So true most doctors are ignorant of the fact that MTHFR is a serious problem that can make one feel quite ill, the problem is that this condition cannot be treated with pharmaceuticals that is the reason they are not interested in knowing or treating it, Big Pharma much rather people be sick with depression, anxiety, cardio conditions etc which care usually treated with pharmaceuticals which gives them a never ending source of profits. This condition is treated with supplements and diets simple and cheap therefore doctors are not interested full stop

Thank you for this explanation. I am homozygous for MTHFR. Complicating this problem is the fact that a large portion of my small intestine had to be removed after my appendix burst when I was 7 years old. I take dissolvable B12 and folate, but I don't know whether I am overmethylated or undermethylated now. I wish I had known about all of this before I Iost my short-term memory and felt that I was dying. I did not know my own name, and I couldn't understand written language at all. I was sent to Psychiatry, but I knew this was a physical change, not an emotional issue. I drove myself to a hospital, pointed to my brain and stuttered something, then showed the front desk ladies my license, since I couldn't have spoken my name even if I had remembered it. A deficiency in B12 and folate is serious!

MTHFR can be deficiency or rate limiting factor @ one/more points in the entire Folate cycle. You need availability of ALL Folate cycle metabolic cofactors to address MTHFR effectively. These are ::
    1. Folate / MethylFolate / 5MTHF
    2. Active B2 / R5P
    3. Active B6 / P5P
    4. Glycine/Serine
    5. Methyl--B12
Folate metabolism is also rate limited by iron & heme metabolism, which in turn depends on availability of B6, B12, Copper, vit C, vit A & Glycine.
And if you are looking at universal methyl donor, you also need SAMe/methionine.
If you are looking to balance methylation , you also need Niacin/B3, which is a methyl group acceptor.

I was never able to get pregnant even with IVF. Only found out at age 61 why: mthfr mutation. I had a brother who died of asthma at age 10. I wish I'd known this while in child bearing years. I also learned i was born with Congenital Sucrose Isomaltase Deficiency. It would've been so helpful had I known earlier. I try to give myself closure re: inability to have kids. TBT, I could easily have had a child with lots of problems, so there's that.

This defect has literally made my life a living hell. I've struggled with all the things Dr. Berg listed for at least 15 years now. I just turned 29 and feel like I'm 70 some days. I do take a methylated B9 and B12 but I forget to take it sometimes... and I can always tell because it helps that much. I believe this gets worse with inflammatory foods. If I take a bite of gluten, it kills me. I highly recommend using activated charcoal too as this will help your body with any toxins but make sure to take 2 hours away from supplements. My safe foods seems to be any meat and cruciferous vegetables. If any of you are really sensitive, I would be sure to watch oxalates. It sucks that we have to sacrifice the foods others can easily eat, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do for your health and well-being. Thank you Doc for providing us info on this!

    • @kayystaff
      @kayystaff Рік тому

@@LowleyUK Cucumber and mint are definitely safe for me. But, I have to be careful with avocado because of high histamines and my body just doesn't like a lot of fruit, especially tropical fruits. 😥 Supplementing methylfolate (B9) and methylcobalamin (B12) really help so much. This stupid gene is just more of a reason to stay on track with my diet/lifestyle. One wrong move and I feel it so intensely! I have started adding in a few red potatoes and they dont seem to bother me much. My life has become revolved around trying to find foods I don't react to! lol Good luck to you!!

I recognize myself in your story. Some days, when I eat the right things, I am firing..running on very high frequency, enormous amounts of energy. Eating the wrong thing, like cashew nuts for example and I crash, too tired to do anything and need to lay down a few times during the day for an hour sleep. It gives me this brain fog, not a headache but the slight feeling my brain is inflamated or vibrating. Key is to figure out exactly what to put into my body and what absolutely to avoid.
Create a system for your B9 and B12 @katstaff317, like put them on your coffee-machine or next to your keys..something you need every day. Or make an notification on your phone,

Probably 40 percent of the population has it and is not aware. maybe more..from what my doctor told me..due to heart disease, Cancer rates, mental and immune disorders rising. I find that in itself very puzzling. Kids with Autism, ADD, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Anxiety Disorder, PTSD, Depression, Addictive behavior, Immune issues, should also be checked due to the explosion of cases here in the USA. With Autism still a mystery,2017 statistics showing us that 1 in 38 children now are on the Autism spectrum, as compared to the data in 2005, when it was 1 in 150.. Autistic kids are at higher risk for all the above mentioned, because they can not detox heavy metals due to low production of glutathione, due to MTHFR. Also Sulfa drugs cant be metabolized if you have MTHFR. Anemia, can suggest MTHFR. Diabetics should be tested. Vaccinations of any kind are hard on these infants, toddlers, and adolescents, teens, even adults, because of the preservatives like aluminum and mercury in trace amounts. Everyone should have there doctor check for MTHFR, especially if you have multiple heath issues not being resolved, or a child with disease in any form. Dr. Ben Lynch seems to be outspoken about MTHFR. I still find this whole thing not normal or naturally occurring.

Dr Berg. Thank you for addressing this. It can get complex mostly because MTHFR is not a stand alone defect for most people. It works in concert with all the others. If MTHFR is all you are dealing with then supplementing with methyl folate is a good thing But if you also have a snp such as COMT ++ or MAO, then supplementing with active folate can cause problems because it causes a build up of methyls. There are different forms of folate and B12 that are not methylated that might be better for some. It's all very interesting! This is a tough subject to discuss as it needs a deep dive in order to be accurate. Love your videos!

Hello, I'm looking to fix myself since I have a lot of "dirty genes" because I'm young and feel crappy all the time. I have to ask you, so what does COMT ++ mean? Does that mean COMT with both of the variants that make it a dirty gene? From my understanding so far, if you have one of the 55 genes from the book then you look to see if you have one or both of the variants. If you have one of the variants, then it's in the yellow. If you have both variants then it's in the red, and needs to be fixed first.
I have the MTHFR gene and COMT H62H

Dr Berg this is interesting. Would love to see you make a video for MTHFR( heterozygous defect), COMT(homozygous defect). These supplements recommended doesn’t lead to good outcome for these people it seems like . Turns out taking these supplements cause over-methylation and creates a dopamine overload. Folks report that they are not able to sleep in several days due to methyl cobalamin and methyl folate -> overmethylation-> dopamine hit-> insomnia and panick attacks. So what is your take here. This is worth a video on its own, about 25 to 30% of population is affected by variants on this.

French flour (much like English flour) is not legally mandated to be fortified and therefor contains no folic acid. I find it considerably more satisfying, and weirdly I have most more weight faster allowing myself some home cooked wheat then I did when I cut all grains all together.
