  • Switching to a plant-based diet has been a lifesaver for many. And Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has always been part of that growing community. He's best known for his landmark clinical study conducted at Cleveland Clinic beginning in 1985. As previously reported, of the 22 patients who suffered from severe heart disease, 17 stuck on a low fat, whole food, plant-based diet and stopped the progression of the disease; four experienced a complete reversal. After that study, Dr. Esselstyn transitioned to plant-based nutrition himself and has been encouraging the medical community to help patients be strategic with their healthy eating habits.
As for him, he takes pride in the approach he applies to his patients.
If you need to hear more proof about how a plant-based diet can prevent and reverse heart disease, this is the conversation you need to hear right now. Also, in case some refresher is necessary - having both high blood pressure and diabetes can greatly increase your risk for heart disease. That's why stories like this matter.
Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.D. from Western Reserve University. In 1956, pulling the No. 6 oar as a member of the victorious United States rowing team, he was awarded a gold medal at the Olympic Games. He was trained as a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic and at St. George’s Hospital in London. In 1968, as an Army surgeon in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Dr. Esselstyn has been associated with the Cleveland Clinic since 1968. During that time, he has served as President of the Staff and as a member of the Board of Governors. He chaired the Clinic’s Breast Cancer Task Force and headed its Section of Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. It’s very interesting to me that around the same time (roughly) a group of doctors were looking at these things. Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Ornish, Colin Campbell and Dr. John McDougall. Wow. There may be others I’m forgetting.
They discovered these truths apart from each other although they looked at numerous research studies from the previous 50+ years.
What’s the travesty of it is that more people didn’t hear about their work and make the changes necessary to heal themselves. I found all of this AFTER going through TWO heart bypass surgeries separated by 18 years. Yet all this information was available before I had the first one.
I am so thankful for all these smart, brave doctors who started on this path to help so many of us.
Cyrus and Robby, you guys are like the next generation. You are doing great work and helping so many of us. There’s a lot to be thankful for today. God bless.

My father in law is 96. I have never in 40 years seen him raise a piece of lettuce to his lips. He eats mainly white potatoes a few carrots , tomatoes , chicken, beef, eggs and blood pudding. He goes through more 2% milk than a baby cow. So is he unique. What is it about him that is different. Again he is 96 and I do not see him slowing down. He just walks with a walker now…..

Good genes and some luck. I know people in their 80's who still smoke and haven't died from it. Doesn't mean that we should all smoke.

@@tanyasydney2235 You are right. We should all smoke and eat like this father in law, chicken, beef, eggs and blood pudding. That's hilarious how people think that with anecdotes, they can counter studies done on lots of people.
