I've said it before and I'll say it again: whoever decided that we should no longer be allowed to pet our Pokemon as of gen eight should have been sacked on the spot.
It might because petting doesn't translate that well in docked mode with the Switch. Even though the Switch does have a touch screen. Like you can pet your partner in LGPE, which is kind of nice in handheld mode. But kind of feels awkward having to use the Joycon with motion controls. It probably would have been even weirder having to use a pro controller to pet, so they just axed it
@@ellasorellabrella there was also an npc who said something about "hearing a singing voice on the wind" iirc, so at the very least they vaguely hinted at it at some points
I loved Refresh! It was so funny to be in the middle of big story stuff and stopping to be like "Ah my Primarina's hair got messed up 😢let me brush him before we continue" and also it made full heals and the specific status heals only useful if you were really struggling in a battle, because you could heal them for free after the battle!
I am currently replaying through Pokemon Diamond, and I forgot that status moves are present out of battle. It was just a non-issue through my Ultra Sun and Legends Arceus playthroughs.
realistically the affection system was doomed to be absorbed by the friendship system or viceversa, in their soul they were essentially the same thing a way to indicate how close you were with your pokemon. In a way you can see that they went the whole way of streamlining the idea they had from a very detached system in gen 6, to a more ingrained one in gen 7, till they merged to the other system they had already entirely.
When your "complicated things in pokemon" series is up to date, i'd love to see a "questionable gamedev decision in pokemon" series. There's so much to talk about :eyes:
I CAME HERE TO HAVE A GOOD TIME AND LISTEN TO RANDOM POKÉMON NONSENSE AND THEN ALMOST 3 MINUTES INTO THE VIDEO YOU HIT ME WITH THAT OLD MAN’S LETTER. ;-;
Regarding Bean Bottles, I recently replayed USUM without doing any multiplayer or online features, but still sent out a few Bean Bottles and regularly receive them on my Poké Pelago. So there’s slightly more to it than it just being with players you’ve interacted with (but is likely just the game sending pity bottles to solo players).
YES DUDE, GOD I FEEL SO VINDICATED KNOWING THAT RAINBOW BEANS ARE 125 AND PATTERNED BEANS ARE 5. EXPERIMENTATION PAYS OFF ONCE AGAIN also thank you SO much again for the intel about USUM photo mode increasing affection, and also FINALLY EXPLAINING THE FLAVORED MALASADAS. those have been haunting me since LAUNCH
There's one important thing about the wild Pokemon in Pelago and why you should check them all the time: _they can be shiny._ Now granted it's not any better than full odds shiny hunting and they can still go away (which would be heart breaking) but I think the possibility alone would be enough reason for some to check up on them.
I wonder if the high five mechanic is just one person's special thing and they were allowed to do as few and as many Pokemon as they wanted. Other than Pikachu, Eveelutions, and the starters it's just their favorite Pokemon. Edit: Man the fandom really did just make its own Pokemon Stars (since theres already an overall HD SM/USUM mod)
Pansage getting the high five feature while Pansear and Panpour git excluded makes sense when you factor in that Cilan was on the main cast of the anime and had it as his main pokemon. Pignite was also the only Unova Starter Ash evolved, and Emolga was owned by Iris, which explains why they got added timeline wise. So basically, blame the BW anime for those three, since this feature was being developed while that was airing.
I thought the coolest thing with refresh was when I was petting my garbodor and the hand got sticky. It was such amazing attention to detail, and it's crazy how much effort they put into the cooking/playing mechanics.
Pokémon Refresh and the islands were one of many reasons why Sun and Moon are my favourite Pokémon games to this day. I felt so immersed, just travelling these beautiful islands and caring for my buddies.
Weird trivia point: Like whole regions in Pokemon, Isle Abeens is based on a real-world location, namely Australia. This can be seen from beta footage that includes the isle's full long name, Isle Islippedonm Abeens.
Thank you for having me as a guest voice! For anyone curious, I was given the lines with no context for how they'd be used, and I was very tickled to see how they'd fit into the video. Excellent job as always, sweetums!
I really hope there's a scarlet violet sandwich video at some point. I'm really curious how people keep making different herbaless 4* recipes for the group BP mission or why these specific combinations + 2 herba of any type gives you lvl 3 sparkling, title, encounter
i'm open to corrections but what i know of the second basically the 1 cucumber + 1 pickle + 3 basic ingredient + 2 herba mystica sparkling/encounter/title works like this: i'm pretty sure you need 5 topping servings at least for the sandwich to be a high enough level, and cucumber and pickle are the smallest and easiest to place w/o falling risk or changing the sandwiches characteristics, and the basic ingredients are each tied to a specific type (ie tofu for normal, onion for psychic) and you need at least 3 for these lv 3 powers. you can generally use any herba mystica EXCEPT 1 sour and 1 sweet (results in catching power rather than encounter power), same with x2 sour if youre making a normal/ice/bug/ghost/dragon/fairy sandwich and x2 sweet if youre making a normal/water/bug/fighting/dragon/fairy sandwich. none of the other herbs seem to have a special exception like this, it's the only one i've seen consistently mentioned.
Gonna love the part where you go back in time to bring the old man back to life but you know doing the pokemon league will kill him and you still do it anyways
Your entire tangent about the flipped sprites shows how much effort goes into all of these side modes. Pokemon XY released with ALL 721 fully animated pokemon, with attack animations, battle stances and lots of animations and attention to detail in Amie. With the Synchro Machine in the Indigo Disk showing how far they've come in terms of iterating those old ideas, I'm excited to see the next side mode with incredulous amount of depth and effort put into it.
however just the mention of a tree or the ground texture will be enough for ppl to just ignore all of that. Luckily Indigo disk will be able to divert attention by having Blastoise being fixed for the time being
Pokebeans look like they'd taste like some kind of candy, honestly. They probably wouldn't (apparently people can make coffee with them? Which is strange) but they look very candy-like anyhow. On another topic, here's to Johto! I've never been one for sports, but I have always liked this set of minigames.
Well, they probably taste like Japanese sweet red bean, which has the kinda texture of a black bean, but I'd say is somewhere between chocolate and vanilla in flavor. If you haven't tried it before, you should! You can get ice cream with beans in them. Its actually a good texture!
hi i have been playing gen 7 (ultra moon) again for some reason two additions that are basically fun facts: - re. malasadas 23:07: even pokemon who cannot eat pokebeans can eat (flavored) malasadas, Ill see & update if this counts towards fullness after evolving later (i just fed one to my metapod) Edit: Just evolved metapod, indeed still very full! - re. unique -aplenny- *abeens encounters (36:58): mr. mime & (presumably) baby jinx are not SOS battle, they're standard encounters :3 (found one randomly right before watching this video actually lol) gonna come back and edit this comment probably 👍
It is worth noting that you can find shinies via Isle Abeens. I had no idea until I replayed Gen VII a year ago and wound up with one. As far as I'm aware, it uses the standard shiny odds, so I wouldn't recommend it for shiny hunting unless you're genuinely deranged.
do you think lusamine and bean island guy just got quietly divorced and she took it real rough so she told the kids he disappeared. like he knows what happened hes just chilling and doesn't want anybody to bother him. including his kids. giovanni strat
According to lore outside the game, I don't totally remember if it was a manga or interview, but. Lusamine's husband got eaten by an Ultra Wormhole and just vanished as far as she knew. He got amnesia and kind of just ended up at the Poke Pelago islands later.
Inside me are two wolves: One is very insistent that losing Mohn via Ultra Beast wormhole is core to Lusamine's character and this headcanon is completely incompatible with the characters' backstories. The other finds this headcanon really funny. Local man fed up with family life, returns to beans.
Yup, I knew the rainbow bean was coming up eventually. It will spawn in with relative rarity but it’s not like you won’t get a couple every day if you’re regularly checking the Pokepelego. It completely destroys any form of normal progression for affection for better or worse.
when i clicked on a video about complicated things in pokemon 5 hours ago, i did NOT expect it would lead to watching a 1+h long video about poké beans. I am certainly not complaining, really good content!
Pokemon Refresh was my favorite version of any of the games’ “interact with your Pokemon feature”. I like how it actually takes place on the route you are in (rather than some rainbow-colored void like in gen 6), and I prefer it to camp/picnics because you can pet and feed the Pokemon directly
I cannot believe you went through allll the effort of replacing sprites, TWICE, AND MANUALLY MIRRORING EACH ONE, for a silly “little” video on Pokémon refresh It is absolutely amazing though
Giving the ending animation after he mentions the next video, I assume what we're getting next is Aprijuice for the Pokéathlon. I was hoping to see it!
Most surprising thing from this video so far is that malasadas are cinnamon-sugar donuts. I thought they were like meat filled pastries from how the big malasada icon looked in-game. Suddenly I agree with Hau I would eat those by the dozen.
When I first saw your Poképlago, I thought something was off but wasn't entirely sure of myself. Then seeing Mawile & Hoopa Unbound using the original sprites made me realize before your explanation. Thank you, Linneus for probably forgetting about those two.

Do you know of the alternate sleep animation for Pokémon you can high five? It might not correlate directly with the list but when a Pokémon has max affection (maybe above 4 hearts or so I forget), it had a chance to be asleep when you open amie/refresh, certain Pokémon have an alternate sleep animation and wake up more slowly.
I learned quite a bit about the differences between Refresh and Amie in this video but I learned a lot more about the unique sprites they made for Poké Pelago. Thank you for that
Pokebeans fill that niche of things that, even if they weren't food, people would probably still try to put in their mouths. That's a 10/10 in my books.
Funnily enough, they’re just about the only Pokemon food I haven’t had any major craving for because I know full well that their texture is the same as a real bean, and I’m not huge on the texture of beans- and I’d imagine their flavors are all tainted by a bean-y flavors regardless of what other flavor they may have.
Dude, japanese sweet red beans are real, are yummy, and are not that hard to get in ice cream and in pastry fillings. They're kinda between chocolate and vanilla, but with the texture of a black bean. You gotta try them!
The pokemon pelago distribution reeks of pokepelago being intended at some point to be available from the beginning, similar to the subscreen menus (training et al) of Gen6 I would imagine.
You're truly insane for making all the mirrored sprites and I love your commitment to it. This got me to sub, I cant wait to check out the rest of your vids!
randomly hearing Eiffel65 was so jarring. the first video I can remember watching on UA-cam was actually a Blue AMV focusing on Piplup so it's fun to see someone else associate the song w/ Pokémon
I did in fact feed as many Pokemon in Sun/Moon's Refresh as I could hack into the game on an emulator in order to see all the animations. (When I want to figure out my favorite Pokemon, I'm gonna look at everything available.) I don't remember much of the details but I think I wrote down somewhere which animations would make cute gifs.
I was nodding along for the entire section on Sun and Moon's pokemon amie successor. Sun (not Ultra, because I wanted to re experience the original story) has been my before bed game for the last couple months and I've been getting a kick out of the seamless integration of the system. It really feels like you're caring for your mons after battle and it's surprisingly immersive. BUT, also like you say, the rainbow pokepuff ruins it completely. I gave my favorite member two of them and the difference was insane. At 1 or 2, heck, even 3 hhearts, you'll get the occasional save in battle, plus those small nods like them looking back at you or being nervous, stuff like that. But at 5 hearts? It feels like I'm playing BDSP all over again, because it happens so often. As a gradual thing, it's fine and feels natural, but for how little effort a rainbow thingy takes, it completely breaks the system. Overall, I really like the pelagos. While watching the video, I realized that it's basically a version of what the digimon RPGs (the turnbased ones) have been trying to do for a long while, pretty much since Digimon World DS. They also always have a little idle game (usually called farm) for the digimon you're not using, but the pelago in Pokemon blows all of it away in a heartbeat. The Cybersleuth games were the first ones where Digimon managed to make it impactful enough to not ignore and those were Vita games originally. EDIT: Also major props for the flipped sprites. You're insane. (and Gamefreak is too)
i like that you left in a clip of the emulator glitch with refresh where the hand effects fuck up....was funny seeing cubchoo electrocute the little hand
This is such an interesting watch, especially as someone who is/was a big fan of pokemon amie and refresh!! A lot of these things I knew but there's also some that I had no idea! Thanks for sharing this!
Bean Bottles are actually useful to send out, since you'll usually get multiple bean bottles back. So you essentially spend 7 to minimum go even, and i usually get +7 or 14 on my investment (so 2-3 bottles) with maxed out islands. Each island can hold 1 bottle, but multiple islands can have a bottle. I hope i got this across
i think its really funny that the clear intent of refresh was for more people to use it because i actually used it wayyyyyy less than amie 😭 i liked the minigames and how they let me interact with my pokemon over a long period of time without losing points or having to exit and lose fullness by playing the rest of the game, so refresh limiting that and forcing you to go slow and steady made me quickly just drop it entirely unless i was using it to cure status conditions
yeah I only used Refresh to feed them rainbow beans and cure their statuses until my stockpile of Lum Berries were amassed from Poke Pelago. At least the minigames in XY had me feel like I was playing with my pokemon.
I know I used Amie way more since I liked to play the mini games. Meanwhile, I just stopped using Refresh when I reached full hearts. It stings more that Amie and Refresh could have combined to create the ultimate friendship area, but it was completely dropped for Sw/Sh camping and S/V picnics.

I reminded that the main villains husband got teleported to a wormhole world, where they are in charge of taking of your pokemon. And doing stuff like finding you beans and hatching eggs. And the dude doesn't want leave it, or tell his family he's alive thought you! xD
I'm eight months late but have to say poke pelago is single-handedly the MOST frustrating part about a USUM professor's oak challenge and it's not even close. It took me literal months to get all of the fossils plus evolution stones plus misdreavus, who's the sole pokemon that shows up on the island before it appears in game anywhere. But uhhhh on the plus side, I now know far far more about the island mechanics than I ever would've otherwise wanted to.
I would love a video about the hg/ss pokeathlon area and the stats for that feature. Idk, it might have some less "meat" on it but it would be iteresting to see if theres any special mechanics for that and for the juice blender thing you used in that game

They should have just thrown out affection if we can't have both seperately.
I yearn for the day when Gamefreak learns to think about the future when brainstorming new gameplay ideas.

I think that's the original idea. But this is actually what it is now. Since the servers shut down, 3ds players are now doomed to be lonely.

Edit: Man the fandom really did just make its own Pokemon Stars (since theres already an overall HD SM/USUM mod)
what is the mod called
Pansage getting the high five feature while Pansear and Panpour git excluded makes sense when you factor in that Cilan was on the main cast of the anime and had it as his main pokemon. Pignite was also the only Unova Starter Ash evolved, and Emolga was owned by Iris, which explains why they got added timeline wise.
So basically, blame the BW anime for those three, since this feature was being developed while that was airing.
But... theyre the same animation. Its take 5 seconds to enable it.

I thought the coolest thing with refresh was when I was petting my garbodor and the hand got sticky.
It was such amazing attention to detail, and it's crazy how much effort they put into the cooking/playing mechanics.

It is worth noting that you can find shinies via Isle Abeens. I had no idea until I replayed Gen VII a year ago and wound up with one. As far as I'm aware, it uses the standard shiny odds, so I wouldn't recommend it for shiny hunting unless you're genuinely deranged.
I got a shiny Kadabra. It went away, I changed clock time and it still went away. I changed to my cousin's 3ds and it finally stayed.
I think all shiny hunters have to be a bit deranged. There are some people who hunt in the Pokemon Safari for fun after all...

It's probably partially because Moon was my first Pokemon game, but I miss Poke Beans.
They look so tasty... Like jelly beans but better.
I bet they are just naturally occurring jellybeans
Dude, japanese sweet red beans are real, are yummy, and are not that hard to get in ice cream and in pastry fillings. They're kinda between chocolate and vanilla, but with the texture of a black bean.

I;m thinking about thos Beans
(and Gamefreak is too)
Poké Beans Poké Beans the magical fruit, the more you eat the more you toot.
