Just some tips I want to share as a cars/aircraft painter.. I would prefer masking with paper instead of bags. Over spray on the bags causes flakes. When you remove the bags, it will flake onto your caliper but it's a caliper so it's okay. However, If you were to paint a car then mask it with paper. It sucks sanding flakes out. Also, if you boil a pot of hot water and put your clear coat can in it, the spray is amazing. it creates a cloud like with no spitting.. Great job.
Hey, neighbor! (fellow Georgian here). Excellent video. I'm planning to do this for my dark grey Subaru Crosstrek in that very orange to match the interior accents. This video was very helpful since I do want to remove the pads and hardware, but don't want to pull the calipers off completely. I will wait until I need new pads.
@@dial2fast anytime! I watched a video before seeing yours and I’m so glad I watched it. More instruction, more small details, better in every way. Made me want to start my project immediately. Lol
When applying the decal, Apply the center first then work your way to the outside. That way there is no chance for bubbles to remain and overall have the smoothest finish. Make sure you press down evenly to make sure it's set to the surface well before removing the applicator. You can see that dial2fast had a few instances of it still sticking to the applicator. Wait till the paint is dry enough too!! But try to put the clearcoat on within 30 minutes depending on your environment to have a good bond between basecoat and clearcoat. One day I may set my car up in a body shop I have access too, but lay the paint from cans, unless I can get high heat paint for shop sprayers.
I've seen other examples where a base coat of black (or whatever color you want the decal lettering to be) is applied over the primer, then once it dries the decal goes in place, followed by the base color, overlapping the decal in the process. While the paint is still wet a precision tool like an exacto knife is used to pry up the decal and revealing the black under layer. I imagine a lot of patience is required but that's how I saw it done in another video where a man was restoring the calipers on a Mazda Miata.
Mistah J a cleaner stencil look without any vinyl left. More advanced method but surgical hands and patience will do the trick with that. Thanks for sharing. That’s my comment on an old account
One good trick when masking off sharp edges is to use a flat hammer and lightly tap the metal edges. It will cut the masking tape off right in the spots you need masked. Great video!
One of the cleanest videos ive seen! Colour is amazing also man well done :D I never thought it needs so many layers of paint...Im taking mine for powder coating coz i started to hate simple paint. Very easily get scratched
Great attention to detail! I'll be doing this with my Mazdaspeed 6 and my wife's Kia Sedona next Spring when it warms up. Will also do the decal option as well for both cars...but only after I smoother it out with my Makita die grinder like you did with the stone and drill. Great idea using the engine enamel to achieve a great selection of colors. Well done and great video quality.
Really good job mate! I like this color a lot!!! Not so yellowish, a bit orangish, perfect for me. :) Thanks for sharing! Greetings from Hungary! ;) And of course stay healthy!
Great paint job 😎 btw. From my past experiences that won't last too long. All the heat cycles will allow all the paint to start peeling. Add that to living in the salt belt and the calipers are done as far as looks. So i went the way of powder coating and that was 16 years ago now and still looks brand new. I got them done as they needed to be bead blasted.
Good clear instructions with following examples of how to do the job well. I noted the caution to be sure to do the initial cleaning of the break caliper really well. Thanks for the good camera and audio.
I love the VHT brands. Works very well and a really nice finish. Nice job! I see you are stickler for perfection! Awesome, and thanks for sharing sir!! Cheers from Motown.
A very professional job. Outstanding and quick DIY video. Thank you! Those calipers, after the painting them, appear to me as if they came from a store and look brand new! Great job brotha and once again thank you for sharing.
Very very good result and very good technique! I am thinking about one more step to remove the grainy structure of the caliper. Will it helps if the primer is sanded between the coats? Is it going to need very thick primer coat for sanding? I want to achieve surface as smooth as possible.
This is a great video - thumbs up! I had mine done by a pro, took 4 hours as they did not remove the calipers and thank goodness the weather is colder which made the drying time faster. As you said, so long as the areas where needed to be covered are well covered, the job will still look great (which it did in mine). However, there a tad bit of overspray that I noticed (which you will only really see if you look very close). Nonetheless, whatever method is used I think it will do as great.
Diamond Kote clear is really good for calipers, better than an aerosol. Goes on really thick and stays slightly soft when its dry to absorb stone impacts rather than chipping. Its also very chemical resistant
This looks so sick i have 18N/M Platinum white i have 22s kmc prism black fitted with black disks machine drilled i need a crazy dope color for these calpers or should i change calipers thanks for the vid love it
Great video man i just purchased a new caliper off amazon and it appears to be cast.. the color is a shiny silver. I am not sure if they spray painted it or it has some zinc coating that I hear a lot about... was wondering what is the best way to get paint to adhere to this. I have tried using just caliper paint and it just beaded off like water... I also sanded before hand and it did nothing. I was wondering if I need a special primer or will any high heat primer work? Like vht engine enaml primer?
What can you say, excellent job and great info and tips. Can not complain about any stage personally. Very informative and like how you are given option for results rather than what had only been done In the clip. A* 👍👌
Beautiful job. I just got new Slotted and drilled Rotors all around for my ecoboost explorer. Would like to this in ford blue but not sure I have the time. Thanks for taking the time & posting 👍
I have always assumed that the unique thing about caliper paint as opposed to other paints is that it is resistant to brake fluid. I learned the hard way many years ago that most paint is dissolved by brake fluid when I spilled some on a new Corvette.
Yes, its a totally different prospect if your car is few years old and your calipers are in bad shape. I wanted mine to look brand new so I took them off to do them which is a lot of work. But the result was good.
How has the vinyl sticker held up since the application? Would you recommend the stickers or a stencil to paint the name/logo on, instead (once the paint cures, so you don't have that problem you had)?

@@IvanM-fu8ih I tried base paint as well but it doesn't quit work the same as clear.
Finally someone who does it the right way. So many hack jobs who paint pads and everything else. Result looked really nice. Very clean
Sanding the line left by the cast is brilliant. Really cool. It’s all in the details. And I love the colour.

Prep work is 90% of the job and you did a mighty fine job! Your decals would never have looked as clean had you not ground that seam. Top notch!
Best caliper painting video on youtube----- period

Nissan uses this colour for a lot of their sport models (350z, G35, R35 etc.) I'm going to do the same, it looks great.

very nice work and easy to paint also nice color. I think I going to paint my mind the same color
If you want a smoother finish so the paint and clear pop, I'd also use a hight heat primer....Otherwise, clean walkthrough and process. Great Job!
It's engine primer, that is high heat. Up to 550F° lol.. I think it looks that way because the calipers metal finish itself isn't all that smooth!
