Thanks for joining me on this winter project. I am planning to use a few of these to control my outside lights too. Starter Kit: amzn.to/3Hn8dsT Plug in starter: amzn.to/3Y3QdKG
Good presentation, I'm just not in favor of my life being managed by smart devices and smart phone apps.
We made my dad sit on his hands when he talked years ago……..he started moving his head around like crazy lmao
My grandfather was like that so much
Ive never felt more called in my life than by that joke. 😂
We have been heavy into Lutron switches in our house for quite some time. The Cassera line of switches is fabulous and we have done a number of replacement three-way, lighting applications, using exactly what you have listed. For example, in our kitchen, when our kitchen was revamped. The contractor installed, undercabinet lighting, and only put one switch in place to control it. I swapped that switch out for a Cossetta and added the little small switches in a number of different locations mounted straight on the surface of the tile backsplash. No drilling nothing I just used self stick automobile grade tape to mount them up. They are fabulous. We also have Lutron switches for our ceiling fans that allow us to control the fan speed without having to pull a chain or flip a switch on the fan itself. Lou Tron products are fabulous.
I work primarily installing lighting and these are a life saver
Edit:
Ps huge tip
You don't need to cut any hole from the drywall to install these
There is a back plate on the wall plate that can be removed for flusher install
Install the wall plate with anchors and mount the faceplate
Thats great to hear, I know they have a pro system, the RA I believe its called I feel like this is a lot like it for way less money
The anchors should have been included in the bracket kit.
@@Willp4139 Nah, just use slightly used bubble gum.
That’s what I was thinking. They have like flat plates you can just stick to the wall with the portable controller. I have smart lights in my bathroom and hate where the switch is. I want to make it by the other door. What other wall switches don’t need wiring if they can just be paired with smart lights if that makes sense? Like Hue has the button one but was looking for something to look a little more traditional if that makes sense and if they’re connecting to the lights over WiFi they don’t need any wiring I believe.
I did the same thing in my basement. I love the Lutron controls. They are so easy to setup and use. I love being able to turn off the light either by my phone or voice assistant. I have some on controls on my porch and garage coach lights. I have them scheduled to turn on at dusk and off at 2am everyday. I want to expand my system in the future.
Switched out my entire home to these (three times). Love them.
I've been dreading adding a 3 way switch in my hall. Perfect timing!
I outfitted our last house with a lot of these and it made some lighting configurations VERY easy. Lutron has the best HomeKit compatible switches, in my opinion. They just released a few new style switches, too. The Claro and Diva rocker switches look similar to normal large rectangular switches but have smart functionality. The main issue I have with smart switches is how much money you end up dropping if you install a lot of them…
So glad to hear you have had a good experience with these. They aren't cheap but seem phenomenal.
Great video. I wish I saw this video last week. I just bought wiring and switches to install extra light switches in my barn. This would have saved me lots of time and it would look better too.
Love the Lutron Caseta...I now can control lights in my barn from multiple locations with the pico remote
That’s the kind of setup I have in my apartment. Works well and very reliable.
What a great idea it looks so easy I tell you the technology is getting better and better making our lives easier. Thanks again
Love this... we're in the process of upgrading our outside lights to run entirely on smart switches so that they can be automated. But it would be cool to have a switch or even a panel that can turn on inside lights remotely as well since we don't have those automated at all.
Have been using Meross light switches, indoor and outdoor outlets, lamp, garage door opener switch. No "bridge" required, just network.
They also do schedules and scenes, auto-off after a length of time, and integrations (using Google Home I have an outlet go on when my Chromecast goes on).
Not too expensive. Works well. Biggest issue might be a network disconnect - rare! - just power cycle the device to reconnect. Very rare, though.
Lucky viewers. Thanks for these continuous easter eggs.
Can’t say I’m fully on board with tracking(not lighting).
I love home automation systems such as these. My house is controlled with Insteon devices I installed slowly over time, perhaps through as many as 20 years. A couple of downsides have worried me: 1) Selling the house may require some new owner (or even pre-sale agent) education; 2) What happens if the device manufacturer disappears (ala Insteon)?
First world problems & the hazards of convenience.
Thanks for the video - I always learn when I watch. Great ideas presented concisely and always interesting!
I really appreciate that, thank you
Really great videos on your channel, and welcome to New Hampshire! You may already know, but Leviton has a similar set up, and they have a switch that does not require a neutral wire, which can help out in a lot of situations. They also have the additional wireless switches that you can install anywhere and pair with the wired one. Probably not quite as nice as Lutron, but works well.
Almost too easy! Thanks for the info!
Thanks - you saved me a lot of work on my "Honey do" project.
Thanks-very helpful and your demo on installation and explanation was excellent.
I really appreciate that, thank you
Great video! Thanks for the tip! I will buy these for my new house and forget about 3-way wiring.
Thank you, its nice to control them from anywhere or even program special buttons like 1 "panic" that turns every outside light on at once. Fun stuff
I had originally bought a couple TP-Link smart switches but then determined that I don't have a neutral on my switches since my wiring is pretty old. I bought a Feit switch from Costco which does the same thing basically but without all the extra bells and whistles and you don't need a neutral. I just wanted a switch close to the outside door so I didn't track dirt and snow into the kitchen when coming in and out of the garage. This switch was pretty cheap at $20 Canadian.
I use the motion sensor in my garage. I actually have 2 of them in the garage, one by the main door into the house and the other by the back door from the yard. They control the same lights. What's also nice is you can have multiple pico's to control the same switch. My hall/stairway lights have 2 pico's and the main switch. It's a great system and it integrates with Apple Home as well.
Thats great to hear you have had a good experience. I need to try one of the motions too, thats a great idea
Great demo & explanation 👍
I did a similar thing with my basement where I replaced the main basement switch at the top of the stairs with one that has a remote. I wanted to be able to turn the main basement lights on so I could see going down/up the stairs and where I'm going in the basement, and then be able to turn those main lights off when I reach the room that I use as a workroom that runs on a separate line and where I tend to spend many hours in. I attached the remote outside the work room and now can control the main lights at either end. I got the switch and remoter from Home Depot for around $30.
Sure makes Life easier, Good stuff.
You have going on, I mean please forgive me for the slang but I love those plugs! Thank you for sharing it means alot to me.
Great video! I got one of these recently but hadn't gotten around to making a video yet. I have a couple things to add. I'm not sure if you mentioned it but you can just pair the remote with the switch and forgo the smart hub. This makes it a great solution for someone who isn't tech savvy. Considering the price of wire and potentially labor, this can be a relatively cheap solution for adding a 3 way. Another big advantage of these is that you can get switches that don't require a neutral. They can be hard to identify but the Lutron Caseta Diva dimmers fit the bill. If you don't want dimming and want no neutral, the model you want is PD-5WS-DV. Unfortunately it is an expensive switch but probably still cheaper than wire and labor for many.
❤❤❤
I have an end switch for a total of 3 switches with that end one dead (no wires attached) in an old home. I think it used to be part of a 3 way because it’s at the bottom of the stairs and the hall light (I’m guessing) was part of that. I cannot install wiring to make the current dead switch part of a 3 way. My only way of currently lighting the upstairs hall light is through its upstairs switch.
Could I replace the upstairs switch like shown and simply add an additional remote switch to the downstairs bank of 3 with the one currently now dead working to light the upstairs hallway light.
0:02 Love The Dog Switch. 🐕💡
Last time I tried to install a 3 way, my wife was not going for it :D Great vid, thx
Kasa and Tappo (from TP-Link) are great as well. No need for a hub, they have controllers built into the devices (including bulbs), but you do need to have a strong wi-fi signal. I've got them for my garage and porch lights, with my router at the other end of the house. It can be finiky to setup, but price is great and I get to have multiple colours for the front of the house to match the seasons/holiday themes!
This is what we have, and we use Alexa routines to automate some of the Kasa switches (outside lights, etc). However, Kasa does not offer one of these remote switches. They must be hard wired. :-( This is a huge missed opportunity.
@@markkempton4579 yup. same here, I use them to run my christmas light schedules and my front yard accent lighting. Super easy and they have a manual override whenever by just pressing the switch.
Love my Lutron stuff, especially the Caseta stuff. On a sidenote I talk like you and my Italian neighbor says I talk like an Italian. LOL
P.S. Hey Silver Cymbol !!!!!
Good info and reviews, We "Scribed" to you today and put you on our favorite channels list
on on channel so even more people can enjoy your reviews.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO 😃
I LOVE the Lutron line! I don't have any myself, but I've been doing research for when I eventually own a home and install smart appliances. Have you seen their blinds and shades?
I wonder why Linus didn't go with these for his new house. Lord knows they would have worked 1000x better than the system he chose.
His main reason was the buttons, they were too mushy. I have this system and he's right, but I'm not that picky, and I don't even use the switches, i use google commands.
I think another reason was the the 3 way switches have to be battery. Again, just don't use them, leave them for guests/wife approval factor, and just use google. It's a rock solid system since it's on it's own frequency and the hub can be hardwired via ethernet.
They also integrate nicely with Alexa. "Alexa, turn on the basement storage lights." They make these for ceiling fans too, and also integrate nicely with Home Assistant.
No
Good explanation 👍
Awesome! Thanks, again, UA-cam Dad!
As always "Great video ! "
I know it's out of habit, but I love that your trimmed the ground wire while connecting it to a completely bare wire. Kinda redundant haha
Nice video. I think you should’ve shown how you need to install a specific Lutron hub or bridge and how you will need to get that working with your home network before any of this actual works. You did mention that the hub comes with a starter kit, so you’d need to buy that first.
I can’t wait for them to come out with the diva version of the pico remotes.
I love your videos!
Wow! I really appreciate that, thank you
Very nice camera work!
They used to make these that didn't require any phone. Just install the switch in place of the existing one. Then mount the new one where ever desired and it screwed to the wall. I wish mine still worked and they have been discontinued. I guess this is the next best option.
They are well worth it.
I agree, my only wish is that they could get a little thinner, every box I seem to work on these days is packed
excellent 👍👍
Good Videos , I subscribed 💯💯👊🏽👊🏽
I learned this from a sparky. If you take a non contact voltage detector and rub it quickly on your shirt sleeve, the static will set it off and act as a self test. He did it before EVERY use.
There’s a seventh (and my favorite) way to control the switches: voice command! I use Siri all the time to turn the switches off and on!
That is very true, I don't know why I don't use that. Very handy!
No
Nice basement. I'm jealous
Very interesting video, thanks for posting. Could you have used the wago connector on the neutral? Wonder if this technology can be used install a doorbell without wiring low voltage to the doorbell.
As always, you make great videos. However, I would have recommended you show how to test which black wire is the line (hot) and which is load. Using your tester, you can set the original switch to the off position. The black wire with no power is the load, while the black wire that is energized is the line (hot). Easy peasy.
That could have been nice to show, but for what it's worth, the wire order doesn't matter with the Caseta switches. Either black wire can receive the line.
@@RonFarberNewman Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. I use the Leviton equivalent smart switches and they require you to know which line is hot and which is load. Being able to swap out either black wire is a nice feature of the Caseta line I wasn't aware of. That said, I'm pretty happy with the Leviton switches and would recommend them. If I remember right, I went with Leviton because you don't need a base unit (apparently you do with Lutron).
Welcome to smart home technology sir! Its addictive, tread with caution lol
Very true, it can add up quick! Only limit is the wallet
Smart home bad. bAD smarthome.
Great video! I am looking to control a light by an entry door to a detached garage from inside my house. Do you know what kind of range the remote switch has?
Thanks for this. I have seen the pico devices but did not understand their use case. I am heavily invested in the Kasa system and want to add some "three-way" light switches in my home where I do not have three-way wiring. TP-Link does not currently offer anything like this, so I am going to have to look into layering over a Lutron system. I prefer the Kasa switches, so I do not want Lutron everywhere, but this is a glaring gap on their part that I'd like to fill with another brand/ecosystem.
Liking just for the Italian joke…. 😂. Good stuff mate ty
This looks great thanks for sharing. I’m loving the channel! As a fellow Masshole I’ve also very much enjoyed Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire. It looks like you are at least somewhat far north in NH with all the snow. Question does anyone here know of a surge protector/power strip that is Wi-Fi compatible but also has a wall mountable switch like you show here? I currently have a Wi-Fi power strip that I control via an iPhone and iPad, however I’d love to also be able to add a wall switch, as I use the power strip to plug in two free standing lamps in my living room. The house was built in 1950 so there are very few wall switches and the wiring is interesting!
I love the joke coming from a fellow Dego!
Cool product and install. Did I miss your installation of the bridge?
That joke about hands at 0:35? I resemble that remark.
Great video as usual - love your channel! I am building a new house and have quite a few 3 way switches to install - do you think that the inspectors will buy into this system over hard wiring them (it would save me a ton of work and hassle if I could!)
I really appreciate it, thank you!
GE has a similar switch as well, much cheaper than Lutron, and I haven't had any issues with the switch so far
The current rating is only 1 amp. Do they sell one good for more current? I have flood lights outside I would like to remotely turn on.
Is there any solution for those wiring without a neautral wire? I live in a country where its mostly just the 2 hots + ground.
Handy! I made the mistake of buying different units that were on sale. Now I have 4 different apps. Better to pick a brand and stick with it 👍
I did the same thing years ago. I feel like Lutron isn't perfect, their old dimmers failed a lot after 7 years or so. But this new line seems too be rock solid and they should keep adding more in the future if you decide to go this route
Lutron Caseta is like the most expensive ecosystem for smart switches, not inexpensive at all.
The only real draw to them is that those remotes are awesome.
I recently replaced my WEMO Smart Switches with Kasa Smart Switches. The installation required the installer to identify and mark the black line and load wires that were installed on the single pole toggle switch. On the Kasa switch the line and load wires were marked. You didn’t mention that in this video for the Lutron product. Was this not a requirement?
How long do the batteries last in the remote? If you mount it, are you taking it back down to change them every few weeks?
I use the motion sensor in my garage. That way our brightest lights go on when the door opens!
Very cool! we could use that too, the opener bulbs are very dim
DId you need to use the control module or the hub when you did this? You only showed installing the switch and the Pico remote switch.
Hey Chris, how you guys holdin up? I just saw on the news its -108 degrees in New Hampshire right now!
Hi there! Now that would be cold. We hit -20f but its a toasty 8 degrees now, so at least its better. Got some frozen stuff but still holding on! Thanks for checking in, hope you are well!
Thank you for the great video. Not only is it very informative but also very well done. I have used Lutron dimmers for years and have found their products to be first rate. This is an interesting solution for situations requiring multiple control of a single light. I assume it uses WiFi. What are the security implications? Can the system be password protected?
The switches are not wifi. It uses its own frequency and doesn’t interfere with anything. The hub can be wifi but you can also just wire it up with ethernet. Hub is not needed unless you need phone control or smart features. Internet can be out and basic physical switch functions still work.
Thank you very much. Yes it is password protected for the app portion, the rest is all direct radio control.
Yes, excellent points
In theory this sounds great and easy, I would just do it via wiring and stand alone devices. No guarantee what you have now will be available later, or that software will be supported down the road. Or the complexities that come with said issues if you do sell at some point. I guess it is minimized if you are only doing one switch, but to have a whole house with this stuff seems like a headache later. Or a liability when you go to sell.
I agree that often tech built into a house can be a big issue down the road. Thats what scares me about a lot of the amazon no-name versions of these. Lutron has been selling this line for about 5 years now and seems to be going very strong and they are a prety recognized brand. I won't be using them for every switch but for some the remote stuff will be really helpful.
Can it be used to power a ceiling fan with a light?
Do they make these with dimmers?
What if you don't have a neutral in your switch box. As a 40 year electrician, I've seen many circuits that have what's called a "switch loop", where the hot is run into a light fixture box with only one wire going to the switch box. The current is sent to the switch via the black and returned to the light via the white wire. Would this work in that case?
During a power outage, do the switches maintain the state they were in prior to the outage, or do they default to off?
Great question! Yes they do. This is from their manual: • Power failure memory: If power is interrupted, the control will return to its previously set level prior to interruption.
How do you install the wireless wiring?
i would suggest wrapping each wago in 2layers of tape to isure they dont do not pop lose in the box and short out
👏
Can you just double stick tape it to the wall or use the command removable stickers to place the remote?
Yes you can. My daughter wanted to have a remote for her table lamp if you got scared at night in bed. We stuck it right on her headboard. Just the remote. She loves it.
If you used wago on the white wire, I found out on mine, that there will be more room in the back of the box
Do these switches need the “cloud” to operate or can they be installed ‘off-gird’ without an internet connection?
No, they use radio between the modules to comunicate. The internet is only needed for outside access and these work fine with no internet at all, during outages, etc.
isn't that wire nut coded for how many wires can be installed on it ?
How do I link two switches to one plug
you need to do a video in where you learned to do all of this lol
Now add them to apple HomeKit or another smart home network 😉
Question: What happens to these if the internet goes down?
Thats a great question and a good reason these are cool. They ONLY use the internet for remote control from outside your house. At home they use local, direct radio control so no worries if the net is off.
I like your ceiling..what type of ceiling style is it called..Because I want the same for my basement.
Thank you. Its a suspended ceiling. The original ceiling was about 20 years, dirty, stained and pretty nasty. I just swapped the panels for these: amzn.to/3jkNVrQ Makes a big difference.
Outstanding! Can you please come to my house and fix a few things?
Similar to putting in a Receptacle.
Yes. They are too expensive to put all over but for specific lights, fans they give you a lot of flexibility and remote control
I love smart switches, but I always worry about the company going out of business or dropping support.
S.C., I'm 25 years commercial/industrial electrical, please, never rely on a non-contact voltage tester. Always verify with an appropriate meter.
I swear once someone goes to replace that switch its gonna be like one of the jars full of snakes
Question: how did you get that footage from inside the wall? 😲
I am lucky that one section of wall is open behind it. No special tricks, it was fun to see what it looks like
@@SilverCymbal Great footage and thank you! 😀👍
We just have to hope that the original switch is not one of the many that does not have a neutral in the box. So often they just dropped down two wires into the switch box.
Ikea has something similar
My single pole light switch has no neutral, and there is no neutral wire available. Is there a solution for me?
Yes, a very nice surprise if if you are controlling lights only. The Lutron light module does not require a neutral. I shoiuld have been more clear, so this one: amzn.to/3jOioPt just uses two hots and a ground like a reg switch. This is a starter kit that includes that version: amzn.to/3YqPPq8
What happen if I don't have natural wire
