You should tune into 'Homestead Heart' UA-cam channel and view her and her husband's videos of them with how they planted watermelon. They plant different varieties of watermelons, and they have really good results. They didn't have a mound. They planted on level ground they prepared, and what they harvested was AMAZiNG!
Boss man put some garlic around the garden. Also boss man you might want to consider chicken wire and those 6ft green and tan poles. Wrap that chicken wire around it and it keeps everything out. However build you a little wire door to walk around. I would do it before the germinate. I like the videos. Keep doing your thing boss man.

Just a tip for those caterpillars and to avoid garden pests in general ... try planting things (flowers and herbs) that attract beneficial insects that work to naturally kill caterpillars and the eggs too. And different types of bird seed attracts certain birds that eat them too. Hard for me to say exactly which ones, as I've never grown watermelon, but look it up for sure.

Hey Bossman, you know that you can buy mesh and put over your plants while they’re growing and if you want volume just put some sticks under the mesh so that it won’t be resting on the plants. Just a suggestion because you’re putting your heart and soul into it. Work smarter not harder. Awesome! 👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯🌱🌱🌱
My brother put some protection around your watermelon bed. We lost a lot of watermelons to animals last year. Especially with a wooded area. Good luck with your spring garden

Squash grows like crazy. Melons should do great, I planted Black Diamonds, Congos, Sugar Baby’s and Crimson Sweets about 3 weeks ago and they’re growing fine. You’re right it’s still going to grow.
We are here in NC but the chickens will take care of them. As far as the calipers, you'll have to cover the plants with a mosquito net!!

I’m in SW Houston caterpillars, worm and even aphids are attacking my raised beds. I was able to get my purple hulls in a few weeks ago, trying to beat our heat. Thanks guys for all the good tips. Great job Bossman!

A cheaper way to get compost is from your local sewer plant. Just can’t put it on the ground because it will burn up the plants so add a small amount with leaves and other nutrients and that will start to break down to good soil. You’re doing good though! I like your try it this way and if it fails you will try something new!
Great video... you popped up in my feed and decided to watch. The best thing I've found that works great on the caterpillar is Thuricide BT. Hope that helps.

Boss man you need a little more space. The vines on melon grow wild and long brother. However, you are doing a great job.
I had a few rows of blacktail mountain watermelons that I left completely off of my drip irrigation and they somehow still made it. I kick myself for not planting an entire field that summer because if I had I would have had to do nothing and got lots of watermelons. Set and forget. Depending on your temps some light agribon row cover may help your catepillar problem. Also I would recommend giving them doses of wtaer down fish emulsion as they come up. Adding some black composted manure wormier the better or organic compost to the soil will greatly help. Healthy organic plants can outcompete most viruses or pests. Looking really good though!

A mixture of BLUE Dawn dish soap and water. Should protect your plants. Different bugs and various creatures swarm in different years, we all have those June Bugs.
I've even seen Tarantulas swarm in far south Texas down by Mexico. You never know. Keep on doing your thing, homestead, coming along nicely.

Bossman great attitude, plant and learn. It’s not like you need to depend on the plants to eat. This is something you enjoy doing and it’s great to learn on at your speed. Depending on how it goes you can research off read-it to make adjustments or just make adjustments on plant growth. 👊🏽

Watermelons need to be watered every day in the afternoon water them good get yourself a water pail with the spout and start watering them everyday in the afternoon. You should of watered them when you planted them. The more water you give them after they sprout and start growing the watermelons the bigger and more tastier they are going to be!!! as the watermelons get start getting bigger water them in the morning and late afternoon.

It’s organic and it works on all plants. I love peaceful area where your home is. Giving me some ideas for where to look for my retirement home to be. Keep up the good work. 👍🏿👊🏿

Use some 669 fertilizer
Vinegar spray: A vinegar and water solution will kill and repel most garden pests, including caterpillars. Mix two tablespoons of vinegar with 1 gallon of water, and spray wherever you've seen caterpillars. I just use a pump up spray to apply mine with.
Get some Sevendust and sprinkle on your purple hood peas that will keep the insects from eating your plants

Melons are heavy feeders so have the high nitrogen fertilizer ready,water well and often. You have corn next to melons and they are heavy feeders too. Write down the day the melons sprout and find out how many days your variety take to mature and follow to a tee. Try 1 melons to judge of they ready or need a few more days

Watermelons need water dig a trench with your garden hose around the mound too hold the water when it rains.

Hey Bossman, It's was a lady told me how she plant green and not have thoses pest to get on your plant. She told me she use Cayenne pepper to prevent that. But don't quote me on that. But I will ask her again. And I will let you know.
