I know “you can certainly try” is one of the most terrifying phrases Mercer says, but personally I think the scariest thing he says is a chipper “Actually, you know what?...”

@@BigggusDikkkus this is terrible advice. i've been in a campaign where the party never felt safe and just went from one deadly fight to another. it was emotionally draining and in the end it made it impossible to create dramatic tension, as there wasn't any encounter we didn't survive by the skin of our teeth. players and characters should have time to breathe, it's no fun to be stressed out for whole sessions!
Everytime they said it gets better I was hoping for an effect that counters the stealth disadvantage. I'm kind of glad they didn't pick up the armour that did that since she'd be giving it up now.
Event though this is two to four years late, I think you are absolutely right. If you watch Mercer's face as they are reading it, you can tell that giving that armor was a very solemn act born out of his desire to not have to kill her character. Mercer is one of those dm's that makes sure encounters are not a piece of cake but he still cares about them.
Taking a moment to pause and acknowledge how perfectly Travis plays Grog's character. He is immediately in the spirit of it and jumps into his role as the party barbarian who, when played well, helps temper the party's fear by making a sport of the fight. Finding the joy in the rage and hyping everyone else up so they panic less. It's such a valuable RP tactic. Rage on, Strongjaw
Fearless fights in general can sway a fight by bringing attention to them. However Grog Strongjaw is the attention that will Devastate what ever he can reach. I would like to RAGE.
He's also an incredible and important help for social encounters. By being on a patience timer, if the groups indecision or circular discussion bog progression Grog can march on headstrong and break a stalemate

The uncomfortable and laughing just when Vax kissed Keyleth and I knew immediately she still looked like Vex, I’m waiting for the realization. Reminds me when Keyleth tried to kiss tiny Vax.
The scene he described was so awesome-- swooping down with wings, throwing daggers, blessing Keyleth with a kiss-- he's out there living out dreams of being a super hero, and I'm 100% here for it.
its hillarious how liam said 97 after taliesin and marisha were excited about percy's high role. and in fact percy dealt 97 points of damage in that round
The hillarious thing in retrospect is that Pit-Fiends have Truesight, so all of the antics of this episode and the last happened while Ghurrix was fully aware of their true forms.
@@micryt. Most likely he either forgot about it, or he went with the rule of cool and ignored it so he wouldn't ruin what I think most can agree was one of the funniest encounters in the show.
@@petsan97 or the fiend simply went along with it because of the fact more magic seems to happen there regularly so posing as something other than what you are isn't that weird. That's what I'd like to think as a reason
Senokir is now officially one of my favorite characters. I thought he was an oddball just because people on the Fire Plane behaved differently but _nope_ even his business partner is mildly weirded out by him! He's hilarious and incredibly endearing at the same time.
...and then you realise Cenokir is so weird because he is utterly wracked by grief for his wife, to the extent that is is constantly aware of her absence and the precise amount of time that has has been parted from her. .... .... ....and Grog was essentially the only person to not assume he wasn't just a creepy arsehole.
Given how Matt makes Cenokir basically unreadable unless they score an impossibly high perception check it's fair to assume he's got dodgy motives going on. Matt quite often plays with characters who betray the party so they see threats everywhere now. It's a drawback to using that trope so often.
@@Madhattersinjeans yeah, in campaign 2 they've all but given up on insight checks because its more effective to try to read Matt's or each other's portrayal of the characters than what they get from rolling insight because Matt makes pretty much everyone unreadable.
@aljxNdr knox probably not ptsd, which is usually more anxiety related. Seemed more like an either autism or schziphrenia thing where they have difficulty expressing emotions.
I kind of understand why Sam does it. He's Full caster with a lot of spells, and at least in this fight, they're fighting a pit fiend with huge bonuses on all his saves and magic resistance. What I can't stand is when Taliesin does it. Like what do you mean you don't know what to do? Shoot it! Your a fighter. You already tried to disarm it and knock it prone, and they didn't work, so just hammer it with as much damage as possible. No party is going to be worse off having a ranged fighter using his three attacks to and stressing wracking up like 40-80 damage per turn. Percy's damage with sharpshooter (especially if burns an action surge) and Grog's with GWM and reckless attack (even more if used frenzied rage to give him a third attack), legitimately could've taken half of the pit fiends health in one round so long as Percy didn't misfire.
@@essexfuzz Once he switched to Animus, I wouldve given Retort to Gilmore to see if he could enchant the gun at all. But even if his damage is halved, his guns do a lot of damage. And lets be frank, the clutch player in the fight with Vorugal was Vex, because she knew it wasnt a time to try crazy tricks, and she spent every turn hammering the dragon with Fenthris. Percy needs to trust his (and his rival's) creations more!
I know he's explained why it awakened in other places (Scanlan remembering his promise to Kaylee), but he started dropping hints before Scan did that. I think it was partially him metagaming as a DM in the party's favor-they were fleeing from a monster that had under 30 HP left and he hated to see them give up when they needed just one more round of attacks to finish him.
No, true love is smart enough to get her safely inside, or if you can't - kill the thing that would harm her. Making it take a step before it kills her is useless. Just sayin'
@@dorianr4770 theres a difference in a senseless death and a sacrifice to safe hundreds, if not the whole galaxy. Also the problem was that it destroyed the best scene of the entire movie and a beautiful end for finns character arc, and it even got out of its way to actually negate logic and consistency by making her suddenly teleport in front of him, whilst he clearly drove full speed away from her with a big advantage. Also her act of "saving" him from a sacrifice that could have saved the rebels, got him and her out of their vehicles so that theyre on foot a couple hundred meters away from an entire army out to kill them. So essentially instead of finn dying and saving everyone, now she, finn and everyone else die (at least if the movie stayed true to continuity and logic, which it didnt). Awww... I love how it turns out Senokir wasn't that bad after all and just wanted something sentimental taken care of. I also love the look of validation on Travis's face as everyone realizes the favor isn't that big of a deal and that he was probably the only one that didn't assume that Senokir was like a serial killer or something. xD
Yeah, I was kind of baffled that the group was completely prepared to create more potential enemies by just ditching him before paying him back. Can we talk about how Scanlan very well might have caused a war between the fire plane and the hells by convincing them that the ambassador was preparing to make an attempt on the sultan’s life
Right, if only Scanlan didn't deflect every personal question with humor then turn around and blame other people when they don't know any personal details about him.
I imagine he has bad anxiety issues, his body language is exaggerated versions of what I’ve suffered in the past and had a super anxious friend years ago whose hands shook without any real associated condition (at the time, anyway, afaik)
All their 2016 playlists fit so well but vax’s is especially cute showing how in love he really is, plus keyleths with the song sacrilege from the yeah yeah yeah’s which talks about her boyfriend falling from the sky and leaving feathers in their bed. So perfect lmao
He did just give him the Boots of Feral Leaping, at this point it's mostly Grog having to get over the loss of a couple attacks to try and pull stuff down with the Chain of Returning. Percy does his best to ground enemies (but given how high of a level the enemies tend to be they often pass the saving throw), and Keyleth doesn't necessarily bring Earthbind to every fight. Scanlan hasn't been Fastball Special-ing Grog recently, too
I really, REALLY hope Cenokir just wants to lay his wife's ashes to rest... I really don't want Matt to rip the rug out from under us with this character, he seems really neat and cool and would be a fun ally. Plz don't do another Clarota Matt. Plz just let him be a sad widower who misses his wife.
everyone dumps on Clarota, but the dude was pretty honest with them from the start, and warned them several times to get out of there before he rejoined his people. He told them that being part of the collective hampers your ability to be an individual, and that his helmet was hiding and protecting him from that affect... and that he wanted to rejoin his people. Him "Turning" on them was seen 20 miles away, since he straight up told them the consequences of them staying after a certain point several times, and that it wouldnt exactly be because he wants to turn on them.
@@bloodydove5718 old comment i know, but that is something that has always bothered me, he basically told them that would happen, and did not have a choice, when he joined the collective he had to betray them. he lost his free will.
@@spaceblockb5284 Yea, especially since their comments later whenever he is brought up they don't seem to get that. Clarota didn't attack them, the hive mind collective took over and decided to make him attack.
Matt cracking the hell up watching Travis' Michael Jackson impression while everybody else had a serious conversation is the high point of the episode.
Matt: "I'm not going to double that, cuz it's the attack that was critical. Not the poison. So that's a gift". Liam: "Um, actually it's pronounced *Jift*". Me as a Norwegian: Yes... yes it is! The Norwegian word "Gift" (pronounced jift/yift) means "Poison". (it also means "Married"...)
I honestly believe that this archive of the great game of D&D and the joyous rapture of friends just having a good time has kept me from killing myself during COVID-19. These moments captured in time give me hope in humanity in a time of very little hope. I suppose this is a thank you from me to the cast and crew. I wish them long and happy lives, on their own merit, but also so that the rest of us can reap such a precious and rare resource that is hope. Thank you all sincerely
So glad that you took hope and happiness from this and are hopefully on a healing path. Sending my love to you, which might not mean much coming from a stranger but I sincerely hope you’re doing okay x
So glad you are still with us. Sometimes its the small things that keep us going, and if its just wanting to finish a ridiculously long campaign of some nerdy ass voice actors rolling dice. Stay strong friend. You got this
Hey man, this might sound weird coming from a total stranger, but I sincerely hope youre holding on, there are dark times, I know, but holding on always pays off, the sun always rises again. You can get through this.
Almost everyone has a child now VAX has keeynan skanlan has his daughter Percy and vex have the assmir and pike has grog the only one without is keylith as she killed hers
I know “you can certainly try” is one of the most terrifying phrases Mercer says, but personally I think the scariest thing he says is a chipper “Actually, you know what?...”
Oh god yes I felt that in my soul as I read it and could hear it perfectly in his voice
Especially cause it almost always comes before some crazy legendary action or some shit
It is the Dungeon Master's way of saying: "You made your bed, now lay in it".
I usually freak my player out enough with an eyebrow raise and saying quietly "did I write this?" when looking at my notes.
Apparently, I’ve unknowingly conditioned my players to fear a specific cheerful-sounding chuckle that I do. Didn’t even know I was doing it.
"Come on, in and out, 20 minute adventure." -Vox Machina about the Plane of Fire
Stones Poi boy did those words bite them in the ass when they returned, eh?
Scanlan: “Guys, why did we come to the fire plane?”
"What could go wrong?" Lmaoooo.
Yeah...I would have argued for using the time to fortify Daxio. They could have set all kinds if magical traps, like Symbol and other cool stuff
Instead they come back after 2 days, barely standing and now their fort is on fire. :D
Taliesin giving Sam the dirty limerick book is basically Percy giving Grog Craven Edge.

He cant help himself... its in his nature...

@@SchwartzerAdler nah, there isn't much chaos in his character, it just happens that sometimes his actions result in chaos, but his personality is pretty much in the middle, True Neutral even, I would say at this point, but I'm now checking he is Neutral Good according to Wiki, so some of his actions onward may have shifted him towards good.

As he is actively doing everything in his power to try and make pike die
@@TheElectrikCow it seems as though he's working pretty hard in making everybody die... a good Dm never let's his/her heroes feel safe

The moment when Scanlan leaves Pike because of his promise to his daughter is a clear character redefining point. I hope he got a character realignment for that.
You're right, you're absolutely right
For sure
Personally, I don't think alignment itself should be used. It contributes nothing to D&D. Just have people act like they do and OTHERS determine if they see him as evil or good.
@@shadowscall7758 I'm not too familiar with the rules, but I believe Rakshasa tiger demon takes less damage if their damaged by a character with Evil alignment. I'm sure there are other creatures and effects as well that make use of this even in 5e
@@auxilirem9416 Yes, there are, but that is only there because they have the alignment system. If they didn't have the system that stuff wouldn't exist and it really doesn't add anything, because people trying to debate, "Well, I am not really evil, so I should do full damage." Again, alignment arbitrary rules like that should just be removed from the game in my opinion.

Scanlan is the best!
Turns out, this song was rather prophetic...
Damn. Now I really want iTunes ringtones of this.
What song is this based one?
Grog: it's over pit fiend, I have the high ground! *Falls into lava*
Pit Fied: well, now you have the lava ground!
Pit fiend: You were the chosen one!
Grog: *I HATE YOU*
Goddamnit, my subreddits are pouring into each other again...
you were supposed to bring balance to tal'dorei, not destroy it!
Fun fact: high ground only helps with ranged attacks, in melee, it's a disadvantage and Anakin should've been able to easily sweep Obi-Wan's legs out from under him instead.
Scanlan is to bards what Aragorn is to rangers.
An annoyance?
Definitely, he's amazing!
Well with Mythcarver, he is basically King of the Bards. Mythcarver is basically the Bard equivalent of Anduril.
Scanlan has a bad movie adaptation?
Aragon is more of a fighter lol
I don't think they realized the Pit Fiend is a dragon-level threat at a CR of 20. The Ancient White Dragon is CR 21.
Absolutely this.
WHAT?! I am so glad I didnt suggest it to my dm 😬
Holy shit......Unholy shit actually
Not quite. For some reason pit fiends and balors don't have legendary resistances or actions like dragons.
They should have just fought the fire giants 😂
There once was a pit fiend from hell
In battle he did very well
'til a bard drew a blade
And the pit fiend was slayed
Then they looted the corpse where it fell
There once was a talented bard
with sharp a tongue and kind a heart
He drew a song-woven sword
to give a pit fiend retort
and tore the foul demon creature apart
Have you heard the tale of the Bard?
Who sang songs of the cube that was hard?
Loved himself more than others,
Yet his sisters and brothers
Held him in only the highest regard.

its hillarious how liam said 97 after taliesin and marisha were excited about percy's high role. and in fact percy dealt 97 points of damage in that round
The hillarious thing in retrospect is that Pit-Fiends have Truesight, so all of the antics of this episode and the last happened while Ghurrix was fully aware of their true forms.

....
....
....and Grog was essentially the only person to not assume he wasn't just a creepy arsehole.
down to the minute...
Because Travis is a good player who appreciates the work that Matt puts into his NPC's.
I love how Sam always says some variation of, "what can I do? I can't do anything," and yet always makes massive clutch maneuvers to save everyone.
@@danieldaw1778 the problem with Percy is none of his damage comes from a magical weapon. This hamstrings him a lot with higher level fights.
Matt’s super subtle hint to Sam of “Use your damn Vestige fool” lol
I know he's explained why it awakened in other places (Scanlan remembering his promise to Kaylee), but he started dropping hints before Scan did that. I think it was partially him metagaming as a DM in the party's favor-they were fleeing from a monster that had under 30 HP left and he hated to see them give up when they needed just one more round of attacks to finish him.

True love is burning an action surge to move her out of the way of an impending attack thatll probably kill her.
No, true love is smart enough to get her safely inside, or if you can't - kill the thing that would harm her. Making it take a step before it kills her is useless.
Just sayin'
didn't Rose do that in Last Jedi and a lot of fans hated it? it's a common trope (which I'm fine with)
@@dorianr4770 theres a difference in a senseless death and a sacrifice to safe hundreds, if not the whole galaxy.
So theres quite a big difference here.

Yeah, I was kind of baffled that the group was completely prepared to create more potential enemies by just ditching him before paying him back.
At worst, they went back and heard him out, only to find out his request was unreasonable. At which point they refused and fought him, or they just portaled out.

I enjoy how Liam always made fun of his own low base HP in the game, then went and played the squishiest class possible. The man enjoys punishment.
You mean like when he wasted Uncanny Dodge on an attack that dealt 13 damage and then wasted Luck to still get crit for 44 on the next attack? Lol
@@nathanbally He definitely wasted the uncanny dodge, which isn't surprising since, up to this point, he always says he's going to uncanny dodge the moment Matt says an attack hits him rather than waiting to see what the damage is, but saying he wasted the luck is just untrue. Mathematically, Matt had a 1/400 chance of rolling two natural 20's the way he did and Liam had no way of knowing that it would happen, so it was literally the best use of luck he had and just a worst case scenario with the way the dice worked.
@@Demonrifts to note after he used luck it's only 1/20 for another crit since he'd only have used the luck on a crit.
But it's exactly right it's not wasted he had no clue.as for uncanny dodge while he does waste it on weaker attacks it does make more sense that the rogue would just dude before he's hit and not know how strong the hit was going to be though that's not how the mechanic works.

To be fair using a sword is EXTREMELY out of character for Scanlan. He doesn't like to draw blood in battle, and is very caster oriented. everyone dumps on Clarota, but the dude was pretty honest with them from the start, and warned them several times to get out of there before he rejoined his people.
Matt cracking the hell up watching Travis' Michael Jackson impression while everybody else had a serious conversation is the high point of the episode.
seriously not going to even time stamp that? I wanna seeeee

Heh heh poison & married I like that thank ya for the knowledge my friend ✌️
As a German, I find this hilarious
(For anyone not too familiar with German, Gift translates to Poison)
What a crazy coincidence
I honestly believe that this archive of the great game of D&D and the joyous rapture of friends just having a good time has kept me from killing myself during COVID-19. These moments captured in time give me hope in humanity in a time of very little hope. I suppose this is a thank you from me to the cast and crew. I wish them long and happy lives, on their own merit, but also so that the rest of us can reap such a precious and rare resource that is hope. Thank you all sincerely
How are you doing nowadays?
@@julienbrightside8635 surviving lol

+blackvial "the only one without is keylith as she killed hers"

Grog and Pike are basically siblings, so Grog, Pike, and Keyleth are still missing children. :P
This is the most savage thing since Attilla the Hun.
I started to tear up when he counted off the years, months, and days.
