    So, in the book version, Charlotte was a Samantha and Samantha was a Charlotte! 😅

      isn't that crazy?

    • @Gabunny
      @Gabunny 2 місяці тому +64

      I think that makes sense because Sam and Charlotte's narrative arcs in the show reflect each other's values (Sam finds a lot of value in a longer term relationship and being vulnerable, and Charlotte learns with both Trey and Harry how important a strong sexual connection is). It's more satisfying in a story to explore those two conflicting parts in chronological order, but in real life it's pretty common to live with the conflicting parts at the same time.

    It's actually pretty compelling how HBO took such a gritty book and turned into something so palpable.

      I remember reading the scanned copies of the actual columns on the internet MANY years ago. I was surprised at the critics the show got for portraying women liberally dating. Most people didn't know the characters had to get diluted for tv. Also I remember the Carrie in the columns was a lot more unlikeable than the TV version.

    It’s so refreshing to find a video essay about SATC that appreciates the show and doesn’t tell me why I shouldn’t like it and why it’s oh so problematic.

    So Charlotte was originally the English woman in the pilot who came to New York.. interesting.
    I like that the show never portrayed Sam as longing for a boyfriend but there were times when she felt vulnerable and hurt by men like when Dominic got back with his icelandic supermodel wife, the bar owner ghosted her at dinner and when she was sick and couldn't get someone to fix her curtain rail.
    I'm a die hard SATC fan and love these videos Kasia, keep them coming!

      actually, Charlotte and that English woman from the pilot episode were different characters. it’s easy to mix them up with all the introductions in the early episodes.

    Its funny how the "real" Charlotte is quoted saying how you need to be a complete bitch to sleep like a man, b/c in the show, fast forward to when Charlotte starts sleeping with Harry, that's exactly what Anthony says to HER when advising on how to keep their whole situationship physical.

    When I first started watching Sex and the City I was so excited to learn that is was based on a book. So I ran as quickly as I could to the book store... I was sooooo disappointed! The book was so confusing and boring, the only link to the HBO show was the names of the main characters, should I say they were completely different people. I gave up after couple of chapters... Never touched that book ever since

    As someone who is born and raised in New Haven Connecticut I’m offended New Haven Connecticut is an urban area Yale University is probably the only place where the wealthy people matriculate the rest of us on Foodstamps and low income housing and it’s been that way since the 80s and probably even before that so I don’t know what part of New Haven The character of Charlotte could’ve grown up in but it wasn’t a New Haven maybe it was Greenwich LO Al

    I'm so glad that the series really changed the characters than how they are in the book. I loved that Charlotte was the hopeless romantic who got her happy ending. And I'm glad that Samantha was independent and true to herself; choosing to be with herself than being engulfed by a man (she sounded pathetic in the book). Sam had her moments too, but she always, always, knew how to make herself happy.
