"Yellowstone (Coming Home)" by John Denver

  • This is a unique mix of the available elements of John Denver's last song, "Yellowstone (Coming Home)." The first verse was written and videotaped during a trip down the Colorado River, the second verse was completed later on the same trip and videotaped by a campfire; and the third and final verse was completed and recorded after the trip, as a demo at John's home. This video combines all of these elements to create a more complete version of the song. To smooth out some of the transitions, I altered the pitch of one segment, added a touch of equalization in some spots, and sprinkled in a little reverb and double-tracking in one or two areas. The goal was to create one cohesive performance, but it's hard to do with such different sounding tapes.

This is the perfect send off song for John Denver. He was in his element singing about the things he loved most once again, nature and all her glory. That section between 0:43 and 1:43 is just so bittersweet, sitting out in nature with his kids playing what would be his very last song around a campfire, he must have been elated and this being one of the last memory his kids would have of him, just wow...So surreal. R.I.P John, thanks for the music.

This is one of my favorite John Denver songs. It is poignantly beautiful. It is also very upsetting for many of us that there is no finished studio version of one of John's best songs in recent years. I have three versions uploaded on my iPod, the best was one my son doctored up for me. This is a nice attempt to try to piece together a song that deserved to be immortalized. Others try to sing it, but there is only one John Denver. Oh John, how I miss your perfect, heart-warming voice and your amazing energy in this world. Hope to hear you once again on the other side.

This is a really nice compilation to get as close as we will ever get to what the song might have sounded like. I think that this was the best thing John had done over that final decade, and was going to mark a time of renewed productivity and a return to his musical homeland.
I do lament what might have been but love this song and am grateful for it...

What a beautiful song. I saw a part of that Colorado River special on PBS on TV when I was younger and while I've never forgotten it, I've struggled to find a copy of it. This song sounds like a spiritual sequel or "sister" to "Amazon", it's incredible. Btw, nice reference at 2:38 to "Eagles and Horses" :)

Almost like he knew... I can't imagine how he would feel today if he were alive. With corporate and personal lasciviousness at an all time high. My Dad was born the same year as John Denver and I constantly have to help my dad understand what's going on when he doesn't understand the wickedness the world has come to. There are many things I simply don't tell him because he's better off not knowing.

It's a shame this was never recorded in a high end studio but in his home studio. Still, a beautiful tribute to my favorite singer-songwriter....yet he was so much more than that. A complicated and quite conflicted man, he cared, I believe too much for issues he badly wanted to change. Yet, in the end, he realized he was, as are we all in our modern world, inextricably linked with the problems we so surely want to solve. Suffering from bipolar disorder (imho as a physician), he self medicated w alcohol which never leads to a good outcome. I believe he was a spiritual man and I hope he is finally at peace and he is finally home.

I think more than any others 2 stood apart as far as embodiments of the actual essence of life and the fullness of that. 1) Jacques Cousteau, 2) John Denver
This video clip was taken from a tv program that ran on PBS and debuted his upcoming Yellowstone Project. Life was rediscovered for John then and a brightest of all futures......and then he was murdered with a couple of thousand people watching his proto type (illegally sold to him) plane go down due to the fuel supply reset switch being placed in the most impossible of all places and he died trying to reach it.
The worst part came in the aftermath as somehow RCA his FORMER record label who had dumped him a couple years before then was SPURNED BY HIM as far as his Yellowstone project, somehow took sides with the planes designer and maker citing that he had committed suicide.
After lengthy investigations it was concluded that the fuel reset switch that by US federal law was supposed to be on the lower dash, was instead mounted on the side of the engine in the compartment behind his pilot seat. His family launched multiple suits and won them all.
For the planes maker they had to pay a huge settlement that ended their business entirely. For RCA Records America liable slander costed them as well and as of now that once biggest record label in America is now an also ran.
For the rest of us.....somehow we also died with him on that day. It was only a few months after this video and PBS program. It has taken me all these years to be able watch it again and only managed it because I want to recreate the WILDLIFE CONCERT and as we speak am writing songs for that.
John Denver inspired for certain, although John Denver I will never be....however, just as nature, we must continue on in the grace, dignity, and majesty that all of Gods creation is for us. Wish me well and good fortune as I attempt to relight a fire that once burned so ever bright in this man's and indeed both of those men's souls.
