  • Can a low-fat, whole food, plant-based diet reverse clogged arteries? The Ornish diet definitely helps your arteries get less and less clogged over time. As for high protein, low carb diets like Atkins, paleo, ketogenic - it's going to be a problem. And this is why Mastering Diabetes has this conversation with Dr. Dean Ornish.
    The Ornish program is a low-fat, lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet that focuses on whole, unprocessed foods that are nutrient-rich and naturally low in both fat and refined carbohydrates, such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, and limited amounts of nuts, seeds, and nonfat dairy products.
    For a long time now, this plant-based diet has proven to prevent and reverse the progression of many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
    Now, it's time to hear the science behind it. How is a plant-based diet the best diet for your heart. Here's the conversation.
    _ _ _ _
    Dr. Dean Ornish is an American physician and researcher. He is the president and founder of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. The author of Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease, Eat More, Weigh Less and The Spectrum, he is a well-known advocate for using diet and lifestyle changes to treat and prevent heart disease. The Ornish Reversal Program is covered by Medicare.
    Dr. Ornish has been a physician consultant to former President Bill Clinton since 1993, when Ornish was asked by Hillary Clinton to consult with the chefs at The White House, Camp David, and Air Force One. In 2010, after the former President's cardiac bypass grafts became clogged, Clinton, encouraged by Ornish, followed a mostly plant-based diet.
    In 2011, Barack Obama appointed Ornish to the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health.

    I live in India I had a heart attack mainly due to stress dealing with corrupt bosses I was advised bypass surgery with guarantee that I could live for 10 more years. I refused. I followed most of dean Ornish's advice in his book. I recovered. I am 84 and still active.
    many of my friends are following most of his programme and enjoying good health in their 80s.
    Please do not give half-baked ill-informed comments based o prejudices. Let us those who need it follow the advice of Ornish.

    I’d love to go with dr dean or ish but I was a full fledge vegan for 4 years and felt awful, I took a b12 supliment and fallowed many vegan people and tryed to get all the knowledge I could on it. One day I just decided to eat a cheeseburger and within 45 minutes I started to feel better than I have in years and then I ate meat the next morning and I felt like a new human, I couldn’t believe how bad I had felt for years. My friend and his wife had the same thing happen thoe they only stuck with it for 6 months from feeling so bad. I want to believe and follow dean but the fact is I just felt awful on a vegan plant base diet not to mention terrible stomach cramps from all the beans ect.

      Yep, I went vegetarian for a few years after having lost a lot of weight on the Atkins diet and having people tell me how unhealthy it was. I felt great at first on veg. but a year into it I began experiencing joint pain, tooth decay, hair loss, fatigue, and the list goes on. It took me a while to realize it was the vegetarian lifestyle and I started adding meat back into my diet. It didn’t come full circle until I removed all grains from my diet, mainly wheat. They cause me great digestive distress and skin issues. Now I focus on meat and non starchy veggies and I don’t hold off on the fat.

    Why would Dr. Ornish state that fish oil was considered good fat? Would he mention flax seeds/chia seeds for good Omega-3 fat w/o the negative side effects.

    • @thetruth2230
      @thetruth2230 4 місяці тому

      @@Stupid_youngnot true. Please link the studies and research that shows this. First, there are different ways people can go about a ketogenic diet. You can eat cured or canned meats and a lot of prepackaged, processed foods and still be considered keto, but it’s not anymore healthy than a plant based diet of the same nature. Imo if you are cutting out processed junk and eating as close to nature as you can, you’re doing it right, whether you lean more towards the meats or more towards the veggies, but not eliminating either. There are necessary nutrients in both and some people do require more meats mainly because they are very nutrient dense and our bodies can utilize them more readily and some people are deficient. The only things that should be removed from the diet 100% across the board are wheat and sugar. There is absolutely no benefit to those two things in the diet.

    I have to question everything this Dr. says when he starts out with incorrect information. Atkins did NOT die from heart failure. He died from a brain injury suffered after he fell on an icey sidewalk and suffered a brain injury. So what else is this guy lying about?

    • @bmniac
      @bmniac 9 місяців тому

      That Atkins died of a brain injury is a lie. And the diet is dangerous in the long run,

      I think It’s important we hear all sides with an open mind and then 1) do our own further research and 2) acknowledge that a one size fits all diet approach doesn’t work.

    • @ashsharma3169

      Keeping an open mind, Dr. Atkins arteries were clogged with plaque. Red meats are high in carnitine which is converted by certain bacteria in small intestine to TMA and the liver converts it to TMAO, a highly atherogenic substance. Large studies show a a four years (average) in red meat diet compared to say Mediterranean diet. This is why Adventists live long (mostly plant based diet). Personally, I eat mixed (though no red meats) with protein mainly salmon or other fish.

      Atkins’ fall was the result of heart failure - a heart attack. The fall complicated things. Low carb is not a good plan for longevity. Your WFPB adherents are the longest lived AND healthy. There are no centenarian Carnivores.

      According to Google : Atkins died on April 17, at age 72. After his death, his widow stated that Atkins's coronary-artery disease had progressed in the final years of his life with a new blockage, a procedure to remedy the blockage, and that he was taking heart-rhythm medication.

    All I know is if I eat greasy shit, chips, fish and chips, pizza and cheesy pasta. My blood pressure and sugar go through the roof for days.
    If I eat plants and vegetables only , no oil or dairy everything settles down
    I am a life long hunter and fisherman, never smoked and only drank infrequently, had a heart attack out of nowhere .
    Been following a plant based diet since but any blip with sugar , or dairy , oils especially stuff fried sends my BP/BS through the roof.
    I am now certain plant based diet is the most healthy without oils.
    But if you can source wild fresh salmon , sea tout , mackerel , sardines from un polluted waters I think they would be beneficial also the problem is pollution with fish, at least with organic vegetables, legumes and grains you know roughly that it's safe
