No one will ever convince me that was Nick jumping and pumping his fist. That was Geraint Wyn-Davies congratulating himself on a good take; the camera happened to capture it; and someone decided that shot needed to be in the show for reasons that I assume are related to the consumption of white powder.

I liked this episode as a kid. I kinda took Nick's hallucinations as like... a literal vampire acid flashback. He probably did a lot of drugs, or fed on people who did, at woodstock. So instead of a normal flashback, he has an acid flashback.
I think the reason I liked it is... it's one of the very few flashbacks where the flashback story has a positive ending? Usually Nick is remembering some regret or trauma. This time he's like... damn, Woodstock was cool. I had a good time for a minute there.

  • @roderick8167

I've always assumed that Nick having all these hallucinations seeing happy people go on with their lives with family, friends and significant others is something he feels he can't and will never have because being an immortal vampire people will die and fade out of his life while he will continue on forever age after age but at the end of the episode Nick seeing Rebecca get free from her life as a rockstar gives Nick hope that one day he'll be free of his vampiric curse and then he can live a normal life among mortal society.

Thank you for helping other over-thinkers not feel so alone!

@@ssatvayeah I most likely over thought this whole episode but it felt likw the writers were trying to be deep in thai episode like they were trying to dig deeper into Nick's psychology and yeah maybe Nick did simply want to be a rockstar but not exactly a good coverup for a vampire but also he became a cop so who knows what this episode was trying to say

You know, I bet that this episode was written when the pilot was made, but the show hadn't yet been cast as it was.
Don't get me wrong here, I adore Geraint Wyn Davies' acting, he is legendary on the screen and stage. He has been a regular at the Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival for decades, and other FK actors have been in their plays too, do check out their channel if you want.
However it does seem that the rock music plot line, though, was made more for the person originally cast as Nick Knight, Rick Springfield.
...I'd say my dad likes his music, but my dad is more into folk storytelling stuff. And so am I. Give us some acoustic guitar and hammered dulcimer any day.

I didn't know about the pilot with Rick Springfield until I started digging deeper into the show after this review series kicked off. Some day I should give it a watch. It's probably here on UA-cam somewhere. But yeah, you raise an interesting point. This episode feels off in lots of ways. And that could be explained by being an early script from before the formula (or the casting) were properly ironed out.

I'm sorry, but an edgy musician writing a song about wanting to kill their fans just wouldn't be controversial. Even in the 90s when this show was made, it would have just blended in to the general melange of rock star weirdness. This episode came out a year after Nirvana released Nevermind, and around the same time "R*** Me" was released ... which, by the way, makes Rebecca's whole shtick seem hilariously outdated even for the time. She would have been treated as seriously as WInger was by that point. Grunge and Punk bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Bad Religion were exploding in popularity, and genuine metal acts like Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax had been given greatly expanded exposure on MTV and radio. Rebecca's toothless hair metal shtick would have seemed like a sad joke, with or without the yawn-inducing "Fan Kill" stunt -- a desperate Nelson or White Lion clone that came 10 years too late.
I dunno, maybe things were different in Canada. Did y''all get Nirvana on MuchMusic?

    • @CT_Phipps
      @CT_Phipps 7 місяців тому +2

I mean this is the beginning of Grunge and end of the Motley Crue hair metal era. This is aired in 1992 as you say but was FILMED in 1991 when Nirvana got big. So, literally probably the last year that Rebecca could be popular and probably is only popular with her own existing fans who didn't just automatically stop listening to hair metal. So she got out while the getting was good. Besides, even in-universe, her fans are acting like "Fan Kill" is just a goofy stunt as we see when interviewed.
The big secret of the episode is, no, Rebecca is dead serious and really wishes she could kill them all.

Nirvana made that cock-rock stuff look old fashioned, but it was still popular. There are still plenty of hair metal bands from that period around today. R*** Me was on In Utero, so came out in late 1993, and it was extremely controversial at the time. It was refused airplay and some stores wouldn't stock it.

This episode made me think of the Fromage special MuchMusic used to run every year for the cheesiest music videos. Not just the fake music video. The entire episode. Probably the weakest of the fifteen or so I’ve seen so far.

Some of the lists seem to skip the real number 11, putting 12 there instead. See the comments on Mildred's video about number 11 for more info.

I like how all early 90s television is evocative & copycatting what other popular film & media were doing at the time. For instance this episode is clearly riffing off of Basic Instinct. I've been rewatching The X-Files & in the first 2 seasons every episode looks & feels like an homage to another popular film of the time, down to the editing
