I just got a 96 mustang Gt mint condition, everytime my dad drives it it’s fine and doesn’t grind at all when I drive it I grind into second or first at least one time
How certain are you that you have the clutch pedal fully to the floor everytime you shift? Also does the clutch pedals resistance feel consistent everytime? Or could you build pressure by rapidly pumping it? If yes, then I would check for air bubbles in the line. Any leaks between the master Cylinder(including inside the cab above the pedal) and the slave cylinder
I have the same problem into 3rd gear only and then after you go into 3rd it’ll grind the rest of the gears even if you double clutch. Thought I needed to adjust my cable at first but starting to think it’s sycro or something else as well
Messed up my third gear when I blew my clutch and drove home on that scared final trip home. Replaced the clutch but 3rd always grinds, so now I just go straight to fourth. It’s an old Impreza so I guess going 50 in 2nd is still appropriate

@@Faith-lr2xm leave it, all that might happen is first gear synchro gets completely worn down and skips out of gear. Then you would have to fix transmission but you likely have ten years of grinding before that happens
How does the synchronizer ring teeth line up perfectly with the gears teeth. Wouldn't there be a chance that the synchronizer ring teeth lines up between the gears teeth blocking the sliding clutch from meshing with the gears teeth?
Yeah and that happens now and then, it’s why your owners manual will telll you that now than then the gears will grind or the clutch won’t engage, just push clutch in and try again
My 6 speed grinds only on third gear. All my gears work properly and so does the clutch but when i shift to my third gear it always grinds. What could be the cause?????
Sorry for a late reply. But you could potentially be having too much play from a near by bearing. Such as the input shaft bearing. Or the pocket bearing that sits where the input and output(also known as "main shaft") shafts meet. Which is exactly where the 3rd & 4th hub assembly sits
Can you tell me why my '65 fairlane tranny wont even move with the rebuild? Leave the plugs in and it wont shift back and forth. Takr them out and everything is free. Plugs back in, nothing.
i have an 05 mustang with a stock transmission and I'm hearing this grinding going into gears. i currently don't have the time or money to fix this right now and all i want to know is if this is a thing i should fix asap or something i can fix by turning up the radio until i can afford If it does break its not the end of the world since I am going to swap it out for a more performance based one but like I said earlier I have no money and I am not getting on my knees for an extra $20
My car grinds from 4rth to 3rd when downshift even if I do it really slow or wait for a minute in neutral or double clutch. The only way to stop it from grinding is to go from 4th to 2nd and then 3rd , then its smooth. What do you think is the problem
Are there any other noises coming from the transmission? Or do you notice a difference between the 1st say 10 mins of driving compared to when its warmed up?

@@indy4030 did some research about this, also own a 2000 GTS 💀 it's a common issue and there was a revision where they replace 3 and 4 and their respective synchros. It gets rid of it fully but is expensive (400 some in parts only). If you don't do it you pretty much keep having to replace the synchros
I get that the ring grips due to friction but how does it perfectly line up??? Is that just a demonstration of the ideal? Is it the shape of the teeth that mean that the gear engagement can occur in any position as long as the correct friction is applied?

Bit it doesn't do that with any other gear. I try not to drive it but sometimes i gotta move around in it. What would you suggest? Is there a ballpark on how much a shop would charge to fix it?
I got a T45 that has been refurbished. It goes smoothly into reverse but sometimes it’s hard to get to come out. Assuming no issues with the clutch, could this be a shifter issue or an internal issue?😢 5th is smooth, 1-4 I feel there is a slight stop before going in. Maybe it needs more time to break in?

I'm referring to the principle of axial force being applied to the synchro in order to cause it to stop spinning due to friction by the conical shaft. Do all modern manual transmissions feature this conical design on the gears? I have the same problem with my 08 Civic Si. Most people claim that swapping the gear oil fixes the issue, but I suspect that worn synchros are the crux of the issue.
My zf5 has a hard time going into 2nd and reverse, like you gotta slam it into gear. Idk what causes that, and it's nothing to do with the clutch cause it's been like that for a couple years. But finally got it pulled out, going to have someone rebuild it

Unfortunately no, I mean the gear oil in a manual transmission does play a huge role in the friction between the brass and the steel. (different than automatic transmission fluid "ATF") and if it's old and broken down. It may attribute to the gears grinding once the transmission gets warmed up to operating temp.. But the principle is still the same, being the brass synchro has stretched beyond what It could once grip on the surface of that coned seat.
Still though, a good rule of thumb, is to check your gear oil level in your manual transmission. And be sure to add some if it's low. Or replace it all, like an oil change on your engine. They are are very different than an Automatic transmission and how they use and store the oil/fluid

If its only that gear then likely it is your synchro ring. (The brass ring in the video). I believe you have 6 speeds in that car correct? Does your 6th gear make any grinding noise? Reason I ask, is because it could be the shifter fork that slides between the 2 gears that may be broken. Also. There is not much "adjustment" you can do with the shifter it self unfortunately. Atleast that I have ever seen on a manual. Sorry

Hello, sorry such a late reply. Yes this is a rebuild on an 89' jeep wrangler . If you're grinding in that many gears, I'd be curious if your clutch is fully releasing to allow your transmission to shift. Is it consistently those same gears? Does your clutch pedal build pressure or resistance if you pump it, or does it feel the same ever time you depress? . Usually its true you'll feel or hear a grinding in all gears if the clutch isn't releasing fully. But this can be tricky to know sometimes with different driving habits and conditions.

The problem I’m having is my truck will grind going from 3rd to 4th and only if I shift quickly and it’s only ever in 4th no matter how fast I shift in any other gear and it does not do it when down shifting I can shift as fast as I want it’s only from 3rd to 4th but even if I have the Rpms up if I shift a little slower it won’t grind it’s a little bizarre I’ve been a mechanic for years and I’ve worked on my fair share of engines and transmissions even transfercases but this issue isn’t making much sense because it won’t always do it sometimes it will go into gear quickly just fine which is making me think the syncros in 4th are getting warn out but then again it’s only on an up shift never a down shift
Very interesting, I have 2 ideas as of this moment, doesn't mean correct, but 2 things I may suspect. 1. Glazing on the coned face on the back of the input shaft for 4th gear's synchro causing an inconsistent "grab" or friction for the brass synchro; 2. Potential play or slight "slop" from the input shafts pocket bearing where the nose of the output shaft sits for support at the front end of the tranny. Usually you would hear a bearing whine. But since 4th is so far away from the intermediate plate and depends upon that bearing to support the front end of the outshaft, and helps keep the output and input shafts aligned. I wonder if the counter forces from the vehicles wheels spinning the output shaft while coasting in neutral during your shift from 3 to 4 is making it difficult for the alignment of the 2 shafts. Since 4th gear is a 1:1 ratio meaning its literally linear transmission of power from input to output. Just a thought, but it helps to brainstorm. Hope it helps 👍🏽
@@BeauSchnapp yeah it’s a strange issue I did a little experiment too I put the truck in 3rd and let off the throttle and got back on and you can feel the jolt in 3rd gear which makes me believe the center bearing is worn since it doesn’t do it in any other gear and the shifting doesn’t feel sloppy I will say you can feel the bite in 1st 2nd 3rd it doesn’t grind or anything but it has a lot of bite I’m not sure it’s strange but to be fair I’ve had the truck a while it’s a 2004 Nissans frontier 2.4 with the 5speed Original motor and transmission I’ve maintained the truck really well but it’s up there in miles 230,000 so the transmission may just be showing it’s age I just haven’t had the ability to work on it much I’m going in for surgery on my hand this morning so I haven’t been able to do much but I appreciate some of your thoughts man

Wornout synchronizer. You can Double clutch when shifting to 3rd gear to prevent gear damage, but get that fix asap.

A thick/viscous gear oil could increase friction between synchro and cone? This might help speed the selector up to the right speed

No. Most car doesn't have synchronizer on reverse gear. Y need to be fully stop wait for a sec and shift to reverse.

How much would a job like this cost?
This cost me about $250 - $500 in parts. Every car and rebuild kit for a tranny is different though.

Reverse gear is usually straight cut, no synchro’s are used, so to shift into reverse your car must be stationary.
