I love how Caleb is literally a light breeze away from death for the first half of this episode yet no one suggests that he gets medical attention for two hours
Gotta love being the quiet friend. You get forgotten about sometimes. But more likely they just forgot he was at 1 hit point from the previous session.
@@AnxietyRat That's very likely they forgot. Even the time of the day changed - whole last battle was in a middle of the night and it was suddenly just 10pm when they rested here XD

I do not understand these types of comments. As a DM, the biggest challenge I find is having enough story prepared to keep the players entertained for a full session, without them chewing through all the plot in under an hour (my group is very goal oriented). As such, if a player wants to eat up fifteen minutes of play time on something simple, or on having a conversation among themselves, that's a huge help. You can sit back and coast for a bit and let THEM tell YOU the story, which is delightful. I cannot imagine what kind of DM would be upset by their players giving them a break and picking up the narrative slack.
@@elbruces I think 1: It's because the thing he chose to do, out of all the things possibly available to a creative player like him, he chose to bathe because his party members made up the fact that he was smelly. So instead of preparing potions, writing scrolls, shopping for spell ingredients(which he needed at one point), he chose to RP taking a bath. It's funny. So people comment on it. 2. You're taking jokey observations about RPing a bath too seriously.
Not always. I see a LOT of comments seriously suggesting that Matt should be annoyed when the characters want to take time to RP themselves without following his story. That's the context I'm coming from.
You can immediately tell how much this strange, new group means to Caleb by how incredibly blessed he comes off for having a moment of peace with his best friend where he’s now in a position to read in silence, and in peace for even a little while. Just two days ago in character he was starving. Wanted. Scared. Not just for his own safety but for Nott’s. And now he has friends waiting for him, his best friend is safe by his side, and they can exist in peace. It’s incredible storytelling.
My favorite thing about this is that those braids were actually over 2 years ago. Most of us are caught up on the campaign and in the know by now. Those of us rewatching the first episodes and catching up to the actual campaign through Christmas break are coming to know these small details. Even after all this time this show has managed to capture our hearts and our imaginations. Watching these episodes for the first time and in many cases for many other people re-watching these episodes, it is exhilarating to see. I wish my players would make these types of character changes. This one dude in my group always thinks he made a different pc but they all act the same. Run face first into everything and treat everyone like shit. It should be no suprise that he's died multiple times.
Honestly, just the thought of roleplaying a D&D game with a player like Liam is so enticing. The roleplaying part is the most fun of a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, and you can tell he's very invested in that and I think he, and Sam actually, roleplay their characters the best. He gets so deep in his role. And his voice acting is absolute mint. Just a big fan!
I am legitimately in love with Liam. The depth of emotion he's able to put into his characters, especially Caleb, is one of the reasons I love this show.
First campaign healers: war cleric, druid, bard (or, briefly, an artificer with potions), ranger, eventually a multiclass paladin. Second campaign healers: trickster cleric. With a character who literally hurts himself to use his special abilities. This team is in for some pain.
Nothing healing potions can't handle. (Or the healer feat) My current party is: Gish Sorcerer, Gish Warlock, Rogue, Wizard and a Bard, who pretty much blows all his spell slots for offensive spells. So half the party is always in CQC getting blasted with Friendly Fire. And strangely they all survive.
@@ayumikuro3768 Matt limits how many healing potions the party can buy, and they burned through potions even in the first campaign, so this party probably needs to be more careful.
@@DurandalsFate Yeah I realized that in a later episode. Matt only sells a few potions at 50 ~ 70 gp. Which I personally find a bit to over the top. So they really should get the healer feat going. It's a one per long rest heal, but at least it's cheaper. Also they have song of rest for some reason which is an additional d6 per short rest, which is also rather good in the early game. I usually run much cheaper, mass produced potions (which are worse ones [I really like my d100 random potion effects], often created by a crazy old lady or they have a quest attached to reduce the price. Imho 25 gp is plenty for potions of healing. Common items should be common. That being said I tend to run much leaner economies [compared to the 2-3 DMs I played under], where one week of questing returns a potion for everyone and some basic supplies. Which they easily burn on their next quest. So I guess it's actually not that different. 🤔
Ayumi Kuro yeah, I have only limited my players ability to buy healing potions once so far, because it made sense from a story perspective (the fighting pits were running the annual championship), but I don’t think it makes any kind of sense how much money Matt charges for the basic healing potions. Like you said: common items should be common.
How much you restrict magic item availability is directly proportional to how "special" it feels in the world. Otherwise you might as well jist replace the city's tap water with healing potion.
So you’ve got Nott using her body as a shield when Caleb’s down for the count last episode and now we got Caleb doing the same against a whole Lawmaster. I’m just very 🥺🥺🥺 about them both.
i love how last time travis was grog, with an intelligence of 6 and the charisma to match, and this time he's fjord, the *only* one capable of being even vaguely charismatic
Also the one who got the price of the potions down to standard, even got a freeby. 1) Intelligent enough to even know 2) Being smart and charismatic enough to haggle him down Cut back to paying 1000 gold more while trying to haggle in C1 AND thinking he made a good deal xD
Also, Sam does the same in reverse, Nott has the lowest charisma in the group and constantly fails persuasions. Honestly the whole M9 is a negative mirror image of VM. Fellow newbie (both to CR and as a DnD player). He really is great. The only thing that sucks is there are so many people acting like if their DMs aren't on his level that makes them inherently bad. 😔
Outside of his character voices and emotions, which as a professional voice actor you have to assume will be exceptional, there’s very little that Matt does that your average DM can’t replicate GIVEN THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES. The right circumstances being that outside of his aforementioned voice acting career, this is his full time gig, as well as being assisted by a team and having a big budget. But in terms of pure description, narrative, world building, etc. there’s very little you can’t replicate with a creative writing class and some practice. Which again, Matt is very, very talented, but he’s also not this unassailable god that no mortal can dare approach (I’d probably give Brennan Lee Mulligan that award - his brain just works leagues faster than any other person I’ve seen).

Hahahaha as a dm, i always have to be careful what i ask the players to roll- like, there's a balance between having fun with game mechanics and adding a sense of risk versus accidently having the party natural one themselves into hours of unintended jailtime fun or bureaucratic nonsense 🤣
Just because they roll low doesn’t mean the characters won’t believe them. Poor presentation =/= non belief. They are trying to persuade someone who was trying already to believe them, if she weren’t, she would simply execute them like she threatened dozens of times. They just did a really poor job of saying the things they had said- like a person laughing during a serious moment out of nerves.

Hahaha thats true XD
My favorite thing about this is that those braids were actually over 2 years ago. Most of us are caught up on the campaign and in the know by now. Those of us rewatching the first episodes and catching up to the actual campaign through Christmas break are coming to know these small details. Even after all this time this show has managed to capture our hearts and our imaginations. Watching these episodes for the first time and in many cases for many other people re-watching these episodes, it is exhilarating to see. Oh how the continuity of this content doth spring forth, much joy for d&d fans.

"Why's this crowbar seven gold?"
It is unreal how every persuasion, intimidation, and deception check is a failure (when it matters) for an ENTIRE TEAM.
The team has no rizz. They completely suck at actually throwing their personality around. 🤣
At least partly because they're more interested in being amusing than sensible, and they have a lot of faith in their plot armor.
"Here."
*Pulls off one of the many rings they looted off of the toad's corpse*
"This is an old family heirloom."
XD, Jester is just amazing.
"Thanks, it looks a lot like one I lost a few days ago" either the toad stole it or it wasn't one of those rings and jester stole it. Either or.
It occurs to me that Nott can deny pretty much anything and fool a detect lies/ zone of truth. 'I'm Nott, a theif! I'm Nott .I'm Nott!!!'

I wish my players would make these types of character changes. This one dude in my group always thinks he made a different pc but they all act the same. Run face first into everything and treat everyone like shit. It should be no suprise that he's died multiple times.
Caleb realizing something has finally gone right in his life, while on the other side a goblin devours cucumbers off the floor. Wonderful.
A truly historic momment
Each having fun in their own way!
Just a big fan!
these guys are actual, real actors.
So it's not a surprise they can play roles better than us, average dudes
I mean Laura playing jester does exist. I absolutely adore that character
I am legitimately in love with Liam. The depth of emotion he's able to put into his characters, especially Caleb, is one of the reasons I love this show.
Caleb, standing in front of the police covered in blood: I killed a man lmao

The way everyone lost their shit when Matt pulled out the real physical map was priceless. :D
(Or the healer feat)
My current party is:
Gish Sorcerer, Gish Warlock, Rogue, Wizard and a Bard, who pretty much blows all his spell slots for offensive spells.

How terrified he is of being locked up, this is like facing his worst fear if he failed
i love how last time travis was grog, with an intelligence of 6 and the charisma to match, and this time he's fjord, the *only* one capable of being even vaguely charismatic
Also the one who got the price of the potions down to standard, even got a freeby. 1) Intelligent enough to even know 2) Being smart and charismatic enough to haggle him down
Cut back to paying 1000 gold more while trying to haggle in C1 AND thinking he made a good deal xD
Also, Sam does the same in reverse, Nott has the lowest charisma in the group and constantly fails persuasions. Honestly the whole M9 is a negative mirror image of VM.

@@bloodybutterflygaming1242 Trying to be a DM to a bunch of kids that have binged all of Campaign 1 is difficult at best.

Would have been fun if he sends all of them to the quarry for a session. XD
I don’t think the dc’s were very high. She probably has a high insight score and everybody but Nott rolled above a ten.
It was actualy kinda cool and said a lot about the character that she could see past that and remain objective.
I think that's the reason why there was no reward for their service to the town.

Also it for once is a believable German accent. Usually, Americans‘ idea of a German accent has me cringing so hard
as a fellow born german i have to totally agree, it is a nice touch.
It's hard to find an opportunity to speak in other languages when you're a voice actor if you are not super fluent. If you're not very confident, you tend to leave it alone. I like that Liam was brave enough to utilize this experience in the performance. Very impressed.
He also uses metric system
Mollymauk saying “there’s nothing wrong with living your life. You only get one of em. Well, mostly….” is excellent foreshadowing.
It's my first time watching this series, but honestly this isn't that much of a spoiler at all. 😆
Death and resurrection is just how Critical Role operates.
Yeah...
@@matthewherndon6488 I did not say “excellent spoiler,” I said foreshadowing. Totally different! And totally unintentional on Taliesin’s part, as we later learn in the campaign 2 wrap-up, which only proves he is an ancient eldritch being of unfathomable knowing.
How about keeping stuff relating to later episodes in the comment section of said later episodes. I know that's really difficult for stupid people to understand that love to rush back and allude to stuff later on like they're something special and then just make those of us on our first time through not want to come to the comment section to see some of the funny comments people have left, or helpful ones pointing out stuff we might have missed in this episode, because we might stumble into comments from these stupid people.
@@Archangelous1337 Lol this was six years ago, get over yourself
taliesin hinting Molly's background so subtly "There's nothing wrong with living your life. You only get one of them, or... mostly."
How is that subtle though?
I'm excited to see what it means
The universe: "we'll see about that, Taliesin..."
When Nott is taking a bath, she's TAKING a bath!
Underrated comment! xD
Guards in this world definitely don't get paid enough to deal with the amount of shit they have to.
No wonder their always so jumpy
Guards are generaly underpaid. In history as well. I find guards in role playing games allways unrealisticly diligent.
i think they dont even get paid
same as in every rpg, be at table or videogame, good old guard annoyance
One day someone stole a sweetroll the next day a giant frog goes on a killing spree.
Caleb talking to the fisherman is easily one of my top ten favorite moments of this campaign. "Did you know the circus was in town? Doesn't matter..."
"Arschloch!" - Caleb, Level 2 Wizard , 2018
Love the level of depth Liam goes to in his character. He gets my german seal of approval!
Darth Mustache what does Arschloch mean? Don’t know German.
@@tenacityxl lucky you I am here in the middle of the night, it literally means asshole
Franz Prüller notes for the future.
haha i know right? His pronounciation is pretty good too, makes me wonder if Liam can actually speak german
@@wonderlandartwork3579 I know, right? German pronounciation can be really hard for people that didn't grow up with it. Liam is doing an impressive job here!

It's really good invisible porridge.
Method acting!
Oh gosh he did, ahaha!
"The twins are being the twins. Orna is being Orna."
And
"Yasha- yasha-ed"
Are this far my favorite Mollymauk quotes
"When in doubt, if something goes wrong, just... nudity. It usually works"
also a fitting candidate IMO
@@Konpekikaminari "I am your god, long may I reign. Eat of my fruits."
@@darthfenrir7773 not there yet
But it I'm looking forward to it
My friends and I now use "Yasha-ed" instead of "ran away"
@TheDragonflie that's the best summary of that bit
I love they just looked at Yasha and were like “I’m adopting this” and she barely got a say and Caleb is like that tired dad who just looks at the puppy his family adopted without his say and is just like “fine, I’m too tired to argue this” and let’s them have it.
the fact that Yasha presses flowers is SO cute
Have you seen the latest episode?
I really like these RP heavy episodes/sessions. They are, for me, what really makes Critical Role what it is.
I know right?
I really feel as though each character *is* a person. It's nearly impossible to get my players to not create a character that's literally just them. This show is mesmerizing on so many levels
@@stevenbrown5246 Well these people are actors. Not everyone has the skill set or the desire to act. Which is what they are doing. CR is a radio play, more than it is a DnD campaign
Caleb does or says anything
Fjord: thats very impressive
we get it travis, just marry liam already.
Also, near the end when ashley said she couldn't leave yet and sam was giving her a hard time, i half expected him to say "what are you doing, building a temple to seranrae?" :p
Hahonryuu is your pfp Dirk?
Wrong twin. He married the other one.
HUG ME THROUGH MY WIFE
I ship it
I think Talisen, as Molly, acting like a big brother to Toya is everything I needed in life.

Flando Maltrizian You. I like you.
You're the hero critters deserve and the one it needs right now
Never watched any of them, do they do other role-playing games?
No i dont think so
Gill Wurney other tabletop games, I didn't either but I heard some of the stuff they played
“I’ve got a problem with authority.”
Your Ashley Johnson is showing.
Yet another episode of Caleb revealing his friend is a goblin without anyone asking
*Caleb* : Goblins aren't very well like, we need to keep you hidden
*Also Caleb, every 10 minutes, completely unprompted* : MY FRIEND IS A GOBLIN!!!!
he is like that one very protective friend who accidentally makes everything about race
"This girl is kinda weird"
"How DARE you say something wrong about her just because she is a GOBLIN???"
"I didn't even know she is"
"Oh"
Persona 5 Ryuuji if he liked to read

I NEED a Spinoff series where Jester and Nott actually have a PI office

This would be amazing, Fluffer Nutter was one of my all-time favorite scenes of both campaigns 💕
Mighty Nein: Nicodranas Nights
Matt to Marisha: You approach the Baumbauch family brewery.
Me, a German learner: Ah, yes. The tree stomach family.
I assumed it was the Baumbach, which would be like a tree-lined brook.
