had 2 tours at Scampton , 27,83 and 617 sqns Vulcans in late 60's, no.3 FTS in 80's. Hope the Guy Gibson Dambusters museum can be saved within the Red Arrows hangar. Sad to see history flattened for development. only the memories and ghosts will remain of such a bustling RAF base.

My father got to fly in Hunters during the early 60's with 208 Sqn- I feel very proud of him that he did. A timelessly beautiful design, as many on here have said, wish i could have had one in my log book.

Like E-Type Jaguars some designs never look less than beautiful no matter how old they are.
Visited Scampton in the mid-60s while on an Easter ATC camp at another RAF station. We were told strictly no photography while on the base and were then lined up in front of a V-Bomber (Vulcan? it was a long time ago) to have our photos taken with some of the 617 crews!

I was on CCF Air cadet camp in 1982 at Brawdy and spent a couple of hours of my life in the hangar polishing the wings of a Hunter. A couple of nights later we were down the local bowling alley (Ahem...) and got told that the Argentinians had invaded the Falkland Island. Naturally, us 15-year-old cadets assumed these islands were somewhere off Scotland and rushed back to base asap!
