Staying Overnight in a Remote Japanese Temple

- We’re staying at a Shukubo, which is a lodging inside a temple. Sanrakuso is located in the mountains of Mt Daisen in Shimane prefecture. We’ll experience Shojin Ryori, which is a type of vegetarian cuisine traditionally served at Japanese Buddhist temples.
We also wake up to a session of meditation called Zazen, as well as a vegetarian breakfast served to us by the chief priest of the temple.

We "accidentally" went to a Buddhist vegetarian restaurant in Nikko once. It was one of the finest meals we ever had. It was very similar to yours. It was where we were introduced to Yuba. Yuba is amazing. It came a number of ways. When we arrived it was about 7.30. Back then we had no idea that in small towns like Nikko many restaurants are closed by 7.30. Our family turned up and they were so friendly and accommodating. They re-opened just for us and we had our first buddhist vegetarian meal. It was amazing. Your video brought back so many happy memories. Thank you.
So happy you had a nice experience and enjoyed shojin ryori.
It sounds as wonderful as this one featured in TabiEats. Can you tell me which one in Nikko it was?
@@sa7017 It was some time ago but I managed to find my old blog post about it 😀 It's called Gyoshintei. And it was fabulous. I was just reading that it closes earlier than I thought - 7pm. Good luck!
As a vegetarian, I will say that those meals looked absolutely amazing! I love how they use as much as they can of the vegetables so there is no waste. The snowy view out the window was so pretty. A reset or recharge is what we could all use once in a while, I think. Thanks for the map and for sharing this experience with us! I enjoyed this video immensely! 😊
Have you ever stayed overnight at a temple? This was our first time and we're happy that we had the opportunity to do so. We hope you enjoy this one! Thanks for watching!
You should go to Koyasan
The first time I visited Japan with a group of other American students we spent two days on Koyasan in Wakayama. I can't remember all the food details but I do fondly remember eating a variety of textures and colors of tofu. The monks and student monks (high school) were awesome and we even got to play them in a softball game. Happy memories.
Staying at the temple and shojin ryori must have been a truly incredible experience.
As far as I know, "Shojin Ryori" means something like "eat like the monks".
Probably my greatest dream would come true if I too could have this experience.
Yes. I stayed overnight and received zazen instruction, attended the monks’ early morning ceremony at Eheiji Monastery in western Honshu. Eheiji is the Head Soto Zen monastery founded by Dogen Zenji.
What a beautiful place with a lovely spiritual aura. It is so good to see Shinichi and Satoshi being so grateful. Toward the end of the video Satoshi said, “Plant is also life so no wasting every single life.”. Thank you, Satoshi that really touched my heart!
Yayyyy! I've been waiting for more veggie videos and this is top notch. So exciting and yummy looking.
I think this goes on the bucket list. It’s lovely to enjoy one of your videos knowing I can eat everything in it :-)
The effort people put into stuff was deep. Good show
Looked like a great experience. Thanks for taking us along!
Literally everything in this video is my favorite: the peace, tranquility, and remote beauty of Sanrakuso at the foot of Mt. Daisen; Zazen; and Shojin Ryori. Before I became ill, I'd scheduled a long hike through the Nihon Arupusu (Japanese Alps) which went from one Buddhist temple to another. It was _very_ disappointing to give up my dream trip, but now you've allowed me to have a taste of it through you. Thank you once again, Shinichi and Satoshi, for sharing an amazing experience I could not have otherwise. ❤️❤️
Thank you for the kind words and so sorry to hear that you became ill. I do hope you are able to travel again in the near future. We look forward to welcoming you here.
@@TabiEats Oh, that's so gracious! There's nothing I'd like better than coming to Japan and meeting you two. We'd have a blast! The doctors, unfortunately, gave me an "expiration date." Happily, I've exceeded it by several years so far, and hope and intend to keep passing those open windows. 😊
@@Scriptor13
I hope and pray for you that you will be many, many years past your "expiration date" date. And also that one day you can travel to Japan - to be able to meet Shinichi & Satoshi for example.
@@Guidance_Association You are so very kind, Peter. Thank you! I hope that your life is filled with the good things you deserve. 🫂
I appreciate the maps at the start of the video. This was a really good program. Thanks.
Delicious food in an amazingly calm place.
I am always blown away by how precise and beautiful Japanese food is!
Hi Shinichi and Satoshi good to see you wow look at all that snow 🌨️ love your room the veiws was awesome thanks for taking me along there are so much history there take care stay safe and keep warm ❣️☺️😊❤️😘🤩🥰😘👌
Such a wonderful experience, thank you for sharing with us. I really appreciate the addition of a map, I always Google your location before watching your videos.
Glad you enjoyed this video and the map addition! We'll be doing more of that in future videos.
Satoshi was so excited here! Never seen him be so animated! Love it! Glad you two enjoyed your time! 💗
My, that looks like a wonderful experience.
The way you guys always describe the foods - I can never sit down and watch your video without having a snack myself 😅 This temple looks lovely, very tranquil! Great video!
I loved Satoshi’s little dance!
Thank you for sharing this experience with us! :) I practice Zazen every morning. I was so happy to watch you guys doing the same. I'm a fan of your work, a constant viewer and a long-time follower. I hope to be able to visit Japan one day. Hugs from Portugal!
Thank you. We hope to practice zazen more often at home.
@@TabiEats that's amazing! I wish you all the best guys ❤️🌟
@@TabiEats some temples offer online participation, such as Tokozenji in Kanazawa, and Engakuji in Kamakura. It's very helpful :)
That dinner and breakfast look absolutely delicious, thank you so much for sharing this experience with us! Even if you’re not vegetarian or vegan, I highly recommend anyone visiting Japan in the future to try Shojin Ryori cuisine! I got to try so many different seasonal ingredients, textures and flavours which I would have missed out on otherwise. It introduced me to a lot of traditional Japanese foods and dishes such as a variety of tsukemono pickled vegetables, yuba tofu skin, sesame tofu and nasu dengaku which is grilled eggplant with sweet miso sauce. I enjoyed nasu dengaku so much, I frequently re-create the dish at home now. Even if you can’t stay overnight at a Shukubo temple lodging, Shigetsu restaurant inside the grounds of Tenryu-ji temple in Kyoto is a very accessible place for you to try a delicious Shojin Ryori meal! 😊
I stayed at a temple in Koyasan. It was not nearly as luxurious as yours but a very authentic experience! I joined the monks at their 6am morning practice. Highly recommend Koyasan for anyone looking for an immersive Buddhist experience.
This looks like it would be an amazing experience. Thanks for sharing it with us!
I really enjoyed this video it was relaxing and interesting . THANKYOU BOTH !
Thank you!
A lovely couple!! 🤗🤗
Who could miss Satoshi's resemblance to Bodhidharma!
*Needs bigger earlobes 😁
@@deanzaZZR and Satoshi hasn't cut off his eyelids to stay awake when he is a super taster of the finest brewed coffees. Satoshi also has the Zen warm heart without the bitterness. Maybe that little bit of bitterness that makes the flavor right. And no cinnamon or he will politely pass. We sure enjoy every upload!
This looked amazing to try. Beautiful.
Amazing!!!👏👏👏👏👏
Even though you were there when everything was covered in snow, I live in Virginia USA and we have a very humid, hot summer. I think this cuisine would make perfect summer meals, it seems to be filling but also very light and kind to the digestion. I will have to try finding some recipes. Thank you for sharing this wonderful place, restful for body and spirit.
What an amazing and beautiful experience. Thank you for sharing.
I absolutely enjoyed this video, it’s soooo refreshing. I’ve had vegetarian meals countless times but I’ve yet to experience a full course meal served that way. Tbh, I feel healthier already just by watching you guys eat😄
Thank you sharing this experience. Zazen and shojin ryori.
Once again a very good video - as was to be expected from you.
I hope one day I can realize my dream of having a market stall (my PopUp_Store with austrian sweets) at a Japanese Christmas market. Then I would finally be able to visit you again.
Catching up on your videos. Thank you so much for them!
Thank you so much. Happy that you are enjoying them!
Thank you so much. I have been curious about this cuisine and it made me happy to experience it with you both ♥️
You both look very relaxed and peaceful after your time at the temple. I hope you can go there again.
I would love to do this!!!❤
stunningly beautiful!
Delicious food and the area looks so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
This takes me back to a time when I got to eat at a small inn in a mountainous region in Japan! The woman who ran the inn cooked a variety of dishes for us that looked very similar to some of the dishes you all ate here! One thing she cooked was tempura "weeds" from her garden! Some of them looked like the seri, so maybe there was some of that in there that she just called "weeds," but I do think some were just run of the mill garden overgrowth that she 100% cooked up for us... There were also beans that looked like those in the takiawase you two ate, prepared in what appears to be a similar way by my memory, as well as some takikomi gohan that looked a lot like the daisen takikomi gohan you two ate... So. Much. Great. Food - lots of it that you don't necessarily see being featured by foreigners in Japan. Thanks for taking us to places like this! I'm so glad this channel exists! Thanks for sharing great food and interesting places
Thanks for sharing your experience with us💓 I was so excited about the food diversity and perfect presentation!!
Hey just wanted to comment on the quality of your videos and commend you two.....You make a great team / couple! Best wishes from San Diego, CA!
It's 3.45am, in bed & now I'm STARVING....that veggie meal looked delish! Reminds me of my old local Buddhist temple food in Hong Kong - miss it so much! Such an interesting video ❤️
It was a video that made me feel once again thank you. I realized that I was losing myself. Thank you very much. The tea candy in the room was'inabanoshirousagi', my favorite candy.
So glad that you enjoyed this video. Thank you.
Amazing video! Thank you guys.
Love love love the video! Please make more of these temple trip videos.
Oh how i would love this at the moment!
What an amazing experience!!! Yhank you so much to share it with us!!!
INCREDIBLE! Thank you for sharing this exp with us!
🙏🙏🙏just great thank you so much! Love you guys! 💕💕💕
What a nice experience. Thank you for sharing. Love all the vegetarian dishes and your meditation session.
I absolutely loved this video. The different food and the culture is just amazing. Thanks for another great video
Liked the video. Nice video quality and editing.
Well done video. That food looks great. It was interesting they served alcohol. I will have to try that type of meditation one day. Thanks for the video!
One of my favourite videos so far, this place is ideal.
This video is so peaceful, I enjoyed it so much! Thank you!!!
Exquisite video. The music just went with the tour of the dinner so perfectly.
Excellent wonderful video!!!!!!!!!! ❤️
My favourite video thus far on your channel
Thank you so much...💚
Everything is beautiful!
What a lovely place to stay! The view was a delight, and it was superb to see some nice vegetarian meals. I also love how they didn't let anything go to waste.
You guys looked so happy and relaxed after visiting this place. I'm a die hard meat eater but would gladly go vegetarian for a couple nights stay there. And I'd love to learn to meditate. I just need to work on silencing my thoughts. Glad you guys had a good time. 😊
Deep enjoyment and vicarious nourishment in having watched this morning's video. There's a thoughtfulness, detail, and sublime quality unique to the Japanese culture. This place was a distilled version of this kind of expression and experience. Wow. Yes, Shinichi and Shatoshi - if you can get back to this place intermittently, I think it would serve the both of you deeply. You both looked "cleansed" in the closing shot of the video. Much, much thanks for beauty. Until next-
Another memorable video, one of the best and most surprising you guys have released. I loved it. Thanks! You're the best.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed this one.
What a beautiful and peaceful place you have shown us. The food looked amazing 😉, my wife being vegetarian loved the food and so much effort put into theses dishes. The location was picturesque with all the snow ❄️. What a great place to visit. Look forward to more videos 😀👍
Oh my word! I NEED to go to this place right NOW! I remember attending a meditation session like that (yes I was hit very sharply on my back too) back in 2019 in Kyoto. I’m so very into Zen Buddhism and need to learn much more! Thank you both for this very important video. 🙏
Thia was a great episode.
Absolutely incredible video and atmosphere of the moment. The sound the camera work the attention to the experience is exquisite. If I wasn't disabled I would pick up and go for this moment. I love the Buddhist tradition and culture. I love you guys. Thank you for giving me a experience I otherwise will most likely never have.
Everything looks so delicious and well prepared. I bet they serve different stuff every time, can't wait to travel to Japan again
I stayed at Koya-san 6 years ago. It was one of my favourite experiences in Japan. I must go back there.
Thank you for this vlog. I’m missing my home country. I really appreciate it. You both take care. Domo arigatoo.
Glad you enjoyed it
This is such a beautiful and tranquil place to stay just perfect for the mind, body and soul . The vegetarians meal looks so delicious 😋 the presentation is amazing but your review says it all perfect. This temple is a perfect place to stay, relax and detox most of us could do with this kind of holiday . Thanks for the calming experience ☺️.
thank you.
Thank you so much for showcasing shojin ryori, this is definitely the kind of food we should all be eating more of! It’s local, vegetarian and healthy so it’s not only good for you, it’s also good for the planet! 🤩
Amazing place, this is definitely for me.
~ Someday I will make it to Japan…⛩
wow, watching you get slapped on the back during the meditation made me wonder if there is really something primal about calming a baby or young child by rubbing their back... I sometimes ask my husband to "drum" on my back when I get anxious or feel strange, and it makes me feel better instantly! this is fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing. And the food looks wonderful too as always.
"Center ourselves"👍
wow, so nice
I was reading Maiko-san chi no Makanai-san and there is a scene where Sumire is house-sitting for her senior, who has a kitten named Okoge; I just learned from this video that Okoge means the rice crust at the bottom of the pan, how cute!
So pretty and peaceful. 🙏
The one you called "kogomi" at 13:23 looks like it might be a fiddlehead? A young fern shoot, before it unrolls. Great video, thank you for showing the experience.
Wow so many different foods
Thank you so much for showing us this beautiful experience at the temple lodge! Would you be able to demonstrate how to cook simple, healthy temple food? Lots of us vegans here would appreciate it. 🙏
That is a vintage, very cozy room! Not interested in Vegetarian food myself, but those dishes look good!💕🍜
Nice food and good stay vacation
AMAZING CONTENT. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. YOU GUYS ARE BLESSED TO HAVE SUCH A DELICIOUS FOOD. LONG LIVE NIPPON. OISHII...
Marvelous
Japan provides the finest accommodation and food ! So looking forward to visiting beautiful Japan again soon
Excellent visual recording of Daisen Shōjin Ryōri/Japanese Buddhist based vegetarian cuisine at Sanrakusō. Perhaps researching and inquiring about the ingredients and techniques from the chefs as well as finding a more precise, appropriate vocabulary to describe the flavours, textures, aroma, etc. may be more helpful than such comments as interesting, delicious, Oishī. Great introduction to a very specific regional Japanese cuisine.
I just love these Japanese authentic ryokan and authentic local family-style home cooked food. I had been to a few Japanese Ryokan in the 70’s. Very nice 👍
Magical
Good vídeo! Hellow for Spain!
Really wish i can visit Tottori someday.
Interesting dishes and never stayed at a temple!!! 😮
Honestly that place looks like it needs some love. Lots of run down furniture, beat up dishes, etc. Rustic for sure, but a bit dilapidated.
Aloha🌺 Beautiful!
I've eaten at a temple before, it was a bit less fancy than yours, it was much less ryokan-like and much more traditional and communal. But the vegetarian meal was lovely and actually one of my favorites on my entire trip.
Oh my god! That's a proper hard slap he gave you there, with a wooden stick no less lol. Did that leave a mark? We don't have that in our meditation 😂
Growing up in Thailand us kids were always made to meditate, in our Buddhist class(yup that's a compulsory subject in every schools) and on school trips which often involved Buddhist monks for some reasons. To be honest it seemed like a total waste of time to me, I could never see the point or feel the effect of meditation. But, being an adult now I might appreciate some peace and quiet to my mind u_u
Awesome Inspiring Beautiful Achievement and Great Delicious food...GOD BLESS YOU ALL 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🍁🌺🌹🍇🌻💮♻️🌼🍀⚘️💐🏵🌸✨️
