Yeah I also thought that take was weird. Like nearly every pre-modern civilization has those features. 5:41 Small correction, it wasn't the Nords who yoinked gods from the Imperial pantheon and put them into their own, but rather the Imperials who yoinked gods from the Nordic pantheon and put them into their own. This is because the Imperial pantheon exists somewhat as a consolidation of the older Nordic and Aldmeri pantheons. Edit: I see now that someone else has already mentioned this 😅
As a Scandinavian I always play as a Nord but I never side with the Stormcloaks. Love Khajiit and Orc as well depending on what kind of gameplay I fancy.
Great video. I just hate how Khajits and Argonians wear SHOES like humans. In Morrowind they didn't as their feet had different shape. I feel like Khajits and Argonians have been castrated in Skyrim compared to Morrowind where they were significantly more unique.
I played a khajit in oblivion (second time) because I could never hack playing them in morrowind because I’m too impatient to play without the boots of blinding speed 😂
Guild Wars 2 did it better imo: they had specific boot designs for charr and asura, with the charr being the "beasts", their boots are more like cover plates than full enclosures
Dunno why everyone like argonians. Their bonuses are almost all null since you can get vampirism or lycanthropy to get disease immunity and any helm for underwater breathing. Only thing they get is aesthetic.
7:14 lol I hate this so much. Who says medieval Arabians didn't prioritize honor in combat or bloodlines? Arabs were tribal and sultans wouldn't just engage swordplay duels casually. Its so frustrating how obsessed westerners are with a caricature of Samurais that they negate other cultures out of ignorance
Nahh they're barbaric, even today who tf cuts off the hands of thieves and who beheads people for killing another. The rule "an eye for an eye" is an old and barbaric tradition/law.
“Imperials are the jack of all trades and master of none race” They are masters of restoration magic for what it’s worth. Imperials aren’t noticed when talking about magical power but they excel in the school of magic that keeps their friends alive. The Empire has repeatedly conquered Tamriel because Imperials have no equal in teamwork. They’re a good race to pick if you want to be a paladin.
Personally, I've always played as a Khajiit. Not just for the rarity factor, but also because they're a true neutral Dragonborn, both morally and skill-wise. If you're not using unarmed, all you have left is Night Eye, a small, yet nice skill. You have no upsides or downsides. You're average height, so your movement speed is neutral. Almost completely empty, yet limitless possibilities.
Almost all my play throughs were khajiit. They should have better skills though. Like reduced damage from falling, which is already a heavy armor perk. We all know cats land on their feet, and there's even a story in one book of a young khajiit giving tips to a dark elf on it. Also, same as the vampire night eye type of spell in Oblivion, the khajiit ability should have a short range detect life effect. Cat senses are way better than human senses, so it fits and still wouldn't be close to being op as the orc ability.
I was SHOCKED that Altmer was ranked so low. Useful ability and they get an extra 50 points in magic. Magic builds aren’t for everyone, but second lowest in the rankings feels plain wrong.
It's hilarious seeing the former slavers cry about not being catered to despite the fact the only reason they're allowed in Windhelm to begin with is because the Nords let them in as refugees. Only for them to act against the interests of the people that granted them asylum.
@@theghostofthomasjenkins9643 maybe the nords should stop being such stubborn apes and realize that if they united with the empire, they could overthrow the Thalmor 😂
I’ve been playing Daggerfall as an Argonian. The number of times I’ve been called stupid or dumb by npcs because I’m playing Argonian is numerous. Argonian are certainly perceived as just being mindless lizard men by most people in the earlier titles.
Very much a non-gameplay/strategy list, which was cool and not what I expected. Here's my ranking, which I base ONLY on gameplay: #10-8: Wood elf, Imperial, and Khajit: No useful abilites, daily powers, or passives. #7 Dark elf: Resist fire is very useful, though not as applicable as magick resist. Still has lots of applications. #6 Redguard: Their daily power lets them regen stamina quickly, which is fairly useful. Their posion resist is negligable. #5 Nord: Frost resitance is useful because frost is very common. All undead, necromancers, frost dragons, frostbite spiders, and so on will be resisted by their passive. It's not as applicable as magic resistance, but nothing to scoff at. #4 Argonian: Having access to hitskin is extremely useful and always applicable in any combat situation. Skyrim has faceroll, tank and heal combat - and this ability fits perfectly in that zone. #3 Orcs: Berserker rage makes you take half damage and deal double damage, but only psychical damage, no magic. This ability works for melee as well as archery, making it the best archer or dual weilding sword race. #2 High Elves: They get 150 magicka, which is a full 5 levels worth of stats that no other race can, at any level, match. This ability is only useless if you NEVER use any magic at all. On top of that their daily power is insane for any mage. #1 Bretons: magic resiatnce is bar none the best ability in the game and it's on a PASSIVE.
eh, orc active ability is way to strong to sleep on, at least in skyrim. Argonian's are very balanced one and very good too, honestly dont see myself playing a breton, the magic resist just is not that good in skyrim when you can gain absorb magic so easily.
Counter argument: while the magic resistance is good in the beginning, every character can reach 100% magic immunity or close, making the magic resistance useless. Orcs for the win!
The ACTUAL top 10 races in Skyrim (based on optimization only): First thing to remember is that if you hyper-optimize your character in Skyrim, then you always go for a Vampire Necromage, for the 100% magic absorption and a boost to ALL ENCHANTMENTS. Which means that any race that offers resistances (to magic, elements, poison or disease) is automatically worse, since those features are completely worthless if you're a Vampire Necromage. 1) Altmer - best race. 50 extra magika, fastest running speed in the game, racial that lets you fully regen magika quickly, and a cool roleplaying moment during Diplomatic Immunity if you're into that. 2) Orc - an absolutely broken Berzerker Rage, and an ability to enter orc strongholds, both of which are very nice. Would have been the best race if not for the Altmer running speed, because you run a lot more in the game than you get to use Brezerker. 3) Khajiit - claws for unarmed striking, which is a unique feature. Of course, their Nightvision power is useless, but the claws make Khajiit the only viable choice for an unarmed build, which places them higher. 4) Imperial - an absolutely hilariously broken Voice of the Emperor ability that lets you cheese unbeatable encounters, plus some extra gold. 5) Argonian - disease resistance and waterbreathing are both useless to a V. Necromage, but the racial that regens HP quickly is very powerful. 6) Nord - Battlecry is a whole lot less powerful than Voice of the Emperor, but it is still a mildly useful crowd control effect to have in your arsenal, for Kaarstag if nothing else. 7) Dunmer - their fire damage racial doesn't really deal enough to write home about but they are less useless than everyone below them. 8) Redguard - stamina is completely worthless in Skyrim, and so is the ability to regenerate it quickly, but Redguards are still better than the two races below them 9) Bosmer - all of their abilities are completely worthless to a V. Necromage, and their Command Animal can be replicated with a shout, not to mention one of the lowest running speeds in the game. 10) Breton - both magic resistance and temporary extra magic absorbtion are useless to a V. Necromage, and Bretons have one of the lowest running speeds in the game to boot. Of course, if you aren't fully optimizing, then the list would be in different order - for instance, Bretons suddenly become the best race in the game if you for some reason aren't playing Vampire Necromage.
I remember how much fun I had playing as an Orc, quite a few years ago. The Beserk power felt so much stronger than any other starting power. Maybe could come close to it only the Breton power of absorbing magic attacks, which was another insanely powerful feature to have on command, especially against bosses that overwhelmed you with their spells.
Orc, Breton, and Argonian arguably have the best racial boons due to being universally useful and staying relevant even at higher levels (temporary steroids, passive magic resistance, and laughing at the concept of drowning). Almost everyone else has very situational passives or extremely niche abilities that are so niche that they end up forgotten from sheer irrelevancy. I say "almost" because Altmer are really good for playing as a mage, albeit their passives are useless for non-mage setups.
@@RogueRanks Clarifications: Bosmer can eat plants and fruits BUT they can't harvest them or eat harvested plants that means that the fruits need to drop from the trees.
Considering how many things use frost based spells and will slow you down while backing up makes Nord better because of the resistance Halfling the stamina and health drain. For a warrior in the frozen north bumps it up to #2 or even #1 for me.
I just realized my two favorite races both are mix of Middle Eastern and Japanese culture.. dark elves are mix of Persian and Japanese and redguards mix of arabian and Japanese.
In Skyrim the most useful race to play as is the khajit with their night vision. You can use it constantly. It’s not just a once a day thing. So helpful for finding stuff and general stealth. Water breathing you can learn and enchant into things but night vision? That’s something only a khajit character can do. The lore on them is very interesting too.
My first skyrim character was an Orc battlemage named Klarrg. I roleplayed him being constantly high on Skyrim's various mushrooms and poisonous plants. He was really fun to play even though I barely did the main story at all, focusing more on the mage academy questline
You kinda got the Nord pantheon backwards. Alessia basically retconned the Nord gods and hybridized them with the Altmer gods to create a syncratic religion for the new empire. All the religions of Tamriel basically originate from the same monomyth(except for the Argonians), but are interpreted differently based on whether or not the cultures philosophy is Anuic or Padomaic.
Fun fact: The Hist (sentient trees worshipped by the Argonians) are actually dimension travellers from a previous Kalpa (universe-cycle), basically 4D tree gods
I'm so used to seeing people put Argonians near the bottom of the list in these types of videos so it was nice to see a fellow Argonian fan giving them the respect they deserve😂
I'm consistantly confused how the people of Skyrim are so easily able to tell what race my character is when Imperials, Bretons and Nords look so human comparitively. Maybe I'm missing something. At least with the elves, there's some sort of tell, and there's no mistaking a khajit, and orc or an argonian
Imperials usually have darker features than Nords, darker skin, hair, eyes, etc. Nords look more, well, Nordic. And Bretons, iirc, are supposed to have pointed ears and other elven features. Skyrim doesn't convey this, but lore wise that's why they stand out.
@@CaptainEffortHeight can be a factor. I think Bretons are the shortest, then Imperials, and Nords the tallest. Their names can be a giveaway too. Nords obviously have Scandinavian sounding names, Imperials are Latin, and Breton are French inspired.
Nords are taller then the others. But I can only say who is Breton or imperial by the name. Bretons have frensh names and the imperials has old Roman names
Compare NPCs then: Nord Male: Ulfric, Balgruff Nord Female: Aela, Serana, Moll the Lioness (The Stormcloaks are mostly Nords, as is the Eastern cities. You hear the accent the sweet roll guards use, those are Nords. Tall, hair ranges from blonde to deep brown with a fair complexion, strong frame and build.) Breton Male: Belethor, Mercer Frey Breton Female: Delphine, Sybille Stentor (The Forsworn are all Bretons, as is most of Markarth. You hear the Courier's accent or that Wesr Coast American bland twang? Breton. Mid height, deep blonde to brown with more elvish skin tones.) Imperial Male: Tulius, Cicero, Dexion Imperial Female: Vittoria Vici, Camilla Valerius (They have a surname that's not Nordic? Imperial. They sound Latin/ Roman? Imperial. They're shorter and a bit more swarthy? Imperial.)
I love how one of the biggest sticking points against the Stormcloaks is that they're racist. When it comes to Tamriel, that's just the pot calling the kettle black.
My first ever Legendary playthrough was on the xbox 360 with the argonian race, hitskin came in handy for a lot of situations. My second was with was with Kahjiit, I just felt like playing the cat Maybe for my third I'll try a Dunmer or Nord playthrough but unlike the last two which I relied on Sword and shield, I'll try more of a spellsword playthrough where I'll rely on conjuration and destruction magic with my sword being the back up weapon.
You didn't mention the part about orcs being elves. All races in Tamriel with "mer" in their race name are considered elves. Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, Dwemer, Falmer, and Orsimer. Yes, even the dwarves are considered elves in Tamriel.
Playing morrowind made me love the dunmer and almost replacing argonians as number one, but playing eso just made me love the argonians even more, they are some of the most caring people in tamriel, sacrificing themselves for others and such. Also the added benefit of playing an argonians means you will experience racism.
Love this list and I generally agree with everything you had to say here. My only disagreement is on the placement of high elves. Lore wise I’d place them a little higher just cause I like the antagonistic role they’ve come to take on in the war with the empire, and gameplay wise, if you’re playing a mage in Skyrim, realistically you can play any race, but the utterly absurd starting advantage you get as a high elf is crazy. Love the 50 bonus magicka and highborn racial ability. Great video though, very thoughtful and entertaining, and it’s clear you care a lot about the elder scrolls world and are very knowledgeable on its inhabitants
Yeah... Can't disagree, Dark Elves are the best in Elder Scrolls. If I ever play another one of those games I might have to just straight up rip off Drizzt.
High elf and Breton are my literal favorites. Hear me out, I fking love roleplaying as a Mage. High elfs and Bretons are the best for that role. (Note: High elfs have a great lore too, like that time they literally made them moons disappear, bet the khajiits are scared as shit now XD)

@@shadowborn1456 Yes. The Altmer are truly superior, Nords are fools who believe magic is weak. Your description of redguard ancestry resembling Japan is wild, since word for word you were also describing old Arabic culture.
The Yokudans were practically literal 1:1 black samurai, distinct from Arabian/North African. It's a blend of the two.
Yeah I also thought that take was weird. Like nearly every pre-modern civilization has those features. Clergy and religious warriors, noble families and bloodlines, cultural norms that dictate parts of life such as an honor code or social etiquette etc… Not to be disrespectful but these characteristics aren’t unique to Japan lol almost every settled culture in Asia and Europe had a structure that strongly resembled that description. I don’t know how he made the connection to Japan lol
I love making Argonian assassins. Super brightly colored, making use of invisibility potions to approach targets, revealing themselves for a flashy public execution, then using histskin and waterbreathing for an escape that leaves witnesses with a copper-like taste of powerlessness in their mouths.
I always thought making a reals swamp puppy alchemy argonian salt water crocodile would be a fun build but playing a altmer blood mage is just too fun
Your top two picks are literally the same as me. I love the dark elf. I’ve become a dark god with that races help and it’s just genuinely my favorite race
You have good taste
@@RogueRanks Weird request but you should rank the animations for each skill in the skill tree menu. Like a lockpick is 10/10 because the animation fits around the stars and perk progression really good. But a shield is like a 6/10 because the bottom of the shield doesn't fit into the perks. and like conjuration is 0/10 because the animation is flipped upsidedown.
My first Skyrim character was a dark elf she turned into a vampire tho
Dark god????
What's interesting about Redguard lore is they came from a different timeline where Alduin actually won & the dragonborn died
1:46 what? What you yapping about bro
Man altmer have to be the top three
I stand by it
The highborn ability is so overpowered there is no comparison trying to mage on other classes have you even played Skyrim
Edit: I see now that someone else has already mentioned this 😅

...Not familiar with this "Skyrim" though.
Great video. I just hate how Khajits and Argonians wear SHOES like humans. In Morrowind they didn't as their feet had different shape. I feel like Khajits and Argonians have been castrated in Skyrim compared to Morrowind where they were significantly more unique.
Agreed, they took way too much of the”beast” out of the beast races
I played a khajit in oblivion (second time) because I could never hack playing them in morrowind because I’m too impatient to play without the boots of blinding speed 😂
Guild Wars 2 did it better imo: they had specific boot designs for charr and asura, with the charr being the "beasts", their boots are more like cover plates than full enclosures
I play as an argonian a lot, because of the useful traits that they have, especially when it comes to underwater exploration
Dunno why everyone like argonians. Their bonuses are almost all null since you can get vampirism or lycanthropy to get disease immunity and any helm for underwater breathing.
Only thing they get is aesthetic.
@@sabnock31 for the water breathing part, that would be a waste of an equipment slot if you were wanting to have two enchantments done to be stronger

“Imperials are the jack of all trades and master of none race”
They are masters of restoration magic for what it’s worth.
All are s tier because they have their use depending on the character and style you wanna play.
The best answer right here
@@RogueRanks I liked your video just found the concept of the video really funny.
I was SHOCKED that Altmer was ranked so low. Useful ability and they get an extra 50 points in magic. Magic builds aren’t for everyone, but second lowest in the rankings feels plain wrong.
Good points, I definitely wasn’t being very objective here 😂
get these piss elves outta here
They are also just clearly superior to other races as the thalmors show by wearing the coolest armor in the civil war
One of the reasons I always play Stormcloak is because it’s funny seeing the Dunmer having only a slight taste of their own medicine
It's hilarious seeing the former slavers cry about not being catered to despite the fact the only reason they're allowed in Windhelm to begin with is because the Nords let them in as refugees. Only for them to act against the interests of the people that granted them asylum.
Dunmer till I die 🔥 best vampire race. Also fuck Ulfric he can catch these hands for how he treats my dark brethren

There is a lot more than could be mentioned from game to game but also lore that make each race more interesting. But it was still a solid video
I’ve been playing Daggerfall as an Argonian. The number of times I’ve been called stupid or dumb by npcs because I’m playing Argonian is numerous. Argonian are certainly perceived as just being mindless lizard men by most people in the earlier titles.
The dunmer are obviously the superior race
The nords are better because they're capable of more racism
Very much a non-gameplay/strategy list, which was cool and not what I expected. Here's my ranking, which I base ONLY on gameplay:
#10-8: Wood elf, Imperial, and Khajit: No useful abilites, daily powers, or passives.
Yes I realize I learned much more into the vibes and lore of each. Great breakdown of each race! Bretons are crazy good
High Elves and Bretons are my "go to." In almost 13 years I don't think I've ever played as a Wood Elf, Nord, or Argonian.
In the nicest way possible, I hate you. I refuse to play high elves over argonians, orcs, dark elves or nords
eh, orc active ability is way to strong to sleep on, at least in skyrim.
Alright now do every American race ranked from worst to best

Dude... Asians would come out on top
The ACTUAL top 10 races in Skyrim (based on optimization only):
First thing to remember is that if you hyper-optimize your character in Skyrim, then you always go for a Vampire Necromage, for the 100% magic absorption and a boost to ALL ENCHANTMENTS.
8) Redguard - stamina is completely worthless in Skyrim, and so is the ability to regenerate it quickly, but Redguards are still better than the two races below them
9) Bosmer - all of their abilities are completely worthless to a V.
I think the Bosmer can eat plants just not the plants grown in thier homeland
Really? Maybe it’s that Green Pact Bosmer just don’t leave the Valenwood much
@@RogueRanks Clarifications: Bosmer can eat plants and fruits BUT they can't harvest them or eat harvested plants that means that the fruits need to drop from the trees.
Yea Auri Says so, The Green ONLY applies to Valenwood So everywhere else is free to do whatever

Seems like you definitely know what you're talking about.. When it's comes to race..
I've subbed..
The Dunmer Memri TV memes are why they will forever be my favourites

Every single time it's a Breton. I like to summon things while hiding in heavy armor behind a shield.
You may have convinced me…
I still hope that we find a long hidden colony of dwemer someday.
I would love that but also love the idea of keeping them mysterious and gone.
Both sad and fascinating that the only dwemer we see are the guy who got corprus and several ghosts in Morrowind.
Hey, but i loved this video regardless and i subscribed. Really good stuff. 🤘✌️👍
This video made me subscribe I love it
My first skyrim character was an Orc battlemage named Klarrg. I roleplayed him being constantly high on Skyrim's various mushrooms and poisonous plants. He was really fun to play even though I barely did the main story at all, focusing more on the mage academy questline
Having Imperials so high and Bosmer so low is unforgivable.
Thanks for the insight! I didn't know my lore as well as I thought
redguards are also very different because they aren't originally from the world of tamriel. yeah, it's weird.
@@CyranofromBergerac Good point, and I'm sure accents play a part too
Nords are taller then the others. But I can only say who is Breton or imperial by the name. Bretons have frensh names and the imperials has old Roman names
Compare NPCs then:
Nord Male: Ulfric, Balgruff
Nord Female: Aela, Serana, Moll the Lioness
(The Stormcloaks are mostly Nords, as is the Eastern cities. You hear the accent the sweet roll guards use, those are Nords. Tall, hair ranges from blonde to deep brown with a fair complexion, strong frame and build.)
Breton Male: Belethor, Mercer Frey
Breton Female: Delphine, Sybille Stentor
(The Forsworn are all Bretons, as is most of Markarth. You hear the Courier's accent or that Wesr Coast American bland twang? Breton. Mid height, deep blonde to brown with more elvish skin tones.)
Imperial Male: Tulius, Cicero, Dexion
Imperial Female: Vittoria Vici, Camilla Valerius
(They have a surname that's not Nordic? Imperial. They sound Latin/ Roman? Imperial. They're shorter and a bit more swarthy? Imperial.)

You didn't mention the part about orcs being elves. All races in Tamriel with "mer" in their race name are considered elves. Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, Dwemer, Falmer, and Orsimer. Yes, even the dwarves are considered elves in Tamriel.

Also the added benefit of playing an argonians means you will experience racism.
Tool bad, Breton's are the most superior race in Skyrim
