I was there!!! It was amazing!!! The lad who smacked Noel, by the way, was from Sunderland, not Newcastle. I spoke to him on the way home after the gig and asked why he did it, and he said he wanted to ruin things for Newcastle; he was actually a big fan of the band. I have photos of the gig and I’m mentioned in the credits of ‘Supersonic’ for sending them in for use in the film (they didn’t use them in the final edit). I still have my ticket from that gig - it was £3. Ocean Colour Scene were supporting. Two of the best bands in the world for the price of a Gregg’s sandwich!!!
Noel is really sensible towards the end of this video when saying i dont want to loose an eye and i only want to play guitar. He really is mature when he doesnt let his ego get the better of him.
England vs Azerbaijan at st. james' Park 2005 if I recall. Every Geordie I spoke to that evening was an absolute gentleman and I can honestly say that it was a great night and I would recommend Newcastle to anyone and everyone!!
Missed the brawl gig - but was there for the first one when they supported Verve (nb. no ‘The’ at that stage). Yes- the version of She’ll be coming around the Mountain on spoons was great😂. First time I heard Oasis was outside when they were doing soundcheck and it blew my mind. Great night- what I remember😂.
Cool video James already watched that video and watched one Radio 1 Evening Session with the recording of that gig recorded by Jo Whiley from 1994. Have a great day James 👍.
I remember with my own eyes a bottle got threw at Noel by the guy and Noel lent over the guy and said something whilst still playing the guitar then he got grabbed and pulled into the audience then punches started flying Liam stopped singing and threw a right kick towards the fight and the drum kit went flying as Tony pushed everything out the way and got stuck in, a massive serge of the crowd was being pushed in the direction of the fight with audience members trying to grab at the man but he was pulled away by security who were involved within seconds.
Iconic venue, it was where Nirvana played their very first European gig (not that i was there like) i was a teenager in the 90s and the “Original” Riverside was like a second home at one point, seen tons of great gigs there. It eventually turned into a nightclub called Foundation, now it’s offices or something. The venue that trades today in Newcastle called the Riverside is a completely different place, nothing to do with the original.
The original was a great place. Saw some absolute legends there. I always thought ‘Riverside’ was a stupid name tho, as it was nowhere near the river and in those days pre mobile phones and GPS, that probably made it confusing for touring bands to find. The name ‘Riverside’ is much more suited to the new venue, coz it’s actually right on the side of the river! But it’ll never replace the original 😎
If Radio One were broadcasting this gig live then where is the audio for the first few songs? And Listen Up as the first song?! Never heard of that being played live at this point in time, in fact as far as I know there is no decent quality audio of Listen Up live in existence, for fans of Oasis bootlegs that would've been pretty cool so if Radio One were broadcasting the gig where is it?! Plus Jo Wiley names 5 previous songs and then says about the sixth song "and then the 5th number... "
Jimmy Hendrix first gig in UK was in Newcastle in a tiny club, his manager Chas chandler was from Newcastle, the Animals are from Newcastle, Paul rogers from Newcastle, sting from Newcastle, led zeppelin played here, guns n roses played here before they became huge without a hitch. If Axl rose can play somewhere with no problems then i don’t think it’s the audience. I love oasis I saw them when they came back to Newcastle for their be here now tour and played the arena. Read any oasis book and every gig involved sloppy brawls, drunk arguments and threats. Every oasis member recalls how arrogant Noel is. And he left blaming his own brother. Let’s admit it. someone lands a single punch and it’s “I only want to play music, I’m not losing an eye, this is rediculous we need security”. Like he’s an angel. He calls his own brother a c**** now mocks his voice problems when is was actually a thyroid disease which he has for life, and has disowned him. Quite an insecure guy.
The Riverside is a really friendly venue now, absolutely nothing like it was back then, this mackem (not the one who hit noel btw lol) Loves going to gigs through Newcastle (not into football btw) and the Geordies are generally a friendly bunch.
Nah mate. The Riverside closed in 1999. The Riverside you know is a completely different venue with no connection to the original. It only had a capacity of about 450 although quite often there were more in. It was probably the best venue in Newcastle for up and coming bands. The City Hall and Mayfair were too big. Had some great times there. I actually had a ticket for this Oasis gig but didn't go as I was skint.
In the book about The Riverside, written by the staff and bouncers and owners and members of the venue, one of the security staff says noel had banged the guitar off the pillar near the stage and shit himself. Was Johnny Marr's guitar and he panicked then later blamed the stage invader for damage.
so how many times was Noel attacked on stage? twice or three times. did they know him? why would someone do that? were they trying to stop him from delivering an important message to the world or something?
this may shock you, but an ego maniac who says he plays in the best band in the world might rub a few people up the wrong way. particularly if you dont like the bands music.
You are right there i live 12 miles out of Newcastle and yeah it was rough as in 1994. I lived just outside of Newcastle in 1994 you did not dare make eye contact on the metro train. Saying that lots of big names have played Newcastle including AC/DC (Bon Scott) Not sure if the Sex Pistols played Newcastle lol.
Tougher than Glasgow? I find that hard to believe. I’ve never had any problems visiting Newcastle in the 90’s. Visited glasgow (well it was port glasgow just outside glasgow) in the early 2000 to visit a friend, seen a woman with kids getting mugged. I stepped in to try and help and received 27 stitches across the side of my face for my trouble. Have a huge scar across my face ever since. I have never and will never visit any glasgow again in my life.
@@colindickson697 it’s around 25 miles from Glasgow so not exactly a different world, Infact it’s pretty much the exact same as Glasgow. Maybe a bit dodgier at street level than Glasgow but still very very similar.
@@colindickson697 ok fair enough. How does Glasgow differ from port glasgow to the extent its a totally different world? I’ve stayed in both for short periods of time and stayed in Greenock for decades and stayed on the clyde river my whole life- and I’m not that much older than you and to be frank they all seemed pretty damn similar to me. Most of the bigger towns around the clyde area are. Paisley, clydebank etc.
I was a bit surprised by that comment too. I'm from Glasgow and first visited Newcastle in the early 2000s - I didn't get the feeling it was any rougher. Don't get me wrong, I got the feeling you'd soon find trouble if you went looking for it but if anything there was a party atmosphere about the place - at night anyway! Glasgow today is less rough than it used to be and Newcastle is a great city, the people are brand new. Every time I've been back since it just gets better.
I don't know, but I've always wondered that as well. Didn't he get attacked in Toronto as well? Which is a world away. If someone felt like they were going to attack one of them, surely it'd be Liam. He's the mouthy one egging people on.
Back when things were still just about having a bit of danger and edge. Nowadays there would be so many mobile phones, no mystique to anything. Not as rock and roll anymore. At the same time I don't condone anyone getting on stage and meddling with the band.
Newcastle was Was class man…couldn’t beat a band night in Zoots Mayfair or the city hall …this riverside gig if you believed everyone there’d be 20,000 there…I was there with a lad called Mick Dunn and oasis were shit 😂 I know the lads name who is the party concerned
Not the band’s fault but Liam made a bit of a dick of em self making things worse iv got a black les Paul and it weighs more than a 60s telecaster bass

Woowww. Any chance you could share those photos in some way?
Full of shite you lad. The guy lived in Wallsend.
Come on lad, share em!
Aye I’ve heard off various people he was a Sunderland lad haha - was it not Verve supporting?
@@m189283 no, definitely OCS.
James’ videos are that good, they’re worth watching multiple times. 😄
God I miss the 90s.
For sure

1.4k views in 4 hours. Amazing! Your channel is great. Love it. Thanks!
As a geordie who lives in Newcastle this is gonna be my fave vid
Another great video my man. Favourite UA-cam channel by a mile. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Always enjoying these videos james
Was there. But missed the fight as I had went to the bar😂

All of my favourite gigs happened at the old Riverside. Great place. Still a big miss.

Noel use to think he was hard back then I've seen loads of videos him of snarling the crowds. The guy definitely didn't just random attack him.
the 90's the last decade with good music, always enjoy your great content, kepp it coming
Didnt see that gig .but did see the lightning seeds ,supported by cast i think ?

If Bonehead said "you do a gig up there and they are mad..they are just psychos man" 90's Newcastle must have been truly wild haha. Love the Geordies

30 years later Noel tours with a spoon-player who sports a bowl-cut.
