    That is mind blowing to see him get that much usable gain out of a Plexi/Super Lead and it still maintain clarity, articulation and string definition. The distortion produced is also highly musical... phenomenal job!

    That's an awesome tone! Distortion is spread through out the chords/note in an even spectrum of tonal decay 🤟😆🤟

  • @louderthangod

    The crunch has legit texture to it and those harmonics are just flying out of the speakers. Too many higher gain amps get too smoothed out becoming homogeneous white noise machines. This retains the sound of a string oscillating with various peaks and intensities. This sort of tone sounds so good in a mix. It’s clear but doesn’t smother everything else like so many amps that sound great jamming alone but either disappear in a mix or need to be so loud everything else suffers. So good.

    I owned a Jose modded super lead reissue back in the 90’s. Something wasn’t right with it, because at 7 or 8 on the volume, it should’ve been giving up the goods. It didn’t. I sold it and moved on. Looking back, it probably could’ve used a cap Job and a retube. Not sure what the hell I was thinking, so I dumped it for a mesa boogie, which was a huuuuge mistake on my part.🤦‍♂️

    • @groundzeroampworks780

      @gordon9177he had many mods :
      - Jose master volume with clipping diodes
      - Jose three in one gain stage which added a new tube and additional gain stage
      - stereo volume cascaded gain stages
      - ceramic bypass caps on the plate resistors
      - presence pot mod .
      He probably has the gain and the master volume one

      @groundzeroampworks780  2 роки тому +9

      Thanks Jason! It’s been a long search for this one.
      No diodes here and no pre-eq master. Dave Friedman was telling me that he’s been in around 40 Jose’s and the majority did not have either of those features. Surprising!

    • @jasonktong1
      @jasonktong1 2 роки тому +6

      it’s my favourite setup I think. Similar to the Richard Fortus / Mick Mars José. Is there a pot for that José gain stage?

    • @groundzeroampworks780
      @groundzeroampworks780  2 роки тому +9

      @@jasonktong1 Yessir the control for the extra gain stage is on the rear panel. I had always seen them on the lower right input so I found it odd. However, Dave said his original 3-in-1 mod he had gotten from Jose way back when also had the control in the rear. He indicated that it was customer preference if they wanted the front to still be stock in appearance.

    • @groundzeroampworks780
      @groundzeroampworks780  Рік тому +1

      Extra stage plate is adjustable. There is a “preamp select” knob on back that Jose commonly did.
      The stock first stage is still 100k. Pretty sure they’re .68 bypasses.

    I don't understand exactly what the Jose mod is. I know it involves an extra gain stage, but my searches yield conflicting information.

    • @groundzeroampworks780
      @groundzeroampworks780  2 роки тому +5

      Yes, that’s correct. The most basic element is an added gain stage in front with a pre-phase inverter master volume. Some Jose’s, but not many, will have a push pull master with a pre-eq master and zener diodes.

      @@groundzeroampworks780 How do they differe from a one-wire mod?

    • @Amp_Expert
      @Amp_Expert 2 роки тому

      @@rangerdoc1029 1-wire MOD, you adding an additional gain stage to a standard super lead, so in a sense, the same thing as this has no Pre-tonestack master, nor diode clipping. Likewise, you need a level control for the addl gain stage (this one is on back). Just cascading gain stages doesn't mean you'll have the ability to adjust the level.

    • @Amp_Expert
      @Amp_Expert 2 роки тому +4

      Jose had a few MODs. They were basically as follows:
      MOD1: Extra gain stage with level control adding the gain stage in front of a stock Marshall Super Lead
      MOD2: Added a Post-Tonestack Master Volume
      MOD3: Paralleled both sides of the added tube for more gain
      MOD4: Added a Push-Pull to internally jump VOL I and VOL II (cuts gain slightly)
      MOD5: Added a Push-Pull Master, so the Master was either Pre-Tonestack or Post Tonestack. Typically, if an amp had this MOD, it had Zener clipping also.
      Both Vai and Ossie's Jose's are MOD5. Mick Marrs is like a MOD1 or MOD2. This amp is likewise a basic MOD1 or MOD2, unless there is more content.
      Some other MODs Jose used included adding FX loops and sometimes TWO FX Loops for some customer.
      Hope this helps!
