I doubt it. Depleted cartridge error comes from the level switch just above the printhead. He is clear you might have to fill the reservoir there to solve this problem. Yes you dont need hp cartridges and yes you dont need 4 cartridges to refill. However depleted cartridge error is a pain to stop and if you can be sure your printhead never runs from ink it is easier to modify the printhead circuit board by short circuiting each set of 2 pads that are connected to the springs going to the reservoir switches. (youtube video for that fix)

Go to 123inks.com or LDInks.com to seek a replacement.

Remove the printhead and thoroughly clean the printhead electrical surfaces and then reinstall to see if the error clears.

Check cartridge connectivity & chip compatibility (new versions, either HP OEM original or Aftermarket new chips are usually required). Thx!

@@matt75hooper you have to get new color cartridges and new black or the printer won’t work. The new chip from the new cartridge tells the printer it’s a new cartridge

@@Allergic2broke Thanks for the speedy response. These are brand new ink cartridges I'm using & still getting crazy messages. Will not print. Will not print "BLACK ONLY". Something's gone haywire.

All cartridges must have a 'detectable' chip installed (for black and color); in addition the chips need to be at a current firmware level (either HP OEM new or Aftermarket new chips)...if not the the printer will reject and not allow printing, unfortunately.

For this printer model you may need to utilize the printer WEB application (this is an internet based application that you need to download from HP.com for the HP OJ Pro 8020 model. Good luck. :). UH

Internet feed or server error via UA-cam most likely...close and then open the browser will usually fix this issue. UH

Unfortunately not possible to reset the chip, but you could buy chips via Alibaba.com and replace them. Though much cheaper just to buy a new one; I suggest you just replace the infringing cartridge with a new one. Good luck! UH

Internal PRINTHEAD electrical issue or poor electrical contact issue in most cases, but sometimes a firmware refresh can resolve the issues. Visit HP.com and download the latest printer firmware for your HP model. Good luck! UH

Switch to plain paper? If you have matte or photo paper installed the printer will lay down quite a bit of ink. Also, within the printer driver you will have additional controls...for example, do not print in Greyscale as this consumes quite a bit of ink. Best to choose Black and White only, or similar. ;). UH

Any standard syringe kit from Walgreens/Target, etc. should work just fine...they often include small plastic tubes. UH

How many times did you have to do the cleaning procedure with the paper towel? I did the process at least 7 times and I still have the printerhead error message. Did you clean until there absolutelt NO INK left on the paper towel?

In this particular case for an IIT system (does your printer use 4 different ink cartridges?) the error could be caused by a lack of ink INSIDE the built-in PRINTHEAD assembly. While the cartridge(s) may have adequate ink, the PRINTHEAD may not due to air ingestion cause by poor/inadequate cartridge to printhead contact (small round port visible in printhead when cartridges are not installed). For IIT systems you may need to add half a teaspoon of water to the round port in the base of the INTERNAL PRINTHEAD, for the respective color having the problem, and allow it to thoroughly soak in for 12 hours. Then, reinstall the cartridges and perform several 'CLEANINGS' should then fully restore printhead ink levels and the error will disappear. Good luck! :0. UH

@@LaurralynMike The air pump system can also cause this problem. the plastic film that is just above the 4 reservoirs can lift off so the air just blows out there. Without the functioning air system the reservoirs will not refill.

A few items to consider here: Are the Installed cartridges Non-HP OEM ink cartridges...i.e. current or previous generation aftermarket or refilled cartridges installed? Or possibly, HP OEM Original cartridges are installed but they are now several years old with OUT OF DATE (obsolete) smart chips installed (and are no longer compatible with the current printer software version). Updating the printer to the latest software version will usually allow both HP NEW and NEW AFTERMARKET cartridges to function ok since chip versions are usually updated each year. ....but may disable older cartridges with older generation chips, unfortunately. Accessing the deep service level menu sometimes allows you to unlock select printer/cartridge error conditions, but not always. UH
