Your video came at the right time. I like how you said giving candy will backfire. I have difficult class. I wrote the rules and posted them on the board along with the consequences. (If they don't stop their action when I stare at them I give them 5 fingers and they have to talk to me after class or they get a phone call home). All 3 of the students who disrupted apologized after class to avoid a phone call home. However, they repeated their actions the next time they came and I followed through with the 5 minutes except that I made strict eye contact with them and told them that they can't continue to repeat their actions or I will follow up with a phone call home, conference, or a detention. I am planning to sit at their table for lunch to find out why they don't like to come to my class. I am going let them share their feelings and maybe offer them to learn something ahead of time so they can demonstrate it to the class. The VP told the student they could go out of the room and sit in the hallway (no supervision) but my door locks and they can't come back in. What do you think of this?
Hi Diane, I like that you're getting serious with them and establishing boundaries. The only thing I disagree with is sending students out of a classroom where A. They should stay to learn. They will be missing out otherwise. and B. It is almost like the teacher is giving up, giving them the victory. Everything you said so far sounds right, but send out students (unless they become so unruly to the point of being physical), doesn't sit well with me.
Thanks for this tip. Although I'm a teacher for 18 years, I always open my mind for new information even from anyone younger than me. I was smiling when you mention some cliche that some "professor" / "experts" said about how to handle children. I totally agree with your statement about being a leader, not a follower. I see many young teachers try to be a pleaser type, although sometimes it works, but when in a serious case like fighting among classmates, the teachers lost their authority. I was once a teacher with bad temper, bad emotional control, and I started to correct myself by reading books about anger management. I have so much better anger management now, especially when I understand that don't take their testing on you personally and that is what I do, but I still act angry to show dominance. I like the concept of "be the leader" because we, teachers, are the ones students look up to, hence, the leadership plays an important role. The lesson I can get from your video is 1. Get students' respect, 2. Be firm and don't take things personal and 3. Be a confident teacher inside out. Your video has made me have more faith toward myself. Thank you
The only difference about my practice and your way is the "be happy" when students try to act strange or testing you. I'm not really angry, but I just act angry. I mean. I'm a person who smiles a lot. I look energetic and happy most of the time. But when the students "test" me, I stop being myself for a while and they will feel afraid. (Some of my closest students told me privately that I look scary when I'm not smiling)

My voice is not too strong and English is my second language, so a voice amplifier helped me a lot. It is true that misbehaving students gave me an opportunity to show boundaries for the entire class.
It's been almost 9 years since I'm teaching elementary level school kids. In my earlier years I used to get very angry and shout at them whenever they misbehaved in class. But with time I've learnt to deal with the situations more calmly. I wish I had found your advice in my initial years to make things easier for me. Anyway, thanks a lot for your valuable advice Eric. It's gonna help me more in the future to handle such situations in class. 😊

Extremely helpful, extraordinary! Just 1 thing: our teachers were experienced and tough, and each time a bully challenged them, they answered back. So the whole lesson was turned into verbal fighting, one bully rebelled after another and teacher answered rudely each time, So all lessons in my school seemed extremely annoying to me, I was a good student and wanted to learn literature, languages, chemistry... all I learnt at lessons was how to answer back and be rude. I hated my school because of that situation.

Hi Maria, your questions are tough but important so I'm glad that we can look at them. It also gives me some time to reflect, so thank you. What you're talking about is setting boundaries for ourselves and what we accept in our classrooms. Boundaries are essential to healthy relationships and, really, a healthy life. As a new teacher you are unsure about what boundaries to set and how to enforce it. First look at yourself, think clearly about what kind of actions you permit in the class, what things you 100% don't want, things you tolerate and then, very importantly, want to see in your class (for example students being more caring to one another). Then you have to think, how can I make these boundaries into classroom rules, and how can I consistently and fairly enforce it. Don't make too many, but make sure that students understand it and the consequences of not following it. They, and you will feel more at ease knowing where you stand. I want to say so much more but I hope you understand this. I will make a video about this in the future. Thank you for your question and support! ~ Eric
I remember one director said to me in one occasion " we need a teacher, not a students' friend. It's kind of sad to say that over the human evolution, kids / people by instinct will follow and respect who can be strong, serious and totally unbeatable, who can instill fear. A proof of that can be even that Barney; in the real life Barney as a teacher would be likely to see how students kick him and punch him and disrespect him all along the class, consequently the class will be a total noisy dome. We need to be hard and force our character to let them know who the leader is. A good reference of this and sounds pity is "Cesar dog tamer", the harder and the more he pushes dogs to be at the margin the better the dogs become, this really makes me feel we are not so different from animals.

Hello. All what you said is naturally true, but to make it simple, let's clarify why students come to classes? To be learners. Why learners? To get a job. Why get a job? To reach their purposes. If students have goals, then they value time and have respect for teacher. Time is short, and teachers have so many problems which is different from country to country. Teachers have been graduated from universities with diffcult lessons. Students only have to sit and keep quiet, believe me! Talkative ones and bad students will never change unless they want themselves. Teachers don't need to be leaders and tolerate too much.

Ok so what happened today was i had the last period in a difficult class that were throwing paper balls at each other (high schoolers males). I looked at one of them that i saw throwing and told him that he would get into trouble if he did that again. Then he did it again and i said that i’m gonna have him suspended. This same guy was suspended before by me for another misbehavior so clearly my strategy isn’t working. How exactly should i deal with this situation when i see them throwing stuff at eachother or any other kind of misbehavior?
Thank you for classroom management. Why do students make too noise and talk much.? Is it because a teacher is not a leader but a follower? Should you be always strict at the same time funnny? Students are only afraid of their parents. When you call their parents or school principal, only then they start behaving in proper manner. Why teachers didn't have issues with children 30 years ago? Why is that school children' behavior getting worse and worse nowadays?
Students need boundaries that are properly enforced. Perhaps they feel like the principal and parents are the only ones that can do that. So teacher's don't need to be funny or too strict, they should take control and manage those boundaries. I'm planning on making a big series on classroom management in the future, but that will only come out next year hopefully.

It is so hard... I've been watching lots of videos but always end up failing myself. My students are not afraid of me at all and they didn't respect me although I scold them many times. At first, I thought they didn't afraid of me, but turns out they didn't even acknowledge me as a teacher. Partly it was my fault for acting too kind. I'm trying to be firm but they didn't respect me. I feel so angry and ashamed with the other students because they could see my poor class management. I once brought a stick to make them feel maybe a little bit frightened, but guess what. They didn't even care because they know I will do nothing with it, which is true of course. When I'm teaching, they will be running around and make a loud noise. The nearby class also gets affected by it. I see my friends that are actually able to control the class, will always be acting fierce. Idk where to improve and how to start. For example, when you say to be happy when the students behave badly. How exactly do you do that? I mean, how do you react to the students at that particular time?
How i deal with every struggle. Hope it helps you. 1. First i NAME my 'problem'. 2. Then i look up what is exactly the opposite NAME of that issue 3. İ make a list of what i think goes good. (Helps me to not put myself totally down, otherwise you loose hope, simply by throwing away your good sides and only focussing on 'bad') 4. Then i look up the actions or attitude or THOUGHT which can help me achieving that opposite thing. 5. Then i watch videos where people really achieve that thing. Then i see it isssss possible. İf you can convinxe yourself of the posssibility, you dont have to watch the videos 6. İ ly down and start visualising how it would be if 'everything went well' 7. İ let myself feel that 8. Then i ask: where in my life did i noted in my brains that people dont listen to me. 9. İ find that and then i ask: how can i make my goal happen 10. Everyday wheb i bring my child tocschool i make sure we say, when leaving the house, all the fun, here we come! 11. İ noticed that judt asking the right question helps. 12. İs it noisy? Ask the right question... How can i make themclisten?? 13. Breath and just wait untill the solution pops up in the envitonment. 14 you will be surprised by this question asking method. 15. İm still asking and yet i notice imcasking too less.. 16 i learned that you can sense positive vibes as you can the negative even from distance. So thats why i wish for you now, that all the fun comes.to you too. The one most important thing... Never forget your goal..the moral one.. there are some children there that need someone to help them learn something that will benefit their lives, DESPİTE THEİR ATTİTUDE AT THE MOMENT, CZ THEY PROBABLY DİDNT HAVE THE PARENTS TO TEACH THEM THEY ARE HUMAN TOO.
That's a tough one Goldie. First, make sure that your class environment is a safe oasis. When students enter they know the rules and consequenses, and enjoy learning with you. Once you have control of your immediate environment you should try to share that with your colleagues and see what change you can make in the school. Easier said than done but focus on making your class safe, before trying to help the school. Good luck!

This same guy was suspended before by me for another misbehavior so clearly my strategy isn’t working. How exactly should i deal with this situation when i see them throwing stuff at eachother or any other kind of misbehavior?

Thank you for classroom management. Why do students make too noise and talk much.?
Is it because a teacher is not a leader but a follower? Should you be always strict at the same time funnny? Students are only afraid of their parents. When you call their parents or school principal, only then they start behaving in proper manner. Why teachers didn't have issues with children 30 years ago? Why is that school children' behavior getting worse and worse nowadays?
Students need boundaries that are properly enforced. Perhaps they feel like the principal and parents are the only ones that can do that. So teacher's don't need to be funny or too strict, they should take control and manage those boundaries.
I'm planning on making a big series on classroom management in the future, but that will only come out next year hopefully.

It is so hard... I've been watching lots of videos but always end up failing myself. My students are not afraid of me at all and they didn't respect me although I scold them many times. At first, I thought they didn't afraid of me, but turns out they didn't even acknowledge me as a teacher. Partly it was my fault for acting too kind. I'm trying to be firm but they didn't respect me. I feel so angry and ashamed with the other students because they could see my poor class management. I once brought a stick to make them feel maybe a little bit frightened, but guess what. They didn't even care because they know I will do nothing with it, which is true of course. When I'm teaching, they will be running around and make a loud noise. The nearby class also gets affected by it. I see my friends that are actually able to control the class, will always be acting fierce. Idk where to improve and how to start. For example, when you say to be happy when the students behave badly. How exactly do you do that? I mean, how do you react to the students at that particular time?
How i deal with every struggle. Hope it helps you.
1. First i NAME my 'problem'.
2. Then i look up what is exactly the opposite NAME of that issue
3. İ make a list of what i think goes good. (Helps me to not put myself totally down, otherwise you loose hope, simply by throwing away your good sides and only focussing on 'bad')
4. Then i look up the actions or attitude or THOUGHT which can help me achieving that opposite thing.
5. Then i watch videos where people really achieve that thing. Then i see it isssss possible. İf you can convinxe yourself of the posssibility, you dont have to watch the videos
6. İ ly down and start visualising how it would be if 'everything went well'
7. İ let myself feel that
8. Then i ask: where in my life did i noted in my brains that people dont listen to me.
9. İ find that and then i ask: how can i make my goal happen
10. Everyday wheb i bring my child tocschool i make sure we say, when leaving the house, all the fun, here we come!
11. İ noticed that judt asking the right question helps.
12. İs it noisy? Ask the right question... How can i make themclisten??
13. Breath and just wait untill the solution pops up in the envitonment.
14 you will be surprised by this question asking method.

16 i learned that you can sense positive vibes as you can the negative even from distance. So thats why i wish for you now, that all the fun comes.to you too.
The one most important thing... Never forget your goal..the moral one.. there are some children there that need someone to help them learn something that will benefit their lives, DESPİTE THEİR ATTİTUDE AT THE MOMENT, CZ THEY PROBABLY DİDNT HAVE THE PARENTS TO TEACH THEM THEY ARE HUMAN TOO.

What do you do when the majority of the school environment is violent?
That's a tough one Goldie. First, make sure that your class environment is a safe oasis.
When students enter they know the rules and consequenses, and enjoy learning with you. Once you have control of your immediate environment you should try to share that with your colleagues and see what change you can make in the school.
Easier said than done but focus on making your class safe, before trying to help the school. Good luck!
