This week the boys are dropped headfirst into one of the craziest line-ups so far. The biggest standout is a wine so reductive it has the boys in a swirl trying to figure out what went wrong!🍇🤢
-
We are also greeted by a deliciously bargain old style red & a German Riesling that taste so good it almost saves the tasting on its own two shoulders! 🍾🍾

Probably the largest variant you've tasted in a loooong time - great to see the honesty in tasting. 👍😊
That's true! We're usually all on-point, but definitely an exception to the norm!
Great to see a Canberra wine getting some air time!
Canberra wine is still (for some reason) underrated...we need to see more!
I am from Germany and discovered your channel after watching the collab video with Konstantin Baum.
I just ordered a bottle of this Kabinett Riesling out of curiosity because it's interesting to have a common frame of reference what you guys see as a banger of a Riesling. If you buy a case it's 18€ a bottle here - so 30AUD.
Great energy guys, really entertaining and fantastic tasting notes. Only went to a natural wine bar once - the waitress asked me what I thought of her red blend - I replied it smelled like rotting blackberries, nail varnish, sauerkraut and manure. To which she replied: Well, do you like it then? !!!
Aw shucks! Thank you so much! Hahaha! Classic natty wine bar...still, we don't mind the idea of drinking sauerkraut - as weird as that might sound!
Ive bought a dönnhof estate wine and it was fantastic. Really drinkable, fresh, not the most complex wine to ponder over but top of the class when you're thirsty
100% - and sometimes complexity can get in the way of a good drink!
My guess is the reduction can be caused by copper bound sulfides. When you treat a wine with copper some of it stays in the wine and creates these poly sulfide copper complexes. As the wine environment turns to reduction these complexes release hydrogen sulfide out into the wine and over time those become mercaptans
Honestly its hard to disagree!
I had a couple of different Partida Creus wines (BB, MC and GT). They where all near undrinkable far too reductive. So reductive that it just spoils the wine. Payed quite some money for those too. Far too overhyped. It’s a shame though…You guys should try some Patrick Bouju wines…
Yeah, we've encountered it enough now that we're turning off it when offered the choice...shame, we hope they pick up what we're puttin' down.
Is there a chance that VN was faulty and another bottle would have been better?
There's always a chance of bottle variation, although with the type and style of faults we're seeing here, it's highly irregular for variation to be explanatory for it.
Correct,a whole bottle of wine is too much for one sitting..
It always takes me 2 days to finish a bottle..
Day 1 - 4 and 1/2 glasses.
Day 2 - just enough left to see how she holds up on day 2 and just enough to say I never drink a whole bottle in one day..
I suppose it depends on who you're having it with? But fair - half a bottle per person per day seems WAY more reasonable.
@@wineforthepeople indeed it does.
In a recent interview I did - the interviewee offered up a killer tip - keeping an empty half bottle around the house and immediately decanting a full-bottle when opened into it - so your second approach on successive days yields a wine in similar condition. @@notoverlyacerbic9574
There is always this thin red line between amusement and sadness within the natty movement. I was wondering if, knowing what the second wine was - BLE -, we would try to justify the poor quality of the bottle.
Ah yes! We're at fault ourselves of doing this! This is precisely why we wanted to always taste blind, to give a good honest review; unhindered by context. This can actually go against us sometimes - especially for non-faulty wines that might look just 'boring' even though they've arrived in our glasses against all odds - and only context could deliver the real 'value' behind the wine.
I’ve drank a couple of Partida Creus lately (at trade tastings) and sadly many of them have been undrinkable, especially the 2020s. Reductive beyond belief and mousey. Shame:(
Yeah, they aren't looking as great as what their reputation suggests. We were all quite disappointed. Hopefully they improve things - won't be the first time a winery/brand has turned things around...we're happy to hold our breath!
