The "seal of rightiousness" icon comes from warcraft 3, where the Mountain King hero unit had and ability called "Stormbolt" with that exact icon. Fun fact the lightning storm icon has existed since the days of reign of chaos and it wasn't used in there either it was going to be a far seer ability but was later scrapped
Also note that the icon for Holy Ward was reused for warlock's Ritual of Doom. Which requires a party of 5 players and randomly kills one to summon a doomguard. Which imo is much cooler than the retail version where you cast Curse of Doom and when it expires there is a tiny chance to summon one. Remember when thrall threw his hammer at mannoroth in that one cinematic where grom kills mannoroth? I think that's what they were were trying to do with thunderbolt for shamans.
For number 2 a similar ability to what shamanes had was added in legion as well as aspect of the turtle. it is basically the same thing but the time is reduced to 8 seconds
People need to understand that even if they had put Holy/Crusader Strike into the game, ret paladins would have still been bad because of itemization. All their abilities scale off holy/spell damage and until AQ40/Naxx there are next to no items for them. That and the fact that spamming those 2 abilities would oom them just like a boomkin.
Probably, but consider that they were already working on the Seal system, so a Paladin could Judge with Seal of Wisdom to get mana back while attacking. It would have also gave them spammable attacks to gain Agro if they were tanking. Also, while going oom on raids is bad, it beats doing nothing but autoattack most of the time then casting two damage abilities, then go back to autoattacking.
MrZurata: Its matter of simple balance. It would only need to prolong the paladin buffs so they doesnt have to spam them during fights. As well as not consume the active seal when you use jugment. Then with these abilities beside the Seal system, it would actualy be playable and fun class. It wouldnt be top DPS but it would be playable.
You must be joking. Tier 2 is all spell damage gear which is available way before AQ, and no, not all paladin abilities scale off of holy/spell damage, either. SoC scales off of weapon damage, and so would have Crusader Strike.
@@uni4rm I would like to see on a vanilla private server with said abilities restored if Pallys are viable dps. Would be an interesting experiment. Or if Blizzard decides to make a "vanilla+" with scrapped content restored and finished (like Azshara Crater), then have those abilities back.
When you show Invisibility Totem there's another totem called agitating totem, was it just an early version of Stoneclaw Totem or something different? Also, i remember using wayback machine to look up very early versions of allakhazam (which people used before thottbot, which was before wowhead) and it showed a hunter ability called glimpse of instincts or something like that, and another ability called lend pet, this might be material for another video.
Wonder of group astral recall was also meant to work on the whole raid too, and as a whole it's no mystery why it was removed, because it's a massive troll ability!! Kind of like how mages can troll with the portals but on a bigger scale! Scenario 1: Get all 40 people to the raid then enter. Funny shaman casts a sneaky group astral recall. Scenario 2: A shaman can effectively hold the whole group as hostage like " Give me the that item, or i teleport everyone home" Kicking the shaman doesn't work, because the ability would have been bugged and still teleport everyone back!!
Its funny that you think trip may be a rogue ability but you are not sure, if you take a look at 3:04 of this video you can clearly see the spellbook of a rogue with rogue abilities in it like kidney shot, rupture, garrote, feint, and trip.. i think its fair to assume with those evidence that it is indeed a rogue ability.
I'm not buying that reason for removing all those damage spells for paladins. If you look at the list of abilities under Ret on Classic it's so painfully obvious they simply gutted it because they either couldn't think of a way or run out of time to balance it. Even with something like a 12 second cooldown Crusader Strike would have helped hugely in making Ret actually half decent to play, and just put it at the bottom of the Ret tree instead of that crappy Repentance.
Paladin just didn't have the gear to DPS, even if the abilities were there. It all scaled with Spell power/Holy damage, and there's no gear for it really.
@@Bladius_ What? A spammable ability is exactly what warriors and rogues have and paladins lack. Paladins have access to tons of gear, being a plate class. Not sure what you are thinking.
@@uni4rm Gear with the correct stats, obviously. The only deccent Plate with the correct stats is from... Naxx? Maybe. Point is, rogue either have high base numbers or scale with weapon damage and warriors scale with pure damage too. Paladins don't, or at least not well enough.
It's actually not at odd at all that an icon would be shared by many different abilities and have a name of an ability that doesn't exist anymore. As a programmer, you need to keep en eye on memory usage and code maintainability. So you'd reuse the same icon at every opportunity to save space. Once you've named that asset , and used it in your code, you don't want to go around changing things because you'd have to change it everywhere it appears and things can get convoluted. So it'd keep the first (or nearly) name you ever gave it, even if that ability doesn't exist anymore.
Man, I remember wondering about that Wing Clip icon. It didn't make much sense to me. Now I get it :D Edit: o, yep. Also wondered about Seal of Righteousness having a random flying hammer icon before.
Fck I want Thunderbolt O.O In fact, it's the ability that Thrall uses against Mannoroth in the Orc Campaign end cutscene! :O I always wanted to do that with my Doomhammer, but they didn't give me such beautiful skill =( And look at all those removed shaman skills... Lightning Storm seems like a beautiful spell :')
I would like to see something about the changes from vanilla until now. What was meta before and now? How did the focus of the game change during that time? What changed the game drastically?
Trip was clearly meant to be an ability for druid cat-form. As any cat owner will attest, cats think getting under your feet near the stairs and/or when you are carrying something heavy is the height of mirth.
Mind Rot would be really cool if it would drain mana each time the target casts a spell. Then slap a 2-3 min CD on it and priests would have a cool ability that would Change the enemies playstyle for a short time
About Holy Ward, i wanted to just point that you can absorb holy damage. In classic / vanilla versions, you can get the Holy Protection potion ( classic.wowhead.com/item=6053/recipe-holy-protection-potion ), which would give you a shield that absorbs holy damage only. I doubt it was because they didn't wanted you to absorb holy damage and leave it as a pure damage instead.
8:10 Wait, how is that weird? That a shadow based attacker has a spell that protects them from holy spells to me makes more sense than a fire-based attacker having protection from fire, the light is the natural enemy of the shadow...
That crusader strike ability would have made pallies stupid tough. Pallies are the only class I've ever gotten to max level, despite being the slowest to level. But that crusader strike... woah boy. Deals instant low cost Holy damage, with a stackable debuff that increases the holy damage the target takes? That single target dps would be just plain scary.
Dude, Shamans are already pretty op in Classic, but apparently in the old beta they were god incarnate lol Might as well have been the first Hero Class.
They were placeholder abilities, they needed buttons to push while running around in beta, unlike release paladins, they didn't need any buttons other than seals and judgement.
8: The icon is taken from warcraft 3, the origin of a lot of old icon names could indeed be tracked back to wc3, and this is one of many examples, the Human race hero Dwarven mountain king had Stormbolt, which the icon and effect/missile was named thunderbolt. 7: Mind Rot still exists in wc3 but its unused for any unit or hero. it has the same effect as you said, but as its unused it wasn't clear which unit was it intended for. Mana burn: its weird to me how do priests have mana burn because originally in warcraft 3 the night elf hero demon hunter or illidan has this ability, alongside the Fel Stalkers. 5: the icon of holy ward is used for undead unit Banshe in wc3 and its called Anti Magic Shell, originally it used to block a certain number of spell and magic damage to a target but another version that the units have to date is to just make them completely immune to spell and magic. 4: Side note, i'm almost 100% sure the stormbolt icon is just placeholder, but that aside, Paladins and Death Knights in warcraft 3 indeed to cancel eachother. with the most obvious example being Holy Light: which can heal non undead allies and damage undead for half the amount that's healed, and Death Coil: which can heal only undead, but deal half the damage to any non undead living units. 3: Sleep belongs to the Undead race hero the Dreadlord which does the same thing, except it makes the target invulnerable for 3 seconds and after that the effect can be interrupted if someone attacks the unit. (including friendlies which is how people counter the ability) 2: Yes Ethereal form is a shaman ability, the Tauren spirit walkers in warcraft 3 have this ability. and to add to it, any unit that gains ethereal status in wc3 takes increased damage from spells and magic attack type. and receives more healing. 1: about Lightning Storm: icon is called Call Storm, and originally in the beta of warcraft 3 the orc units apparently had what's known now the orc Warlocks that you only see in the campaigns. and instead of the Witch doctor/Shaman/Spirit walker, one of those units was the Warlock (or atleast it used the model of what's now known as warlock) which had this Call Storm ability and there are picture from it that can be seen in beta wc3 cover art.

What is that awesome chiptunes music in the end??
What is the music at 8:00?
What is the begenning background song i need to know plz someone
the icon for the trip ability also is used for the gnome racial escape artist
Bruh that invisibility totem would hve been amazing in pvp.
Group astral recall seems like it could be used to troll unless it asked players if they wanted to teleport
Thunderbolt uses the same icon as Stormbolt from Warcraft 3, btw.
Now I get it :D
Edit: o, yep. Also wondered about Seal of Righteousness having a random flying hammer icon before.
Invisibility totem is actually used by Thrall in the scenario where you rescue Baine with Saurfang to sneak past the guards.
I played beta and I remember some of these abilities. Pallys were a mess back then. Even upon release the seal system was horrible to play with
Fck I want Thunderbolt O.O
In fact, it's the ability that Thrall uses against Mannoroth in the Orc Campaign end cutscene! :O I always wanted to do that with my Doomhammer, but they didn't give me such beautiful skill =(
And look at all those removed shaman skills... Lightning Storm seems like a beautiful spell :')
I would like to see something about the changes from vanilla until now. What was meta before and now? How did the focus of the game change during that time? What changed the game drastically?
I need to say Befuddle more :P
I doubt it was because they didn't wanted you to absorb holy damage and leave it as a pure damage instead.
wait but there's a potion of holy protection that you can pick up at a low level
8:10 Wait, how is that weird? That a shadow based attacker has a spell that protects them from holy spells to me makes more sense than a fire-based attacker having protection from fire, the light is the natural enemy of the shadow...
We finally got to see ben Bainmaine when you were talking about paladins lol
4:58 this may just be because it's the icon for the Thunderbolt ability in W3
It was Storm bolt in Warcraft 3.
Nice video, but you should have looked at WC3 abilities. Thunderbolt and Ethereal form are clearly from Warcraft 3
The troll potential for group astral recall
"You didn't give me the epic drop from Naxx? Okay." (Starts casting group astral recall )
I have heard of mind rot, i wonder if any npcs use it, or did it come from wc3?
For those who don't know the Thunderbolt ability was most likely modeled after an ability Thrall used during the cinematic against Mannoroth
12:40 Astral Recall was given to Shaman, but the HS effect was just for themselves. Still exists.
Shaman was already insanly powerfull at the start of vanila... With all these stuff, it would be extremely stupid.
Polymorph was definitely different from Warcraft 2 then in wow. In Warcraft 2 polymorph also did damage to the enemy's who was a sheep.
Dude, Shamans are already pretty op in Classic, but apparently in the old beta they were god incarnate lol Might as well have been the first Hero Class.
"I could tell it's for priests"
No shit, it says shadow word
Holy Ward was for Warlocks. 🙄
They were placeholder abilities, they needed buttons to push while running around in beta, unlike release paladins, they didn't need any buttons other than seals and judgement.
11:00 didn't know goblins were playable in beta...
(including friendlies which is how people counter the ability)
2: Yes Ethereal form is a shaman ability, the Tauren spirit walkers in warcraft 3 have this ability. and to add to it, any unit that gains ethereal status in wc3 takes increased damage from spells and magic attack type. and receives more healing.
Thunderbolt + Weapon Chain = Marvel's Thor
WoW if #10 wasnt removed Ret paladins actually would of been probably pretty damn good in pve and especially PvP when Geared out.
Nah they just go oom
Man mass hearth would be a good way to troll random people in the world. "hey wanna group for this elite" and then hearth after the kill only to find out their hearth was still set to the other side of the world.
Need to bring back true damage for holy abilities and spells.
Skillshots on Muradin are best in the video, haha!
Should've kept thunderbolt for ench shamans since that's how Thrall attacks in war3. Instead it's palas carrying mk nerfed ability
The ability literally uses the same icon as storm bolt, and you're gonna tell me it's based off of Thrall?
@@eiknaurjensen7927
i dont know what was based on what but storm bolt is basically random generic nuke+stun.
Trip also uses elite dwarf mob in front of Uldaman dungeon.
