    I get a notif, i watch right away!
    By the way the vacuum related issue is more than possible. With time, the hoses connected to the brake vacuum switch can get "crusty" and cause such symptoms. A brake booster issue is possible but not a common thing on these cars so look at this as a last resort. A big problem with time on these is a bit of oil in the throttle body flaps around the center "ring" which causes the same symptoms as you are having when the car is at operating temps. Make sure that is clean as well it is very easy and straight forward. The PCV box itself wont make such symptoms but the hoses related to that system could very well be a cause!
    Since it's not turbo, checking the intake pipe is quick and easy, make sure that there's absolutely no cracks whatsoever AFTER the MAF. Any entry of air after the MAF would cause such symptoms.
    Concerning the oil passage, it won't make idle related issue similar to vacuum symptoms but i don't know if you checked it but the "tube" like hose on the engine that we saw once you took out the pan does clog up on your gen (ONLY IF THE CAR WAS SITTING FOR A COUPLE MONTHS OR +)
    A bit far fetched but you can also check the A/C compressor clutch. Unless you are certain it is a vacuum related issue, then a bad/seizing/seized A/C compressor can lead to such symptoms when at operating temps as well but not very common.
    Keep up the beautiful videos, I couldn't believe that you were into Volvos. Your main channel was the reason why I got better equipment and started my own channel lol. Congrats on the S60R! Can't wait to see what you do with it :)

      I really appreciate the kind words and all your input on this!
      Throttle body came off and was fully cleaned when I swapped engines, but im still not ruling it out since this model has proven to be so problematic.
      I also did smoke test the entire intake system, but im not sure if this is sufficient. My AFR's look good. I would think a vacuum leak would cause more changes to the LTFT, but that could also easily be the issue still. Will look at this again.
      The AC compressor is very interesting, its definitely original and I hadn't considered that. More to look into! Thank you. :)

      Brake booster is a issue on these models. have you over 200t-miles on it it will start to leak and then you will hear a sound when your off, if you push the brake the sound will stop... Had this 2 times always around 300t-km.. standars failure. You can also clean the throttle buddy,.. If you have a magnetti throttlebody this will fail also at this mileage around... thats normal issue... A bosch will not fail, have 446.000 on my and still running...

    For me that idle issue sounds like two ways of problems:
    1. Throttle body trying to die, I think you got Magneti Marelli that are giving similar symptoms - probably electronic after it gets hot, starts to lose its own mind.
    2. VVT solenoid is dying, you can check it by, cleaning it and connecting it straight to 12V to check if it clicks.

    • @wheelemverb
      @wheelemverb  Рік тому +3

      Yea i have the Lamborghini throttle body. I ran the vida test on it multiple times and it comes back with 2% different which should be good, but I agree I dont trust that throttle body.
      I cleaned the VVT solenoid, new gasket, new VVT hub as well on the intake (exhaust is non vvt). Might have to try and manually supply power to it.

    The ETM you have is a Magnetti Marelli unit and they’re known to have issues with the tps sensor. Xemodex does a send in repair and warranties for life. It’s expensive but that could be your fix. My guess is it’s trying to account for the change in vacuum and the plate is sticking or wrong value being recorded.
    Brake booster ejector, switch and the lines can develop leaks, or even the booster itself. Smoke test the vacuum system if you’re sure that’s the issue.

    OMG, Willem. I'm glad you can have such a positive approach to this thing, it would give me nightmares. I had a Volvo 240 wagon, something like an '82, and it didn't have diagnostics like yours does. At some point I ran out of luck on an issue that was severe, hired the best mechanic I could find, and he found a wire shorting to the car frame inside of some long hollow channel someplace. Similar nightmares decades later with a BMW Z3 convertible. At my age, it's Hondas, Toyota trucks, or Mazdas for me if I ever buy another used car that's not an EV. Cheers! I love this series! ✌

    One easy thing to check is the evap solenoid under the intake manifold. Take it of and see if you can make it click with a 9-volt battery.

    Make a home made smoke machine out of a jar, soldering iron, and a sock. It's the best tool I've ever made and used on my volvos as the turbo ones can have a lot of vacuum lines.
    I did have the issues you are describing once before in an S80 I had. Somehow some time a workshop had done some work on the exhaust and put the o2 sensors back in the wrong order so when it was hot and idling at traffic lights it would do the same as yours. But that was on a 4 o2 sensor configuration, yours would be a lot harder to wrongly put back together as there are only 2.
    Good luck, finding vacuum leaks is very easy with a little smoke machine.

    On the idle issue. You bought this with a blown engine- I'm guessing it's 2.5 with the thin walls. Eurojulien did a great video on why they blow and he mentioned clogged fuel line/fuel filter. Has that been changed on this one since you've had it? You may have swapped out the engine- but if the problem was back at the filter- the issue that caused the engine to blow in the first place could still be there.

    This is uncanny. I recently picked up an 01 v70 2.4 n/a with the m56 5speed. I got it for the same reasons you did: I wanted a more reliable version of the P2 platform. No turbo,no awd, no sunroof - none of the things that usually kill them. I’ve been slowly picking away at the same issues you are. I diy replaced the PCV, installed BC coilovers, currently doing an R brake swap, timing belt, resealed the motor, tons of little stuff. But I’m chasing this erratic idle. Same exact symptoms as yours. I’m missing the clutch position sensor (and the wires were jumped same as yours). My assumption is that it is a vacuum leak somewhere but haven’t quite found it. I hope it is not PCV related because that was a pain. I’m looking forward to see if you solve it and will let you know if I do as well. Till then- I’m going to level out the idle with my foot on the pedal. Cheers and great stuff.

I did a few operations at once so it’s hard to pinpoint: removed my evap purge valve and cycled it a few times with a 9v battery- I think it was stuck open. Cleaned and lubed the preheater-valve in the air box. Mine was completely stuck, and my throttle body was clean, but I put a touch of oil on the pivots and cycled it by hand a bunch. Fantastic video. I am still chasing an occasional erratic idle on my 2004 S80 2.5T five years after it started. The dealer and a Volvo specialist said different things (clean throttle body)(bad plugs) neither helped. Then they said fuel system (pump) (followed by fuel pressure sensor) and then they gave up. I ended up trying an ambient air temperature sensor (which improved my fuel mileage tremendously) but I will still get the occasional idle drop or slight race before things return to normal (the dealer also did the PCV). It's annoying, but I've come to accept it as "Volvo life". I'm excited about the S60R content. I have a V70R and would appreciate hearing your thoughts on the R. Good luck with the idle issue.

    • @brettkirkpatrick464
      @brettkirkpatrick464 Рік тому +3

      @@wheelemverb I learned that the P2 Volvos have two ambient air temperature sensors. They are both located in the exterior rear view mirrors. If you feel under the mirror, there will be a small blister with a tiny hole next to it. That's the ambient air temperature sensor. Weird right? According to the forum posts, the sensor in the drivers side mirror helps to set the primary fuel mixture in the ECU at start up, and can cause the car to run poorly or in a "safe" mode from a fueling strategy standpoint. This sensor has a range of operation that can trick the ECU into thinking it is either way hotter or colder than it really is. My car had a bad sensor for 7 years and never set a check engine code. I got 23 mpg and assumed it was normal for the car (2.5T, FWD 3500 lb car). I finally got a check engine light last summer because the sensor completely shorted out. After replacing the sensor I got no less than 27 mpg on the highway with a max mpg of 32. According to the forum posts, the ambient temp sensor in the passenger mirror works the same way and feeds the temp display in the dash. Both sensors are inexpensive (less than $50) and when I spoke with the Volvo dealer parts guy, he said the sensors die on a regular basis and you know if it's been changed because the black plastic cover for the mirror bolts on the door panel has broken retainers. I hope this helps!

Only 163bhp but still really fast, beginning to wonder if it's been remapped when I bought it as it seems to drive a bit quicker than I thought. I'm in England, there's still a lot of these Volvos still about in petrol and diesel, I would say 50/50. It's the same with the S60 too, lots to choose from. I've had the S60 and S80 before I bought the V70, the V70 seems to be the fastest one out of the 3. But they are all great cars. The V70 and the S60 were used for many years by the UK Police, I remember getting stopped by a couple of these about 20 year's ago, had to sit in the back while getting questioned lol. Do you have a hard breakpedal when the car is not running? Maybe then you have a small leak in the breakbooster where the engine sucks air from and have some trouble with running.
    I have that problem now with my v70. I thought it was the one way valve that should keep some vacuum in the booster while the engine is not running so you got a boosted brake pedal when you start the car the next time. I changed it but my brake pedal is still hard when I start the car later after I did get out of the car. That means there is leaking vacuum somewhere and very likely it is the booster I think. I did not replace it yet but it is in my to do list.

    How much is the coil over conversion? I have an S60T and the suspension is making all sorts of dreadful noises. I have replaced bushes and control arms - so springs and shockers seem to be past their use by date. Mine is a low kilometre example -I have just ticked over 115K's. It was a one owner car. But -they did not maintain certain items like suspension.

      @@wheelemverb Very frustrating to troubleshoot because the engine control does not trap the errant feedback position condition and generate a code. Volvo must have assumed it will never happen. Not a good assumption. The variable resistor element that is part of the throttle assembly wears out and is unable to provide a position feedback signal. The throttle position cannot be controlled precisely without feedback. Which is why the idle is whacked, and why the vacuum wanders, because the throttle position is wandering. Makes perfect sense when you replace the unit. Oh, that's how it is supposed to work. New/rebuilt units use a "contactless" position feedback, so that particular failure should never happen again.

    I have the same issue on my my2007 v70. It has the modern throttle body on it.
    I noticed the same thing, when using the brake, the idle drops. Mine did 414000 km, I tried to fix the issue at 300k. I tried the MAF, Vacuüm lines, clean the sensors and throttle body. I thought, maybe it is the brake booster, but this is not easy to replace, so I wanted to be sure. Eventually I gave up because I got used to it.

I mean it's a touring for christ sake,like u said it's not gonna be fast N/A(which no not fast but could be quick and fun)and u certainly won't be doin canyon runs,so make it a slick lil,luxury cruiser. 15-20yrs from now when ur still COMFORTABLY enjoying ur volvo ull have other cars with MUCH MORE aftermarket support to make fast.
