Wonderful advice on dealing with nerves. I heard of it as "Square Breathing" , each portion of the cycle being equal in duration. As opposed to "Triangular", no holding the exhalation. Very good to address something so common and potentially damaging.
I started about five years ago, and these are pretty comfortable but any song at any skill level will requiere a lot of practice. I would recommend finding a few intermediate songs, and perfect those the best you can working out anything your uncomfortable with.
@Kaleitarius It's not heavy, really, just has a lot of volume. You get used to it, as well. Learning how to hold a bass with one hand, a stand in another, a stool under your arm while trying to open a door just becomes second nature after a while. As well as opening doors with your feet and holding things in your teeth (Looking at you, bow!).
I love it, but I'd like to know: I've started learning to play the bass barely half a year ago. I can already play the Elephant and so on, but I think there's so much to learn and I'm already 18. (I couldn't start learning it earlier) How long do you think would it take for a 'normal' bass player (non-professional) to be able to play one of these pieces properly...? (...meaning me...:) ) Thanks alot from Germany.
Univac93 I started play double bass in age 25. In my repertoire is couple of double bass concertos, sonatas....... . I busy mainly as jazz player but I love to work on my soleo repertoire, orchestral expect....... . There is not time limit, that is love to the hard drive work, intellect , talent.... . what will make you bass player.
How's your playing now, 9 years later, are you still on it? I'm almost 56 and been playing electric/upright bass since I was 14...never stopped, BTW upright bass is MUCH HARDER!!
To learn how to play the bass properly in general will take at least a few years. I as well play double bass. You are going to have to learn bow movements, slurs, and all the fingerings. You must be very good at shifting and reading. You shouldn't have to think much about any of the notes during the fast runs. You could probably learn how to play it sooner than that but to learn how to do it at a professional and performance worthy level will take some time.
Master class should be about the instrument, right? All he's doing is reading us what we already have possible access to. We just want some hints and tricks for playing the double bass. Not that I actually play, or desire to play it. I just wanted to hear one sans piano accompaniment.
If you want to play the bass in the UK, okay. Today, most European countries want you to play the 5 string bass. And what now? This guy has a strong voice, a bass tone a bit less... and how is he doing on the 5string? Good for the London Phil, but what else? I have always thought that there are other big cities...
Excellent lesson thank you for your message...

As a bassist this helped me a lot
Thank you, I am in the process of learning and this is so helpful. A different view, definitely!
Esta fue de las clases más sinceras y modestas que he visto, no soy contrabajista, pero he aprendido bastante con este buen video, me ha fascinado !
Just came across this, very nice interview
I agree on the sound, really nice, deep fundamental
WOW!! Fast bow playing is fascinating and looks SUPER difficult!! I have an electric upright bass, but I need to go old school!

Gracias por los consejos. Genial el sonido del contrabajo y esteticamente también es muy bonito.
thank you sir. can you play slow staccato .
I can not play this technique
I like very much the sound. Believe it or not, the yaka taka thing is extremely useful
Ahh. Double Bass, the instrument with the sound of chocolate. Wish I could play it :)
Me and these excerpts have a long history of an abusive love/hate relationship. I'm still gearing up for a lifetime.

@HyperAndHappy Haha, my piano teacher is constantly doing that.
What type of Double Bass are you using for this recording?
Maker and age?
what type of bass and bow do u have
Thank you :")
@steeeeevve post a video playing more in tune (which would be hard seeing he is playing pretty in tune) and post a video
Thomas Martin 2005, pretty sure
Ta yaka taka. I like it :D
What a cute little bass
I was mesmerised more by his bald spot than his bass.
Intonation is a just a touch spotty in areas, otherwise outstanding. Really nice sounding orchestral bass.
Crochet ??? what is that ?
I had to scratch it to remember. But it is a quarter note in English ;
Corchea...
#1 if you are really serious, get a score. listen last. never listen before you read the score.

I'm dripping wet. Love it
This sounds like a contrbass saxaphone
8: OMG!
I agree. The guy has a strong voice, but not a sound.
Its just my own Polish opinion though.
FRENCH BOW FTW!
why is he not playing a Gibson?!?!?!

This is not good. Most players are much better in modern times
Your appraisal is a gargantuan error.
