suicidal signs and got him counseling. Even if there are no signs, we have to advocate for our kids. Kids don’t often fight back because they are afraid they will be the ones to get in trouble. This happened with our son. He’s the one who got caught retaliating and got into trouble. We always told our son to use his words to tell the bullies that he doesn’t like it and to never start something. However, we also told him that we will always support him finishing it, even if he got in trouble. Our kids need to be equipped to handle this stuff and empowered to finish it.
As long as their getting paid and fulfilling the minimum requirements at their job, some teachers, admin, or superintendents don’t care. As long as it’s not their own kid, they don’t care!

This is a BRAVE dad and brother coming public this soon. I am a teacher in the Canadian public school system and really, really try to stop any bullying I see. There is no acceptable cause for it, ever.
I was bullied hardcore myself through grades 7-8 (at Christian private school, to all those who think that it’s *only* in public school). It impacts me to this day.
I teach a bunch of different grades, and the dad *nails* it about some kids thinking that “leading” means “being mean”. As young as possible-talking 5-6 years old-I want kids to hear the direct message from as many adults as possible that “being a leader” means kindness, helping, standing up for kids you see being bullied, etc.
My sincerest condolences to this whole family. This is so awful.

Many parents can’t be bothered to parent. The school and bus drivers can only do so much to stop it. If the parents don’t think it’s a big deal then why would their kids stop? I must send heartfelt thanks to NewsNation for allowing the interviewer to let Sammy's father and brother express their feelings in such a beautiful and touching way. Often times, reporters cut people's comments short but this reporter did a marvelous job of letting them mourn as well as celebrate Sammy publicly. Listening to both of them was so fulfilling to us, as viewers. Xander's comments at the very end said everything that needed to be said about love, hope and light.

Some teachers are bullies. Two of mine were bullied by teachers. One was an alcoholic.
The other was "afraid" of my son because he was so big. She screamed at him. I heard her

@user-tc6hi9ns4j totally get it. I had to handle my daughter's bully myself. I went off on the kid and the mom for being racist and messing with my kid. They knew my husband was black but did not know mom was Mexican. Should've I cussed out the kid then mom in Spanish? Probably not. Do I regret it? Absolutely not. Did it happen again? Nope, mom transferred him to another school. This kid was about 6 or 7.

I’m so so sorry! I lost my brother suddenly as an adult and this loss completely destroyed and reshaped me. I learned that siblings are often called the forgotten mourners. I hope both siblings get all the support and help he needs to continue to grow and process this grief. I hope his family continues to come together and keep sharing his story because it’s important! Bullying is learned behavior our kids mimic what they see and learn from the adults in their lives. This shouldn’t have ever happened! Dad was 100% right real leaders lead with compassion and love not fear!

More than that...that behavior is celebrated by a lot of folks, particularly in the Corporate West. They think it is "weeding out the weak" from the gene pool.
As an adult who has struggled with suicidal ideation over a lifetime it breaks my heart just imagining a CHILD experiencing those same kinds of feelings. To be in an emotional place where dying seems the only way to make the pain go away is devastating. Man’s inhumanity to man seems to always win out. RIP🥀

I really hope this family get the justice they deserve. The school, the bullies and most importantly the parents of the bullies need to be held accountable. These kids bring to the school what they see and hear at home.
School should be liable for bullying when it’s been reported
It is so sad to see after all this time that bullying is still such a serious issue. I had some amazing teachers and friends, but all it takes is just one bad apple to ruin everything. We need to fight against this by sharing our experiences and spreading the word as best we can. Back in my hellementary school days, there were a few teachers, 2 in particular, a couple, there last name being Cole, which was very fitting for their hearts, and as for the other, even though he wasn’t nearly as bad, he was still able to make my list due to his incredible ignorance, and 2 IAs, one in particular who was rarely around but was a much bigger bully, that were bullies along with 4 students in particular who were notably worse then the other bullies. I went through a lot, believe me. To top it all off there was this one time when I went to the principal's office to talk to the vice principal about the bullying from the teachers and other students and I was angry, sobbing and the works and I did not hold back on how I felt or on what I was saying, but little did I know that the system for the entire schools speakers was on, so everyone in the entire school heard everything.
Now, some of the things that was done to a good friend of mine, who has Cerebral Palsy, well, she had an instructional assistant, same one I had, who at times put the lock of her locker on backwards as she was being timed, sometimes also having her wear an intentionally heavy nap sack when she was walking with her crutches when she already had a hard enough time with nothing extra weighing her down, on the odd occasion had her crutches put towards the classroom door so she had to use the desks to balance herself to get to them, one day she slipped and fell in the mud on her way to one of the portables and she was forced to enter the classroom. As for me, I have roughly 30 regular sized pages with regular sized font single spaced. I think it was around 50 or so before it was edited for me of a bunch of the stuff that happened to me.
Anyways, after the schools PA system incident, the bullying got even worse. It did not matter that mom and dad called and tried to help. No one was able to do anything at all for me, nothing, I was a caged animal with no escape/no way to get any kind of help. Even now, emotional abuse is not something that the cops will typically intervene in. Then one day towards the end of the 7th grade I just snapped completely on one of the bullies, ripped his shirt, tackled him to the ground and would not stop going completely ballistic on him, just absolutely out of control. The lunchroom recess supervisor who basically did pretty much nothing against emotional bullying ended up pulling us apart and if she hadn't have stepped in then I would not have stopped as I had all those many times of rage being unleashed all at once.
The thing about these days is with the internet, social media, etc it just seems like there is a lot more evil stuff going on because it is a lot easier to uncover it, and kids/teens, as well as adults, seniors, etc need to be encouraged to stand up to bullies, if they can, and to stand up against bullying when they see it happen and to secretly record if things get bad enough. Recording live stream if possible just incase they get caught.having those recording being recorded to some secret place on the web that the victim can have access to those files when and if they ever need them. Recordings that will never be seen/known by the bullies if they do happen to snatch the recorder, if this advanced type of option is even possible.
As for the job end of things, with my second last boss he was a real master at manipulation. He could be anywhere from being one of the most vicious to one of the nicest/most loving people you have even met on the drop of a dime/flip of a switch and knew how to pull peoples mental/emotional strings, and believe me when I say that I make a really good target especially during some days when I was the first/only one there where at times there were alcohol and beer bottles over the floor and during those time especially he had the kind of rage that literally shook my body and went right through to my very soul.
One of the worst things that pretty much sums up modern day justice was when a fellow worker called workers rights and they gave the boss a 2 weeks advance notice of them coming by to inspect the place, obviously giving him enough time to make enough changes for as long as the inspections went on. He never had more than 4 people working since anymore than 4 would mean the occasional inspections. The worker who reported him got blacklisted and was not able to get another job, then one day we found out that he committed suicide.
I was mentally and emotionally trapped there for like 8 years and as such I have lots of stuff that I typed about that job/torments as well as a couple videos I made of shots that I took in secret, there was one time in particular where the boss, who was a strong guy took a large post and just chucked it at me in a way so it barely missed me.
School's can't stop kids from bullying other kids all the time. It should be their job to help and try to keep a lot of it from happening, but they will never stop it all.

All you need to do is get legislation passed to impose consequences on the parents of bullies. I can guarantee you that if parents can lose everything they have if their kid is a bully, they're going to work a lot harder at stopping that kid
I had experienced bullying during elementary and high school years .Kids are ruthless and relentless,I tried to fight back with them but they just wouldn’t stop .It was a trauma that I endured.I had experienced depression and social anxiety till today .I’m sorry for your loss ,he doesn’t deserve this .

My son is 30 years old now. He is still traumatized by school bullying. He was assaulted and had a gun pulled on him. He was taken out of school immediately and got his GED. School did NOTHING. RIP…

He's hurting like you are because he lost his brother. If you ignore his needs it will cause such a deep hole in him that he may never heal!

Keep sharing his story, so many can relate and can learn from this. Try to always keep an open line of communication with your kids where they feel like something can change if absolutely necessary. Help is not shameful, support groups, therapists, just someone to talk to can make such a difference. His story will hopefully help provoke some of the changes we need like bullying being better addressed, and a better insight on some of the hidden struggles that kids are dealing with as well as pressures we can’t even see. My condolences to the family, so many of us can relate to the struggles your son went through, and are eager to see changes for the better.

Bullying the parents -- usually online or via text -- of children who die by suicide is commonplace nowadays. Sick, isn't it. And the police state that they can't do anything until an online parent bully actually acts on a threat.

Schools need to address bullies with zero tolerance. My son, and two other boys, were bullied mercilessly. The school guidance counselor pulled the boys out of class to "teach" them how to handle the bullying. The bully NEVER had any consequences. Schools today are F'd up. DO BETTER.
They would just recommend medications to make them feel better. Or blame them for the bullying by saying "What did you do to cause him to act that way".

My youngest daughter's step brother had a seizure at a Highschool in San Diego. The kid's instead of helping him started kicking him at hitting him, and NEVER helped. They left him there to die. He ended up in a Coma. This is so wrong and heartbreaking!! He was different. What is wrong with being different???

Some kids did it in front of certain kids but not in front of others. I was taught to not give attention to any of it, not to show it affected me, but it did. That was hard, but thankfully it stopped eventually. That worked because they didn't get the reaction they wanted. People just either talked to me or didn't and I was happy with my super small circle.

A lot of investigation is needed if society does want to make parents/caretakers accountable.
Ie:
Were the p/c aware the child was bullying / had unacceptable social behaviours?
If so were they doing anything to help/teach the child acceptable social behaviour?
If p/c were well aware and teaching the child how to behave then in that regard they have been accountable.
If they knew their child was a bully and had had reports about it and ignored reality then of course they should be deemed unfit. If a p/c has been told their child has a behavioural disorder like being a bully then it is p/c duty of care to do something about it.

I had this with my son and I went to the school many times and one day confronted the parents and guess what? The parents didn't know. All the times I complained no procedures were followed. No disciplinary. No consquences for the bullies. No parental Involvement. There needs to be a governing body for parents to complain to and liase with that ensure the school face heavy consquences includ8ng the bullies if it repeats after once.

As a former elementary educator, I refused to allow bullying in my classroom. Also, if I heard that a student was being bullied outside of my classroom, I did everything within my power to stop it. It is ignored and taken lightly by teachers and administration.

I used to get bullied a lot in my middle school years ago and I did survive from bullying, It's quite challenging. Now im 19, hearing from this died from suicide from bullying, just breaks me. I wonder. Is it a cycle of abuse that leads to bullies being mean to their peers? What’s going on at home to make these kids so hateful? I remember being bullied but it never escalated to more than words until about 6th grade when a boy punched me on my arm and left a bruise. I stayed away from him but he kept bullying other kids. In 8th grade a boy would bully a lot of the girls but he began punching kicking one of the girls even more. I stood up and threatened him with a rock paperweight my teacher had on his desk. He backed off all while our teacher watched. Oftentimes teachers know what is happening and never act or choose to ignore it . RIP Sammy 💜
The pain on his brother’s face is heartbreaking
That pain will be on his face for the rest of his life, as it will be for the parents, the pain of losing your loved one, whether it's your child or your sibling to suicide is the most devastating feeling that anyone could go through and I don't get the young kids I think. It's impulsive and she's right. I've had a lot of time. You've even think of that. My daughter was A. Intelligent world travel's her had masters and nutrition. Ran the Philly marathon and 3 and a 1/2 years after she got married March 25th 2020. She ended her own life but A32. She lived an incredible life besides traveling to Afric and Peru and all the things that she did. She was an incredible Christian and she believes that she was gonna go to Jesus when I guess when she died. She was undagnosed with mental health issues. She never told anybody that she was feeling suicidal. I do believe her husband was threatened by it several times but he was a very quiet. Sort of guy and he never told us because they were both adults. Maybe she said not to say anything. I'll never know that well. I did ask that universe. He said they don't really talked about telling anybody and but my point is that it's been 4 years old. The whole that having my daughter for 32 years has left in my heart and her 3 older siblings who were there from day one also, but the face that they have right now, 11 days in they're gonna be in total, denial shock for probably at least a year or so, it's it's. Gonna be an upper down journey. But you think you're like? Oh I feel I'm making progress. You're not making progress. Because the second year is worse. The third year is you have to really face. The fact that this really did happen because you really don't believe want to tell him at first my first 2 years was I was in therapy and I just refused to believe that she did this. I thought her husband killed her. I spoke to the troopers. I want to blame anybody. But what she actually had planned for months in advance. This little boy did not plan this for months in advance. Yes, unless he had someone that he was seeing on social media where some of these influencers are actually ending their own lives a little bit older teenagers, which again is very hard to find a support group for the age. My daughter was compared to all the young. Teenagers were there at such a stage in our lifestyle. That you're not even with death. Is my daughter knew what? It was, I was not afraid to die. And that's the difference between adult and in their life and child. The child has no concept and doesn't think of anything beyond that, particular second and my daughter wrote 7 letters to her husband I had to think in about it for at least 6 months beforehand so my prayers to the fami'm on it. Their journey is just starting they will never be the same. I'm sorry to say that. 's absolutely the truth. You look at a mirror and you won't even know who you're looking at you. Look at your other children's faces and you see sadness. A change is the family tremendously. It changes all the relationships. My heart breaks for you, I can't even imagine.
My daughter had a bully in high school, the girl would sit in class taking pictures of her and posting on social media calling her a slut, etc. This happened nearly every day right in front of the teacher and nothing was done. The kids weren’t allowed to have their phones out period but this girl was doing it in plain view of the teacher. I called the school, spoke with counselor, teachers and principal and was assured that they didn’t tolerate bullying. Yet it continued every day. My daughter finally came to me and asked if she would get in trouble for fighting if she stood up to the bully. I told her to do what she had to do. So the next day she walked right up to the girl and punched her in the face. The girl’s boyfriend, a football player, tackled my daughter to the floor of the cafeteria. The school called and asked me if I knew she was going to do it and I told them yes I told her to handle it because they didn’t. So my child was suspended for 8 days and the bully and her boyfriend didn’t get in any trouble at all. But she never bothered my daughter again.
Good for her!!! That's exactly what some kids need. As for these f*cking phones, they should be put away at the beginning of the day and taken out when school is over. I'm glad I grew up when I did; no phones or social media. None of these adults have the balls to control anything. Don't get me wrong because I think the majority of young people are great. However, there are a few who manage to make it miserable for others. There should be zero toleration for this sh*t.

My issue is some of the questions that are being asked is just awful!! This is the most devastating story. I’m so heartbroken for this family and for this poor boy who suffered too much. Bullying unfortunately has been a problem forever, but because of social media it has amped up enormously. There is no way for kids to get away from bullying.

Here is the thing though, I am forever changed by how I was treated and what was not done about it so even if your daughter would have struggled through, she would not have come out of it without feeling broken and jaded.... so without question, you saved her.

We told our 8 year old who is bullied because he is heavy to turn the other cheek. He did and the bully pushed him so our son punched him in the face. We got a call from school to pick up our son he would be suspended. We said um no he can and will beat the shit out of ANYONE who puts hands on him first and that is with our permission. ..after that the bully was suspended for 3 days and our son stayed. Tried to call his parents and they don’t answer our phone calls.
My daughter was bullied out of school after Covid. She was 13 She got really tall , gained some weight. Went through a lot of changes at that age.Her own step cousin was the ring leader. Her friends since kindergarten..I hold the parents accountable. All the girls who bullied her had mommy issues . I was everywhere with my daughter. I ended up taking her out of public school . She overcame everything but lost out on school events she deserved to experience. She swears it’s the best choice .. She was panicking every morning. No child should experience this. All kids grow up and change .. We need to hold parents accountable. For their children’s behavior..

My Son is a substitute teacher for our local school district. He was told by one school that he could no longer sub for their school because apparently several students reported that they didn't like this substitute teacher. My son said those students that reported him he had told the students they were not allowed to play games on their phones or their chromebooks. It seems like students are running the school system not the school admistration or the teachers. Is it no wonder that we are loosing good teachers?

My high school's chemistry teacher loved teaching, coached cross country and was a runner, himself, and led the Christian youth council. He got reported by multiple students for being a bad teacher, because he... made us actually read and use our textbooks🙄
I got called to the principal's office to give testimony about the teacher, and told them I thought he was a great teacher and that classmates just didn't like reading and doing the work.
His jokes were pretty lame, but I appreciated his effort and genuine love of teaching. I'm agnostic, so wasn't in anything he coached/taught besides chemistry, but he was a great teacher. Even still, he got let go because too many other students ganged up and complained.
Kids feel entitled and their parents feed this to them. When the kids don't like something, they complain to the parents and in turn, the parents complain to the school. Behavior issues are ridiculously high and there are no consequences. This is a major reason teachers are leaving.
My sister in law shares the horror stories of kids in elementary cursing her out, throwing their school tablet at her, etc. Each time she reports a child for misbehavior, she is reported by the student for something bogus. Also, she is white and said they teach the kids that white folks are bad in all the schools she works in.
I will never forget Xander. Don't you worry. I was bullied myself many decades ago and it had a lasting effect. I will also never forget Reena Virk who was killed where I live by bullies. We must ALL stand up whenever we see bullying happen. The bully's parents invariably say " its none of your business". It is ALL our business. And I stand up for kids all over the world. My boy was also bullied. We as parents don't know how bad it is because they don't tell us. My boy was only 4 and till 6.5yo he was bullied everyday. We only found out after we moved him to a different school. The previous school did nothing, we brought up the issues for nearly year, and decided it's not getting better. We live in a high social economic area, but the kid who causes trouble are not from our area. He was renting and then moved out of the area but kept coming to our school. This is a government school. 😢 the private school in our area is boys only so we wanted to keep him co-Ed for a few years.

My daughter was bullied when she was little. When I said something about it, the teacher read the class a storybook about how we should all be kind to one another. That was it. On the playground, when the other girls would not let her play with them and the teacher told them not to exclude her, they would say that it was a game for only five people (or whatever number of other girls there were), and the teacher would say, "Oh, okay," instead of, "Do you think I'm stupid? Let her play with you!" This is how schools deal with bullying - not at ALL. It's criminal - these are the people to whom you are entrusting your precious child. And the really sad thing is that these are socially developmental years, and many of the kids who do make it out alive remain awkward and shy throughout their entire lives, because they learned nothing about interaction except to keep your head down because it's nothing but cruelty.
Those bullys should be held accountable for this son's death. No questions needed to be asked. May he RIP! 🙏
Nobody is going to ask why a 10 year old killed himself? Generally to push the average child/teen to suicide they need to be completely isolated. If he had a loving family, had friends, had people who really cared about him, a couple of bullies calling him ugly wouldn't cause him to commit suicide. I have no idea why nobody is questioning this. It is absolutely unfathomably ridiculous that you genuinely believe a couple kids saying "haha your teeth are weird" made him go home and blow his brains out with his dad's gun.

Bullying isnt "haha your teeth look weird", it's "if you show your ugly ass teeth in school again you'll be without teeth entirely."
Or the victim getting ganged up on and being assaulted day after day after day just because he supposedly has weird teeth.

Victim blaming is a bad look whether you shade the victim OR the victims parents. Who btw are also victims and lost their son.

I too have been bullied and cyberbullied, but because I have a good support group I've never genuinely considered killing myself. Essentially what you're saying is that kid was too much of a loser to just not listen to what people say and move on. Otherwise he wouldn't have felt compelled to shoot himself.

It is bullying and without compassion to say it after the fact. This family can't pull Sammy out of school now, they expected support they didn't get from those in authority. Why torment them with what might have been when it is too late for them to change things.

If you really care, volunteer at a local school and speak to bullies and help change their behavior. Don't go and tell parents who JUST LOST THEIR CHILD how they did everything wrong when he DID EVERYTHING he knew to do at the time.

It's so horrible how parents allow their children to bully. I don't believe the parents didn't know. The parents and students who bullied him should be held legally responsible. RIP little angel. May God be with this dad and his brother.
I was bullied as a child in the 60’s and 70’s- my parents weren’t really aware of it. Sammy’s dad- you’re a great dad, you don’t have to explain yourself. Thank you for sharing Sammy’s story.
