    ---
If you install a standard HP 952 or high yield HP 952XL ink cartridge into your #HP #OfficeJetPro 8710 #Printer & observe the "USE #SETUP #CARTRIDGES " #error message on the display, typically "SETUP" cartridges will be required to #reinitialize the printer and will not allow use of HP OEM regular or extra large tanks, 3rd party aftermarket or refilled HP original ink cartridges to function.
The error may also be displayed if the #PRINTHEAD assembly is removed & replaced (i.e. #programming requirement). If the original 'SETUP' #cartridges are not available, it is possible bypass the lockout message by performing the following steps.
NOTE 1: Procedures may vary depending on regional location and by printer model version / software revision.
    1. Navigate to the SUPPORT MENU by pressing the Return button 4 times in a row (Note: the Return button will not be illuminated but is located at the bottom left of menu).
    2. Under SUPPORT MENU, scroll down to the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION MENU.
    3. At SYSTEM CONFIGURATION MENU, select OK.
    4. At the TRADE OOBE MENU, select OK.
    5. At the TRADE SUPPLIES DISABLED MENU, select OK.
    6. HP #OEM regular, aftermarket or refilled ink cartridges may now be used in the printer.
NOTE 2: In some cases, the SUPPORT MENU may not initially appear, you may need to first remove the ink cartridges, restart printer, then press the RETURN key four times. If this still does not allow access, then reinstall your used or standard ink cartridges and try again.
    ---
    For #HP952 #HP952XL #printer systems and associated #ink #cartridge #errors such as: “ cartridge #problem ”, " #Incompatible ", “ #Missing or #damaged”, " #Failure " “Ink #Cartridges Problem”, #Depleted or “ #Remove and #Reinstall the indicated cartridge” the #printer may #fail to #detect the cartridge’s electronic #smart #chip which is affixed to the rear side of #cartridge or the ink cartridge’s #plastic restraining #tab is not properly #locking the cartridge into the printer’s #PRINTHEAD assembly.
You should also inspect cartridge’s smart chip for ink residue or scratches - thoroughly clean surface with a damp cloth or towel.
It is possible that a newer version of HP printer #firmware may have been installed onto your printer and the cartridge chip or chips are now #locked #out. A new chip will need to be installed.

NOTE 3: for observed print or image defects where one or more colors are missing, it is suggested to remove the PRINTHEAD (select printer models) and thoroughly clean nozzle and electrical contacts:
    1. Wash the bottom of printhead under hot water.
    2. Fill a bowl with 1/2 to 1 inch of cleaning solution and soak the printhead for few hours.
    3. If necessary, use a syringe and to flush the printhead ports with cleaning solution or warm water.
    4. To avoid future printing problems it is recommended to print on a regular basis such as twice a week; this will fire all print nozzles and avoid printhead clogging.

A few items to consider here: Are the Installed cartridges Non-HP OEM ink cartridges...i.e. current or previous generation aftermarket or refilled cartridges installed? Or possibly, HP OEM Original cartridges are installed but they are now several years old with OUT OF DATE (obsolete) smart chips installed (and are no longer compatible with the current printer software version). Updating the printer to the latest software version will usually allow both HP NEW and NEW AFTERMARKET cartridges to function ok since chip versions are usually updated each year. ....but may disable older cartridges with older generation chips, unfortunately.
Accessing the deep service level menu sometimes allows you to unlock select printer/cartridge error conditions, but not always. UH

      Sorry to hear that.
Let's try 2 procedures to see if the error will clear:
Where there is no OOBE option (i.e. on select printer models), to access the printer's SERVICE MENU perform the following steps:
      1. Press Home Button, then Back button twice, then Home button (nothing changes on screen). Please note this procedure varies slightly between models, so you may have to hunt for the exact sequence.
      2. Lift/Open the cartridge access door/lid and remove cartridges and close lid/access door.
      3. Printer should say "no cartridges found" or similar.
      4. Lift/Open the cartridge lid/door and reinstall the cartridges. Printer will run diagnostics and print a test page.
....or this Ink Initialization Reset procedure:
      Press return arrow 4 times
      Press support menu
Press right hand arrow 3 times to system configuration menu and press ok
Press right hand arrow 2 times to ink initialization status and press ok
      Press ok to clear
      Good luck! ;). UH

Is it possible to reset the chip on the cartridge somehow? Is the info saved on the cartridge chip or does the printer remember the chip ID as a spent cartridge? Any help or further clarification would be greatly appreciated. Asking this about my 8710 model. Thanks!

Unfortunately not possible to reset the chip, but you could buy chips via Alibaba.com and replace them. Though much cheaper just to buy a new one; I suggest you just replace the infringing cartridge with a new one. Good luck! UH
