By far the best and easiest fix for HP's criminal cartridge scam - even better after downgrading the firmware and turning automatic updates off. I'm looking forward to the class action lawsuits. Thank you!

Dude, you are a freaking god. I almost only ever print in black and white and when this thing forces you to replace a color cartridge just to print with black ink, F that. You just saved me a 90 minute round trip to Wal Mart, which is literally priceless

Followed your easy directions about a year ago and today received a message to connect my printer to HP for updates. DID NOT do that because then they would say to add color cartridges. So I followed your directions again so I could only print black, even though my color cartridges were very low. Thank you for what you have done to save me and many other money. Great job

Didn't work for my HP 8600 - when all was said and done, printer still displays that I'm out of colored ink and must replace before printing. Thanks for posting the video - clearly helped some, and was worth a shot for me / leave no stone unturned. Thx again -

thanks for this. I have a ton of black in left and I can now use it until it is empty and then buy replacement cartridges. Really HP should get sued for this because once you own a printer you should be able to print in black ink only if you really want to and not have to buy additional cartridges. The cartridges are 30 times more expensive than what the printer cost me originally. It's by no means environmentally friendly to have them have such a system because most people will throw out their printers and buy a new one when the ink runs out as it turns out to be way cheaper. Talk about wasteful technology.
i've had a yellow cartridge missing code on mine for over a year. i had gotten a new print head and that didn't help either . i refuse to throw this printer away. thank you for this video.. praying i can get my baby up and working soon
Thank you sooooo much this worked in a pinch - one caution that I might add - a commenter below does not use genuine HP cartridges and I did this on my previous HP 8710 printer and it created many issues so I now stick with genuine cartridges and have not had any issues since.

Thank you! It started printing only black after I replaced the cartridges with XL non-HP official ink. And it was driving me up the wall. This was super simple and did the trick!

My printer ran out 2 color cartridge and 1 black cartridge so I went to Office Depot and bought 1 black cartridge and installed but it did not work due to 2 color cartridges ran out of ink too. I called STUPID HP technical support and they told me that I have to go and buy additional color cartridges in order to make my printer to printer again. They said that there is no way to reset it. Lucky, that I found your video and performed the reset and it worked fine without buying additional cartridges that told me to buy. STUPID HP COMPANY. NEVER BUY THEIR PRODUCT PRINTER ANYMORE.
If I build a printer, I certainly will have a secret hidden menu. GREAT IDEA HP. I went through steps and mine still saying depleted. I have bought two rounds of ink thinking the cartridges are bad.
Thank you soooooo much. I have a 8720. I discontinued the HP instant ink program but I couldn’t print from my phone anymore. I kept getting message saying it was locked 🔒.
Just read in the paper that HP is being sued because they are not informing people about the requirement to have color cartridges even though they were just use the printer as a fax machine.
Just an FYI: The part where we uncheck sending info to HP, I unchecked as directed by Johnny on video, however, I noticed it is checking itself back on as I had the same issue and repeated the steps and that was checked. I do not believe I missed unchecking it. If you have issue repeat the steps, it worked for me.
I had the error too. I replaced with brand new regular ink for all colours and the ink system failure message reappears. Then I put in extra large ink cartridge for all colours and saw the ink system failure message again. Then I followed this video and the message still appear which frustrated me. On both purchases of ink, I made sure they were the genuine ones and they were costly too so what do I do now
Update::: Mine doesn’t work…. I never get the service menu. I assume you are talking about the home and back buttons when you say above and below? My screen does things when I hit the home button. Ok, got mine to work. My menus were very different. I hit the back button (bottom) 4 times. I had to do a partial full reset. The other option wasn’t available.
I have tried this, it does work for some time, after a number of prints it will not let me print, I rest it and use it again and again and again, now this crooked printer tells me " this printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. And ...... To make the long story short I can not rest my printer anymore.
Please how do I reverse this setting to the oringinal settings? I tried it and my printer screen has become non-responsive, permanently showing Catridges depleted.

Do you refill your catridges then reset? No need to buy a new one for ur 7740?
