I could not be happier with this amp!.. I’ve wondered how to make this amp useable for a while, I knew Jason was the man after watching and hearing the tones and his thoughts on the “Marshall” sound in many of his other vids. In going to him, I discovered both a professional operator, and a talented tech who really puts himself into your project. Looks like Big things are happening for Jason. I feel lucky to have gotten to him as one day it may be hard to. Maybe this sounds like a load of wank… it’s not! Can’t wait to get this fire breather into the band mix! Thanks Jason!
I kinda feel like people hold these old amp mods to a mythical sacred status. Kinda like some tones like EVH's "you need this plexi a variac blah blah". When high gain and amp technology in general has improved where we can get these tones and get them easier. Glad the owner was open to have it looked at. You definitely improved it
People do hold them to a snake oil level. As far as improvement in Amp technology goes; The modeling stuff is amazing. But as far as the Tube Amp stuff goes, a lot of the newer stuff is not built as well as their elder brothers.
That’s very true Clint. Although one thing me and Jason discussed, both as owners of many other Marshall based high end el34 amps, was the tendency for these incredible makers to go “too smooth” or “too refined”. There’s a certain snarl, edge and sizzle.. (many other buzz words😂) that should remain for that legendary Marshall character.. subjective obviously 🤟🏽
Yeah I miss the snarl, aggression, and barkin most modded marshall. The Atla thankfully retains that but I feel like most brands lose that. As far as quality of amps I feel like some companies are taking advantage of the new technologies and still have a reliable amp. For example, KSR amps are really reliable.
no idea what the tech talk means, but the new voice of that amp is epic. like a blanket removed from the speaker box. clean sounds very lively and delicious too. nice job.
Wow, you really improved that amp. Great work. Familiar with The Rabid Dogs and Brett Kingman, they all do great work too, and are nice people. And have to say, you play extremely well!
Whoever was in there previous was one of those run of the mill hacks out there that think they are an amp guru or even a technician! Good God...he shave off all of that beautiful higher registry Mojo and like you said, made it appear thicker by being bass heavy!! Yikes! Sometimes makes me wonder if giving back with soo many designs....all Friedmans, Wizard, Suhr, Gower, etc. really is beneficial, because it just creates more hacks!! Good job fixing it Jason. Definitely better than the way it came in the door!
Sounds great, Jason! I suddenly feel the urge to clip hairspray coupons! The only thing I would change, if it were my amp, is I'd add a little more mids to warm up the tone.
Definitely better after! Always wonder what the original modder used as a test platform, perhaps a Telecaster , a Tube Screamer, and a slant cab loaded with V30s ! 🙃
Used to have the 100 half stack of this re-issue back in the late 90’s/early 2K’s. Wish I still had it but without a decent job, the bills come calling 😢
sounds great, i mod amps by swapping to vintage tubes here are my tips for the 1987x: 1.for high gain and bright amps i recommend a mullard i63 in v1 it will boost the low mids and soften the highs which can be a bit harsh in this circuit. 2. a high gain balanced i63 at v3 (pi) is like having the master on 11 better cleans and better drive since it pushes the power section a bit more at all volumes. 3.enjoy!
Jason I see you have a Suhr SL-68 in the shop. Other than the built in variac it's a bit of a one-trick plexi. What could I do to make mine more versatile besides selling it to fund an Alta 100?
Hmm, not a lot really other than heavily mod it which would probably decrease the value of it. That SL68 is my own amp, it's a great Plexi but yeah they are one trick ponies!
@@HeadfirstAmps not really!! but listening to this on my phone it sounded a little fatter and fuller. I guess my ears are pretty shot!! I am sure you can hear it better than I can!! thanks for another great video and sharing your knowledge.

Thanks mate, was awesome to meet you and hang for a bit. Looking forward to catching up again soon!
Congrats on owing that phenomenal amp!
Both before and after sound great to my ears. “After” is definitely more up my alley. The tone you get when backing off the volume knob is glorious!

@Joel - speaking of Marshall based high end EL34 amps, do you recall having CALI #1 in your shop?

Good job! What a difference and sounds amazing
The after sounds great!!
Great work Jason, sounds amazing. I'm sure Joel is gonna be over the moon.
Improved mod sounds killer with great ‘brown sound’ vibe!! 😀👍👍
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise on this one Jason.
Thanks for watching!

Absolutely brilliant!!
That Marshall 1987 X Sounds killer now! Jason one more Marshall that gets too sound than ever. Rock on Brother.

Definitely sounds better afterwards!
Excellent! Love it!
Killer Tones!🤘
OMG!!!! sounds sick!!

Yes!
The amp sounds unreal Jason! I’d love to get my 1987x reissue over from NZ for you to mod one day..
Do it! Chur.

Wow Jason! You are a sonic wizard! And great ear too!
The revoiced version sounded dope to me.

Would love to see a Lee Jackson mod!

amazing tones! what speaker was used?
Tones in this clip were via a Suhr reactive load with a York Audio blackback IR
Love the video. But where do I get that tshirt????
Should get a bunch and throw them up online?
Awesome.
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Sounds like a blanket has been removed from the amp
Night and day hey!? Tight low frequencies... definition... upper harmonics. Wow!
Jase Mod > Jose Mod
Only takes one letter
Cocked wah afterwards
Before sounded a little muffled.
don’t hate me but I liked the sound before it was modded a little better😮
Good if you like bloated JTM45 type preamps tones! haha

For the 1st time ever, I think I like the original Jose mod better imho. Just me...
Too much bass and gain early in the preamp, if you heard it for real I think. It sounded like blocking distortion, or a fuzz pedal. No definition.
Sounded fatter before-closer to a plexi. After it was 80s and thinner. IMO
A big difference that doesn't seem to come from the amp itself but from the recording setup..., strange!
Recording setup was identical, I don’t know what you mean…
a lot more brightness after the revoicng, like the position on the microphone has changed..@@HeadfirstAmps
It’s the amp mate.
