Decoding Fashion in Mad Men: Empowerment, Femininity and Professionalism

- Mad Men is a captivating series set in the vibrant world of 1960s advertising. But beneath the surface of glamor and sophistication lies a deeper narrative- a portrayal of women living in a male-dominated world. In this video, I’m analyzing how Peggy Olson and Rachel Menken navigate the fine line between professionalism and femininity through their fashion choices. From Chanel-like two-piece suits to delicate babydoll mini-dresses, each outfit symbolizes empowerment, resilience, and ingenuity.

The last outfit Peggy wore strutting down the hallway will always be my favorite. It’s how I think of her, and is completely iconic.
such a badass moment 😎
Peggy didn't have a model for career woman fashion, she had to invent it herself
and later she became a role model and mentor to Megan
My favourite Glow up is Peggy! Poor girl had the most hedious outfits, especially season one but the final episodes of the series she looked amazing. Especially when she walks into the new office with the octopus painting, Ray-Bans and a cigarette in her mouth.
I don’t even think they were hideous, just for her. Like the dress she had in the first episode would have been cute on someone else but Joan’s right, it makes Peggy look like a child
Loved this video! When I rewatched S4 lately I noticed that Dr Faye dresses in a lot of dark blue while Meghan dresses in sunny yellows and bright tones. Their outfits often oppose each other and it shows Don's struggle as he chooses between them :)
LOVE THIS OBSERVATION! you have a great eye for detail
My fave dress is of course Meghans blue mini. Besides her and her to die for 60s evening frocks in general Betty had the best wardrobe up until she married Francis where her clothing got very matronly. Except for that mod number when she went out with Francis and met Don on a date. I loved her mini dress and it was very unconventional for Betty to wear sth like that
Love this - thank you. Cannot wait for Joan's episode🎉❤😊
First! Also love your work, please do Marie Antoinette next! Your takes are so eye opening and refreshing
Great suggestion! will do xx
Ive absolutely loved this mad men series so far; thanks for always doing a stellar job!!
glad you like them! xx
Any video that starts with Rachel Menken has my attention!
Matthew Weiner said she was Don’s true love
@@KasiaSopniewska Yes! I remember him saying that at a Paley Center event that I attended several yrs back.
I love how the conference table is littered with crab cocktails during the first meeting with Rachel Menkin. It demonstrates just how clueless the men of Sterling Cooper were.
Can't wait for the Joan episode!
I was about to say, WHERE IS JOAN?!? That's right..she does deserve an entire video dedicated to HER! Of course, Megan does, too..beautiful women and impeccable style!
You're very talented, you have a great narrative style and the editing flows so well. Can't wait for the next video!
@cigamspargle Oh, you made my day with this comment! I'm always so self-conscious of my childish voice and foreign accent idkw
I LOVE this series, please make more videos exploring how different shows use costumeing as part of characterization and storytelling, so interestinggggg
3:35 favorite outfit of the whole series
@mayln163 yes! Betty descents the stairs in slow motion and looks like a vision while Rimsky-Korsakov plays in the background
Its soooo good! This channel is just sooo good! ❤ can you tell us more about yourself are you a self taught fashion junkie, a fashion historian or do you work in the industry?
i’m a 100% self-taught fashion junkie with a music degree. books, exhibitions and documentaries are my main source of fashion knowledge
@KasiaSopniewska that's so amazing your completely self taught! I can't wait to watch your channel grow
i just stumbled across your channel and am super excited. thank you so much especially for the soprano videos, one of my absolute favorite shows. the show is of course not for everyone but i would totally love a style analysis of scream queens❤
I love these analyses please keep going!
I think it would be interesting if you assessed characters that dress in more modern day to day clothing. A show that comes to mind for me is girls, I think the difference in style between the four main characters says a lot about the roles millennial woman are put into.
@Seetheairahhh, that's a fantastic idea! The thing is that I wanted to make a Girls rewatch series here on UA-cam. I watched two seasons and realized I don't have anything groundbreaking to say about this show and so I scraped this project XD
When Don and Megan announced their engagement at the office, everyone was in dark, drab colors except Megan. She was wearing a scarlet red dress and was the center if attention (and gossip.) It was perfect!
One of my favourite looks in Mad Men has to be Betty’s Italy Glam and the accompanying scene is just to die for 😍
I have a video where I breakdown Betty’s Roman Holiday look. it’s called Mad Men's Costume Design: A Closer Look at Character Development
i really like betty's outfits in the fog (05x03), they mirror her mentality and character traits perfectly, the yellow and purple dress she wears on her dream while giving birth is figure holding and curvy, yet a little childlish and the baby pink coat she wears when coming back home is feminine and delicate, it's always those ones that comes to mind when i think of her aside from the sad clown dress
It took me a second to realize what the sad clown dress was 😂 You hit it on the head though!
Peggy stays truth to her own style, she evolve but in a way she is confortable not for pleasing others
Sterling Coopers serving of shrimp cocktails to a Jewish client shows their ignorance of Jewish culture as observant Jews only eat seafood with fins and scales and shrimp, a crustacean, doesn't fit this criteria.
and therefore is not Kosher.
