- Tim has used many portable "flash units" in his fifty-plus years, but it's time to make a NEW LOCATION PORTRAIT KIT, and the GODOX products seem to be a great starting point for a myriad of reasons.
Of course, all serious photographers have speedlights, but never before have they been as versatile, powerful and affordable. They could potentially be all that you need for most of your photography!
Tim describes his new journey into the world of "little lights" and unboxes some amazingly affordable accessories for his new location portrait kit!

I love your elegant and professional approach to a new product that is a fraction of your Larsen gear, your humbleness is above and beyond.
Thanks again!
thank you for showing me this, the little softbos is great!
WOW, that 24x24 popup softbox is perfect for my wedding portraits on location. I've been looking for something very portable and compact.
Sorry I never saw your comment.
I'm 74, & I seldom have an assistant, So Godox V1 and "Pocket strobe" work well for me. Also, the softboxes, etc., are high quality and inexpensive.
Hi Tim! We met a few years ago at LightPro on Hilton Head Island. You take amazing Portraits! I am still appreciating those that you captured of my daughter and her friend, who were both models there! I just purchased a Good V1 for use with my Sony a7III. You videos are very inspiring!
Nice video. I would suggest that you shop for your Godox products at B&H and apply for the B&H payboo credit card. This way you avoid paying tax and shipping is free when spending $49 or more. And they ship fast!.
B&H is my primary source. Amazon is #2
Nice video Tim.... Glad the Godox are working out.
Thanks for watching, John.
Hi Tim, I tried the Godox 24 24 and I am getting Hot spots on the face. Did this happen to you with this, TY great Photographer you are
I love your videos my friend.👍
Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed this video. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
You have the ad200 and the ad200 pro to check out. If your make a small kit you need that for the sun. They work in most cases. The evan have a piece to where you can combine 2 to work seamlessly.
Thanks, Rodney. I will get one at least, though I never really work outdoors, I understand you would need the power.
Tim, still educating us all. I've been so hesitate to use these! Actually, looking for new flash triggers for canon. Any suggestions? Hopefully, you'll show us this setup in action on location.
The speedlight set up actually is my location kit except for very large assignments. For my canon cameras I have both Godox triggers. They work well.
Thanks for watching.
I have replaced Speedotron 2400w/s strobes with 3 Godox V1's. 2 in a Godox octabank and one straight for food shooting.
Bill, I've just put my toe in the water on using this type of small lighting for ANY of my work. But, I am impressed and will continue testing it out. I'll get some of their bigger units and modifiers. This stuff may not last as did the older famous brands, but that's okay. There was a day when you bought your Hasselblad FOR LIFE. Then I went digital in 1999, and was getting a new camera every year.
This is the way it goes.
Thanks for watching!
I would reckon you might find some use with the Godox AD200 and maybe even the AD600
(I can't afford them anyway haha)
are you using a handheld light meter ?
No meters. Gave them up in the late seventies and switched to Polaroid tests, common in commercial work. Continued that way until digital 20+ yrs ago. Also, you get to know your lighting gear.
Hi, I know this is kind of an old video, but I have a question for you, are you sure that softbox you show is a 24x24 inch? it seems it might actually be the 32x32, would you be kind enough to corroborate this for me, I'm about to purchase one from Amazon and don't want to get it wrong, thanks and great video by the way.
The larger size would simply allow you to cover a bit more area. It’s not a detriment!
Yes I agree. This is very lightweight and softbox.
Love this. I've been curious about these lights. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Jeanie. This has been a fun series. Starting to get REAL results to share ..
Thanks Tim. Great video. What stands are those, please?
Which ones? Holding the Godox Vi's? Nothing special or expensive at all. I just make sure my stands are black, go 8' or better and have good friction or air resistance for adjusting height.
Hey Tim, I was thinking of making my own scrim reflector on wheels. I was thinking of buying one of those clothes racks on wheels and just wrapping a white sheet around it. Do you think that would work? Or would I be better off building it out of PVC pipe?
That could work in most cases! The height should be at least 70" or more for standing (adult) subjects. Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
Hello, you don't need a receiver for the Godox V1, it's included. You need the receiver if you use another flash from another brand.
correct. maybe I misspoke somewhere ..
He used canon speed light, FYI
thanks from india
Is there a real difference between a softbox and umbrella? Which purposes do they serve?
Thanks for watching! Simple answer, they both modify the light, basically converting a small source to a bigger softer light source. Much more useful for portrait and product photography. Ultimately, size and shape, convenience of set-up, storage and cost are important considerations. Lastly that "shape" of the light, round, square or rectangle (in the reflections / catch lights) matters to some photographers.
@@TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques ty for your response. I have bought the Godox v1 and can you please help me? If i put the flash on my camera it continues firing. It only works in ttl mode. When i put it in manual or multi mode it immediatly starts firing non stop. I don't do anything, i don't push the shutter, nothing. It's just on my camera and i put it in manual mode and it just trips. Idk what i'm doing wrong but it's really really weird.
where is the amazon products list. so that I can order the same products
Been working on the links and list. Will have my Amazon store filled up soon. Thanks for watching, Arco!
Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍
Tim,, you probably remember when you couldn’t buy a softbox for under 300 bucks.. I cut my teeth in the biz in the early 90’s..chimera, wafer,, ect. It’s nuts what’s available now.
Super
If it is your assistant doing all the carrying, setup and breakdown... why would you care if it's heavy or not? 😁😁 I think it would be your assistant who would highly appreciate the change of equipment. Anyway, welcome to the modern era.
Ha! Well, I still help carry it all in. And yes, they appreciate the seriously lighter load.
VERY NIEC IDEAYA
When are making a video testing the light from the soft box and umbrella?
Very soon, thank you for watching.
I also have one 400 w/s Godox light. They all seem pretty tough. But... we'll see The XPro trigger controls all the strobes from the camera. So far so great! I bought my Hasselblad way back in 1972. It still work wonderfully. I put an Aptus 80 mp for a job and it worked great! I went digital in 1994, and stopped shooting film in 1997. My Nikon D700 (10 years old) still works great but the D850 is just too much fun!
Thanks for watching and commenting, Bill. I've owned all the BIG backs for my "Blad" and went filmless in 1999. (Though I still love shooting and processing film). My first daily workhorse was the Kodak 560 which I loved. I even did a FOVEON camera for a short time .. $65K for a PC laptop with a lens. Wow, we've come a long way.
Hi Tim,
You may recall that I was in the MARS class you mentioned. I use what you taught us all the time.
I recently purchased three V1s and watched this video earlier this week and appreicate you sharing your methods. For those who need a tutorial on how to operate the V1, I just watched Rob Trek's tutorial and he does a really nice job with explaiining all of the V1 functions - ua-cam.com/video/1_GZcZomxtc/v-deo.html
Thanks again for continuing to share your knowledge and methods.
Gary
Thanks Gary! Enjoy the videos. I don't go out and teach anymore. After 30+yrs I've apparently "aged out". Most new generation photogs don't seem to care for fundamental training.
I have a problem with my V1 misfiring once after 5-6 shots at 20-30 second intervals. I'm using it off camera. The battery was fully charged. Any ideas?
Set the id number and scan for the best channel
Look at the godox ad 200 it has 3 times the output of a speedlite and is the same size.
I'll get one of those to complete my little remote kit. Thanks!
What is the name of the company stand, give me the link to buy , please
There are a few similar out there .. Mine are Calumet. You can find these air-cushioned ones at B&H www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1274797-REG/impact_ls_96habi_9_5_heavy_duty_air.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&lsft=BI%3A514&gclid=CjwKCAiA8ejuBRAaEiwAn-iJ3kXmcVqfaY_VGFCBlndUTZq7XpGXKAxVbAbbFqMKMOoq7jCYFip9_BoC8FMQAvD_BwE
Does the Godox hot shoe remote control the Canon flash?
I'm just using as a trigger (receiver). Mine are quite old EX560(?). I think if you use a Godox for Canon, it might work more fully with newer models. Boy, the remote works great with the V1!
Do you shoot with the ad200?
Not at this time. Just started with the V1's. The AD200 will likely be my next add. I loved the round head design of the V1's so I figured that was a good place to start.
Thanks for watching!
@@TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques You can get a round head accessory for the AD200 and use the same kit you bought for the V1 with the snoot, barndoors, etc on the AD200.
@@GBB70 Good news!
World best round head flash ever go get it before all gone
RIP Profoto
Good vid, but whoever is behind camera A needs a tripod and a fluid head. The sound is also weird...
learning curve. I think we've improved a bit since then.
Thanks for watching.
I saw the picture and was VERY surprised to see that Jeremy Corbyn had branched out into photography videos so I had to click on this just to check. It's NOT him!
I had to look up an image. Well, I get it now. Thanks for watching!
To say this flash has a modeling light is an overstatement. It’s basically useless.
This is very old type of softbox. I was using that umbrella style softbox earlier.
Yes, thank you. I've only used high-end expensive lights and modifiers. This is a delve into the simple and less expensive speedlight world. Just finding it quite worth having for small remote shoots. Thanks for watching!
Hello question
Gosh way behind the times - this stuff has been around and been using for years
I know, I ignored it. But, now I need it!
I think that is sort of the point. Tim has been a leader in the photo industry for more than 30 years. Watching him document his learning as he tries things that are new to him is pretty cool. Many old pros just stick with what they know and complain about the youngins and their new technology, but not this guy.
Not a bad video, but can't believe you're that inexperienced setting up lights and equipment.
Ha! I can DO IT, but I haven't had to in decades. I've be fortunate enough to have full time assistants. You'll see in the older videos, for just how long.
Yeah, no. Tim is one of the most award winning Master Craftsman portrait photographers out there. Trust me, he knows his stuff. More than most on You Tube. What a pleasure to see him posting his great tutorials on here.
