I was at Bassworks this year and got to see Derek perform live. I was working on Otello earlier that day and he heard me, but didn't say that he would perform it. It was an honor to hear Derek and Tracy preform here.

holy cow this man has such incredible double bass orchestral chops! Crazy sound for all of these pieces. so emotive of the music Mr Derek! A lot of people say German bow is advantageous for orchestral playing but as a French bow player myself I've always thought of them as equal and this is certainly proof. Thanks for the music!

Jason great approach! This was a very helpful watch with your observations. Your comment about playing in the string took me back many decades to lessons with Herman Jobelmann - he would insist on engaging and "pulling" the string before actually drawing the bow in scale work to drive a full in the string sound.
Derek if you see these comments - you do an amazing job delivering the core of the sound! Bravo!

What about the triple fugue from the development section of the first movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony? The double bass parts there are just as complex as the rest of the orchestra. Oh, and of course the double fugues from the finale. Magnificent.

Me as a Violist,I also love very much the Kontrabass,the Kontrabass has more Reportoire than the Viola 🤷,the Viola has the less of all Strings,c'est comme ça🤷.

Scott Dixon from the Cleveland Orchestra is actually working on publishing all of these accompaniments as a book. It should be available for sale by the International Society of Bassists Convention in June 2023.
