Thank you so much for this video. It’s like you read my mind. I’ve put a side teaching for a while and started taking classes again to stay up to date in my field since I was under a lot of stress having too much groups to teach and somehow I was feeling I was just not enjoying teaching anymore, and I even thought I had chosen the incorrect career, but now that I’m not teaching I miss it and think I just needed to feel more confident, less work and have clear objectives in my lessons, it was just too much work in a journey. Teachers here in Mexico don’t get well paid in private schools, so I ended working giving private lessons instead, and this also helped me a lot to reduce stress. Thank you very much for your tips!

Why did I miss this video! Thank you!! I must acknowledge that I received an award for being creative last session and it happened just after following your channel. This pandemic brought me to your channel and taught and showed me the right way.
I have completed my degree and now I am going to become a teacher in school.but I don't have confidence of how to teach students because even in my University period I can't give presentation my body start shaking and everything which I want to deliver I forget. I don't know how I will teach to students😥😥
Hi Saba. Honestly, you're going to have to change very quickly. If you cannot speak to your peers, much less your students who you need to guide, teaching is going to be very difficult for you. Fortunately I believe that nobody is inherently shy and that everyone can become whatever they wish to be. For you, you have a very short time to change from a shy, awkward person to someone with strength and charisma... so you'll have to cheat. In time you can practice to become a confident person step by step, by taking on increasingly more difficult challenges. But you don't have time. I want you to start brainwashing yourself. Think of the most powerful person or a great teacher that you know. What does that person look like? What is their body language? How do they speak? When they come into a room, how do they act? I want you to start acting like that person. If you are in a situation where you feel uncomfortable, what would that person do? How would they act and say? Do that! If you have to give a presentation, take a deep breathe, smile and imagine it is not you, but the person saying those words. Wouldn't they feel ashamed if they started shaking. So embarrassing... So instead speak louder than ever. Lock eyes with people as you talk and smile. Every night before bed tell yourself. I am that person. I am that confident. I can handle everything life throws at me. By using that person and a shield you should act and teach more confidently. Continue doing this until you do things without even imagining it. At that time you will realize that you have become the strongest version of yourself. But until then... cheat!
@@sabaiman8565 I'm also like this, and what helped me at first was to try to think beforehand of everything that I needed to say, even writing it down, and practicing it, like the most common responses to the most common questions, so then I wouldn't be caught by surprise, and I wouldn't lose my nerve.
I teach adult ESL classes (Literacy and spoken English) and the hours are 930 am until 3pm. That is a really long day. I plan lessons with activities, videos etc based on a topic. I often feel i have not got the perfect timing to stretch the lesson over those hours. Do you have tips for this kind of lengthy duration of teaching ESL?
Having many activities in tool box and very careful, meticulous planning and clear structure prevent many issues. If kids know what is expected and the activities are structured thoroughly, it is easier to prevent problems. The issue is students do not want to be in school because they have horrible parents. Good luck!
@@etacude Hey Eric, I'd loove if you could talk about where you were in the beggining aka what it was like for you when you began teaching; your obstacles and how you overcame them. It's not everyday you come across someone such as yourself who has such expertise in his field👨🏫🥇🎉It's nice to witness someone else's growth especially when you're at a low place yourself. ☺ I am going to join your FB group for teacher support, soon. I have quite the plethora of horrible experiences 😂🤣. Anyways, another topic I'd love to learn about is an example of your lesson planning, if possible. How do you take learners through the lesson (warmers, presentation, production etc). For example a lesson in Eng Lit. I really feel overwhelmed about lesson planning and sometimes I will take a weekend just to plan one short lesson. 🙈 Thanks so much Xx
What a wonderful reply! 😃 I'll make that the topic for this Sunday's livestream. Since it's almost the new year I'll look back at my experience as a teacher, the difficulties and successes I have had and also then look towards where I want to be in the future. There have been a few people asking about lesson planning so I'll definitely do a BIG video on it probably by February. I look forward to sharing some ideas that might help because I know how it feels when we struggle in class. That feeling of drowning in the work, classroom management and mental stress teaching takes on us. Bushra thank you for your support and I hope to make some videos that can help you be a better teacher. 😍

@@idurardjurdjura8368 It's very important for the students to know what is expected of them and to prepare them for the semester ahead. I would share the main points, assessments and dates with them, but don't go too much into specifics otherwise you will overwhelm or bore them.

@@sallysmile1053 And I'll work hard to make good content! The next video is about reading activities to use in class. I think it has some helpful ideas for adults too. :)
I was listening to you talking about reaction and I thought: if a student tries to get the teacher's attention (for whatever reason) and the teacher doesn't give it to them, wouldn't it be bad for the student-teacher relationship? As in "Oh, miss Smith's ignoring me, so I'll ignore her!", for example
Hi Lilia, good question. There's a difference between responding to a student's legitimate question and giving them attention and care, and a student who pushes you for a reaction. You can feel it in your gut, if a student asks for help and you know it's because they require assistance, it feels good. If a student is abusing their privilege of asking you questions or provoking reactions... you'll feel uneasy or upset. Follow your instinct and don't let learners mess with you just to shoft the power dinamic in their favor. I hope you understand. 😄
Thank you so much. You are one of the best teachers out there, you helped me very much with my English. please more videos! and I wanted to ask, if you could add English subs to your videos. again, thank you so much.
Hi Pam, because you asked so nicely I'll start to add English subtitles to popular videos. 😆 Recently I've only made Activity videos but soon I will post more about confidence and teaching in general. 😃 Thank you so much for your support!
Ahhh, I just found your channel now! I hope I did find you earlier. Thank you for these amazing tips for becoming the best teachers we can be! I learned a lot from this video, it summarized well the attributes of a good teacher. One of the tips that I value most is the reason why I want to become a confident teacher. It is because I want to give it to myself and reflect it to my students. As teachers, we are the best instructional aid that the students have! Thank you again!
I've been working as a teacher since October (last year) and I'm only 19 years old so this is very helpful. Thank you very much! I had seen a recoding of a recent class and I was reacting to one of a student's story, i definitely needed your advice. I'm looking forward to hearing more from you!
Good idea recording yourself, Melissa. That way you can see your errors and what to work on. I am busy creating a video that I think will help a lot of teachers with classroom management. I'll release it in 2 or 3 weeks. Good luck with your classes! 👍😃
Hi Meenal! Good question, it must be scary having big, stupid boys towering above you. (I know this because I was a big, stupid boy once. lol) Remember, they are more afraid of you than you are of them. They will give you space. Your job is to claim your space. Wherever you stand, a radius around is, is your zone. When you stand there you are impenetrable. - What do I mean by that? If you stand in front of the class, a meter around you, don't let anyone into your personal space unless you allow it. You are the master of that space. Also, whenever you stand in that spot in front of the class, you are not Meenal... You are the master of that class and your word is law. Even if you do not believe it, practice it and make it feel real. Over time you will feel natural confidence whenever you are standing in front of class. I hope it makes sense. Here is another video I did on teacher body language. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/bMl0UwDNkuw/v-deo.html
Thank you for your nice ideas and support. I really value the following tips as not to react but respond and embrace criticism but not negativity. I also find it useful to ask my students to have a book to read in case ... Regards, Ülle
Thank you for your kind words Elsa! Teacher mindset is important, but I'll also do videos on teaching skills. What is something you have trouble with in your class?
@@etacude my biggest difficulty it has been my lack of confidence. I've always been so demanding with myself that I even think I should know all the subjects and shouldn't study or plan my classes.
I'm actually so happy to hear that you are pushing yourself so hard to be a good teacher. Just remember, give yourself permission to make mistakes. You've got this idea that you have to be perfect, when in fact none of us are. So the next time you don't know the answer to a question, just tell the students: "Sorry, I'm not sure what the answer is. Let me look it up later and I'll get back to you tomorrow." Be okay with not being perfect :)
@@etacude Thank you so much!! Your words are really important to me. In fact, your videos have helped me a lot. Every teacher has had those feelings. There are some tough classes with difficult students and you got thrown into the deep end. Just remember that it will get easier. - Or rather, you will become stronger. On this channel I try to share some ideas and techniques that may help, but ultimately you have to become stronger to deal with the problems students give you. Here are 2 of my videos I would like to suggest if you haven't watched them yet: First Day of Class - ua-cam.com/video/elsMvsGoBsE/v-deo.html Classroom Rules ua-cam.com/video/u_XktSMKaNM/v-deo.html I hope these help and good luck with your classes. Whether you quit or not is up to you, just know that you have the support and understanding of millions of teachers that have been where you were before.
They need you to be confident. Just try and share your knowledge in a basic way and believe that it will be good enough. Soon you'll pick up the skills as you gain more experience. 😃👍
thank you Eric, great info! I would like to understand more about consequences for not following the rules explained by the teacher in the first class. What consequences do you deem appropriate for which age? Can you make examples of these consequences, say 7 or 8 graders. Would you choose one type of consequence, or a few types depending on number or severity of infractions... Thank you !
What a great questions Elena. So far I feel like I might have been avoiding it too, so now is a good time to look at it. ;) You see, in the past I referred to most school's have some kind of policy when it comes to student punishment, but I believe that every teacher should have classroom rules and punishments for when those rules have been broken. There's a lot I can say about punishment so I might make a video about it in the future. But remember that we don't want to make a punishment a big deal. We will warn students, and then if they transgress the first time we might ask to see them after class. The next step would be some kind of written warning. The fact is that they have to know that there are consequences. Do not make it personal! Try and get them to admit that they broke the rule in private. Ask them what the rule is. Don't blame them. Then they might write an apology or get detention. If it continues you have to speak to head teacher and perhaps call their parents for a meeting. But ---- When you are teaching in a place like a language academy where you don't have much power. Go warning - Talk after class - Written apology - Meeting after school. Try not to argue or punish in front of the class. There is still a lot more I should say about this. Let me do some research and think about it then perhaps do a video. Thank you for the question Elena ^^
@@etacude Thank you so much for the answer Eric, I've learnt something new, because I hadn't considered the option of talking to them in private after class. Thank you for covering imposter syndrome! I’ve developed it and even though I’m doing great I feel like it’s not me? Like they must be seeing something unclearly because I feel incompetent.
We all have to push through imposter syndrome, Passion. We have to, for our students' sake. 😃
the 2end thought (don't react) just what i need ..thank you sir for this amazing work
Hope it helps!
Thanks for you pieces of advice
You're so welcome!
I'm a 3rd year Bachelor of Physical Education student and I'm finding this video useful.
Really happy to hear that, Jasper! 🙏😊
Thank you so much for your kind response. Teaching is not easy, stay strong and positive!
I really search for this topic because I'm an aspiring teacher. Thank you for your advices. Hope i will become a great teacher to my future students. Definitely helpful! Wish me luck. Thank you. 😊

But until then... cheat!
@@etacude thank you Sir I will try my best.
Thank you so much I learned how to be a confident teacher especially from body language
I hope it helps! Let us know how your week goes if you are teaching. :)
@@etacude I am not yet a teacher but one day I will be a teacher. For that I am learning
Having many activities in tool box and very careful, meticulous planning and clear structure prevent many issues. If kids know what is expected and the activities are structured thoroughly, it is easier to prevent problems. The issue is students do not want to be in school because they have horrible parents. Good luck!
thank you ERic....for the tips...appreciate it!!

Bushra, I'm so happy to hear that! 😊
Are there any video topics that you would like to see? Thank you for your great support!
I am going to join your FB group for teacher support, soon.
Thanks so much Xx
@@etacude Yay! I can't wait for that live, what a treat! 😆🤗 I regard you as a mentor and it'll be such an inspiration to hear about your journey, thank you.

Hi Eric, nice video, can u pls suggest me some tips to handle grown up children like they are taller than me ,how to handle them
Hi Meenal! Good question, it must be scary having big, stupid boys towering above you. (I know this because I was a big, stupid boy once. lol)
Remember, they are more afraid of you than you are of them.

@@etacude I feel like I got the Imposter Syndrome you referred.
I have started teaching adults (which I prefer, than children) this year and, luckily, I found your videos before I started. I have changed my posture overnight thanks to you.

This is useful , I'm thrilled that I found ur chanel 💛
It's my 13th day in teaching and Im so depressed that I lost controll of time and classroom management to the extent that I decided to quit teaching though I like it . I'm still extremely hesitated about quiting or moving on 😑
Every teacher has had those feelings. There are some tough classes with difficult students and you got thrown into the deep end. Just remember that it will get easier. - Or rather, you will become stronger. On this channel I try to share some ideas and techniques that may help, but ultimately you have to become stronger to deal with the problems students give you. I don't now why I'm feeling so insecure, I know the subject but I just don't know how to teach the students...
They need you to be confident. Just try and share your knowledge in a basic way and believe that it will be good enough. Soon you'll pick up the skills as you gain more experience. 😃👍

thank you so much #9
Happy to share! 😊
thank you Eric, great info!
So far I feel like I might have been avoiding it too, so now is a good time to look at it. ;)
You see, in the past I referred to most school's have some kind of policy when it comes to student punishment, but I believe that every teacher should have classroom rules and punishments for when those rules have been broken.
I think it makes the relationship teacher student deeper and also shows respect towards that student, who hopefully will start to change. Will try :)
