The "W-engine" build out of two VR-engines is actually a WR-engine. A true W-engine is a way older design with 3 zylindr banks (like a V-engine with an extra zylinder).
This would mean W-inline wich doesn't compute at all. The W is the German name given to this engine, just like the VR is a German abbreviation, the letters have different meanings.
2:00 The rotating thing will center on the last block selected. To do this, just make sure the last block you select is the one you want to pivot around.
I love these engine builds, Id love to see more videos of you testing their capabilities and fine tuning them. one thing you can do to reduce mass is to set ballast blocks to their minimum weight.
Hello Captain Red. I see you had problems the rotation system and how that works in besiege, let me explain: When you select two or more blocks to rotate, the center of mass will be always the last by default, if you want to make they rotate on their center of mass, go on the 3 red squares on the rotation option, unmark the second and now the center will be the medium point between them. Also, if you want to make engine works automatically, go to the automation section and the sensor and the timers, they will be very useful, you can use the sensor with a piston on its side to make a power on/off your system, and the timers you can use they to make them to make your engine work. My last ideia is use a spring attached to some unpowered rotation block to make a structure that can actually help you engine to work well. I hope those ideas and tips can help you to make others incredible creations.
Tried to make an engine myself. It came out pretty small, used two long pistons, and 4 sensors for timing. Turned out relatively fast and very smooth. Thanks for inspiration!
A vr is basically a v layout with an inline(ish) head to get a more compact layout. Also v layout engines tend to have 2 pistons sharing one position on the crankshaft. This is basically a twisted inline engine
Hey can I just say, I love your videos. Watching them is just so much fun. Your explanations of the physics make it understandable, and so I can appreciate the impressive visuals. You are a wizard to me. I can't say that I count the days until your next video, but I do always look forward to them. Great work.
The potential for mechanically-powered engines in besiege is massive, I encourage you to keep making videos about these. I've made several different types of them, from conventional pistons to planetary crankshafts. My strongest engine yet is small enough to fit on a car frame and is able to drive a car at a speed of 20. It also has enough torque to climb slopes of 25 degrees due to its unique design using steering hinges.
I think at 14:13 you showed how a hazard in a logic circuit occurs. We were taught to change the logic rather than put in timing blocks (capacitors) to avoid this. Really awesome stuff, I love the youtube recommendation algorithm.
My question is why not use a transmission that's constantly meshed. Also I can't imagine the weight of that car it's astonishing that it moves under its own weight.
I live watching Reid's videos and pretending I understand anything , makes me feel smart even though I don't understand what he's saying (I just look at the mechanism and understand that way cause I'm a dum dum)
That bracing looks really heavy. Working out a more efficient frame will probably help a lot with the lack of power in the transmission. I'm also tempted to open up besiege again myself and work out some reduced slip gear settups, as that was some of my main problems with them in my own creations.
When rotating, besiege chooses a pivot from the last block selected. Some blocks (like balast) have their pivot on the attachment point facing what it was put on, while majority should have them on their center of mass, so make sure you pay attention to that.
heres what i learned from trailmakers to help use what ever sensor (something that activates something when it sees something) on the part that moves (crank) it should move with the said crankshaft then have a line of blocks to make it activate it should be a automated engine then vice versa you can add gears in trail and add a piston system to make a clutch
Wow. Just discovered this channel and my mind is blown like Perez's Racing Point engine at the end of 2020 season. And I was so pleased with my battering ram with flamethrower at the end. Meanwhile this
Hey, Reid I just wanted to let you know in besiege if you hold Shift you can select more than one block to rotate without dragging a box like usual, and the last thing you select is the pivot point for where all the other pieces rotate. if you hold Shift and de-select then re-select the block you want to be the pivot, it resets where it rotates from and solves your issue with wonky rotations! sorry if this isn't phrased correctly.
For your next videos you should do a dual-clutch transmission, all-wheel drive, and perhaps even a limited-slip differential and all-wheel steering? Gotta make this car the best of all time.
2:10 the reason why it rotated weird becouse it matters what you choose as your origin of transformation, which is the last block you clicked on in your multiblock selection. For that reason use ctrl+click, or shift+click, whichever is correct 11:00 a little advice for that issue - moving all the parts a little away from the connection helps.
Just a friendly FYI... There's a reason why real crank-shafts have webs in between the rod-bearing sections. It's for rigidity. There's no way you could expect a chunk of steel to not deflect under loads like that, regardless of how strong it is. It needs continual support over the entire body of the shaft.
Not sure if you though of this but I redesigned the engine you made and even made a boxer engine in besiege. But somthing I found to work easier would be to instead of using the spokes and logic gates. I used 8 sensors to tell me exactly what position the engine was in and had each sensor activate an piston that needed to be extended. I can post a pic or upload it if my wording is confusing.
Ooooo I'd really like to see you try to get a better transmission on it, or even just hook it up directly and see it just go. Like even just turning the graphics all the way down to see it move at decent frames would be really cool
The fact Reid using logic gates and some simple binary to basically make his own crankshaft position sensor, the same way principally the real engine works. But didn't mention the term at all. I wonder, surely he knows about real CPS right? Brilliant either way. Especially if that idea came to you unto itself without knowing anything about a crankshaft position sensor.
3:45 "I'm allowed to have three different initial states; I can have both of the pistons contracted, one of the pistons contracted, or I can have both of them contracted." Ah yes, the three choices; A, B, and A.

Have you considered having pistons be wide on the other axis? I'm not sure if there's a part for this, but having them be, say, 3 blocks "thick" but only 1 "wide" (where for reference yours are 1 "thick" and 2 "wide"). If they could all connect to wide blocks at the ends that can hinge, you could fit more power into a more compact crankshaft.
