4 Girls Arrested for Stealing from ShopRite in Hoboken, NJ

- Around 7:48 PM on March 12, 2024, Sergeant Edward Sellick with the Hoboken Police Department heard on his radio that there was an active shoplifting involving 4 females at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. Sergeant Sellick radioed that he would be responding there, and entered the store around 7:52 PM. As he entered, he made contact with a loss prevention official, who informed him that the shoplifting was still in progress. Sergeant Sellick was led upstairs to the loss prevention office, and he spoke with another person on loss prevention who informed him that 3 of the 4 females had shoplifted there on another occasion as well, but they were unable to apprehend them that time because they were focusing their resources towards another shoplifter.
Sergeant Sellick watched the shoplifting in progress on the store’s surveillance system for about 10 minutes, and he saw the 4 females attempt to conceal some of the items and subsequently pass through self-checkout without paying for all the items. Once they had gotten past the self-checkout register and they were about to exit the store, they were immediately apprehended by loss prevention officials. Around the same time, Sergeant Sellick walked downstairs and waited until the loss prevention official led the 4 females towards the officers. They were escorted upstairs to the loss prevention office, and none of them had identification on them.
They were instructed to provide their names and addresses, and eventually identified as 20-year-old Alana, 20-year-old Amira, 21-year-old Aniyah, and 23-year-old Nikcha. Alana females stated that she was 7 months pregnant and Aniya stated that she was 3 months pregnant. Only Amira was not involved in the other shoplifting that had occurred on the previous day, so police were informed that ShopRite wanted to press charges against the other 3 for that incident as well. After reviewing an itemized printout of the value of stolen items that day, all 4 were placed under arrest.
After they were handcuffed, Officer Shelby Seickendick searched them and all of them were transported to the Hoboken Police Department. At police HQ, they were searched in more detail. Officer Quinn finger printed and photographed each of them, and they were subsequently released with summonses to appear in court. Each of them were charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11(b)(2).

Same. When I was young, maybe 7 or 8, I stole some candy from a gas station for my younger brother. I didn’t yet have the real concept of stealing and theft, so my parents taught me by bringing me right back to the store to return the candy and teach me a much appreciated lesson.

My mother told my siblings & I, IF she EVER found out we had stolen anything OR did ANYTHING against the Law, she would turn us in herself. If you knew my Late mother, you would know, she ABSOLUTELY was not B.S !! When my older brother, who was 14 at that time, stole two comic books & when my mother was cleaning his room & found them & asked where he got them. He first tried to lie & said his best friend lent them to him, she said "I'm calling Victor & I'll ask him". My brother confessed he had taken them, without paying. Mom gave him a quick slap to his face & said "That's for lying". She actually picked up my brother by the Coller & took him to back to the store to tell the owner what he had done. The owner said he wished ALL parents were like this. My brother had to work there for the weekend. Mom said "The next time, I'll call the police". Needless to say, NOT a single one of us EVER even thought of doing this, especially Zach & he was her favorite. He always said that slap hurt him more, because our mom NEVER spanked us. Just that "ONE LOOK" was enough to scare the poop out of us. LOL. Iy REALLY is how a child is brought up. We were taught you WORK for what you want or need !! THANKS MOM !!

Perhaps, (I think quite likely) she was querying why the loss prevention employee was telling her that. It's not his decision, nor place to be telling them that. It short circuits the process, makes it faster, but that's why legislation is so hard to write.

, as police will not come out, so they just ban them from the store, and they still sneak into the store, if the security guard is sharp eyed, and not bored and messing with his mobile, then he catches them, and first checks them, and what falls out of their coats etc is amazing and all expensive items are recovered, but when they are bored and half asleep and only have eyes for their phones, l have stepped in, we are not allowed to touch them, but l have directed them to the self scanners, they make excuses up like I'm paying at customer service desk, to which l reply and is obvious to anyone looking there, it doesn't open until 8 am and the security guard is lost in his own world and hasn't noticed a thing that's gone on.

When my daughter was about 13 she went to the mall with one her friends and the friend asked her to conceal some items for him as he was also concealing some. They got caught and I was the first parent to show up. The security said that she didn't steal anything for herself it was all for her friend but I didn't care, its still theft. The guy friend was sitting there bawling his eyes out and my daughter with a poker face. I asked him if he needed a tissue and my daughter laughed because she knows me. I told him to suck it up, you want to be a thief...you can't show up to jail with swollen eyes. His Dad showed up and the crying got worse even producing snot... He kept trying to console his kid and that's where the problem lies.. My daughter learned that day that she would never steal again and the friend and father are both in and out of prison today. She knew she should fear me more than the security. The friend feared the security more than his Dad.

The girls were so calm they've either done this before or they know the consequences are going to be minor. The biggest punishment will probably be the trespassing from the store if it's the local grocery. To do this 2 days in a row just shows how unconcerned they were.

Each woman pays for supposedly “their own” groceries so, if confronted, they have multiple receipts. With a willing/naive audience, whether an employee, manager or security, they can claim they thought the others paid for the extra items as if it was just an oversight, not theft. The other part of the ruse, the pregnant gal not feeling well during the checkout, necessitating the fanning and bending over. No one wants the responsibility of a pregnant woman, plus they can use it as another excuse for the oversight of paying for all items. This was not their first (or second) rodeo.
Lots of the kids are 'working' for people that set this up, show them how and tell them what to say. Sad.

Im homeless and trying to find a job it's so hard cause nobody contacts me back not cause of a criminal history but because I barely have experience and I'm 21 living from hotel to hotel for over 9 months now and I couldn't bring myself to steal even though I desperately need things it's definitely not worth the record and the time and the embarrassment of being arrested so idk how ppl just do this for fun n even when they have money! I have been homeless before. I would try small mom and pop shops. They don't usually do background checks. Once you get enough work history you can move on to somewhere else.

In the meantime, look into digital marketing. You don't need a degree. You have to pass the Google Ads Certification test and the Google Analytics Certification test. Both tests are free, but they're hard AF to pass.

I find it interesting that these four were more concerned with how much it will cost them to get out of jail when all of this could have been avoided by paying for what you buy. Instead they stole.
