Japan's most sacred place, the remote mountain town of Koyasan, the centre of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. It is here we got the opportunity to stay in a Buddhist monastery, in a traditional Japanese tatami room and try their vegetarian cuisine as well as feel their way of life. The monastery looked fantastic and Julia looked really surprised at your room when you got there, the forest looked brilliant and very peaceful and the crunch of the snow. The meal looked absolutely delicious, it must have been a great day

He stayed in and around Tokyo area not far from the *Tokyo Skytree* just minutes away with his friend. Also, he told me how clean the city was, sidewalks and street... His whole time there, he saw only one dirty place walking by an alley... He told me the food was great, he never had a bad meal during his stay, even food he tried for the first time was delicious... I hope you two have a great time as well in Japan like my son Dave and his friend did... btw: when my son got back home, I asked him what was the one thing that impressed him the most after living in Tokyo Japan for a month? He told me how people were respectful towards each other, especially with strangers/tourist, nothing like here in the states.... *Good Luck* 😉

Sekisho Inn in Koyasan! We stayed there when we visited my parents grave with my children last summer, and we sis the Okunoin tour as well. It's interesting to see the winter scenery. It's a bit of a trip from Osaka (as it's deep in the mountain), but I think the atmosphere is worth it. I hope you two had enjoyed it!

I visited Koyasan with a group of other young teachers back in 1984. It was a memorable few days with the highlight being a friendly softball game with the students from the Buddhist high school. I'm sure the memories you created on this journey will stay with you for years.

@@MattandJulia It felt pretty remote back then. I do not remember the downtown area looking so prosperous. We also had pretty basic, though comfortable accommodations with men sharing one large tatami room and the ladies in another.

I had never before heard of Koyasan and now I can't wait to learn more about it. I am a pescatarian these days (by choice/inclination) and the dinner you had was absolutely appetizing. I would so love to eat like that and it made me think of when Julia was purifying her spirit that this dinner was like a second form of purification, and a delicious one.

I’m an Eastern Orthodox Christian….Japan is the only country where Orthodox Christians are allowed to be cremated….in fact it’s the law in Japan, because there is not enough land now for burial. Elsewhere, Orthodox churches do not allow cremation. Obviously, I would not want to live in Japan….although, as usual, your video is terrific. ❤️😊

Hi Guys! Nice to see you enjoying Japan. I booked a 10 night stay in Tokyo early Jan 2020, for the following September. We all know what happened next. Looking to possibly try again this August. I have checked the FCO travel advice, which states that there are no official restrictions re mask wearing etc, but guidance. I notice quite a few people wearing masks in the open air, bit also in restaurants and bars. Is this generally expected etiquette, by the individual establishments? Also on the flight in I noticed quite a few masks, including yourselves. Is this an enforced rule (I am not criticising, just need to know as my wife does not like flying at the best of times, and spending 13 1/2 hrs on an aircraft wearing a mask would be a bit too much for her.)
Finally, I get the impression you are part of an organised tour. I take it Japan is still not allowing independant tourists?
