    Hi Heather, this was a super interesting and helpful review - thanks for sharing. I want to get a V1 or A1 to use with my Profoto b2's, as getting them to work with my Canon Speedlites is a pain. I know you said in your review that the only reason you'd go for the A1 is to keep in the Profoto ecosystem... have you tried using your A1 with any other Profoto lights?

    Thank you very much for this video, I like the way you explain concepts and your spontaneity :) My question is: do I need transceiver and receiver triggers to shoot a Godox V1 with my nikon D800?

    • @liverpool6139

      You need a Godox remote trigger for your Nikon. I recommend the Godox X Pro. Make sure you buy the X Pro N. N stands for Nikon. This trigger allows you not only to control the V1 but all other Godox X series lights, from Ad100 all the way to that Monster Ad1200 pro.
      Hope this helps.

    I've had the V860II and the hot-shoe connector broke. I've seen many other users with this problem too. I also have the V1s and several times while shooting, the flash starts to slide from the camera no matter how hard I lock this in place. Has anyone faced these issues? Does A1, A1X have these issues?

    I have both - V1and A1. I bought the A1 long before the V1 came out. The A1 works with my other profoto lights (D2 1000, D2 500, and B1). The profoto is much easier to setup to work with my other profoto lights. V1 is a little confusing to use with other Godox lights - I also have 2 AD200 lights I use to light up the background. I use the round head adapters with color gels on the background!

    Hi Heather, thank you for your video. Have you compared the Profoto A1X with the Godox unit? I understand the A1X has a longer lasting battery. Lastly, do you know if the Profoto strobe modifiers fit on the Godox 600 pro TTL HSS unit or do you have to buy Bowens speed rings? We started in the Profoto eco-system, but sold our A1 and three B1s. However, we have the Profoto barn doors, umbrellas, and soft boxes.

    Thanks for the nice review, I like your simplified explanations & I subscribed. However, in my experience there is no light-softening modifier that materially alters the harshness of a speedlight flash. To me these modifiers are useless & an embarrassment when they fall off. I use the V1s either to bounce off a wall or skew the flash head away from my target, & finally as a master to fire my AD 200s thru softbox.

    When I decided to upgrade my lighting kit I looked at both Profoto and Godox. As you stated, looking at the specs and the price the clear winner in my opinion was Godox because of the price difference. I am happy I build my kit out with a V1, AD 200, AD 400 and AD 600.

    A great no-nonsense comparison. I shoot auto racing events, switching from no flash, to OCF, to on camera flash for victory lane shots. The events start out during the daylight and go into the night. The light is constantly changing and you have to ‘follow the light’, so speed and ease of changing output is important. I fall in the Godox budget range for sure, and was in the market for a new speed light for on camera use and as a controller for my 3 AD200’s. I have a TT685 but I never really liked using it as a Master as I find the user interface confusing. For me the ease of use using the XPro trigger over the older Xt was huge. So the ease of use as a Master the V1 offers over the V860II, plus being able to use the round Rogue gels under the Godox magnetic ring, sold me on the V1. It is so quick and easy to change the modes and power output of my 3 AD200’s (which are in 3 different groups) with the V1.

    Ok, I am going to go out on a limb here and probably stir up some dust and ruffle some feathers but hey, this is why we are here.... to discuss things with one another as a community. So here goes....I belong to several groups and forums online where I see photographers going on about being upset because clients don't want to pay the rates they charge or when other photographers don't charge what they think they should be charging and claim 'they" are hurting the industry. But when it comes to hardware we want to compare the real value and we want the most for our money. Now I know there are some out there who want the most expensive hardware and they feel confident to say it is worth it. But from this video, you see that, that isn't necessarily always the the case....sometimes the commodity prices are skewed...and as Heather says why would you pay four times more for the same thing? In heather's words Profoto wasn't happy when Godox came out with their version of almost the same thing. But when our clients look at us the same way we don't like it. I think one could argue that to a degree (not always but sometimes) that photographers have sort of become a commodity and I feel many begin to think they are the "profoto" of photography world when they are a "godox" (meaning still very good but not fours times as good). They're exceptions to this but to a point we take pictures and provide prints or art in some form....we all do the same thing in a general sense. Now you can point to some who do not produce good work and aren't worth what others are. But are we that much different from the hardware manufacturers, much of what we do is the same.... I recognize there are those who provide the extra personality or service that is a little better than others but most photographers can take a in focus, well lit image that is composed well. So why does it bother us so much when clients look at us critically? I genuinely posted this to get people's honest opinion on the matter, not to anger anyone.... but to have a real discussion on the matter.... Heather sorry if I dropped a conversation bomb on your video, I am just very curious about this. I hear so many times from clients, "Can you believe tog A wants $X for pictures and they aren't even that good?" and yet I look at a flashes, both with wires, bulbs diodes, circuit boards and do the same thing and say "can you believe company X wants that for a flash, lens, etc." Are we (clients and "us") that different after all?

      There is one big oversight in this comparison and that’s build quality and customer service, where Profoto definitely wins in both cases! I’m not sure about weather sealing but I’d probably also give that one to Profoto. As an engineer I’m very surprised build quality did not come into play.

  • @poursuivant1
    @poursuivant1 2 роки тому

    I saw your previous video on the A1, and you said that the A1 only used 1/3 of battery capacity after an entire wedding. The battery drain on standby is a known issue. Also, who doesn’t top off the batteries before a shoot? So the battery life isn’t an issue for the prepared photographer. Especially someone who likes to have extra batteries(and flash) for an event. Backup is vital.
    I’ve replaced my Canon speedlights with the new A10s. I like the Profoto for ease of use, connectivity and power output. Reviews have also pointed out the consistency of power delivery(lack of misfires) and heat management compared to the Godox when shooting full power past 30 shots. The A10 seems to do better in that regard. My Canon speedlights powered by Quantum turbo had issues with all of the above!
    Is the A10 for the rookie photographer on a budget? Probably not. However, I’ve come to value what the Profoto does well, and I don’t mind paying more to have that piece of mind.
    (I still bring a second A10, multiple batteries and an Elimchrom Quadra 400 system as backup.)

  • @markserrano8962
    @markserrano8962 3 роки тому +2

    Good points. If everything is nearly the same, the price becomes the deal breaker.
    I don't understand why some photographers feel insulted when at the end of the day Godox is cheaper than Profoto with comparable result.
    The issue whether it's copied or not is an entiely different issue. I can say the same thing with Amazon and Whole Foods trying to provide cheaper alternatives of well knowm brands.
    The comparison to Mazda/Toyota/Honda to Mercedez/BMW/Rolls Royce is entitely off. The Godox and Profoto here are being compared in an actual wedding shoot. Clients wont know if you shoot with Godox or Profoto, but people will know if you drive Rolls Royce over Kia. So uaing cars as comparison is off.
    However there's one major advantage of using well known brqnds. The potential for marketing and being marketed by these well known brands is possible. For example, I haven't seen a well known photographer being marketed for using Alien Bees but with Profoto there's a lot. Another example is some local photohraphers using Broncolor someone using Einstein. I've seen less skilled Broncolor users getting promoted way more than someone using Einstein.

    If something works, Spend less, Create more! That's what i believe. As a Tech and a Pro photographer i will look at everything and if you don't need it and can make do with less or cheaper, I will always say go cheaper unless you have a specific requirement!

  • @fotogmike5887
    @fotogmike5887 3 роки тому +3

    Actually, they might not be the same for photographers who use High Speed Sync. Page 53 of the V1 manual says that the unit shuts down after 30 consecutive shots without HSS, and after 15 shots using HSS, something important to action photographers. I found this out the hard way when using the Godox V860ii, which also shuts down at the same shot count. My clients had to wait while I replaced the unit that shut itself down.
    Incidentally, the V860ii and V1 are programmed to do that--it's not that there is an internal gauge that shuts down to prevent damage to the unit. I suspect that the A1 will go further, but since I don't have one I can't test it. I suggest that you could do a video wherein you perform that test since you have both flashes.
    I switched to the Nikon SB-5000, another "overpriced" flash that has the same output as the subject flash units. As per Nikon's specs, my tests showed that it can indeed do 100 consecutive flashes without shutting down to prevent overheating. The Nikon unit has a fan to prevent overheating, and an internal gauge to protect the unit (instead of just programming). That's part of what you pay for in getting an arguably much better flash. I've also found the Nikon's trigger to be more reliable in use. Just saying!

    I generally get the argument, but .... first - A1 does not cost 1000$ anymore (at the time of the review) and nowadays you receive a kit with a spare battery or two. Second - it is nice to have the ability to stick your A1 dome on the V1, but how do you effectively combine their radio systems when in use? Third and probably the most important - "the only way to compare is ..." - I have expected - "the field test" would be mentioned, but have heard the price argument instead. Not all equal specs necessarily mean identical performance whatsoever :-)
    So - the situation is becoming even worse for Profoto with the recent release of AD300 Pro - it is a Profoto B10 in even a bit lighter/smaller package (including the variable color temp modelling lamp), and it will cost 1/4 the price. We are Elinchrom users in a studio, I know Godox since the LP-800x battery times, yet for weddings, we went Profoto A1 + B10, mostly because Godox AD400 and up are both uglier, heavier, bigger. I am eager to see, what happens with the AD300 Pro release though, as it will allow our competitiong doing similar kind of shoots in 1/4 the price. If those lights are reliable, then we are really hitting the commodity argument you have mentioned in your video ....

      Maybe but it overheats, it’s not safe for me to use it at first dance for example... Godox/Flashpoint after 20 shots in short period of time even at 1/16 , 1/8 power it overheats and recycling time becomes nightmare, very slow...
      Profoto A1 i tried 70 shots and the flash Stil was firing with no slowing speed. Profoto A1 doesn’t overheat!
      To have a safe reliable product I choose Profoto a1... if you are not a wedding photographer maybe Godox may work for you.
      Otherwise Profoto A1 is number 1!

    Should I buy a Mazda or Mercedes?

    • @Heiko_Kanzler

      Well, are we talking about commercial vehicles? So why should I buy a Mazda transporter over a more expensive Mercedes? There are some reasons, like dealer / support network in your area and such, but if you have to make commercial decisions and decide between two vehicles who do exact the job you need, you go for the less pricy option. Why would you want to spent more money? (and that's the whole point here)

    I choose the Profoto A1 for the following reasons: 1. It controls my B10 strobe 2. Customer service - My first A1 went dead on a job and I had a new one at no cost a few days later. 3. Continuous firmware updates to better the light (battery, interface, new camera compatibility). 4. Superior UI in my opinion. I tried Godox and the interface was circa 1999 and confusing. The original A1 is now discounted with the A1X in the $1000 spot now by the way. I agree that new togs probably shouldn’t spend on Profoto for their first flashes, but then again that Godox interface (mostly the trigger) was very confusing and might really throw a newcomer.

    Maybe depend on where it is made Godox made in China that may turn some people off, secondly depend on warranty period ...I order my Godox V1 and been told my the shop it will arrive in another weeks time (I've waited for 2 weeks already). Hopefully I will not be disappointed

    Ok, for consumers its a no go, but for professionals who use the flash everyday, that little bit more money doesn't make the difference. And Lets be honest, these Godox guys literally did a copy of the whole profoto concept. Typical copycat behavior of Chinese companies. Don't want to support those.

      How’s 4 times the price „a little bit more“? Both of these flashes perform just as well aside from super minor differences.

      Oh because profoto is made in America of course... Those Chinese companies knows how to do good stuff because of decades of knowledge, thanks to Americans companies 😂

      Of course profoto invented the whole "speedlite" idea or concept they did not copy the other brands that have been making speedlite b4 them.

    I agree with everything you said... Except... The world is finally waking up to the problems we created when we outsourced the majority of the world's manufacturing to China. In North America our manufacturing autonomy is nonexistent, and we are now beginning to pay an incalculable price for forfeiting our industrial independence.
    No, Profoto A1s are not made in Sweden, or the USA. They are however, designed in Sweden and made in Thailand. Which to me, is actually worth something. Maybe not enough to justify a $750.00 price difference, but if we don't start stripping away manufacturing from China, we are soon going to be in an irreversible place, where commodities like flashes will be the least of our worries. Cheers!
