  • This is the very first time I've gotten my hands on good quality 3D printed miniatures and attempted to paint one. In this video I'll be painting a Nothic miniature, from the Lost Adventures Kickstarter:

    So if this was a $300 printer just rewind your mind to the 90s when you spent that much on a dot matrix and the same again a decade later on an inkjet. I would say $300 is pretty inexpensive given the quality.

      I don't have a reference point, but given the versatility of a 3d printer, 300 bucks really isn't expensive.

    Just to say, 3d printing is how major companies make many things, too. Most manufacturers of objects, from jewelry to medical equipment, use 3d modeling in the design phase. You can 3d print a prototype, and then create cheaper copies through casting. But it's not as if the shape will gain detail after the print.

  • @hacker0110
    @hacker0110 4 роки тому

    Bringing up tiny failures on the models is irrelevant at this point. Here is why:
    As a low cost DM, my options are:
    -Whatever I can make (I'm not handy)
    -3D printed stuff
    -Nothing.
    I can't afford to get all the stuff from Reaper or anything else really. I've seen tables, where they play with paper tokens, monopoly tokens or just about anything that is available.
    Half of my minis dont have hands, because the support failed and I couldnt print enough minis before the session. I printed a headless horse, because the nozzle clogged up. Guess which mini was the party's favourite? The fricking headless horse.
    3D printing makes tabletop games accessible to us, who don't make enough money to buy copyright stuff.
    Also, for the price of one dragon model, I can print an entire dungeon, including the damn dragon.

  • @DanielLeivaCardozo

    Those are resin prints which gives them so much detail without the layer lines. But you'll be surprised what the more popular FDM printers can achieve as well with the right settings, you guys can take a look at the settings and the miniatures from Fat Dragon Games, I can't quite remember the UA-cam channel name, their minis are gorgeous and using their settings you'll get amazing results, it was night and day to me after watching their videos and printing some of their minis.

    So, based on how I've seen it perform, I'm pretty sure Water + is just distilled water with some flow improver added, or at least that would be my guess based on the evidence.
    I remember having a talk about three years ago or so with a friend about 3d printing and specifically miniatures and honestly I still feel like its not a viable solution for any sort of mass production. As something someone can do in small batches, perhaps to fill out an army roster or as a means of having minis for something like tabletop gaming I feel like the technology has reached the point where its more accessible from a price perspective; certainly the idea of a Kickstarter based solely on 3d printed miniatures is something that's become a lot more commonplace now and that can only be a good thing in any sort of free market because competition, even on a small scale, is good. I know that, if I had the money, I'd love to invest in either a resin or plastic printer and try my hand at creating some original miniatures and as something more affordable and approachable I've often times toyed with the idea (and will probably follow through some day soon) of getting a custom made miniature from Hero Forge; they're premium plastic option yields some very good quality miniatures (I've actually held a few and seen them first hand) and playing around with all of their design options is a fun way to spend some free time.

      High end 3d Resin printers are used all over the miniature industry, including GW. Every GW model we have currently has a phase when it was 3D printed. This is especially true of any model created on a computer. But yes, most companies are using 3D printing as part of their process. The end result is either resin casting or making of injection mold for mass production.

    • @TheMiniJunkie
      @TheMiniJunkie  4 роки тому

      Pretty similar, actually - the challenge with Nolzur's is the darn mold lines that tend to go through important details. 3D prints have no mold lines, and pre-supported ones these days even reduce support marks to near zero.

    Really like the way you used the direction of the painting while layering the skin to match the way the bands of muscle would go. Really makes it look realistic (funny on a horned cyclops looking thing but hey it is what it is.) Wish there was an option on the kickstarter to get already printed minis as opposed to just the files. I feel many people are of the same belief you were about the minis and having one in hand shatters that doubt.

    I don't think 3D printing is going to replace casting for commercially produced miniatures as it is much cheaper to cast large quantities rather than 3D print them. But it is very likely that 3D printing will be the go to method for making masters.

    Been saying for awhile now, Reaper and those other companies need to get on the train, and offer STL's of their minis so people can print them at home. Their about to lose their bread and butter. 3D printing is eating their lunch. I can get a tray of professional quality miniatures in 6-8 hrs that cost me cents to print, and I get EXACTLY what I want. If it doesn't exist, I sculpt it. Haven't bought minis in years.
