Let's just say Chris knew Ethan was a *spoiler*. And with all of his previous experience , was just trying his hardest not to boulder punch his face off
The major warning signs came from the developers saying, "we had feedback that RE7 was too scary, so we toned in down for RE8". WTF?! Your horror game being too scary is negative criticism?! That's like saying, "Our racing game has too many cars in it"
Of course the generation of tiktok and easy games would say the last map is the worst Im convinced that people are getting dumber and dumber every year
@@ThiagoSilva-gb2iv Yeah that was my thought. Plus it's a nice surprise to know that you think the game is gonna be Ethan running through one castle against some vampire chick and it turns out that there are 4-regions and the castle is just one of them. I love it when a game only gives you the impression it's smaller because you get more and you're actually surprised by it.
The writing for Chris is horrific. The fact that they address it in the game by having one of his comrades call him out ("that he should've told Ethan") makes it a 1000 times worse.
Totally 👍👍 it just sucked to watch him swap dialogue.......or fail to, even when it would substantially reduce Ethan's understandable distress 😞 Sometimes I feel that the more inflated the franchise is, the more the emphasis lands on cutscenes - which usually contain writing you 'might' be able to get away with in a short cutscene....but the longer the exchanges go on for, the more waitwhowhatthef@ck ?! moments occur. Or it's a Cringe Festival. More than once I wondered if Chris had hit his head during the gaps in separate RE's. Then there's that mass he put on really fast, he stopped punching boulders - he makes the boulders fight each other 🙃
I mean he's a dude struggling with ptsd and crazy shit on the daily I mean him being a flawed human is ok the fact they even pointed it out is good as well
@@RaNgErs_Rep flawed human = I'll shoot this guy's "wife" in the head twenty times, right in front of him, without any explanation, no need to elaborate and hey, at least I said "I'm sorry, Ethan" lol 🤣 I agree that he is flawed and has ptsd, but that part of the story was literally insane and was only done to keep the "Is Chris the villain?"-narrative going, it was a huge part of the promotion leading up to the release too.
@@marwellie to be fair I should have clarified as I said yes done so mutch shit seen everything so his thought of best choice would logically be diffrent. But yea they could have handled it better like sedating Ethan.. lol
This is honestly my only real major issue with the game. Why were the winters relocated so close to the origin of the mold, why did Chris just take rose after shooting fake Mia without telling ethan anything, why didn't he try and work with Ethan after realizing ethan has already made it to the village
I jokingly called this game "Ethan gear solid" during my playthrough because how much plot was spoken to you and how alot of the bosses felt like MGS villians but "horror"...then Chris made a Mad Max tank and told you to fight mecha-heisenburg and my joke became reality
I think some bosses do involve that horror trope for mgs such as brain washed child soldiers, vampires, cursed fortune, a part plant hermit grey beard, some ghosts too. The games are a lot more chilling than the typical bond plot with tons of occult and paranormal characters. The mgs3 fury reminded me of some Soviet punk horror characters - he has space madness too and has a gimmicky horrifying weapon in flame throwers and looks like a pre 50s version of the terminator. Creepy x files stuff.
@@shmekelfreckles8157 Idk, actually putting some effort and thought into the game game design? Nah that's too hard, just make the game linear and decrease the player's damage on higher difficulties. Job done!
@@NoKidsNoProblem I genuinely thought the castle will be the whole game. I got so disappointed when it ended and it felt like more than half of it was unexplored.
@@MasterOfCookies8 absolutely. There were still so many places to go. I wish they extended the castle and cut the moreau part out entirely. He is my least favorite Lord. Donna's section should have been longer as well.

Every time Resi gets successfully reinvented, capcom ruin the next installment by insisting "well if you like that, surely you'll love it with more action and explosions"... They dont know how to make a sequel without turning the action dial up to 11 or starting again from scratch.
Surprised he didn’t talk about how Chris is so insufferable in this game. Literally, he goes from one of the best characters in the entire series to the worst because he is an asshole to Ethan for no reason, and the game would have been MUCH shorter if he just told Ethan what was going on. What an embarrassment.
@@sindelscat9336 (there are spoilers after the first sentence in this comment) yeah mia got canned hard, imo the story woulda been a lot better without the involvement of chris and his team. woulda been cool to have a segment where u play and escape as mia and then there could be optional moments depending on ur actions where mia could help ethan out. woulda also been nicer to have ethan give mia his rose and left.
RE4 hides its linearity with a sense of adventure. You don’t feel like you’re going through levels of a game, you feel like you are going on a wild rollercoaster ride and the Village and Castle are the backdrop. The Island is where the linearity starts to show more, but there’s enough action that you probably don’t care. RE Village doesn’t have a sense of adventure, since it goes more quiet and suspenseful route compared to RE4 but the suspenseful route works more with a choice based open-world which unfortunately it doesn’t have.
RE4's action and level design are also just a lot better. RE Village just has too many flaws. They could've hid treasures in many places with the shinies, but nope... there's not a whole lot of them hidden. The game has stretches where you go without encountering a new shiny spot to shoot for hours (assuming your first time through). And there's barely any weapon upgrades to find in Village, most of the extra stuff you do results in treasure you can sell. Upgrading weapons at the shop also isn't spaced out properly. You go through like half of the game without being able to upgrade any of your weapons to a new level. Those are just a few flaws, but... the game has A LOT of issues. Still a decent game overal, but both RE7 and RE8 are at the bottom of the mainline games for me. And I played through them in the best way possible, all in VR.
@@yousini No, I want to have a conversation sit close to the edges of a mountain, witnessing the sunset while we eat some nice desserts with some good hot beverages.
What's funny about the animal skull is, I was watching Markiplier play it out of curiosity to see what the game is like and he didn't even know the door was locked. He picked up the head, crawled under the space, fought the witch, picked up the head and noticed it had 2 notches and just put it on the statue, and walked out having never known the door locked behind him when he picked up the head.
@@graphite7898 I'm curious what the point of it was then. If it wasn't meant to be a puzzle of some sort, why bother locking the door behind the player?
It sounds to me like this guy is angry about Capcom making Resident Evil more accessible to the masses. That's really what all this comes down to. Puzzles and inventory management are stupid easy. Its linear so you always know where to go and what to do because everything is straight forward. Characters are bland so that Capcom doesn't trigger too many SJWs. Basically its Resident Evil for Everyone, and that why he hates it so much. To be honest, I can't fault him for that. Its all about the money, not art and not the player experience. Just the money...
@dev null the game tries to channel RE4 with the tetris inventory and key items and merchant but doesn't understand anything about what made RE4 good. That game had varied and interesting level design and constant combat punctuated by quiet time....great pacing. This game you're just pushing through empty corridors most of the time. Level design is nonexistent...just featureless corridors and rooms.
The biggest mistake when it comes to RE Village for me is that they showed castle and there was so much hype around it and Lady D, so I was quite annoyed when I saw they basically just full autoed castle part and move u to some other shitty places. Castle should've been last place u can unlock and explore. With how big the thing is, they could've made so many paths and hidden places for u to explore and put Megamycete under the castle in some secret place, just how FromSof placed Old Chaos under the castle of Eleum Loyce behind throne in Dark Souls 2. Make castle mean something and make the grandios reveal of the women who was a huge influence in the grand scheme of RE universe.
You cant even re-enter the castle after you kill lady D. SO if you left anything in there you cant get it. I really thought the castle was gunna be like the bulk of the game.
It was stale. They already had a European peasant village and castle in 4… talk about being redundant of fresh ideas. And this is a professional dev team we’re talking about. And that aside, the entire game was just 💩 💩 💩 Unfortunately, just because Capcom have been churning out successful remakes, it doesn’t mean canon sequels will be good (as they continually demonstrate). The franchise died at 4… time to let it go.
I agree with some of your points the castle definitely should of been longer, bigger, and better but I think placement wise it should have gone by the Lord's cadou affinity so Moreau should have been first followed by Donna then dimitrescu and finally heisenberg. I also thought they should have really done more with Donna's part it's just to quick and there's no action even the boss fight isn't even a real boss
R3make's map was actually really fucking well designed, with lots of beautiful and intricate areas the player never visits. The original map was fully and dynamically interconnected, and was only cut off by barricades of cars after higher ups decided to axe all the stuff the devs already put in the game
The reason the factory is hated is because players were used to just push forward without any thinking. Now suddenly the game asks you to even slightly use your head. Of course people are not having it.
It's not just the fact that after being brainlessly railroaded throughout the game , the Factory suddenly remembers that Resident Evil games have exploration and puzzles , it's also the fact that it's comparatively long to the other parts of the game . They overhyped the Castle part which turns out to be rather short , the Villa and the Lake/Basin are virtually inconsequential , and then you're stuck in a massive Factory that looks like a dev's steam/dieselpunk wet dream , which turns out to be the largest portion of the game , with the hope that you might be able to make an actual choice in the game and side with Transformers Magneto , but no . There's just no sense of balance whatsoever in the game .
I actually think that factory is the best area in the game, its terrifying and forces me to mind my actions , as the drill monsters dont go down easy . A true survival horror experience , no jumpscares , just the feeling of death approaching
The fact that the game keeps changing it’s style depending on the section JUST MEANS the game doesn’t know what it wants to be and it’s trying to be everything to everyone!!! No form of entertainment that does that is good!!! Never!!!
Can I just say how nonsensical the layout of the Dimitrescu Castle is? The main entrance is through a side door a couple of rooms away from the "main hall"; the foyer, which should be the main entrance, actually leads to the chapel where you fight Lady D. It's like you entered the Spencer Mansion through the guest house, then the main hall led to the lab.
One thing you missed about the orange tile puzzle is that the lights actually turn green whenever a correct tile color is chosen, so its even easier than you what you said. You don't even need to look at the reference paper, just hit each tile until a green light pops up and so on.
Good puzzles = trilogy original project zero, resident evil remake, resident evil 3 original. Something that looks like a puzzle but it's not a puzzle = the game of this video.
This explains why I was able to so effortlessly complete this game. I'd be introduced to a new villain, get excited at how'd theyd be implemented into the next section, and before I knew it I'd already be in a boss fight. Kinda blown away from the hype of Lady D and her daughters, the amount of time they're in the game is so short.
Were you able to so effortlessly complete the game??? You must have played it on the easiest difficulty.Because I played it on the highest difficulty and it took me 20 hours to beat
@@foggyvhs8790 yes,you must have played it on medium difficulty. If you had played it on the highest difficulty,it would have taken you at least 15 hours to complete because some of the boss fights are really very hard to win on the highest difficulty, especially Madre Miranda. Finally I would like to say that RE Village is a good game and the video just overexaggerates its cons
To be fair, I really liked village, but you raised a lot of good points here! The experience of the game was enough for me, I'm just here for the vibes and spooks. But I can see how someone who was here for the "Res formula" would have issues with village.
@@RainbowDollyPng because that's what successful franchises do. you want to keep the magic and the fans you have and gather new fans too. at the end a company wants to make as much money as possible, which is totally fine. "evolve and branch out" is the wrong term. like RE4 and village. those games aren't real RE games as they don't feel anything like RE. both games are fun to play though and were successful. evolving in the formula were things like the camera angles from fixed to OTS to first person, the quick turn, the crafting system and other quality of life improvements. what RE4, RE5, RE6 and village did was completely changing the game and genre. there was no evolving
@@bepohal well using purely subjective terms like “feels like RE” is obviously problematic because people will disagree with you right off the bat. Also your distinction for “change versus evolution” is completely arbitrary. The connective tissue in the franchise is still apparent to me, RE didn’t just suddenly become a different franchise at 4 lol
@James Woodward After the first playthrough I also would have rated 8/10. I thought "greeeat, what a replayability, tons of weapons, exploration". I beat two times in a row. Yeahhh. Thaaat introduction to introduction it really put me off. Exploration is just an illusion (as pointed in a review). It just a turnoff. RE4 is waayyyy more nuanced.
I agree 100%, but it's still worth considering since speedruns utilize in-game mechanics to their extreme and can highlight issues with them. Especially in RE games since they have Always encouraged replaying the game with different options and they grade you on your speed and saves (and nothing else, as of late.) For example, I re-played RE2R about 11 times to get S+ in each campaign, and developed the fastest route I could at my skill level. Im absolutely Not a speedrunner, but a lot of those principles still applied to my experience with RE2R, and I have many of the same complaints about RE3R that actual speedrunners do because of that.

the Vampire woman was so non-threatening. Too many rooms she cannot enter and then she has no gap-closing move, so you can evade her so easily. She should have been able to extend out her nails to stab you from across the room, or she should have been able to magically shut doors that you are trying to enter and then you have to do a quicktime to force them open, in which time she can reach you and kill you... anything. They bungled her
For 90% of players it was still hard enough. Because only the 10% of gamers are good and it was easy for them since they avoided attacks without fear. The majority is not that good and had a hard time even on easier difficulties. I think It's reasonable to make a game this way because the bad majority needs to be able to complete the game without dying every minute and for the real gamers it is still a challange on VOS difficulty. Criticism is needed here but the difficulty is always a non pleasing topic. Hard games for the majority will usually be easy for a small portion of good gamers. You need safe rooms for those who aren't extremely good with movement and mechanics. I seen a lot of very good players die over and over on VOS difficulty
Honestly had something to do with how combat work in this game or at least they tried keeping it with the spirit of RE7 but you can't have Ethan dodging or countering enemies like they're leon or Chris You practically just distance a bit and face tank everything with guard.
Well yeah, she's easy to avoid, but she becomes more difficult when her daughters materialize and trap you between them and her. And after you kill them all off, then it's just a breeze to just hide from her, and move around. Imagine that becomes quite the distressing event on VoS.

Yeah 4 was fucking amazing how they used music. So many iconic memorable musical moments like the time you encounter Regenerator, Las Plagas, return to Village at night, Novistadors, encountering the big chanting ritual in castle. ALL THOSE are so memorable. RE Village had NONE of those music/atmosphere moments. They should just make RE9 like RE4, but scarier. THATS IT!! then it would be masterpiece 2.0.
oh and also how they averted expectations every so often in genius ways like having the dog maze be with zero music, but being one of the most unsafe and nerve wracking areas in the game lol.
Not trying to fight or be mean, just genuinely curious... what did you like about it? I mean it's terrible. I really don't get what people liked. It's just sooooooo bad.
There wasn't any reason to as none of them had any real relevance to the Resident Evil story. They were just there to be fought and dispatched and had no connection with any of the protagonists at all.
So the lack of actual exploration and decision making is what made this game a bad Resident Evil. It is actually a great point. I remember that one of the best feelings the classic RE made me feel was the joy of finding something new or understanding the use of an item I got hours ago and didn’t know what to do with it.
@@Darkri187 re7 was similar to that, but it usually at least gave a variety of 2 rooms to explore. Re2 remake's exploration was a bit overwhelming. It's most likely because of the pacing, but in Re2, they have such large sections of exploration with almost nothing else, and it feels like you aren't making progress anymore. Having at least a little exploration in re8 would've probably bumped up my enjoyment of the game by a really high amount
People just do not want the truth. I do not know if we ever get GTA 6 but right now I can tell that it will be ,,10/10 masterpiece, blablabla" How do I know that? You don't even have to play a game to review it. Populism likes a game give it 9,10 something, populism does not then trash it. 2 of my biggest disappointments is boss ai, lady D does not pursue you nearly as aggressively as she should its completely tensionless. this goes for many of the bosses. they could even scale it so the more of her daughters you kill the more aggressive her patrols become. and then the haunted house with the doll lord, man just wow. they really had a blazing iron there with the amount of psychological fuckery they could do and they just refused to strike it. and i loved factory most interesting part of the game, i loved the freaky cyborg zombies.
“Tensionless” is a great way to describe the lady D encounters. I just felt bored when she was around and I just walked off to another room. Even if she hit me with her nails it was a minor inconvenience. The build up and atmosphere that made me genuinely scared of Mr X wasn’t there even if they were mechanically similar.
@MeatHeadMeerkat it's not that he wants everything to be Doom, he just wants games to be good. if he likes *Super Mario 64*, then it's not that games need to be Doom to be good.
Another thing about Village, I was able to beat multiple boss fights in one try. Something I don’t think I’ve ever done in any Resident Evil game before.
Man, it's so rare to see a Resident Evil fan who doesn't just blindly love or blindly hate everything, but can actually go in depth about the concepts and ideas presented in the games to formulate well thought out opinions, whether positive or negative. The discourse around these recent games are so sickening with how people immediately jump down your throat for saying you don't like something.
sadly not many people think this way and everyone got their own opinions up their ass... as if it changes the facts that's been shown in these videos... multiple times but still refuses to agree cause " it ruins the fun" for them apparently....
really? I haven't seen that so much with RE fans. Most I know have their own preference usually liking most of them hating a few and loving maybe 3 of them. THAT IS, until this game. People got real defensive over it lol, they did do what you described when this one came out, they did it like never before lol. I think it works better as a cinematic/storytelling type game than and viewed through that lens people could like it, but this as a Resident Evil game, this is mid grade. Just my opinion, I thought the story elements were wonderfully done and it did evoke emotions from me.
@@YZYGWD Depends on what you prioritize in the series. I'd be a lot happier if they continued the series' ongoing narrative with its established cast of characters in a game much more reminiscent of Resident Evil 2 remake. But first-person hillbilly horror that pays tribute to Resident Evil's past like some sort of spiritual successor? @Chadthan Winters thats honestly every RE game, once you play it once you can probably beat it again in like 3-4 hours. Does not mean its a bad thing tho
I'm not going to hold any punches with what I'm about to say... marketing Lady Dimitrescu as a main character and major villain in trailer/gameplay, then killing her off in the beginning of the game was a grimy, pathetic, manipulation tactic. It worked splendidly for the Capcom though since everybody lost their minds over the very tall, busty, curvy, thick vampire mutant woman. She damn near broke the internet. The voice actress did a phenomenal job. Lady Dimitrescu might not of been the primary antagonist and final boss, but having a satisfying experience getting to understand her character and personality would have made her legendary, especially if we got to fight her five times like they did with Jack Backer back in Resident Evil 7. Every time you face off against her, she becomes more and more aggressive, her fighting style and powers become harder to deal with as she's slowly mutating into something worse. "Nope forget that lets use her to sell our shitty little sequel because sex sells, who doesn't love some big-ass titties and a fat ass, am I right boys?" Piss off...
Wasn't even marketed that way in the beginning. It was the people who jumped to conclusions that she had a bigger role and going tall vampire milf. If anything it was smart of them to play along with the thirsty Simps. In fact the major marketing point at the beginning was Chris seemingly being evil yet people just focus on Lady D for no real reason other than horny. You reap what you sow.

Actually the RE4 castle follows the same linear progression with items to pick up on your way and backtrack to older areas to use them, just like the RE8 castle does. The difference is the RE4 castle is way more fun to play through because of the encounter variety.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but personally I don’t think Resident Evil has been survival horror since RE4 first came out. Other than the remakes, every new title has been more of an action-horror game then a survival horror one. Even RE7 was extremely linear and action focused, emphasized by the shift to an FPS. This critique is legitimate in many ways, but I can’t help but disagree. I feel like Mayo wanted classic Resident Evil, and that he doesn’t care that they’ve clearly been changing the direction of the franchise for a while now. I expected an action game since that’s kinda what the new titles in the series have been since RE’s 4-7, and I really enjoyed Village even with it’s lacking difficulty and linearity. I feel like without the remakes being somewhat fresh in mind, the perception of Village would be exponentially different.
No it would not be different. I love RE4 but even as a kid playing it for the first time all I could say is "It's a great game, but it's not Resident Evil." Then 5 and 6 came out and sucked, 7 tried to be scary but forgot that VR jumpscares are surprising, not scary. The perception that 8 is not a great game would be kept because to those long time RE fans the survival horror gameplay was the reason we played RE in the first place and true survival horror games are practically non existent today. I have tried so many horror games that reviewers classify as "survival horror" but in reality they are simple hide n seek horror games or action games with horror elements. RE2 remake surely was a breath of fresh air but if it had never came out I can assure you long term fans would still hold this perception even more so because of the lack of true survival horror experiences.
My point is that there was no survial horror aspect to those games since 1. Just action games with horror skin applied to them. It was their intention since RE1, they wanted an action/FPS game from the get go, they didn't made that due to hardware limitations, the more we advance the more they finally reached this possibility, 4 was their proud evolution and unlike niche series that sold jack shit cause they never evolved (hello SILENT HILL) they managed to always keep moving forward and made a ton of money for that. RE8 is yet another evolution in the right way, the only problem being the casual level of difficulty cause in order to sell a game now you have to basically make them playable even for absolute dumbass, the Journalist dumb level. The argument "its not a RE game" is so stupid that it makes me laugh, the games are called Biohazard they're about viruses and bio chemical weapons, not about horror, not about zombies, not about solving puzzles. It's as silly as seeing people who know nothing about japanese culture and money, using Konami pachinko meme when RE had more pachinko than all Konami's franchises together. It's a Biohazard game, only way too easy to please a bigger audience.
@@hikari67 It makes me laugh that you say RE 1 is the only game that was survival horror. It outs hat you never played it and just read that the creative director wanted to make the series an action series. His hands were tied and they had to make 2 a survival horror game and that's exactly what 2 is. 3 has a tiny bit of action but still heavily leans in the survival horror gameplay. 4 was when he got to blow his creative load. 4 is a great game but a bad RE game. 8 is just trying to be 4 but fails to understand what made 4 so great.
@@snakeplissken7194 RE1 wasn't even an horror game to begin with, might scare a child maybe but there's far more horrific stuff on the PS1 that pretty much no one heard of. And thanks for pressing X to Doubt people you don't know but i did play the series, dude, i think i've done enough runs of them, from casual runs, to speedruns, to knife only, to silly over complicated challenges... I've done the full series and all its ports, even the worst, RE2Gamecom is the pinnacle of shitty port. Not touched the pachinkos though cause man wtf i'm not that autistic xD But still, i can say that straight to your face, none of those games are survival horror games in my opinion and yes, 4 is old, mechanicly speaking it's old af, many games surpassed it even if it was a pionner in the genre and yes 8 is better than 4 and i will keep playing 8 more than 4 for sure haha.
@@hikari67 "and yes 8 is better than 4 and i will keep playing 8 more than 4 for sure haha" Can you explain this then? Just take the part of the games which is most similar which is the parts near the start in which you surive waves of enemies. The way RE8's version works is explained in this video, and there is not much to it. No real way of approaching it in ways other than the one the game intends. That's it. In RE4 the enemies only become hostile once they notice you, the game encourages you to look around and think about your approach. You can try to mount a defence in the house with the shotgun, you can look through other houses and find supplies, ammo, grenades etc. The player is also punished for making certain decisions. Want to get the shotgun? Well then you have to fight a chainsaw enemy and the enemies will swarm the house from upstairs and downstairs. Want to try and escape from either side of the map? One side has a chainsaw guy waiting for you at the gate and when you turn around the rest of the villagers have flooded the narrow path. Go to the other gate and there is just a grenade which you might have to use just to escape being trapped. Want to go up the ladder in the middle and hide? Too bad, enemies start lobbing molotovs at you. That's just talking about approach and ignoring game mechanics though. Enemies will throw hatchets at you, run at you, lunge at you to grab you. Some enemies will have pitchforks and attack from a greater range etc etc and the game gives you answers to all of this situations. You can shoot an enemy projectile out of the air. If the enemy runs at you, shoot him in the legs and he will fall down. The enemies with pitchforks are easily baited into attacking you, and have a long recovery window that you can stun them in for a melee attack. You can use melee attacks to get some invincibility and clear a crowd of enemies, the list goes on. Once you have the mechanics down, then some of the punishments the game gives you for venturing into different areas start to become a reward for your good play. For example you could go get the shotgun and use your greandes and yout shotty ammo to kill the chainsaw enemy and be rewarded with a decent amount of money, but now you lost a lot of supplies and you can't encounter the chainsaw enemy at the gate, Want to do better? You can start the area by going and killing the optional chainsaw enemy by the gate with your pistol and melee attacks, maybe a grenade for good measure, now you are rearded a valuable ruby and can try to defeat the second chainsaw enemy for an even greater reward. Mastered the games mechanics? You can defeat the gate chainsaw guy with just your knife by baiting his attacks and using the instant stun in his recovery animation to knock him down with a melee attack and clear any villagers away from you. You can recieve all the possible rewards without having to use any grenades or ammo for your shotgun because you are good at the game. A reminder that RE4 is a game from the early 2000s while RE8 is a game from 2021. It would be interesting to hear your argue and justify why a game which you described as "mechanically speaking is old as fk" somehow executes a very similar scene but way better with so many more options for the player. Also thankfully for the many people who think that RE1 is a survival horror game and do infact think it was a horror game to begin with, your opinion does not matter, regardless of which person's face you are willing to say it to. The game is objectively a survival horror game and one of the best ever in terms of atmosphere and visuals.
I played almost all of the resident evil games recently in order and got so used to the puzzle format that I actually got more lost in RE Village because when I found the animal skull I EXPECT to need it later on, not immediately.
easily the worst part of this game is the fact that it sacrificed all the awesome survival horror elements and goodwill of RE7 just so they could try to sell more copies by copying Resi4, and ultimately just being a worse version of the game. isn't that what killed the franchise in the first place? I hate capcom sometimes.
I thought this game was great personally, however you bring very great criticisms to the table. I actually never found the game hard in the slightest and always had ammo.
it may be because i played on console but it was the complete opposite for me, most of the time i struggled to find ammo or have enough material to even make some
@@Zovereign I would rather have played the entire game as Chris. But I guess that is the point. By this point in the series characters like Chris and Leon are hardened survivors. So them traveling through the village would be child's play to them.
@@LordMalice6d9 Yes it feels more frightening to be a way less experienced combatant. I'd hate the game to be more about Chris, honestly the least interesting main character I've seen. He'd simply punch and carve a path with his overpowered assault rifle.
I thought I was alone as an RE fan, hated village. It was dull, repetitive, and genuinely insulting after the masterpiece that was 7. "We thought we went too far with the horror in 7" No you outdone yourselves and spectacularly, you idiots.
The thing that makes a game a game is player input and decision making.. too many modern games take all or most decisions away from the player and that is a giant issue I have with a lot of modern games
I feel the same way. I'm fine with it in some cases like Red Dead 2, but my god the new God of War games are so pretentious and obnoxious with the cutscenes. If I wanted to not have any control and witness a good story I'd just watch a movie instead.
He omits a lot of the information in order to strengthen his argument. He also doesn’t mention any of the optional areas after each lord, especially everywhere you can go before the stronghold.
I actually didn't even crawl through the first time because I thought the key would be in another part of the castle. When I got the animal skull, I was just like "Wait that's it?"
It seems that this is the cycle of life in RE series. Roughly speaking. 1. Restrained survival horror, that is good but doesn't have very wide appeal. 2. A more action focused survival horror that has more wide appeal. 3. A super ridiculous schlocky action, that crosses the line and doesn't appeal to survival horror fans at all. Then we hit reset and restart cycle. You can spot this both in games of the series and even within one game.
True horror is hard to sustain, there's a reason that the best horror games are either one-offs, or continually cycle in new protagonists. Once things get too familiar, the shock and fear gradually goes away, the first time you see a zombie, it's scary as hell, the hundredth time, not so much. Why I always believed that RE is best as an action horror hybrid, coz you can expand the narrative and also continue character storylines and still make it interesting. A horror game only works perfectly imo, the first time you play it, after that it just becomes a game. It's not a sustainable genre for a long running series.
It felt too easy, does it feel like horror when you have 50 shotgun shells, over a 100 bullets and around 15 rounds for your grenade launcher when you end on your first playthrough. Part of horror is feeling helpless. I felt like Arnold in an 80:ies movie.
@@tor-bjornholmstrom8691 Then you just had too low difficulty level. Take Village of Shadows difficulty and I will quarantee that you wont have any spare bullets. I think hardcore is the best one if people wants more of survival horror. Standard is much more RE4 style action. VoS as NG is insanely hard and too hard for most.

she's a generic stalker being used these days in so many games, they don't enter many safe regions. It was the same with Dahaka and Ruvik too, and same with Dimitrescu
She is my least favorite stalker in RE, you just don't interact with her that much, she only follows you for like three rooms and she's pretty much a wall that you can shoot at but won't be affected at all, the other stalkers like X and Nemmy gave you the choice to run away from them or take them down to gain a breather and also dropped rewards for fighting them.
I still won't understand if Chris took rose at first then why did they take a shortcut through the village where they knew Miranda lived before turning into Mia. Isn't how Ethan finds the village, just seems too coincidental. What should have happened was Miranda kidnapping Rose from their home and Ethan trying to find her against Chris's wishes. But Chris just let him go knowing he can't keep a father away from their child.
This is the second review I’ve seen that doesn’t mention it’s the cold. I read it in my first go. When I hear details like that missed it makes the review feel less valid. Like what else did they not see.
@@jakedizzle That’s exactly my thoughts. Like he complains about the game not being explorable, but missed a bunch of stuff that expands the lore/explains more of what’s going on. The only way to find these is from exploring. On my playthrough, I explored every nook and cranny I could find. @@Foinha17 It’s always been ridiculous. It’s Resident Evil. That doesn’t mean they at least try to explain what’s going on in notes and stuff. Sure it’s silly, but it’s interesting at the same time
As a massive resident evil fan. I felt off while playing this game. I never could put it into words or describe why. Perfect video, thanks for putting it into words!
Same. For me- it was the poor writing and generic characters that have no depth to them and were just there as obstacle to a boring game that can’t compete with it’s predecessors in terms of storytelling that is suppose to keep you invested in the game.
I loved RE Village in the context of it being an RE7 sequel. The enemy variety was increased to include more than hicks and shit demons, they reference Chris punching a boulder, and the gunplay is pretty fun for what little there is. What I don't like about RE8 is how short it is. There's the castle, the stronghold, and the village. Everything else is a pathway to an interactive cinematic or a short and easy boss fight. The Dollhouse is AAA Amnesia. The swamp is more sliding through cracks in the wall than it is actually shooting things.
You forgot the cyborg factory, which is a slog. I don't mind the length per se, but the best parts were in the castle and dollhouse. The game got bland after that.... Could've been much better if the castle was longer and some of the other bits trimmed or even cut.
@@packardcaribien I really liked the cyborg factory. It had some of the best atmosphere in the game and the level design (aside from segmenting it all with an elevator) was stunning. I hated the Dollhouse, it literally just felt like I could go play any indie horror title from 2011 and get the same thing. It was essentially Amnesia the Dark Descent but with higher production values. The baby was scary the first time I played it, and the first time I speedrun the game. After that, it will ALWAYS play out EXACTLY the same way regardless of player input.
@@charlesmartiniii1405 The game withholds a difficulty setting behind a second playthrough, though! They could have added just a tiny bit of variability or something, ANYTHING to make it different, and they don't! You know what? I take back what I said. Amnesia is better than the Dollhouse. I think you would like Amnesia the Dark Descent (the first one, other two are kinda poopy) and Visage if you like that kind of gameplay. I personally don't, but those two games are pretty fun and make much better use of that kind of gameplay. They actually vary things up quite a bit and keep you on your toes at all times. Amnesia kinda runs like garbage on newer hardware though...
Dollhouse is AAA Amnesia? Are you isnane? The Dollhouse is Outlast with a code of paint, basic gameplay, almost no AI, barely any story. Comparing the Dollhouse to Amnesia is insulting
One thing I liked about the RE7 was the DLC that had "Nightmare" mode. I can't believe they didn't add that in RE8, even though it has a lot more guns and customisations than RE7. That game mode would've been crazy in RE8, its a mixture of RE, COD Zombies and FNAF lol.
Why did they even do this approach? They had their shit together with "modernizing the old games" in RE7 and RE2 remake. Now they took steps backwards. All they had to do was build upon the strengths of RE7 and RE2MAKE.
To appeal to the masses. A bit like chart music. Lots of people might like it and think it's good, but it's all extremely manufactured and over produced. I feel like this game was just one corporate decision after another.
@John Smith it was though...I don't know how I got through it...yes after mold monster 45 I was like seriously! But for all my fear I beat it in one sitting 😂
@John Smith it was actually a bit of that, but also you have to know that the development began when RE7 hasn't even released. So, Capcom was afraid RE7 wouldn't sell well (turns out it's one of the best in the series) and decided to make RE8 more action oriented to cater the players who are used to the modern RE games.
My biggest problem with Village wasn't that it was necessarily awful or anything like that, it just plays way to similar RE4. Even the areas are same-ish with the village, lake-swamp area, castle, abandoned military industrial complex. It felt more like an update than a new game, and then playing the RE4 remake kinda just brought it all up again. I also didn't appreciate that while aside from the boss fights in RE7 (which are over the top cheesy aside from the Mom), RE7 felt much more like a return to the original series of being closer to the OG games and then they just went full RE4, RE5, RE6 mode for RE8.
Which is why I compare RE8 to RE4 and RE7 to the original RE games. It is much more similar to the older games than the new ones, except its in first person. RE8 plays much more like RE4-6. It clearly abandons horror for action, it's easy, there is very little item management, and what little there is focuses more on managing cool weapons over anything else. I don't think it is absolute dog shit, but it feels just a tad bit too different from RE7. RE3 og vs RE1 and RE2 felt more logical a progression from less horror to more action than RE8 does to 7 or RE4 does to the previous games.
@@ashleywilkonson386 This man just said that VILLAGE "plays really similar to RE4, aint no way. Just the way RE0 feels so identical to Operation Raccon City 🤣🤣😂😂
Thanks for artfully articulating the disappointment with the mechanics. For story, I just didn't feel a connection to any of the characters. Why was Ethan a faceless canvas especially in 8 where he has a specific personality attached? Why did none of the bad guys have an appropriate accent for this Romanian village? Why the HELL did they feel the need to connect 7 & 8 to Spencer?
That’s one reason why I love and hate 7, because it no real connection to the rest of the series besides some files, name, map design, the BSAA and of course Chris Redfield
@@Unownshipper I heard that RE7 originally wasn’t going to be a mainline Resident Evil game, but a spinoff with no connection to the mainline story, but they decided to turn it into a mainline game and it screwed up the RE Story and they had to force Chris into this game for that reason. Even Carlos Oliveira would’ve made more sense than Chris if you ask me
@@JCardo2502 God that makes way too much sense. It explains why the mine in RE7 contains a massive and hastily prepared text dump to connect the game to the rest of the series. Also explains why that version of Chris looks nothing like Chris. And absolutely, give Carlos some love.
@@wearing688 it's a joke dude. He is referencing a Video Game Dunkey video where he talked about how dumb people are when you criticize a game they like.
My biggest problem with RE8 is that even for a resident evil game it's way too silly disconnected. Like I guess Lady D kind of fits because she's like a less scary mr.X and Moreau is a pretty standard mutant guy, but like a guy with magneto powers? A girl who can bring dolls to life and a merchant that obviously can’t fit through a normal doorway but still magically teleports wherever you happen to be? Plus stylistically each level feels like it could’ve been it’s own game and kind of feels like they crammed a bunch of separate ideas together and hoped it would work. The only level that felt remotely scary was only like 10 mins of the actual game. RE7 was a far better horror game
Did honestly not expect that level of insight from you on Survival Horror. Props to you. Also, when you started talking about the music... I had the exact same track in mind you played.
Speaking of the music, I find ironic that my overall least favorite mainline game, the RE3 Remake, appears to be the only recent title to defy the trend of having almost no music.
@@underthemayo They didn't even give you a chance to explain lol I personally think the games good but so far in the video you're making pretty valid points about the game just handing you important items and the inventory being a bit too huge. Also, I can't lie, I did that exact method at 24:08 because I don't really have any music experience and was kind of surpised that it actually worked, I thought I glitched the game or something lol
What I cannot get over this game is the fact it actually has good gunplay imo, the lycans were pretty satisfying to fight, however, it just shows how much they never learned from previous entries that made these encounters so dynamic. Let's take a look back at REmake, 2make, and RE4, in REmake, it's a valid option to let enemies live another day for more bullets for boss fights, but then later on the zombies mutate into Crimson Heads which really raises up the stakes of whether you should really fight or not, same goes with the lickers + Mr.X. In RE4, while the design and approach is linear, you will be pressured by the fact enemies as the game progresses have a chance of mutating into more difficult forms. RE8 feels more like Clunky Doom, and there's a joke that Ethan is actually Doomguy. Lady Dimitrescu is also the worst stalker enemy for how boring she is. She's not intimidating, she's very generic, and you don't even get rewards for fighting her, she's more of an annoyance than a scary factor.
Yes.....
@@TheDisturbingPanda In the hardcore and VoS she's pretty quick, and her size combined with the creepy atmosphere of the castle makes it tense asf imo.

@Kiyoat that goes for every single "puzzle" in this game lol.
I love how Capcom were self-aware of the useless inventory; they added a challenge requiring you to not move any item in your inventory.
lmfao good observation
@@woulfhound everything acessible to the masses is bad
I achieved this not realizing moving things around in the inventory was always an option.

The reason the factory is hated is because players were used to just push forward without any thinking. Now suddenly the game asks you to even slightly use your head. Of course people are not having it.
Yeah I don't get why people hate the factory? I really didn't have a problem with it.

It's like you entered the Spencer Mansion through the guest house, then the main hall led to the lab.
that's actually hilarious
One thing you missed about the orange tile puzzle is that the lights actually turn green whenever a correct tile color is chosen, so its even easier than you what you said. You don't even need to look at the reference paper, just hit each tile until a green light pops up and so on.

same with RE4. village at least felt more like a RE game
no doubt. the game wasnt bad it just had some "bad" things about it especially when youre looking from a critiques perspective.
But why would you ever want a game to follow "a formula"? The RE Formula is ancient. Let the game evolve and branch out.
@@RainbowDollyPng because that's what successful franchises do. you want to keep the magic and the fans you have and gather new fans too. at the end a company wants to make as much money as possible, which is totally fine. evolving in the formula were things like the camera angles from fixed to OTS to first person, the quick turn, the crafting system and other quality of life improvements.

@@NinjapowerMS That's even more pathetic. I get it she's eye candy, but so is every hot social media influencer and pornstar on the internet.

You are actually right now that I think about it.
I really like RE7 and RE8 and I hope the cycle wont go like that this time.

RE7 was an Outlast clone and the story and theme was vastly grimmer and different from RE4

Amazingly stupid and just brings up how sad the franchise became. The original trilogy and remake trilogy are the only great true REs.
@@fosko7494 disagree with the last part
RE7 was a far better horror game
no :(
Did honestly not expect that level of insight from you on Survival Horror. Props to you. Also, when you started talking about the music... I had the exact same track in mind you played.
Speaking of the music, I find ironic that my overall least favorite mainline game, the RE3 Remake, appears to be the only recent title to defy the trend of having almost no music.
see when I watched Maiden I was impressed by the hall theme and was really excited to hear it in game but..... it was quiet :/
I can't wait for all the pissed off comments from people who haven't even watched all of the video yet since it came out 9 minutes ago
There's already so many lol.
@@underthemayo people these days are very impatient and hopeless. That is why there are pissed off comments even before their video starts
They’re everywhere
@@underthemayo They didn't even give you a chance to explain lol
I personally think the games good but so far in the video you're making pretty valid points about the game just handing you important items and the inventory being a bit too huge.
Also, I can't lie, I did that exact method at 24:08 because I don't really have any music experience and was kind of surpised that it actually worked, I thought I glitched the game or something lol
@@plea_sma_shmi5429 there's already a multi commenting psycho. There's always one.
Yes.....
I found her stalking more tense than Jack from RE7 tbh
@@mikeamber2528 I agree
@@mikeamber2528 how... I didn't feel tension by her in the slightest. She doesn't even walk fast
@@TheDisturbingPanda In the hardcore and VoS she's pretty quick, and her size combined with the creepy atmosphere of the castle makes it tense asf imo.
