Pregnant Housekeeper (25) Arrested After Stealing Breast Pump from Target

Around 3:52 PM on September 22, 2023, Patrolman Matthew Schou with the Eatontown Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at the Target store located at 56 State Highway 36. As he arrived on scene, he immediately made contact with someone in Asset Protection who told him that a woman wearing a denim jacket had left the store with a shopping cart after only paying for some of the items in cash while going through the self-checkout. Patrolman Schou waited for additional officers to arrive on scene, and then they walked into the TJ Maxx nearby to search for a woman matching this description. Less than 45 seconds after entering the TJ Maxx, the officers were able to locate the suspect, who was later identified as 25-year-old Maryeris Ernestina Velasquez Joya.
After they made contact with the suspect, they noticed that she was pushing a Target shopping cart inside a TJ Maxx. The officers escorted Maryeris outside of the store, and began to inventory the stolen merchandise once they were outside. Inside the shopping cart, they found an Elvie Stride Plus hospital-grade breast pump valued at $319.99. They also found her to be in possession of an additional $180 in stolen female cosmetic products, for a total value of $499.99.
Based on witness accounts from Target’s Asset Protection official as well as the surveillance footage, Maryeris was placed under arrest for shoplifting (2C:20-11B(1)). Patrolman Daniel Gilligan transported Maryeris to the Eatontown Police Department for further processing.
At the Eatontown Police Department, Maryeris was photographed and fingerprinted. She was handcuffed to the bench as the officers completed their paperwork. While she was unable to provide a social security number, she told the officers that she was from Nicaragua. When they asked about her occupation, she told them that she cleaned houses (housekeeper). Patrolman Schou released Maryeris at 5:20 PM after issuing her a summons to appear in court on November 14, 2023 for shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(1).
Records indicate that Maryeris had previously been arrested for shoplifting at the same Target store about 2 weeks earlier on September 7, 2023.

WIC gives out breast pumps to borrow while you need one, then you give it back to them when you’re done with entirely & they sanitize it & replace the parts that are replaceable for the next person who needs to use it. They gave me one to use for a few months after I had my daughter. There’s just so many other avenues I would try before resorting to stealing something, especially while so visibly pregnant.

Just realized this is her 2nd time being caught stealing from target. The 1st time (at least found on UA-cam) was just 15 days prior to this interaction. Justice system needs to crack down on ALL repeat offenders. She got greedy stealing (likely) the most expensive pump target probably sells. She shouldn't be stealing anyway but the higher the stolen goods are the worse the charges usually end up being... which usually results in harsher punishment. She thought no one would suspect a pregnant woman. And she is not new to this, she is way too calm, cool and collected.

Another time it was another drug store. I put a large size Clorox in my pulley bag to wheel it to cashier. I told the security to leave me alone just follow me to the check out. He did. Like I am so stupid if I wanted to steal I chose a huge heavy Clorox bottle.

I had no idea Target even sells higher end makeup like Benefit in store. I know they have an Ulta affiliation now and you can buy those brands thru the app, but Target stores local to me in Ohio do not carry that stuff. The most exciting brand we have that you cant find in other drugstores is Colourpop, and they rarely update the Colourpop display with anything new.
