Fun fact: A Spitfire was once captured by the Luftwaffe and was fitted with a DB 605 engine. Sadly, it was destroyed during a bomber raid during WW2.

@@RAF71chingachgook Ugly? How could this be seen as such?
Emperor Sudo The canopy is brutally ugly. Really bad. It makes no sense. They kept that break frame mess throughout the war. Looks like Buba made it in his tin shed. No, it looks like Buba’s tin shed.
@@RAF71chingachgook But it was for pilot protection and survivability. Durability especially. If you shoot a bubble canopy, half the dome shatters and it has a larger profile. I wouldn't want a shell going off right by my face with nothing to stop it before it hits the front of the cockpit and damages instruments if not turning the pilot into tomato paste. Not to mention disruption of aerodynamics and the freezing temperatures.
@@RAF71chingachgook If a round of any sort, explosive or not hits a 109 canopy, which is quite a task within itself, there is steel and whole blocks of bulletproof glass to eat them up and protect the cockpit. And if regular glass gets shot somewhere in a 109, only a small portion of the small portion of canopy glass will shatter
During engine start, what I assume to be father and son is a priceless moment. The boy's eyes never break from the formidable craft. This moment will leave a lifelong impression on the boy thanks to a father that knows what a little man needs to see! Bravo!

@@dobermanpac1064 Yes I'm well aware the reputation of a taildragger. I'm commenting on what many Luftwaffe pilots speak of when landing a 109 due to the rake and positioning of the landing gear.
They tended to groundloop if the pilot was not on top of the plane due to its narrow landing gear track. Many of the great aces liked the fact the 109 was a little hard to take off and land as the measure of a pilot even during wartime was the quality of the landing. Bringing a difficult bird like the 109 down and making a smooth as glass landing was the sign of a superior pilot.
