Sorry for being this kind of nerd, but Olivia Chow is Toronto's third female mayor. June Rowlands (1991-1994) and Barbara Hall (1994-1997). During Forever Knight's entire run, only women were mayor of the city. Sort of a neat little factoid.
Feels like this one worked backwards from the idea of Nick testifying in the HUAC in a flashback and wasn't able to think of anything interesting to do with it + was scared of actually being political.
Liike if 50s Nick was friends with a guy who was actually a communist and had his life destroyed, maybe if he had to make a choice between throwing that guy under the bus and having his vampirism exposed, etc. And if the modern thing was about a similar politically-driven moral panic, it would work, but instead it's just a generic mayoral race between two boring people and the message is a vague 'don't let politics cloud your judgement' thing.

This feels like one of those scenarios where 90s writers in Canada wanted to a void real-world political commentary out of fear of drawing bad attention to their network. The Forever Knight team sketch politics so broadly and stupidly that what we get show that "liberals" (i.e. mealy-mouthed moderates) are weak and foolish and compromised by their commitment to Fairness while "conservatives" (i.e. blowhard reactionaries) are boorish and stupid and tactless. No one is offended! It's the CENTRIST WAY. Imagine how much better this show would be if it actually committed to the issues. "The Homeless situation" would involve cuts to police services to fund new relief stimulus programs (and put at risk the jobs of our cast), but those programs are untested and put a cute veneer of "we care!" that actually fails to get at the root problem of homelessness. Nevermind Nick being a communist (or hell, just a long-lived being who sees how human societies fail to address the roots of social issues and are instead caught up in petty power struggles) would have been a MUCH more interesting take. This episode could be set-up for future episodes (Schenke goes on about how the new mayor kicks ass and makes his home increase in value because of future investment potential mayor dickwheat gets involved with the Wrong Sort and Nick has to come to the rescue, LaCroix get an opportunity to swan in and opine melancholy about the nature of kings and peasants, etc)...but instead we get this self-contained drivel. I often complain about how ewvery show nowadays tries to Build A Story Arc and doesn't get good until 5 episodes in...but this reminds me of what we had in the 90s, and why some of use first cheered when TV writers remembered that Story Arcs Are Good.....because self-contained shit is STILL shit.
All amazing points, I almost want to travel in time to leave even only your 2nd paragraph on the desk of this episode's writer. As if Schanke would even have to be concerned about his home's value. In one ep, but I forget which, they show what is supposed to be the front of Schanke's house. It's a 2K (ish) sq ft single family on its own plot, less than 10 miles from big city Toronto if my memory serves. Would love the chance to hear a character roast him over having that as a primary concern, rather than any more way more important matter.
I think a lot of shows prior to this decade and the last had to have so many self-contained episodes because more frequently people would drop into enjoying a show with zero prior knowledge of it, anywhere in the middle of the season. Now shows can do okay on one consistent fan base subscribing to the streaming service and watching every episode (sometimes more than once), and maybe buying merch. But even as recently as the 90s and the decade after they had to get however many viewers they could each week, because it would only be shown at one fixed point in the day. So it had to be understandable to the newbs and slow enough to pick up the details on the first and only time watching, but engaging enough to keep people watching. Which of course led to more general/bland storylines, especially since they'd have to appeal to every person in the household watching at the same time. If you've got a politically mixed household, for example, then if your show gets either too conservative or liberal someone is gonna turn the channel. Back then, the viewers' attention was the primary product the studios were selling to advertisers, so they needed to get people watching all at the same time, for as long of the time as possible. Not saying that this is new to you, per se, but if there are folks reading these comments who simply don't remember or weren't alive then, it might help explain why shows of the past were kinda bland and explained themselves constantly and why there were so. many. episodes.
No mildread, if there are budgetary issues they should obviously mirrow the scenes with the penguins, like on the one side a penguin quacks some bs and on the other side a penguin quacks some bullshit but the clock in the baground is unnerving to look at.

The pro-monarchy side were called the whites (short for White Army) and the revolutionaries were called the reds (short for Workers' and Peasants' Red Army). The name stuck in America long enough to reach the Cold War, and then it ended up being used in a lot of American movies and shows, so the terminology is still recognizable to a lot of Americans today, and probably a decent number of other countries in the Anglosphere would be familiar with it.
