Drybrushing is pretty tricky on FDM prints, has to be done carefully. But not always - sometimes the layer lines can be used to simulate a texture of fabric or even fine chainmail.
@@michaeltroll8429 Basically it's starting dark, and adding successively lighter shades in successively smaller areas to build up the color. Thinning the paint a little, and using brush strokes inward towards the center of the area, helps smooth out the borders between each shade.
Layering can replace washes as well. I find that FDM prints just drink up the wash without accomplishing anything, because they're so porous. Washes also have a bad habit of picking out the very layer lines that you're trying to hide.
It is more about FDM vs Resin talk than about Pro painting tips, but hey, maybe next video ? I would love to hear more from both of you guys, keep up the good work !
Nice! Catan is one of those games that can get so much love from printing. Especially having such a vibrant community and soooo many free prints online. Cheers man! Enjoy!
Great mix in format, love a good long-take. Having extensive experience in automotive painting, one real issue is what’s known in the trade as chemical-pop. It’s where paint repels in contaminated areas. Chemical pop can happen from silicons, oils and moisture. Cleanliness is Godliness 😂🤜🏼🤛🏼🇦🇺😎🤓
Hey Danny, would you consider doing a video on making silicone molds and then casting 3d printed terrain tiles? I've been printing a ton of Dragon Lock terrain tiles and would love to switch to resin casting but couldn't find any good videos on the topic. I think it would make for a pretty cool video too!

Hi, a bit out of scope, is it possible to print something like that? www.dropbox.com/s/rfnw5jrf0q9nmfv/image_1c.jpg?dl=0 If yes, how difficult or expensive would it be?
having messed around with it I'd suggest priming if your going to try and do something resembling an enamel pin thing. Priming in general though seems like it will aid in paint adhesion 100% Also keep tooth picks and q-tips nearby.
By far the best tip I've come across is to layer primer, Krylon CoverMax satin, and primer again (Tip found here: ua-cam.com/video/I2mtVPplfu8/v-deo.html ) This combined with your miniature print profile has gotten me the best results.
I find that with PLA prints, those first few layers are vital. The paint itself has to BE detail, adding extra paint to blend layer lines where needed, letting paint dry, being patient as hell. It's satisfying though to end up with something that doesn't even look 3D printed, never mind PLA. I tend to sand a lot, and use cataloy knifing putty - its thick and fills layer lines nicely then is smooth as silk when sanded. Patience with those first layers means that shade washes work great, dry brushing works great, and you end up with something that can sit beside anything on your shelf.
LEGENDARY James Wappel Hobby Lobby Paint Brush: Great video! I would love to try this brush out but I haven't been able to locate it yet. Has anyone been able to find it yet? Does anyone have a link for it or the Hobby Lobby SKU/Part No?
I know this is a year later but I might have found the brush. SKU: 238295. It's branded "tree house studio" but its green, there's no branding on the brush itself, and there's a review that mentions that its good for contrast painting on miniatures. www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Stencils-Craft-Paints/Brushes-Tools/Round-Paint-Brushes---12-Piece-Set/p/425
Great video ,shame the camera switched off but what you captured was invaluable for use newbies . I have considered a air brush for a while ( so many larger terrain prints i thought it would be much quicker to paint) so hearing some positives has convinced me to give it a try ( with a cheap air brush to start and learn )
Chris is a nice guy I have been following his page for a number of months now. His page is also filled full of lots of useful information, would recommend checking it out for sure.
I didn't get the one but of info I came here for. What kind of paint is recommended. The local comic shop has all these paints for minis but they're $4-7 per bottle while I see bigger bottles of acrylic at Michael's for like 80 cents.
There are a lot of videos on this topic, Phil - it's both complicated and simple at the same time. The miniature paints at hobby stores usually have better coverage/pigment density, but hobby paints can work too. A great painter can work with whatever they have. If you're looking for a good brand to start with, I recommend Vallejo Game Color Starter. Good luck!
Hay dude, love the channel ☺ I don't have a printer but still wtch all your videos ☺ as an idea for a video series or viewers interaction segment on your channel. Why don't you get people to send in their 28mm characters by drawing / SDL files etc, have people vote or pick a theme or whatever way you'd like to host it ☺. Set up your cameras with music playing over the top and either live broadcast the figure being printed or pre record the figure being printed. It might sound mad but people would watch a 2hour live stream maybe chatting with you but watching the printer doing it's thing. Might be an extra way to bring up your viewing hour's just do it once a month at the end of an interactive campaign. Maybe send the figure to the prison who designed it or to some one who interacts with you through the process. Sorry for the rant, just taught that might be something that would help your channel grow ☺
I'm starting to paint printed minis and this video is a treasure! BTW, what is the mini you guys are painting right now? Is it available for free in online resources, or it is a paid download?
I haven't tried it, but know a few folks in the community who have - and the results haven't been very good for minis. If it's useful, I'd assume it'd be with terrain, but haven't given it a shot yet!
If you're an old fart like me or otherwise need to use a magnifying glass or the visor don't mind the layer lines. They show up as big as trees under the glass but after a layer of paint or two they don't under the naked eye. Also use your polyacrylic trick after priming. Layer. Layer. Layer. 4 thin layers beat 1 thick messy layer all the time.
I tried contrast paints on some minis recently, thought I'd share a photo of two of them, my print quality is rubbish as I don't really spend a lot of time learning 3d printing and painting as I should to get good at it but thought people here might be interrested in what an absolute novice at 3d prints and painting is being able to do in just spare time when they are really busy ibb.co/D7Mq0kd ibb.co/DWk8Y08 Edit* I should mention this are MZ4250 models from thingiverse and he's a photo at a "normal" tabletop distance when playing something like D&D ibb.co/Zh4sWzb
Anybody have a lead on those brushes he talks about at 5:40? I've googled around and everybody just says James Wappel gets cheapo brushes at Hobby Lobby, nobody actually links them or names them.
Not necessarily, I just bought an ender 3 pro that comes with 2kg worth of plastic for £155. Now I’m not saying that’s not a lot of money but when you compare it to the price for a box of minis or a terrain kit it should pay for itself pretty quickly
I say paint softly. Be genital remember the mini design for 3d printers are not there yet. They will snap and can have too many easy to break points. Also try to paint a story. A well blended white robe may not be as interesting to look at than a whote robe with fade blood patches and mud. The best tip I can give you is perfections is found in your mistake.

I've been advocating layering as a technique on FDM prints (as opposed to drybrushing) for a year now - good to hear a pro agree with me. :D
You've been ahead of the curve on a lot of things my friend :)

GOLD! packed knowledge for all of us!! Great video! We need more "guests" like this!
If I could have infinite funds I'd fly out and bring 'em all on! :D Glad you liked it, Lazaro!
Thank you for this! Clearest information on the topic I've seen anywhere so far.
re-watching this 2 months later because I finally got the courage to print my minis!
Hello, what kind of paint do you use?
Wow this video is a gem. So much great info. Every 3d printer enthusiast should watch.
Thanks for the share man! Feel free to share wherever you think folks would appreciate it :)

Do you have to thin the primer before using it for an airbrush? Or just with the brush?
Hell yes! Love me some chris spotts!. He is such a nice guy and is always willing to help!
Awesome video, just got a ender3 and learning how to paint these minis, also using your cura siepie profile.
Cheers my friend! Happy printing & happy painting!

I'd be curious to see the slap chop painting method done on fdm prints.

Does drybrushing on a resin print makes the izohips like surface on top (or sides depends how you angled the print) make more noticable/worse?
