I turned 21 in 1969 in Vietnam. This song has special meaning to me. I met my wife that year she wrote to me that whole year and we met when I returned. 50 years of marriage three children 7 grandchildren. Great memories.

My husband and I were married in 1968, he had served in Vietnam. After we were married his new job required that he traveled a lot. This song came to mean so much to both of us. Two and a half years ago my husband passed away after 52 years of marriage. Whenever I hear this song I remember all those times my young husband had to leave on a plane. He flies with the angels now. Rest in peace John Denver and Mama Cass Elliot. And rest in peace my beloved.

Denver has perfect pitch. Nobody could do justice to this slow little tear jerking melody. But, Peter Paul and Mary got the song from Denver and recorded first, and it's a good sounding song from that trio.
You can imagine all the Viet Nam vets at home remembering the memory of shipping out for the jungle with fear and dread pushed out of their minds knowing they were going far away from home, america, family, love.
It's just one of those songs...where two artists nailed it differently. Check out a song "Feeling All Right" originally written by Dave Mason of Traffic....compare that song to the more famous version by Joe Cocker.

In 1969 I had flown to Honolulu to meet my husband that was on R&R from Vietnam. It was October. He was "short" and coming home in December, which would have been his 21st birthday. As he was boarding the plane back to Vietnam this song came on. I watched his plane fly off as long as I could see it. On November 8, came the knock on the door saying my husband was on a helicopter that went down in the jungle, and all 6 people were MIA. Their bodies were recovered in 1973 and returned home to America. I will never forget this song and the meaning it had that day.

My mom and dad ate at a buffet restaurant and John Dutchendorf was sitting a few tables away. Nobody was bothering him at all. He and mom happened to go to the buffet at the same time. They struck up a conversation and John came to mom's table to sit and talk and eat a plate because he was alone, and he said, because he was lonely. I remember seeing him in concert in Ames, Iowa at the Hilton Coliseum. I think it was 1974, and I was nine or ten. I had, and still have the LP Annie's Song and two other LP's. My wife and I had tickets to see him in the early to mid 90's at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. I bought the tickets I think in February; I remember it was cold and I walked the skyways back to my office many blocks away. I was devastated when he passed that year. If I hadn't been as hard up for cash I would have kept the tickets instead of getting my money back. So sad when his plane went down in the ocean just off shore. We had a friend who was a part of Windstar and got to meet him. It is sad when the gifted pass, especially when they are still unselfishly giving their gifts to the world.

I was a high school senior in 1969. My girlfriend and I were headed to separate colleges. I remember saying “goodbye” to her and then heading to a small pond where I sat on the edge and cried. On the way from her house to the pond, this song came on the radio. I will never forget it. Thank you, John. Thank you, Mama Cass. While the version on the radio was sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary, this UA-cam video brought back a flood of memories, all wonderful, all part of the fabric of my life.

I learned to never talk about this because people never believed me, and it was much easier to keep it to myself than try to convince strangers. Years ago my mom worked in a music venue, and she met Cass Elliot, and they became friends enough that she stayed in our house sometimes and even sang in our living room. I was pretty young and didn't know she was famous even when I saw her on TV sometimes. My mom was inconsolable when Momma Cass died. I finally understood what famous even meant and that she was in fact famous when they were talking about her death on the radio and TV. Johnny & June Cash also came to our house once in a while, and I remember meeting them for breakfast with my mom. I now know what magic touched my life all those years ago and how lucky I was indeed. Hearing these voices all these years later always gives me goosebumps.

John Denver was at another level, his voice, his songs and his popularity were at the pinnacle of the industry in his time. I was born 31 years after this performance and grew up with this as a lullaby… John Denver is so deeply missed 💔 🎵 ❤️

I can't believe I am 53 years old and have made this far in life without having ever seen this video until now. In my defense, I was 1 and half when this aired. I am almost angry I just found this and did not have this in earlier in my life. :) of all the ugly things on the Internet, this reminds that there is just as much beauty. Without the Internet, I could have gone my entire life without it.

Every few years I come back to hear one of the most beautiful harmonies ever recorded. I'm listening to this over and over because I'm reading all the memories, many of them related to Vietnam. I weirdly picked this eve of the election, and hearing Mama Cass talking about the importance of voting. I truly hope no matter who wins, the most important thing is to keep our young people from going to other countries to be put in harms way. I hope we never have to pack bags say goodbye for the last time to anyone in a uniform again.

Always drives me crazy that many see Denver as a dork or a lightweight. He is (was) super-talented, multi-faceted, this song being an example with such an epic pre-chorus and chorus.

I mean. He was funny looking and dorky but that doesn’t make him less talented

He was also a very generous performer. Never minded sharing the stage. My very favorite of his is a song he recorded with Russian singer Alexander Gradsky called What Are We Making Weapons For.

I was in Germany in the Army and getting ready to return home. I was fortunate enough that my wife and first daughter lived with me there. They were going home first and this song always brings back good memories. Married 54 years, together 60, two daughters and five grandchildren. God life was good!

I'm 46 + know this music thanks to my mother since it was a little before my time. I love and enjoy reading all the people talking about meeting their husbands + wives in the midst of Vietnam when this song came out. And how much meaning it has for them. Almost all talked about 53 years of marriage. God Bless Mama Cass and John Denver 🙏 God Bless all our Vietnam vets. And God Bless all these wonderful couples sharing their stories. What a song can do to a person is amazing!
