For those seeing this video long after it was made:
    1) They have implemented a proper mechanics tutorial in the training room, finally, so all of my complaints have been addressed.
    2) My issue was never that "easy mode is too easy". It's that Normal mode (when lacking a mechanics practice option) was too frustrating and confusing, which turned off a lot of players. And instead of addressing that, they just made an easy mode for people who were struggling. And that was NOT a good solution. But now, we have the exact thing I was asking for, so easy mode is fine.

@@mackinblack i suggest reading the guys comment. There's nothing wrong with an easier option for different skill levels, what's wrong is when said easy mode hampers the experience the developer intended. Remember difficulty is less about numbers & more about tactics. Dark souls is difficult not just because of how hard enemies hit, but because of the mechanics of the game. Being slightly over leveled doesn't mean much if you don't know how to pace fights properly.
I absolutely sucked at Bloodborne, i still love the game but i had the most fun with it when I did the memory leak glitch. I still got my ass handed to me more often then not, but dying less let me learn more & a lot faster too. Personally, I find any attempt to "rebalance" game difficulty around health pools and/or damage scaling too cheap and ineffective on "easy" end and too frustrating on "hard" end. Mashing through Easy mode has already been mentioned, but even on Master mode making the player a glass cannon leads to (sometimes) dying on bosses even before boss chain ends, leaving the player unable to fully understand their particular mistake and learn from it. Moreso in case of structure being tied to the health pool, also leaving less room to test the enemy strings through blocking.
One of the things previously / on Regular difficulty was when I made a few mistakes but still managed to pull off a fight with a tiny bit of health left; for me, the basic HP/damage relation was already near-perfect.
As such, IMO much better solution would be to remove HP and damage scaling from difficulty setting, but instead introduce it as an optional modifier for those who explicitly want it. Like in Doom Eternal's (well, who would've thought) "Ultra-nightmare", DMC's "Dante Must Die", or "Ironman" checkbox from a bunch of other games.

This reminds me of Sekiro perfectly. A perfect example of a game teaching you it's mechanics perfectly, facing bosses that seem impossible at first but always have a "click moment". Playing Sekiro would be impossible without learning the deflect system, along with a lot of other systems, but the game will methodically stop you in your tracks and forces you to learn its combat with a mini-boss before using what you've learnt on a actual boss. A lot of people quit that game, but the people that didn't truly felt accomplished after ever fight. It has it's issues but they never implemented a cheap easy mode for people to come back and learn the game in a easier difficulty, it never needed one because of how well it taught you.

The best easy mode I ever played was Doom Eternal. It was a game I would never have played, because I don't like first person shooters and I am therefore bad at them. It's a famously difficult game.
But someone told me that easy mode in Doom Eternal was still a solid game for complete noobs and I trusted them. They were right. I still had to weapon swap. Upgrades were still meaningful. I still found myself needing to jump around the environment, but when I missed ten shoots or got flustered, I wasn't dead before I could understand why that was happening and how to correct it. It was perfect. It was the same game, just with a wider margin of error so I had more time to absorb the lessons of mistakes.
That's what I'd want from an easy mode: something that let's a dumb dumb like me have a good learning window and not just get blitzed with no understanding why. And I think you have articulated all that very well here. I loved Doom Eternal, but if it wasn't for that easy mode being so lovingly made, I would never have played it through.

Funny that you bring souls games into the "How to Easy Mode" discussion. They actually sort of did that in Elden Ring introducing a new mechanic called "Spirit Calling" where you can summon spirits (NPCs) to aid you in certain fights (including bosses). Some of those spirits can be really OP if used right. You still have to find them in the game to be able to use and to make them stronger you will have to spend special items and some of your exp/money (also what you use to level up). So you can make the game more accessible for you but you still have to work a bit for it. And what's best: no mode to choose in the beginning of the game, that's a mechanic present since the start and you can just ignore it if you want.

@@destroy141 mayo’s whole point about his ideal easy mode is so peeps like you (physical disabilities and time limitations to game) can actually experience the game and have fun. The whole point of the game is fighting and using the game’s combat systems to have fun, and through that you will naturally get better, it’s part of sifu’s game design.
However, Sifu’s easy mode allows players to just brute force mash and not actually engage with their combat system. Why is this a problem? Because by not providing any motivation to experiment with the combat system and move away from mashing, players are essentially experiencing a worse game that isn’t as fun. This isn’t on the fault of the player, it’s on the developers for allowing peeps to brute force mash in easy mode and failing to explain the core mechanics of the game.
Now if you PREFER to brute force mash over engaging with sifu’s gameplay, how is that any different to clicking on cookie clicker? I can bet 1000 bucks that if sifu’s easy mode actually taught its core mechanics to the player and made it so u can’t brute force mash to progress, you would have more fun experimenting with the combat system than simply mashing ur way to beat the game.
I’ll say this again - you only prefer mashing through the game because sifu fails to teach its core mechanics, and if it did so organically in easy mode while still having consequences for dying, you would have way more fun playing that way. I bet my life on it

The way it keeps the main mechanics of the game all intact, as well as the design of combat encounters, and instead decreases AI precision, really teaches new players how to play properly.

Best way to implement easy mode would be to just reduce the enemy's damage numbers while retaining their ai behaviour. Only giving players more leeway to take more damage so they have the opportunity to learn.

NGL, some people just don't want to "learn" things when they play a game. Seriously. I am not saying the game is bad for it, but rather the game doesn't appeal to the player. I put Doom Eternal down because I don't want to learn anything (but I plan on coming back later) like figuring out weapon combos and such because I don't "feel" like it. If this bad game? Not in the slightest (the game is still amazing based on what i played so far). What I don't understand is people trying to make every genre of game appeal to them. We don't see this in movies books or TV shows so why are games any different?
What I do agree with, though, is giving a player the tools they need to succeed in the game. This is largely what this video is about, but the other half is the player actually wanting to engage with those tools; this is why I am, sometimes, not a fan of easy mode as some don't even accomplish this (to get you to engage with the tools you can work with).

As a game dev, I don't add difficulty options for one simple reason:
They hide some design flaws in the game.
For example, in the current game I am making, I added an easy mode for one tester, what happened?
He brute forced his way through the game, without learning how to properly play, and got bored at 25% of the game because he just keep repeating the same things again and again, and at this point, he just doesn't have the skills required to progress.
Now I am not even sure, did he not learn the game because of the easy mode, or because the game didn't teach its mechanics well?
In the other hand, other testers made me realize that some mechanics need to be taught better, because there isn't some less hp mode that hides the underlying design flaws.

Strange comparison, but this easy mode discussion reminds me of the Bros. Attacks from Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. You had three difficulty modes for the inputs:
-Easiest had time slow down and give you button prompts for the inputs.
    -Medium removed the slowed time
-Hardest had neither slow time nor button prompts.
You could swap between them at any time in the battle menu, and you weren't penalized for using the easier options. If you used the move enough on the hardest setting however, you unlocked the advanced version of the move. An alternate button input with different effects.
It fits the description perfectly, you're given a training option and a reward for mastering the game.

    • @studiodaeera
      @studiodaeera 2 роки тому

"You weren't penalized for using the easier options" but the easier options cost more Bros. Points (BP).
Technically it is a type of punishment as there is a literal cost associated with sticking to the easier modes. That's the reason (outside of having just practiced it enough) that you would try the harder modes, you get to use more Bros. Attacks during battles before running out of points.

Wow, lots to process here. Great video though. First, I totally agree that the game doesn’t do a great job of introducing and teaching its mechanics. I still need to get better at stunning then throwing enemies for instance. I also agree that I would love to see a difficulty level in between what’s there now for an easy mode, and some thing that actually eases you in and teaches you the game better. I still want a challenge, but may be a little more fair one.
As a legally blind gamer myself, and someone who advocates for accessibility features in games, I largely agree with you. If I’m going to bother to play a game, I still want to play the core gameplay, and experience some of the core challenge that the title offers, just may be a little more forgiving. I don’t have a problem offering an easy difficulty setting the way Sifu did as an option, because there are literally people who have mobility impairments that may truly prevent them from doing precise button timing presses, or things like that look at Bayonetta that has a one handed or one button combat mode. I’m fine with offering things like that, and maybe being able to adjust each of these types of settings individually could really help tailor the difficulty for what a person actually needs.
Despite trying quite a bit, I am still having trouble with the second level of the game, but haven’t given up yet. I will likely try the easy mode just to try it, but do want to truly learn to play the game, because it feels awesome when you finally figure it out. Just a few thoughts.

The ageing mechanic is greatly diminished but just because rejuvenating years is there doesn't mean players are going to use them.
Switching between the two has honestly made me realise how little changes in terms of encounter design on Disciple. You've got a lower health bar, they hit harder but they're all in the same starting positions and attacks. Boss patterns do not change. Permanent unlocks carry over so someone coming to Disciple after their Student run are in a much better position to tackle the Sifu experience. Consider that a potential timesaver. I enjoyed your initial review of Sifu and agree with your points in this video. It is quite a shame how easy mode was implemented. I definitely agree that lowering the enemy aggression would have been all that was necessary. Something I noticed when playing master mode was that I was being trashed by standard fights more often just because more enemies were attacking faster.
What do you think of granular difficulty settings like in Celeste where the player can customize specific aspects of the difficulty? Raises a similar fear of people giving up on a difficulty and lowering it, but I think that's an inescapable sacrifice in the name of accessibility.
I think the biggest thing devs must do in regards to difficulty is communicate to players how they intend them to go through their game but also communicate how exactly shifting the difficulty one way or another might affect their experience.

Therefore I think it is really good to have an easy mode that is this easy, it lets even a 50 year old, who has never even touched a controller, play the game and have some fun. While also learning the controller layout, different controls and combo’s, reaction time for defense etc.
It’s the responsibility for the player to recognize they have learned enough to play on a higher difficulty and so the cycle continues.

Makes me think of story mode in Baldurs Gate EE (specifically BG 2).
The game normally has easy, normal and core rules difficulty and 2 additional hard modes.
Even in easy mode, you need to think and prepare: Going into a cave full of trolls? Prepare fire and acid. Going into a fight with vampires? Cast negative energy protection. Going into a fight with anything that can charm or fear? Cast the fitting protections. Don't have +3 weapons for that nasty devil fight? Better go get one.
In the additional story mode though, every attack automatically deals acid and magic damage, making trolls and demons trivial. And all those nasty status conditions (fear, negative levels, charm, etc.) don't affect the heroes anymore. Just sad.
It doesn't annoy me too much, because it can be turned on and off at any time.
BG explains its rules pretty well though, so it really isn't necessary.

ultimately this video is well put and makes a good case against easy modes faults. the main problem really is the lack of a death counter and de aging. I think if they wanted to limit the death counter that be one thing, maybe cap so it doesn't go higher then 3 or 5. stay in line with giving players more wiggle room while making them still deal with the consequences of dying over and over.
with that said I still think easy has potential to bring in new players, and bring back old one. I think trying to get that age 20 run will still compel people to learn the game.

    • @Ageleszly

The typical run of the mill player will not create extra challenges. It's a one and done thing if they are at this point they could just play normal. There were statistics who have shown that over over 86% players quit a game once they saw the credits and there is nothing else to unlock.
Maybe they could just cut the game after museum on student, like these old Contra games, just that there would be an extrinsic incentive to run the extra mile, but in our human psychology we are optimum driven and take the path of least resistenance if handed out to us. Most players don't are complicated they don't so much about consequence of an too easy difficulty mode and so they won't reflect about the parts that might be the fault for an too boring experience. This is basically worst type of implemenation of an "easy" mode I have ever seen, especially because the description says that the experience would be "still challenging"

I'm aware of the average player, that doesn't mean there aren't player that the easy mode couldn't help get deeper into the game. i am one such player. even if its a small amount of players, if easy (as if) can help someone enjoy sifu enough to wanna keep replaying it (a big part of sifu, thats a good thing and totally possible. theres still the age system, there still a community that they could get into afterwards to learn more about the game, and community that just through its existence will encourage new players to wanna get better, like the souls game. also most games are one and done for people cuz they are much longer and aren't designed to be replayed like sifu, and for those who would only play it once and be done. also the path of least resistance thing isn't true, gamers push themselves all the time, most games have difficulty mode and if you logic was true 86% would only play easy mode, but I can guarantee most people play atleast normal or higher. when given the choice players will choose what is appropriate to their skill level or what they perceive it to be. people want challenge, they just want it relative to their skills. which is tricky, but the main problem with easy they gimped the aging system completely so now you can die and insane amount of time and still beat the game, the enemies themselves are still tough though and you wil still die, which still leaves an incentive to get good. difficulty isn't the only way to people want to learn the game and though easy mode could have done a much better job, sifu has fun enough mechanics that I can still see and easy mode bring less skill players into the fold, to the point that want to challenge themselve

Regarding an easy mode for dark souls I agree with you that the second option is better than the first option. But here's the thing at least with the first dark souls that easy mode already exist, it's called magic. And no I'm not talking in a derogatory manner saying if you used x build you didn't finish the game. I mean literally the game is about memorizing attack patterns, reaction, punishing the enemy and resource management. Magic allows you to attack farther away without a big detriment to damage, so by being farther away the enemy has less attack options against you and you have more time to react. Plus once you dodge that attack or combo is easier to punish the enemy with magic due to it's range and the lock on system. The only added difficulty is that you now have to manage spells alongside your estus, but is a really cheap price to pay to be honest. The real problem that I see with magic as an easy mode is that the game doesn't do anything to show you that, so unless you are looking at a guide or someone else tells you, most likely you will go for a knight build like everyone else does.

I hear you out on the complaints Mayo. But it’s not over yet. They made somethings better and master mode is actually pretty good even without the remixed enemies. And it’s just the 1st major update. They will continue to learn and maybe in the next update and training mode will be even better! Hopefully the camera system will be fixed as well. Easy mode does suck though.

And initially I thought “What’s wrong? It doesn’t take away from the base game. It’s still there” But I agree that it shouldn’t be a priority for the devs if there’s already problems of the game.

I just played SIFU for the first time today.
You expressed exactly my experience with the game on normal mode. I blitzed through the first stage no problem, even getting the achievements for clearing rooms quickly and playing well.
Fajar gave me some difficulty and it felt like I had to just brute force him.
Then most of stage 2 felt the same way as Fajar--like I was brute forcing it.
I lost too many years to even start to approach stage 3, so I was left with the idea of "Great, I guess I just have to go replay that stage until I can clear with a lower age".
So I figured, "Ah, I need to learn how parrying, dodging, and avoidance actually works."
I watched a few videos on it.
I went back in and the Fajar fight was now really boring--dodging and baiting into the same punishes over and over.
Realizing how the game *wants* to be played, I just bounced off of it. Dodging and parrying in SIFU didn't feel good to me.
So I dropped the game. Even after watching this, I don't want to return to it.

@@underthemayoThe offensive options felt good enough (even if some enemies absolutely no-sell your hits, god it feels awful to running sweep kick and the enemy just stands there like "okay.") but the defensive options always felt like I was doing something wrong. Especially when the stronger enemies start to smack me around, leaving me feeling like "Did I parry wrong? Should I just have used the R2 to distance that whole string?" Then there's moves like Fajar's ambushing attack that have such absurd tracking that the R2 isn't the solution and gets punished every time. Feels bad. I didn't have this sort of trouble with Sekiro, though that game is much clearer in its signaling of attacks and success in parrying/evasion. I don't know. Part of me wants to play more and see if that helps things click but it feels rough to have spent a night with it and just been frustrated.

Mr. mod maker man here. regarding your issues with the game. it is disappointing how Sloclap hasn't fixed some of the core issues in the recent update. I'd highly recommend joining the modding community on PC as there are ways to fix some of the remaining or new issues (Like the camera, switching between difficulty modes, adjusting easy mode, etc.). Though certain things like attack magnetism I have yet to figure out, when I do I'll release a mod to adjust it. tutorialization is still a huge issue. I only know about most of the mechanics in the game since i've been obsessively modding since shortly after release, and there is a lot unexplained outside of just the basics. the game never gives you info on knockdown thresholds, stun mechanics, dizzy buildup, evasion frames on certain attacks, etc. To be fair the game doesn't utilize all its mechanics to the fullest extent to begin with. Even in the Hard mode there's still a fairly basic dominant strategy outside of the boss fights with 50/50s, it's just that Hard mode is more punishing.
It feels like this game's easy mode is ultra easy and hard mode is just a much more punishing normal mode outside of the boss fights. They should've made things like enemy aggression, combo variety, and stat changes 3 different settings. So if someone wanted a hard but less punishing game they could just make themselves die slower, or if someone wanted a punishing but easier game they could just lower enemy aggression or combo variety and everything in between. Obviously the stat part shouldn't remove things like the scaling death count, but setting a cap to the scaling to be around 5 without having the -5 age shrine purchase wouldn't ruin the game's difficulty.
Through modding I've figured out a lot of things mechanically and can even adjust enemies to be more/less difficult in ways other than adjusting damage. Right now i'm working on a rework that changes a lot. Once it's released I'll be looking more into other aspects of the game to see what other stuff i can adjust to improve the overall experience. Hopefully the devs can improve things we can't adjust currently like tutorialization. Any time i see a new player and explain to them how stuff works the game clicks, but if they aren't told explicitly how things work they die over and over.

I think the game that perfected easy mode is cuphead , it provides less overwhelming version of the main experience so you can learn the game and some of the boss patterns but you can't finish the game with it , the game literally tells you go back and beat all the bosses in normal so you can unlock the finale which force players to actually play the game the way intended that's of course if they want more from the game and if they don't they just got their easy mode so they shouldn't complain , sifu should have done the same

I’m not against easy modes in general, I don’t play every game on hard, but I feel like for a game that was marketed as ‘hey come check out this challenge and see if you can beat it’ to then turn around and give in to an easy mode kind of takes away the thing that made it interesting in the first place. It also destroys any chance of a community forming around it in the way that Souls or Returnal or others have gained when not everyone has the same experience with the game. It’s now just another beatemup with multiple difficulty modes, and it’s one of hundreds if not thousands.
I tried to relay this feeling in a PS5 group recently and was promptly shit on as ‘being elitist’. When that was not my point at all.

It's people like you and reviewers that marketed the game like that. Their point was never difficulty just like Dark Souls. But people turned this game into a dick measuring contest again and it's was a really easy game on normal. It's always interesting how elitist communities form around games without a difficulty select that aren't really hard when you consider that there are much harder games with a lower skill floor in easy modes.
And not everyone will have the same experience? Thank god? Isn't that good thing? Where is this "everyone must enjoy the game the way I do coming from"? Easy mode doesn't effect me, I like the game because of it's interesting take on defense not because I feel like a big boy when I play it but it clearly effects your ego and that's the real problem but it's a you problem.
