- New brake calipers and rotors look great on any car… until the weather causes them to rust.
Today I’m going to paint my TSX’s new calipers and rotors before installing them, to keep them looking as good as new.
I used VHT High Temperature Header Primer and Brake Paint, both designed to withstand the heat produced by brakes.
6 month after winter update: • Painted Rear Calipers ...

Best video I've seen for rust proofing rotors.
Best video in its class so far!
Thanks for being a legend.
I like the template idea!!
I just spotted no fewer than 17 operations known to the state of California to cause cancer! LOL. They look good. I need to redo mine on the Miata one of these days, soon!
Proper job 👍
GREAT TIPS IM GLAD YOU STILL HAVE THE YOTA I SOLD MINE BUT IM LOOKING FOR A 4 RUNNER NOW SAME GEN .KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK 👍🏻💪🏻✌️
I'd love to find a clean first gen 4runner around here... good luck! Post a video if you get one.
You gave a lot of great ideas on painting calipers and rotors .
Thanks! I've been sub'd to your channel for a while now. Great detailing vids!
@@6thGearGarage Thanks my friend appreciate it
As a rocket scientist, that is rocket science quality.
Brilliant UA-cam thanks bro
You’re welcome 👍
Hey, how does the paint hold up to brake cleaner and vrake dust?
Brake dust is no problem but I am unsure about brake cleaner, as I never tested that. Here's how these looked after an Ohio winter: ua-cam.com/video/zXIrBxzQ51w/v-deo.html
Do you need to put clear coat after the paint ?
I did not but you could. Just use a high heat clear coat.
I will be interested to see how this holds up, 'for I too, live in the rust belt......
Me too, it may be a complete waste of time. But at least it's my time and not yours! It's been a few weeks and no rust yet with driving in rain... but winter will be the real test.
6th Gear Garage Eh, it’s never really a wast of time. If it doesn’t work, you have an experience to pass on and save someone else .
And if it does work, one less thing to deal with next year.
it’s a win-win.
it actually did hold ok.
Save yourself the aggravation. Mine began rusting after about a year. WASTE of time and $.
how did it hold up over the winter?
Not perfect, but could have been a lot worse. I'm going to do an update video when I swap over to summer wheels here soon.
Can you paint the calipers while on the car and still tape up i think its called the piston...or is it better to remove them like you did
You can do it that way, but I prefer to remove the calipers to clean them better and get better paint coverage. But if you're not replacing them already, that's a lot of extra work. Dupli-color make a brush-on caliper paint kit which works well if the calipers are still on the car.
@@6thGearGarage yeh exactly. I mean theyre still good so no replacement yet. Ive only seen videos with spray paint so i didnt realize there was a brush for them too. Its definitely a more controlled application of the paint
@@pure555 I did the Duplicolor brush on caliper paint on my 85 Toyota and it has held up great.
@@6thGearGarage thanks for dupli color brush idea
Shouldn't u also have removed the rust on the disk behind before u mounted it ? wont that rust attack the fixed part right away if not ?
No, cleaning the hub is not needed, as these always have some surface rust. Here is how they looked after 6 months of winter: ua-cam.com/video/zXIrBxzQ51w/v-deo.html
@@6thGearGarage Looks ok , i dont get why customers dont demand rust free parts for their cars and why they are not produced tho....
@@Revelation13-8 here in Ohio, everything rusts because of road salt. Sadly, it’s the norm around here.
Wouldn’t the holes and slots rust since they weren’t covered?
I would think so but for some reason they didn't.
Can you provide the link for both?
You can buy the paint at local parts stores like Napa, Autozone, advance, Oriley's
@@6thGearGarage thanks. I was actually asking about the rotor and caliper.. my appolgies.
@@dexteranthony8866 I bought them on Amazon. I don't save the links in videos because the links can stop working after a while. When I bought the parts, I searched for "2006 Acura TSX calipers rotors rear" and they came as a kit with pads too.
No clear coat needed?
You could also add a clear coat for extra gloss and durability, just be sure it is a high temperature clear coat.
just leaving stickes lol
Don't even worry about covering brake surfaces. .10mm of paint only gonna affect first time braking
I heard that the paint can clog the surface of the brake pads.
Are you blind? He has drilled and slotted rotors. You need to mask those, braking won't take it off from in those.
I wouldn't paint the area on the rotors that touches the brake pad just in case it contaminates the pads.
Is it wrong to use Masking tape instead of cardboard?
Nope, Masking tape works great!
@@6thGearGarage great! Cause I just did it 😂 I wish we could post pictures here
Thanks for your time and wisdom try not to speak the same style as Chris Fix.
Loll
Can I just pray silver paint over the rust whilst it’s still on the car
You can, but it won't bond well and will not last as long.
