    I just love Nigel in this. LSO trumpet and still makes it so clear that you should always enjoy playing and don't be put off by how fantastic Phil is (by all means have a go). I am absolutely crushed to hear he is no longer with us. I take solace from the fact that generations of trumpet players to come will heed his wise words. In that, he is immortal.

    @tealtoejam How many Trumpet players does it take to change a lightbulb? 1 to change it, 50 to sit and talk about how much better they would have done it...

    The man plays beautifully, his technique seems to serve the musical expression quite well, the LSO doesn't hire players who aren't the complete package, so to the nitpickers, your time is better spent learning how to play.
    There's also a beautiful, warm, cornet-like quality to his sound, which I may be imagining!

    Rest in Peace Maurice Murphy, very sad that he passed. His master class was amazing, though Phil and Nigel i'm sure will step up to the job!

    What a fantastic talent! What a sound! His father and brother were both players. He got his first cornet at age 3-1/2. Things you do well at an early age are very natural and stay with you. Extremely impressive trumpeter. They don't hire just anybody to play principal at the London Symphony btw.

    @TheRc0211 I think your talking about a mute. There are various types of mutes for brass instruments. They can change the timbre of the instrument or reduce the volume to make it sound softer.

    Good luck in the job Philip. RIP Maurice Murphy - never to be forgotten. To get this post in a world ranking orchestra at your age is pretty staggering. Reminiscent of James Watson and the RPO in the 1970s. Pleased it's gone to a brass bander!!!! Any chance of guesting at Whit Friday in Saddleworth some time? Well done.

    I have played and met many fine musicians that leave mouthpiece marks upon their lips. They had amazing range, endurance, tone, articulation... All that good attributes. Phillip could have just shaved too close that morning.
    As far as Maurice Murphy. John Williams mentions him by Name upon reflecting on the LSO's association with his Star Wars and film scores. We should be so lucky and talented to leave an impression like that on any conductor.

    Ha, it's funny because I doubt the 'haters' have actually seen Phil Cobb play, because he's one of the best trumpet players I've ever watched, and by far the best I've ever seen play in person. Also, there's only one person of his position in the world, and most of the haters just wish that they could have reached that standard, and that position in such a renowned orchestra, instead of falling at a hurdle early on.

  • @eysikal

    @TheRc0211 I think you are talking about a mute. It goes into the bell of the instrument and is used to change the character of the sound.

    @evansavage101 actually he joined 18 months ago at the age of 21 and he is now 22 years old not 23. i know this because he was the guest soloist at NYBBGB course last week. i am the principal Eb tuba player from there and i spent most of the time he was there talking to him. he is a true inspiration and a very funny bloke also.

    and furthermore has been performing at a very high professional level from a very young age. Guys like Phil are guys that were being featured at soloists with major orchestras in their teens. Do your self a favor critics, next time you have a thought, let it go, and think to yourself if you are even in 1/100000 of the position that this guy is in.

    Sometimes performers have a silver round object attached to the mouth of the trumpet, can someone tell me what is it called and why is it used?

    • @Mooseman327
      @Mooseman327 5 років тому

      That is called a "mute." There are four main types of trumpet mutes; a straight mute, a cup mute, a plunger mute and a Harmon (or wah-wah) mute. The Harmon mute is, typically, made of aluminum and is, most probably, what you're referring to. Mutes are used to alter the sound of the instrument and that is indicated by the composer/arranger in the actual score. A jazz musician will use a mute at his own discretion.

    im embarrassed to read some of these comments as a trumpet player because of the snotty, arrogant trumpeters who think they know everything and HAVE to say in some way that they're better than someone. grow up guys, no one cares if you could play a high c in 7th grade.

  • @cky1616
    @cky1616 14 років тому

    I'm sure they have their reasons for playing the way they did. It could've been a mistake, or it could have been intentional. But until Cobb and/or Gomm answer Admiralkirk's questions, we won't know for sure. I'm also wondering why they changed markings too.

    Oh my God. He lowers his left eye brow at 1.14, he's so unprofessional! And then at 1.37, he moved his upper left lip up a micron, that's not right! He should follow my example. I am pretty good for my age after all. I was first chair in my local youth band!
    ( I swear. This is similar to some of the shit you read on these videos. Where some no-body attempts to give playing suggestions to people who are just.. Better than them)

    compare sound, and consider how much they hold back. go solo battle with one, and you probably wouldnt even bother playing back. 2, you obviously needed to see the video. and 3rd who makes mistakes on a song they've played before? especially at a rehearsal. I can't hold a candle to these professional and i've never missed a note during performance even when i'm on about 5 instruments.

    What can I say except that these are the most stereotypical responses for a trumpet video on youtube that I have EVER seen. Usually its some 17 year old punk who plays first chair in HS youth symphony who's going to tell the Principal player one of the best orchestras in the world that he is playing High Notes wrong. To get to a position like this takes more work than doing HS Youth Symphony, or going into a Music Program at State College for Trumpet. This guy worked HARD from a very young age.
