1/22/25 It worked for my HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 the printer would state It was out of black ink bought a new cartridge replaced it still stating it was out of black ink opened up another black ink cartridge still stated the same until I followed your steps. You definitely save the day. Thank you so much sir

Followed your easy directions about a year ago and today received a message to connect my printer to HP for updates. DID NOT do that because then they would say to add color cartridges. So I followed your directions again so I could only print black, even though my color cartridges were very low. Thank you for what you have done to save me and many other money. Great job

Thank you sooooo much this worked in a pinch - one caution that I might add - a commenter below does not use genuine HP cartridges and I did this on my previous HP 8710 printer and it created many issues so I now stick with genuine cartridges and have not had any issues since.

Thought it was the cartridge- replaced it- STILL wasn't printing BLACK- cleaned it - cleaned again- aligned- nothing .. talk about frustrated.....then I came across this video- reset everything and re-figured setup--VOILA!!! thank god cause this thing almost became target practice. thanks for this. I have a ton of black in left and I can now use it until it is empty and then buy replacement cartridges. Really HP should get sued for this because once you own a printer you should be able to print in black ink only if you really want to and not have to buy additional cartridges. The cartridges are 30 times more expensive than what the printer cost me originally. It's by no means environmentally friendly to have them have such a system because most people will throw out their printers and buy a new one when the ink runs out as it turns out to be way cheaper. Talk about wasteful technology.
I had the error too. I replaced with brand new regular ink for all colours and the ink system failure message reappears. Then I put in extra large ink cartridge for all colours and saw the ink system failure message again. Then I followed this video and the message still appear which frustrated me. On both purchases of ink, I made sure they were the genuine ones and they were costly too so what do I do now
Please how do I reverse this setting to the oringinal settings? I tried it and my printer screen has become non-responsive, permanently showing Catridges depleted.

Unfortunately I tried this on my hp 3833 printer and now I cannot even get access to the touch screen as the message “Cartridge cannot be used until enrolled in HP Instant Ink” will not come off the screen. Before attempting this fix, i had access to the screen and stuff. Now nothing. I tried this reset fix again but nothing is getting that message off. So frustrating. Not even seeing that OOBE reset option anymore

Worked a few times perfectly, now seems they blocked me , i had to redo sequence every time i plugged out the machine, now no question mark symbol, immediately goes to must replace cartridge. Tried power off and plug out, no go
I replaced all cartrages with the refillable kind and installed the little chips that I bought separately and the printer dont recognize the chips, acts as if the cartrages are missing,after following your video,still no change

Good afternoon! So I was having this same issue and followed this all the way up until the end where you press later on the screen that says finish setup online. Well....this printer will not let me press later. I'm stuck and beyond frustrated. I tried turning off the printer and starting over and that's a no go, I also tried unplugging it and I'll be darned if the same dang "later" screen didn't pop right back up. PLEASE HELP!!!!
This solution seemed very promising; however, the reset didn't bypass the cartridges for my printer. I think I'll have to buy the 951XL yellow. I still don't know how that depleted, given that I've only printed in black. Never again will I get an HP printer.

My printer ran out 2 color cartridge and 1 black cartridge so I went to Office Depot and bought 1 black cartridge and installed but it did not work due to 2 color cartridges ran out of ink too. I called STUPID HP technical support and they told me that I have to go and buy additional color cartridges in order to make my printer to printer again. They said that there is no way to reset it. Lucky, that I found your video and performed the reset and it worked fine without buying additional cartridges that told me to buy. STUPID HP COMPANY. NEVER BUY THEIR PRODUCT PRINTER ANYMORE.

I have tried this, it does work for some time, after a number of prints it will not let me print, I rest it and use it again and again and again, now this crooked printer tells me " this printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. And ...... To make the long story short I can not rest my printer anymore.
Sadly didn't work for me. It's telling me to replace the magenta cartridge and preventing me from going through the rest of the setup, so now I'm stuck in setup until I buy new ink. I wonder if they've patched this in a newer firmware since this video is from 2018.
Hm. This works initially but once configured to the wifi the same issue happens. Looks like HP is onto us. Is there another setting which needs adjustment to prevent automatic firmware updates or whatever is causing the issue to repeat?

Tried this in my 8715 and it didn’t work at all. Now it won’t let me do anything at all. How do I go back to how it was?
one of mine is depleted all the way will this solve that issue. It tells me Depleted cartritges must be replaced to resume printing

I followed this till reports menu and then the only option was country and language reset, why ?
