If you have any Questions or comments just ask. Sorry for the noise in the background.
How hard would this be to fix at home? I have an 04 manual Celica and every time i shift into 3rd it grinds into place. I basically have to force it into 3rd. Bit it doesn't do that with any other gear. I try not to drive it but sometimes i gotta move around in it. What would you suggest? Is there a ballpark on how much a shop would charge to fix it?
Thanks bro it really helpful for me
The sync ring makes sure that the 3th gets to the same speed first which than enables them to mesh.
Best video I watch
awesomelly explained!
Is it a big issue if a synchro is missing one of the ending teeth
What happens if I don’t get this fixed? My car grinds in 1st gear unless I come to a complete stop and then switch to 1st.
Crystal clear
Can a synchro ring be built up with solder or punching it all over with a center punch?
Can you tell me why my '65 fairlane tranny wont even move with the rebuild? Leave the plugs in and it wont shift back and forth. Takr them out and everything is free. Plugs back in, nothing.
so what all causes this to happen
Your a god for explaining what is happening, been having problems with grinding especially on my 5th/overdrive gear on my 1997 jeep TJ 4.0l sport and now Ik what to expect when I pull it apart. I recommend this guy 100%!Thanks for the help!!!
excellent video many people have no idea or have never built a trans
I got a T45 that has been refurbished. It goes smoothly into reverse but sometimes it’s hard to get to come out. Assuming no issues with the clutch, could this be a shifter issue or an internal issue?😢 5th is smooth, 1-4 I feel there is a slight stop before going in. Maybe it needs more time to break in?
Do synchronizer rings supposed to last only a certain number of miles?
Thanks, I recently got a boxster and have had transmission grinding for several months. This helps explain!
1/2 way thru. Excellent...
What stop the blocking ring from turning to engage gear?
Its grinding because they not use to it in manual transmission 😂
I get that the ring grips due to friction but how does it perfectly line up??? Is that just a demonstration of the ideal? Is it the shape of the teeth that mean that the gear engagement can occur in any position as long as the correct friction is applied?
I was just watching Roaming Reckless and she was stranded somewhere on top of a mountain. You commented on her live offering to come help her. That was really nice of you! I never found out if she got help.
Howdy, yeah I had a feeling you may have been fellow follower of Maria! I haven't heard anything or got a response from her through IG either. I hope she is OK. And atleast safe.
Can't believe I just found you and your pup. I'm still laughing from when she jumped out of the boat and had her whole head and face covered in a green glob of seaweed! Hilarious! I'm so glad she's okay though.
Hahaha! Thank you! Her name is Pippa, but I call her Squeaks. She's seriously my best friend. But no surprise there, 😆. Dogs tend to have that effect on us. I love that she loves adventure though. So making memories like the ones in this video are precious moments 🙏🏼🙌🏽
I subscribed to you cause you offered to help roaming reckless and everyone in the comments were being d1cks to you! Fcuk em!
Very well explained!
3rd gear always grind
Explanation plain & simple thank you
How universal is this principle across other makes and models? I'm referring to the principle of axial force being applied to the synchro in order to cause it to stop spinning due to friction by the conical shaft. Do all modern manual transmissions feature this conical design on the gears? I have the same problem with my 08 Civic Si. Most people claim that swapping the gear oil fixes the issue, but I suspect that worn synchros are the crux of the issue.
A thick/viscous gear oil could increase friction between synchro and cone? This might help speed the selector up to the right speed
How do i fix this though? Do i rebuild or is it cheaper to just find a low mileage trans from a junkyard?
Good video with good explanation of how synchros function. Its worth noting why the synchro failed though.
Does this apply also when going from 2nd to 3rd?
super useful. thank you
Messed up my third gear when I blew my clutch and drove home on that scared final trip home. Replaced the clutch but 3rd always grinds, so now I just go straight to fourth. It’s an old Impreza so I guess going 50 in 2nd is still appropriate
Is that what happens when you don’t fix a grinding gear? My 1st gear grinds unless I switch it to first after coming to a complete stop. Is it okay if I leave it or will I end up blowing my clutch if it keeps grinding?
@@Faith-lr2xm leave it, all that might happen is first gear synchro gets completely worn down and skips out of gear. Then you would have to fix transmission but you likely have ten years of grinding before that happens
Man. Props to whoever invented this stuff 😂
i have an 05 mustang with a stock transmission and I'm hearing this grinding going into gears. i currently don't have the time or money to fix this right now and all i want to know is if this is a thing i should fix asap or something i can fix by turning up the radio until i can afford If it does break its not the end of the world since I am going to swap it out for a more performance based one but like I said earlier I have no money and I am not getting on my knees for an extra $20
Very helpful video sir. Currently studying this in uni and seeing the real stuff rather than an animation (which is very helful as well) is cool. Thank you for sharing
My 6 speed tremec will completely lock me out of gears at times when I'm speed shifting. What is the fix for that?
Very nice ly explained
I’ve owned my YJ for 2years now, I learned how to double clutch due to this 😂. But you just answered my question 😂
Anda what about if only happens in cool and not when the gesrbox IS warmed Up?
My zf5 has a hard time going into 2nd and reverse, like you gotta slam it into gear. Idk what causes that, and it's nothing to do with the clutch cause it's been like that for a couple years. But finally got it pulled out, going to have someone rebuild it
I'm having the issue that my 3rd is hard to gear into and when you actually do it it grinds, really annoying
@@channelemex_private570 same. My 94.5 usually grinds at third and doesn’t like reverse 🥲 did you fix yours?
Thanks for telling me my transmissions bad 😂
Can it be it ? If mine only grinds in reverse ?
No. Most car doesn't have synchronizer on reverse gear. Y need to be fully stop wait for a sec and shift to reverse.
Thank you so much for this. I now understand why my trans is grating.
My 6 speed grinds only on third gear. All my gears work properly and so does the clutch but when i shift to my third gear it always grinds. What could be the cause?????
Wornout synchronizer. You can Double clutch when shifting to 3rd gear to prevent gear damage, but get that fix asap.
Great explanation thank you for posting.
no mount of fluids flushes will make this grinding to away now will it? I'm reading some threads online and some say a quick fix for grinding is flushing out a quart here or there is enough to help mesh those rings???...
Unfortunately no, I mean the gear oil in a manual transmission does play a huge role in the friction between the brass and the steel. (different than automatic transmission fluid "ATF") and if it's old and broken down. It may attribute to the gears grinding once the transmission gets warmed up to operating temp.. But the principle is still the same, being the brass synchro has stretched beyond what It could once grip on the surface of that coned seat.
Still though, a good rule of thumb, is to check your gear oil level in your manual transmission. And be sure to add some if it's low. Or replace it all, like an oil change on your engine. They are are very different than an Automatic transmission and how they use and store the oil/fluid
Thanks for the info bro
Thanks Man love that close look👍
Please help, my car grinds when shifting in reverse and hard to shift in first sometimes, and my hard shifts into 3rd gear
Reverse gear is usually straight cut, no synchro’s are used, so to shift into reverse your car must be stationary.
i’m having this same issue did you ever figure out what was responsible?
@@indy4030 I added transmission fluid and it stopped hahah was a bit low tho
help in what way?. go see a mechanic. if u think by watching u tube you can fix a gearbox then I guess I can become heart surgeon by watching a video as well.
@@BoykieGovender I fixed it and rebuilt it, that was two years ago…. On my next build, Subaru still running every day lmfao
How does the synchronizer ring teeth line up perfectly with the gears teeth. Wouldn't there be a chance that the synchronizer ring teeth lines up between the gears teeth blocking the sliding clutch from meshing with the gears teeth?
same question
Yeah and that happens now and then, it’s why your owners manual will telll you that now than then the gears will grind or the clutch won’t engage, just push clutch in and try again
